Abstract:This paper reviews the membrane processes for the nuclear fusion fuel cycle—namely, the treatment of the plasma exhaust gases and the extraction of tritium from the breeding blankets. With respect to the traditional processes, the application of membrane reactors to the fusion fuel cycle reduces the tritium inventory and processing time, thus increasing the safety and availability of the system. As an example, self-supported Pd-alloy membrane tubes have been studied for the separation of hydrogen and its isotopes from both gas- and liquid-tritiated streams through water-gas shift and isotopic swamping reactions. Furthermore, this paper describes an innovative membrane system (Membrane Gas–Liquid Contactor) for the extraction of hydrogen isotopes from liquid LiPb blankets. Porous membranes are exposed to the liquid metal that penetrates the pores without passing through them, then realizing a gas–liquid interface through which the mass transfer of hydrogen isotopes takes place. Compared to the conventional hydrogen isotope extraction processes from LiPb that use the “permeator against vacuum” concept, the proposed process significantly reduces mass-transfer resistance by improving the efficiency of the tritium recovery system.

Abstract:A Tritium fuel cycle must have the capability to import tritium inventory from transport storage containers to enable initial inventory stockpiling and future refresh of the inventory. The Joint European Torus (JET) Active Gas Handling System (AGHS) previously imported tritium inventory from Amersham Uranium beds (U-beds) via a decanting system housed in the Analytical Make-Up box secondary containment. Due to significant operational challenges with this decanting system, a new system, the Tritium Decanting Facility (TDF) was designed and built, to enable import of tritium inventory from Amersham U-Beds for the JET Deuterium Tritium Experiment 2 (DTE2). The TDF-process design incorporated several changes, including a tertiary containment with independent purge system, process services supply including argon, and direct connection to the AGHS Intermediate Storage (IS) system. These changes resulted in significant improvements to the decanting process, including a significant reduction in contamination effects from off-gassing, reduced decanting time, and reduced risk of exposure to the operators. The key features of the TDF design and their subsequent impact on the operation of the AGHS are discussed in detail.

Abstract:One of the main design drivers of the EU-DEMO fuel cycle is to avoid unnecessary hydrogen isotope separation. In the tritium plant, this implies a novel functionality for isotope rebalancing (IR) and protium removal (PR). The task of IR is to adjust the deuterium-tritium ratio by several percent gradually over time in order to establish the required fuel mixture composition before reinjection into the torus. The PR is needed to process and separate protium, which inevitably enters the system via outgassing or replacement reactions. The candidate technology for the IR/PR function is temperature swing absorption, which is based on anticyclical operation of two absorption columns with reversed isotope effects. In order to characterize the separation process, a new test rig has been designed and is currently being assembled. This paper describes the principle idea of the process, develops a model to predict the performance, and presents simulation results for a DEMO-relevant gas composition. Palladium and vanadium have been selected for the modeling. It is shown that at the end of one column tritium could be separated with 92.5% purity. At the other column, protium with 46.4% and deuterium with 44.8% purity could be removed. A subsequent parameter study showed that the ideal gas supply would be 40% of the total length of the column and that 22 was the optimal number of cycles before extraction.

Abstract:The Tokamak Physics Experiment (TPX) is a superconducting tokamak with double-null diverters. TPX is designed for 1000-second discharges with the capability of being upgraded to steady state operation. High neutron yields resulting from the long duration discharges require that special consideration be given to materials and maintainability. A unique feature of the TPX is the use of a low activation, titanium alloy vacuum vessel. Double-wall vessel construction is used since it offers an efficient solution for shielding, bakeout and cooling. Contained within the vacuum vessel are the passive coil system, Plasma Facing Components (PFCs), magnetic diagnostics, and the internal control coils. All PFCs utilize carbon-carbon composites for exposed surfaces.

