Abstract:Can quantum communication be more efficient than its classical counterpart? Holevo's theorem rules out the possibility of communicating more than n bits of classical information by the transmission of n quantum bits --- unless the two parties are entangled, in which case twice as many classical bits can be communicated but no more. In apparent contradiction, there are distributed computational tasks for which quantum communication cannot be simulated efficiently by classical means. In extreme cases, the effect of transmitting quantum bits cannot be achieved classically short of transmitting an exponentially larger number of bits. In a similar vein, can entanglement be used to save on classical communication? It is well known that entanglement on its own is useless for the transmission of information. Yet, there are distributed tasks that cannot be accomplished at all in a classical world when communication is not allowed, but that become possible if the non-communicating parties share prior entanglement. This leads to the question of how expensive it is, in terms of classical communication, to provide an exact simulation of the spooky power of entanglement.

Abstract:By using one-dimensional photon state-vector function obtained previously, a general analytic expression is deduced for the optical two-hole interference experiment, which not only greatly enlarges the range of the observable, but also completely represents the probability distribution for a photon in the whole space. On the basis of the basic rules of quantum optics, we quantitatively analyze and discuss the domain of definition of the experiment, and the quantum behavior of the interference item on the average of space.

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to extend the result of previous papers <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="quant-ph/9611023" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/quant-ph/9611023">quant-ph/9611023</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="quant-ph/9703013" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/quant-ph/9703013">quant-ph/9703013</a> to quantum channels with additive constraints onto the input signal, by showing that the capacity of such channel is equal to the supremum of the entropy bound with respect to all apriori distributions satisfying the constraint. We also make an extension to channels with continuous alphabet. As an application we prove the formula for the capacity of the quantum Gaussian channel with constrained energy of the signal, establishing the asymptotic equivalence of this channel to the semiclassical photon channel. We also study the lower bounds for the reliability function of the pure-state Gaussian channel.

Abstract:Fundamental limits on communication rates over quantum channels are given by mathematical expressions involving entropic formulas. Often, it is unclear if these expressions are computable. This thesis describes contributions to the study of optimizing and approximating entropic formulas over relevant subsets of quantum states. It also describes progress on a quantum erasure simulation problem in the high noise regime.

Concrete Quantum Channels and Algebraic Structure of Abstract Quantum Channels

Abstract:This article analyzes the algebraic structure of the set of all quantum channels and its subset consisting of quantum channels that have Holevo representation. The regularity of these semigroups under composition of mappings are analysed. It is also known that these sets are compact convex sets and, therefore, rich in geometry. An attempt is made to identify generalized invertible channels and also the idempotent channels. When channels are of the Holevo type, these two problems are fully studied in this article. The motivation behind this study is its applicability to the reversibility of channel transformations and recent developments in resource-destroying channels, which are idempotents. This is related to the coding-encoding problem in quantum information theory. Several examples are provided, with the main examples coming from pre-conditioner maps which assigns preconditioners to matrices, in numerical linear algebra.Thus the known pre-conditioner maps are viewd as a quantum-channel in finite dimentions.

Abstract:This is a preliminary version of a book in progress on the theory of quantum communication. We adopt an information-theoretic perspective throughout and give a comprehensive account of fundamental results in quantum communication theory from the past decade (and earlier), with an emphasis on the modern one-shot-to-asymptotic approach that underlies much of today's state-of-the-art research in this field. In Part I, we cover mathematical preliminaries and provide a detailed study of quantum mechanics from an information-theoretic perspective. We also provide an extensive and thorough review of quantum entropies, and we devote an entire chapter to the study of entanglement measures. Equipped with these essential tools, in Part II we study classical communication (with and without entanglement assistance), entanglement distillation, quantum communication, secret key distillation, and private communication. In Part III, we cover the latest developments in feedback-assisted communication tasks, such as quantum and classical feedback-assisted communication, LOCC-assisted quantum communication, and secret key agreement.

