Abstract:Satan's re-entry into Eden in Book 9 of Paradise Lost has been said to recall the return of Jesuits into England as part of the Catholic Mission.1 Returning to seduce Eve much as Jesuits were routinely thought to 'seduce' noble and gentry women back into the old faith, Satan is figured not only as the origin of the false prophet warned of in Matthew 7:15 but also as the ultimate precursor of Jesuit missionaries in England.2 More specifically, I have argued that Satan's predatorial entry into Eden involves a parody of the poetry of tears tradition associated with the influential Jesuit poet Robert Southwell.3 In particular, I argue that...