Abstract:High temperature helium gas will provide a thermal efficiency greater than 40%, even using a conventional steam turbine. In addition, helium gas will not react chemically with blanket materials, and surrounding air and water. Tritium will be easily extracted from the coolant too. Thus, it is one of the most attractive coolants for a fusion power reactor, from the economical, safety and environmental points of view. However, a large volumetric flow rate is required owing to the small heat capacity when the pressure is not extremely high. This requires a larger reactor size, larger circulating power and more penetrations, which may increase radiation streaming. A relatively low heat transfer coefficient makes it difficult to apply to a component subjected to a high heat load, such as a divertor plate. We suggest in this study, a helium-solid suspension flow as coolant, to increase the heat capacity and heat transfer coefficient. A gas pressure of 5 MPa, and inlet and outlet temperatures of 400°C and 700°C were chosen. There are few candidates for the structural material which can be used at temperatures higher than 900°C. We have proposed an intermetallic compound of titanium aluminide (TiAl) as candidate structural material of the blanket. Although the database for TiA1 is incomplete, it has high strength and ductility at the operation temperature. Using TiA1, radioactive waste management will be mitigated, since its activity will decrease rapidly. The elongation at room temperature, which is only a few per cent, will be improved through research and development not only in fusion but also in other industrial fields. In this study, spherical pebbles of lithium oxide and small blocks of beryllium were chosen as the breeder and neutron multiplier. Manganese blocks were installed to enhance energy multiplication. A tritium breeding ratio of 1.38 and energy multiplication ratio of 1.35 were obtained with the blanket. The net plant efficiency exceeds 40%, including the circulating power. The peak surface heat flux on the divertor plate was decreased with gas puffing including an impurity near the striking point. In spite of this, the expected peak heat flux was still several MW m−2 from the result of numerical calculation of the edge plasma. To remove so high a heat load, an impinging helium-solid suspension jet was applied to the high heat flux region of the divertor plate. Molybdenum alloy was used as the structural material in this region to keep the surface temperature and thermal stress lower than the design limits. TiAl was used as the structural material of other regions in the divertor chamber. To prevent excessive sputtering erosion, the electron temperature in the divertor plasma must be kept lower than 20 eV.

Abstract:This paper describes the preliminary design of the steady state tokamak reactor (SSTR) blanket cooled by a mixture of helium gas and fine solid particles. Light yet highly heat resistant material, titanium aluminide (TiAl), is used as structural material. Thickness of tritium breeding blanket using lithiated ceramics and beryllium neutron multiplier is minimized and high-temperature and non-breeding shield blanket is installed to enhance blanket energy multiplication. It is found that TiAl is advantageous in radioactive waste management because the contact dose rate of TiAl first wall attenuates rapidly. The gas-particulate mixture coolant lowers the helium pressure to 5 MPa and reduces the volumetric flow rate when compared to a pure helium-cooled blanket. The net thermal efficiency larger than 40 % can be achieved with the outlet coolant temperature of 700-degrees-C.

Abstract:The ARC pilot plant conceptual design study has been extended beyond its initial scope [B. N. Sorbom et al., FED 100 (2015) 378] to explore options for managing ∼525 MW of fusion power generated in a compact, high field (B0 = 9.2 T) tokamak that is approximately the size of JET (R0 = 3.3 m). Taking advantage of ARC’s novel design – demountable high temperature superconductor toroidal field (TF) magnets, poloidal magnetic field coils located inside the TF, and vacuum vessel (VV) immersed in molten salt FLiBe blanket – this follow-on study has identified innovative and potentially robust power exhaust management solutions. The superconducting poloidal field coil set has been reconfigured to produce double-null plasma equilibria with a long-leg X-point target divertor geometry. This design choice is motivated by recent modeling which indicates that such configurations enhance power handling and may attain a passively-stable detachment front that stays in the divertor leg over a wide power exhaust window. A modified VV accommodates the divertor legs while retaining the original core plasma volume and TF magnet size. The molten salt FLiBe blanket adequately shields all superconductors, functions as an efficient tritium breeder, and, with augmented forced flow loops, serves as an effective single-phase, low-pressure coolant for the divertor, VV, and breeding blanket. Advanced neutron transport calculations (MCNP) indicate a tritium breeding ratio of ∼1.08. The neutron damage rate (DPA/year) of the remote divertor targets is ∼3–30 times lower than that of the first wall. The entire VV (including divertor and first wall) can tolerate high damage rates since the demountable TF magnets allow the VV to be replaced every 1–2 years as a single unit, employing a vertical maintenance scheme. A tungsten swirl tube FLiBe coolant channel design, similar in geometry to that used by ITER, is considered for the divertor heat removal and shown capable of exhausting divertor heat flux levels of up to 12 MW/m2. Several novel, neutron tolerant diagnostics are explored for sensing power exhaust and for providing feedback control of divertor conditions over long time scales. These include measurement of Cherenkov radiation emitted in FLiBe to infer DT fusion reaction rate, measurement of divertor detachment front locations in the divertor legs with microwave interferometry, and monitoring “hotspots” on the divertor chamber walls via IR imaging through the FLiBe blanket.