Abstract:Network information theory is the study of communication problems involving multiple senders, multiple receivers and intermediate relay stations. The purpose of this thesis is to extend the main ideas of classical network information theory to the study of classical-quantum channels. We prove coding theorems for quantum multiple access channels, quantum interference channels, quantum broadcast channels and quantum relay channels. A quantum model for a communication channel describes more accurately the channel's ability to transmit information. By using physically faithful models for the channel outputs and the detection procedure, we obtain better communication rates than would be possible using a classical strategy. In this thesis, we are interested in the transmission of classical information, so we restrict our attention to the study of classical-quantum channels. These are channels with classical inputs and quantum outputs, and so the coding theorems we present will use classical encoding and quantum decoding. We study the asymptotic regime where many copies of the channel are used in parallel, and the uses are assumed to be independent. In this context, we can exploit information-theoretic techniques to calculate the maximum rates for error-free communication for any channel, given the statistics of the noise on that channel. These theoretical bounds can be used as a benchmark to evaluate the rates achieved by practical communication protocols. Most of the results in this thesis consider classical-quantum channels with finite dimensional output systems, which are analogous to classical discrete memoryless channels. In the last chapter, we will show some applications of our results to a practical optical communication scenario, in which the information is encoded in continuous quantum degrees of freedom, which are analogous to classical channels with Gaussian noise.

Abstract:In this paper we provide an intuitive-level discussion of the challenges and opportunities offered by quantum-based methods for supporting secure communications, e.g., over a network. The goal is to distill down to the most fundamental issues and concepts in order to provide a clear foundation for assessing the potential value of quantum-based technologies relative to classical alternatives. It is hoped that this form of exposition can provide greater clarity of perspective than is typically offered by mathematically-focused treatments of the topic. It is also hoped that this clarity extends to more general applications of quantum information science such as quantum computing and quantum sensing.

Abstract:Quantum communication systems support unique applications in the form of distributed quantum computing, distributed quantum sensing, and several cryptographic protocols. The main enabler in these communication systems is an efficient infrastructure that is capable to transport unknown quantum states with high rate and fidelity. This feat requires a new approach to communication system design which efficiently exploits the available physical layer resources, while respecting the limitations and principles of quantum information. Despite the fundamental differences between the classic and quantum worlds, there exist universal communication concepts that may proven beneficial in quantum communication systems as well. In this survey, the distinctive aspects of physical layer quantum communications are highlighted in a attempt to draw commonalities and divergences between classic and quantum communications. More specifically, we begin by overviewing the quantum channels and use cases over diverse optical propagation media, shedding light on the concepts of crosstalk and interference. Subsequently, we survey quantum sources, detectors, channels and modulation techniques. More importantly, we discuss and analyze spatial multiplexing techniques, such as coherent control, multiplexing, diversity and MIMO. Finally, we identify synergies between the two communication technologies and grand open challenges that can be pivotal in the development of next-generation quantum communication systems.

Abstract:With the recent advancements and developments in quantum technologies, the emerging field of quantum communication and networking has gained the attention of the researchers. Owing to the unique properties of quantum mechanics, viz., quantum superposition and entanglement, this new area of quantum communication has shown potential to replace modernday communication technologies. The enhanced security and high information sharing ability using principles of quantum mechanics has encouraged networking engineers and physicists to develop this technology for next generation wireless systems. However, a conceptual bridge between the fundamentals of quantum mechanics, photonics and the deployability of a quantum communication infrastructure is not well founded in the current literature. This paper aims to fill this gap by merging the theoretical concepts from quantum physics to the engineering and computing perspectives of quantum technology. This paper builds the fundamental concepts required for understanding quantum communication, reviews the key concepts and demonstrates how these concepts can be leveraged for accomplishing successful communication. The paper delves into implementation advancements for executing quantum communication protocols, explaining how hardware implementation enables the achievement of all basic quantum computing operations. Finally, the paper provides a comprehensive and critical review of the state-of-the-art advancements in the field of quantum communication and quantum internet; and points out the recent trends, challenges and open problems for the real-world realization of next generation networking systems.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to set out the problems of modeling quantum communication and signal processing where the communication between systems via a non-Markovian channel. This is a general feature of quantum transmission lines. Our ultimate objective is to extend the networks rules that have been developed for Markovian models. To this end we recall the Hamiltonian description of such non-Markov models of transmission lines and their quantization. These have occurred in the context of non-quilibrium thermodynamics, but our interest is in the transmission lines as carriers of information rather than heat baths. We show that there is an analytic scattering matrix associated with these models and that stability may be formulated in terms of the lossless bounded real property. Noting that the input and output fields do not separately satisfy a non-self- demolition principle, we discuss the rigorous limit in which such models appear Markov and so amenable to standard approaches of quantum filtering and control

