Abstract:Co3O4 coating in lithium ion battery Shenjun Yu, Jing Zhu*, Zhikui Chen, Xianneng He Tianjin Lishen Battery Joint-Stock., LTD 6 Lanyuan Road, Huayuan Hi-Tech Industry Park, Tianjin 300384, P R China *Corresponding author; E-mail: louisefir@hotmail.com Introduction In recent years, lithium ion batteries (LIB) have been considered as promising alternative power sources for electric vehicles, portable electronic devices, and mobile applications [1,2]. Though many kinds of anode materials have been investigated, graphite is still the most common anode material in practical batteries for its high energy density and low cost. The homogeneity and stability of SEI on graphite anode strongly affect the safety of LIB. Modification of graphite is a promising way to enhance the property of graphite anode. Metals and metal oxides can be coated onto the surface of natural graphite to obtain composites with considerably improved electrochemical performance and thermal stability. It was reported that the coating affects the heat production caused by SEI decomposition and the onset temperature for the structural collapse reaction [1]. Herein, we describe the liquid phase thermal decomposition synthesis of Co3O4-coated graphite. Ethylene glycol (EG) was used as surfactant to induce the dispersion of metal oxide nano-particles on the surface of graphite. Experimental Natural graphite was dispersed in the solution containing Co(NO3)2·6H2O and glycol. The slurry was stirred vigorously, and then thermal decomposition at 450C in N2 atmosphere. Results and discussion Fig. 1 displays XRD patterns for pristine and Co3O4 coated graphite. The peaks at 26.36, 44.4 and 54.5 can be indexed to the typical hexaganol structure of graphite, indicating that the metal oxides coating had no influence on the structure of graphite. The XRD patterns of Co3O4 show wide peaks, which indicates that the grain size of Co3O4 is small. All the diffraction peaks of Co3O4 can be indexed to a single phase of face-centered cubic Co3O4. No peaks from CoO or the precursor are observed. Fig. 2 shows the CVs of virginal and coated graphite. It should be noted that the first irreversible reduction peak at about 0.7 V corresponding to the decomposition of electrolyte for the Co3O4 coated graphite is much smaller than that for the uncoated graphite, and the decomposition peak becomes smaller with the increase of Co3O4 coating. Because the graphite surfaces are covered with Co3O4, the decomposition reaction of electrolyte is suppressed. Fig. 3 gives the DSC of lithiated graphite anode. It is worth noting that, the exothermal peak corresponding to SEI decomposition (from 75C to approximately 150C) of coated natural graphite is smaller than that of uncoated graphite, which is in agreement with the CV test.