Abstract:Four Test Blanket Systems (TBS) will be tested in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) equatorial ports #16 and #18 to verify tritium breeding and heat extraction technology. A significant quantity of tritium would be produced in TBM, and partly released into the port cell from the pipework of TBS or other high-temperature components due to its strong mobility and high permeation. The port cell should be accessible during equipment maintenance and human intervention. This work built a multi-dimensional geometric model to characterize HTO transport in the port cell, absorption/desorption, and diffusion in walls and discussed the effect of paint thickness, ventilation rate, source term, and epoxy properties on detritiation efficiency. The results suggest that a 0.1-0.16 mm paint with the lowest HTO solubility is optimal from the compromise between quick cleanup and tritiated waste decommission. A higher ventilation rate could accelerate detritiation while minimizing the radioactive source by a tritium-resisting layer is the most direct method. The optimized design options for reducing the time required to reach 1 DAC in 12 h still need further discussion because of the delayed HTO source from epoxy paint and dead zone of the flow field.

Abstract:The high temperature gas-cooled reactor pebbled-bed module (HTR-PM) which is a modular high temperature gas-cooled reactor demonstration power plant, is characterized by inherent safety features and high generating efficiency. It adopts numerous graphite for structural materials in the reactor core, helium as primary coolant, and tristructural isotropic (TRISO) coated particles embedded in the graphite matrix as fuel elements. However, at high temperature the impurities in the helium can react with the graphite to cause corrosion of structural materials. Therefore, it is very necessary to monitor and control the composition and content of gaseous impurities in the primary coolant. In HTR-PM, the gas sampling and analyzing system has been designed to sample the primary helium at different positions in the helium purification system which is used to reduce the quantity of chemical impurities and remove the radioactive dust and gaseous fission products in the primary loop, and monitor the gas composition and individual concentration online. In the current paper, the composition of the gaseous impurities which need to be monitored in the primary loop of HTR-PM is presented, the design of the gas sampling positions in the helium purification system is discussed, and the main gas analyzing instruments are introduced.

Abstract:PROCESS is a reactor systems code - it assesses the engineering and economic viability of a hypothetical fusion power station using simple models of all parts of a reactor system. PROCESS allows the user to choose which constraints to impose and which to ignore, so when evaluating the results it is vital to study the list of constraints used. New algorithms submitted by collaborators can be incorporated - for example safety, first wall erosion, and fatigue life will be crucial and are not yet taken into account. This paper describes algorithms relating to the engineering aspects of the plant. The toroidal field (TF) coils and the central solenoid are assumed by default to be wound from niobium-tin superconductor with the same properties as the ITER conductors. The winding temperature and induced voltage during a quench provide a limit on the current density in the TF coils. Upper limits are placed on the stresses in the structural materials of the TF coil, using a simple two-layer model of the inboard leg of the coil. The thermal efficiency of the plant can be estimated using the maximum coolant temperature, and the capacity factor is derived from estimates of the planned and unplanned downtime, and the duty cycle if the reactor is pulsed. An example of a pulsed power plant is given.

Abstract:In the fight against climate change through the progress of fusion technology, the Affordable, Robust and Compact (ARC) fusion reactor design is under development at Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)- Plasma Science and Fusion Center, in collaboration with the Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi (ENI) S.p.A. The reactor features demountable superconducting toroidal field coils and a replaceable vacuum vessel immersed in a Fluorine Lithium Beryllium (FLiBe) molten salt blanket. The low-pressure molten salt cools the divertors and the blanket, shields the magnets and acts as tritium breeder and tritium carrier. Tritium must be recovered efficiently from the salt to fuel the reactor, minimizing its inventory and its migration outside the FLiBe loop. The current work is aimed at presenting a preliminary design of a Double-Wall Heat eXchanger (DWHX) to be installed in an ARC-class reactor primary cooling system. The main feature is the presence of a flowing sweep gas gap which captures tritium and prevents its diffusion toward the secondary system. For the DWHX, thermal-hydraulic and tritium transport analyses were performed, considering a supercritical water Rankine power conversion system on the secondary side to carry out the calculations. To assess tritium extraction capabilities of the DWHX, the tritium extraction efficiency has been evaluated. Calculation results highlighted how the current configuration is not adequate to remove tritium, in fact the tritium extraction efficiency is very low. On the other side, it seems to act adequately as tritium permeation barrier.