Abstract:Quantum information processing exploits the quantum nature of information. It offers fundamentally new solutions in the field of computer science and extends the possibilities to a level that cannot be imagined in classical communication systems. For quantum communication channels, many new capacity definitions were developed in comparison to classical counterparts. A quantum channel can be used to realize classical information transmission or to deliver quantum information, such as quantum entanglement. Here we review the properties of the quantum communication channel, the various capacity measures and the fundamental differences between the classical and quantum channels.
Correlation measures of a quantum state and information characteristics of a quantum channel

Abstract:We discuss the interconnections between basic correlation measures of a bipartite quantum state and basic information characteristics of a quantum channel, focusing on the benefits of these interconnections for solving specific problems concerning the characteristics of both types. We describe properties of the (unoptimized and optimized) quantum discord in infinite-dimensional bipartite systems. In particular, using the generalized Koashi-Winter relation, a simple condition is obtained that guarantees that a state with zero quantum discord is quantum-classical. Two possible definitions of the quantum discord for states with infinite one-way classical correlation are proposed and analysed. The generalized versions of Koashi-Winter and Xi-Lu-Wang-Li relations are used to obtain advanced continuity bounds for the Holevo information at the outputs of a channel and its complementary channel (as functions of a channel for a given ensemble of input states), for the Holevo capacity and the unregularized private capacity of a quantum channel depending either on the input dimension or on the input energy bound. We also discuss the properties of quantum channels which are "doppelgangers" of the monotonicity of the quantum discord and the entropy reduction of a local measurement under quantum channels acting on an unmeasured subsystem.

Quantum Analogues for Two Simple Classical Channels

Abstract:We present some of the peculiar dynamics of two simple sans-entanglement quantum communication channels in a digestible form. Specifically, we contrast the classical gaussian additive channel to its quantum analogue and find that the quantum version features a capacity with interesting time dependence and counterintuitive effects of quantization. We also consider a simple two-level system and comment on the time dependence of its capacity.

Abstract:Quantum channels describe subsystem or open system evolution. Using the classical Koopman operator that evolves functions on phase space, 4 classical Koopman channels are identified that are analogs of the 4 possible quantum channels in a bipartite setting. Thus when the complete evolution has a quantum-classical correspondence the correspondence at the level of the subunitary channels can be studied. The channels, both classical and quantum can be interpreted as noisy single particle systems. Having parallel classical and quantum operators gives us new access to study fine details of these major limiting theories. Using a coupled kicked rotor as a generic example, we contrast and compare spectra of the quantum and classical channel. The largest nontrivial mode of the quantum channel is seen to be mostly determined by the stable parts of the classical phase space, even those that are surprisingly small in relation to the scale of an effective $\hbar$. In the case when the dynamics has a significant fraction of chaos the spectrum has a prominent annular density that is approximately described by the single-ring theorem of random matrix theory, and the ring shrinks in size when the classical limit is approached. However, the eigenvalues and modes that survive the classical limit seem to be either scarred by unstable manifolds or, if they exist, stable periodic orbits.

Abstract:We investigate the transmission of classical and quantum information between three observers in a general globally hyperbolic spacetime using a quantum scalar field as a communication channel. We build a model for a quantum broadcast channel in which one observer (sender) wishes to transmit (classical and quantum) information to two other observers (receivers). They possess some localized two-level quantum system (a qubit) that can interact with the quantum field in order to prepare an input or receive the output of this channel. The field is supposed to be in an arbitrary quasifree state, the three observers may be in arbitrary states of motion, and no choice of representation of the field canonical commutation relations is made. The interaction of the field and qubits is such that it allows us to obtain the map that describes this channel in a non-perturbative manner. We conclude by analyzing the rates at which information can be transmitted through this channel and by investigating relativistic causality effects on such rates.