TEACUP: A Tritium Management and Supplemental Core Follow Program

Abstract:TEACUP (Tritium Effluent Analysis and Core-follow, Up-to-date and Predictive) is a tritium management and supplemental core follow program that allows its users to account for reactor coolant system (RCS) tritium sources, generate discharge release estimates, account for downstream river flows and concentrations, and calculate corresponding uncertainties. The program incorporates water balance methodologies, tritium production estimates from secondary startup neutron sources, soluble boron content, reactor coolant system tritium measurements, and seasonal river flow estimates. TEACUP was designed specifically to facilitate the tracking of Tritium Producing Burnable Absorber Rod (TPBAR) permeation since measuring in-reactor permeation directly is not feasible and prediction methodologies have thus far been insufficient. A number of models, calculations, and correlations were developed in order to quantify all of the leading sources and losses of tritium in the RCS. By comparing all of the known contributors and discharges from the RCS tritium inventory to the measured RCS tritium concentration, the unaccounted for balance (within some band of uncertainty) can be attributed to TPBAR permeation. The tritium release estimates to the river generated from TEACUP are validated by comparing them to the measured tritium releases which match well and give confidence that TEACUP is tracking and accounting for tritium appropriately. An additional check on the methodologies within TEACUP is that the cycle-to-cycle trends for tritium permeation per TPBAR are consistent in behavior and the estimated release per TPBAR across each cycle is the same within their uncertainty.

Abstract:The deuterium-tritium (D-T) experimental program on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) is underway and routine tritium operations have been established. The technology upgrades made to the TFTR facility have been demonstrated to be sufficient for supporting both operations and maintenance for an extended D-T campaign. To date fusion power has been increased to ∼9 MW and several physics results of importance to the D-T reactor regime have been obtained: electron temperature, ion temperature, and plasma stored energy all increase substantially in the D-T regime relative to the D-D regime at the same neutral beam power and comparable limiter conditioning; possible alpha electron heating is indicated and energy confinement improvement with average ion mass is observed; and alpha particle losses appear to be classical with no evidence of TAE mode activity up to the PFUS ∼ 6 MW level. Instability in the TAE mode frequency range has been observed at PFUS > 7 MW and its effect on performance is under investigation. Preparations are underway to enhance the alpha particle density further by increasing fusion power and by extending the neutral beam pulse length to permit alpha particle effects of relevance to the ITER regime to be more fully explored.

Abstract:The Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) programme aims to deliver a first-of-a-kind fusion prototype powerplant (SPP). The SPP plasma places extreme heat, particle and structural loads onto the plasma-facing components (PFCs) of the divertor, limiters and inboard and outboard sections of the first wall. The PFCs must manage the heat and particle loads and wider powerplant requirements relating to safety, net power generation, tritium breeding and plant availability. To enable STEP PFC concepts to be identified that satisfy these wide-ranging requirements, an iterative design (‘Decide & Iterate’) methodology has been used to synchronize a prioritized set of decisions, within the fast-paced, iterative, whole plant concept design schedule. This paper details the ‘Decide and Iterate’ methodology and explains how it has enabled the identification of the SPP PFC concepts. These include innovative PFC solutions such as a helium-cooled discrete and panel limiter design to increase tritium breeding while providing sufficient coverage and enabling individual limiter replacement; the integration of the outboard first wall with the breeding zone to enhance fuel self-sufficiency and power generation; and the use of heavy water (D 2 O) within the inboard first wall and divertor PFCs to increase tritium breeding within the outboard breeding zone. Abstract:The STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) Programme aims to deliver a UK prototype fusion energy plant, targeting 2040, and a path to commercial viability of fusion. To deliver on this aim, we have performed initial scoping to identify the design point for a spherical tokamak prototype powerplant producing at least 100MWe of net electric output and that is self-sufficient in tritium production. We have developed a rapid workflow that starts with the systems code process to develop an initial design point that can then be iterated with the plasma codes jetto and fiesta to add fidelity. Promising solutions can then be taken forward for further analysis of the tritium breeding ratio, inboard build, exhaust and power balance. Solutions that are best matched to the requirements are then taken on by a wider team to assess. We have applied this technique using a number of different input technology options and assumptions and arrived at the most promising design point for the STEP Prototype Powerplant (SPP). The unique features of this device are no inboard breeding blanket, the use of remountable magnet joints, high β and bootstrap plasma operation, a Super-X divertor, the use of just microwave heating, and enclosing poloidal field coils inside the toroidal field cage.

Abstract:The main source of tritium is fission reactors PHWR (CANDU) or molten salt (MSR), nuclear fusion reactors (JET, ITER, DEMO) which, in operation, generate significant amounts of tritiated light water or tritiated heavy water, whose efficient processing, through an advanced technology, would contribute to the reduction of stocks and the recovery of tritium and deuterium. The research presented in this work aims to promote a modern management of tritium and its associated materials, by developing a technology for separating hydrogen isotopes through the CECE (Combined Electrolysis and Catalytic Exchange) separation process, for the concentration of tritium in liquid state (HTO, DTO). The conceptual diagram of the Advanced Modular System (AMS), the main component elements, together with the description of 3 modes of experimentation will be presented. The technological process that takes place within AMS is electrolysis of process water and, respectively, isotopic exchange on mixed catalytic packing.

Abstract:The Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) is a large tokamak which has performed experiments with 50:50 deuterium - tritium fuelled plasmas. Since 1993, TFTR has produced about 1090 D - T plasmas using about 100 grams of tritium and producing about 1.6 GJ of D - T fusion energy. These plasmas have significant populations of 3.5 MeV alphas (the charged D - T fusion product). TFTR research has focused on alpha particle confinement, alpha driven modes, and alpha heating studies. Maximum D - T fusion power production has aided these studies, requiring simultaneously operation at high input heating power and large energy confinement time (to produce the highest temperature and density), while maintaining low impurity content. The principal limitation to the TFTR fusion power production was the disruptive stability limit. Secondary limitations were the confinement time, and limiter power handling capability.

Abstract:Deuterium-tritium fusion is the easiest nuclear fusion reaction among known fusion reactions. Since tritium is extremely rare, it is artificially produced by irradiating lithium metal. The separation, isolation, and storage of the tritium isotope has been a major focus of the Savannah River Site (SRS) for many decades. Thermal diffusion, fractional absorption, and cryogenic distillation have all been used in the past, and each has significant operational and safety challenges. A process known as the Thermal Cycling Absorption Process (TCAP) was invented at SRS, and because of its overwhelming advantages in safety, efficiency, size, and reduced tritium inventory, it has replaced all other hydrogen isotope separation processes at SRS. The working principles and current development of hydrogen isotope separation using TCAP at SRS are explained as a potential advanced isotope separation process for the fusion fuel cycle.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the preliminary divertor design and plasma exhaust scenario for the reactor-class Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) project. Due to the smaller size of the machine, with a major radius less than half that of most DEMO concepts, the current design features a double-null divertor geometry, comprising tightly baffled extended outer legs and shorter inner legs approaching an X-divertor. Leveraging a significant database of SOLPS-ITER simulations, the exhaust operational space is mapped out, offering valuable insights into the plasma exhaust dynamics. An approach involving the validation of simple, yet robust models capable of accurately predicting key exhaust parameters is detailed, thereby streamlining the design process. The simple models are used to simulate the entire plasma scenario from the plasma current ramp-up, through the burning phase, to the plasma current ramp-down. Notably, the findings suggest that pronounced detachment, with peak heat loads below engineering limits and electron temperatures below 5 eV, is achievable with a divertor neutral pressure between 10 - 15 Pa during the burning phase, and pressures below 5 Pa during the ramp-up to maximise the auxiliary current-drive efficiency. Throughout the scenario, an Ar concentration of ~3% in the scrape-off layer (SOL) is required, in combination with a core radiation fraction of 70% driven by intrinsic emission and extrinsic injection of Xe seeded fuelling pellets. However, significant uncertainties remain regarding key parameters such as the SOL heat flux width, Ar screening, and plasma kinetic effects.

Abstract:Based on a thermodynamic analysis of potentially applicable methods for water detritiation, it is concluded that the most promising methods are water distillation and chemical isotope exchange (ChIE) between hydrogen and water. Data on the mass transfer characteristics of these separation methods for various types of contact devices in countercurrent separation columns are presented. Installations for detritiation of light water are compared using the ITER reactor project as an example, and advantages and disadvantages of the methods are analyzed. Taking into account information about existing or planned water detritiation installations in different countries of the world, the conditions for the preferential application of ChIE technology are considered.
