Abstract:The author proposes ways of rethinking the concepts of the unconscious and time in the analytic setting, including the very existence of the unconscious. Freud (1915) stated that the success psychoanalytic thinking has in making inferences about the patient's unconscious makes the existence of the unconscious "incontrovertible." The author submits that this success does not establish the existence of the unconscious; rather, the inferences we think we make about the unconscious are inferences about consciousness itself - the totality of our experiences of thinking, feeling, sensing, observing, and communicating with ourselves. The author then offers thoughts about a second analytic concept, the experience of time in the analytic setting. He conceives of there being two inseparable sorts of experiences of analytic time that stand in a dynamic relationship with one another: diachronic time (clock time) and synchronic time (dream time). In diachronic time, time is sequential; one thing leads to another. In synchronic time, all time is contained in the present. In analysis, childhood trauma is experienced for the first time (in synchronic time) in the co-created subjectivity of patient and analyst.

What is psychoanalysis now?

Abstract:Firstly, Freud's classical statement that every treatment that takes into account the phenomena of transference and resistance deserves the designation psychoanalysis is critically examined in a current, post-classical context. The confusion as a consequence of the fact that two different concepts of transference are often used indiscriminately is elucidated. Likewise, the dynamic conditions of two types of resistance--the classical type, as a result of internal conflict, and the interactional type, having to do with empathic failure and countertransference--are disentangled and related to current ideas on two types of conflict, convergent and divergent. This is technically reflected in the understanding of two types of therapeutic action: a nonverbal, object-relational factor as distinguishable from the effect of insight and interpretation. Finally, the dialectics of insight and relation are theoretically clarified through the clinical concepts of background and foreground, which are clinically bound to the concrete psychoanalytical situation and form a tool to distinguish the two types of transference, resistance and conflict.

Abstract:The author believes that contemporary psychoanalysis has shifted its emphasis from the understanding of the symbolic meaning of dreams, play, and associations to the exploration of the processes of thinking, dreaming, and playing. In this paper, he discusses his understanding of three forms of thinking-magical thinking, dream thinking, and transformative thinking-and provides clinical illustrations in which each of these forms of thinking figures prominently. The author views magical thinking as a form of thinking that subverts genuine thinking and psychological growth by substituting invented psychic reality for disturbing external reality. By contrast, dream thinking--our most profound form of thinking-involves viewing an emotional experience from multiple perspectives simultaneously: for example, the perspectives of primary process and secondary process thinking. In transformative thinking, one creates a new way of ordering experience that allows one to generate types of feeling, forms of object relatedness, and qualities of aliveness that had previously been unimaginable.

Abstract:The experience of time has been studied psychoanalytically largely through the conceptual frameworks of ego psychology and classical analysis. The implications of self psychology and Lacanian theory for understanding time experience have been relatively little explored. These implications would develop, on the one hand, from Kohut's investigations of fragmentation phenomena and, on the other, from Lacan's concept of the ego and his use of the short session. But time experience cannot be understood entirely in terms of individual histories and the psychoanalytic situation. A preoccupation with time is central to Western culture and is traceable to the social context—thirteenth-century monasticism—in which the clock was first invented. Time enters the analytic session especially in the handling of beginnings and ends, reflecting divergent notions of the purpose of treatment. The standing of time-frame rules in the different systems defined by ego psychology, self psychology, and Lacanian theory are examined together with their underlying assumptions about the nature of reality. These metaphysical issues—no longer academic but made concretely meaningful in each session—go beyond illuminating the concept of time. Our response to them will determine both the direction of each patient's treatment and the course of psychoanalysis itself.

Abstract:What makes us think of one patient as “analytic” and another one not? What is at stake when we make the case for the deep engagement fostered by a psychoanalysis? Using a clinical example, the author examines enactments in which the analyst unconsciously avoids substantive involvement with patients likely to entail contact with her most disavowed aspects of self. The importance of frequency is revisited given the contemporary foci on field theories and the ubiquitous influence of the analyst's subjectivity. The author argues that immersion in dyadic processes is required to understand why both participants may resist it. Epistemological shifts undermining objectivity and psychoanalysis’ diminished cultural prestige require the analyst to make the case for analysis. Yet, although the analyst's desire is necessary, her reliance on her individual sense of “fit” leaves her too dependent on each specific relational matrix to both express and protect her personal and professional selves.

Abstract:The concise curriculum vitae of the founder of existential analysis is followed by an introduction to the five stages of the development of that psychotherapy: the stage of learning, of practice, of criticism, of the alternative to psychoanalysis and of reconciliation. The criticism aimed especially at Freud's naturalism and at the concept of drive. These concepts were opposed by ontoanalytic doctrines derived from the Heidegger's ontoanalysis. The differences between both psychotherapies were exemplified by a presentation of the treatment of a "hysterical phobia" which was originally explained in psychoanalytic and later in ontoanalytic terminology.

Abstract:This paper argues that a conceptual conflation between biology and ontology has had a pervasive influence on psychoanalytic thinking about gender, particularly transgender phenomena. This has made it difficult to think about gender's relationship to the body outside of essentializing fantasies. The origins of the modern term gender and Freud's biological emphasis are addressed, followed by a more extensive engagement with contemporary psychoanalytic scholarship on trans. Finally, the paper proposes a framework for attending to gender's relationship to the body with greater nuance, turning to Freud's late drive theory to help us think in this complex area.

Reflections on Klein's radical notion of phantasy and its implications for analytic practice

Abstract:Analysts may incorporate many of Melanie Klein's important contributions (e.g., on preoedipal dynamics, envy, and projective identification) without transforming their basic analytic approach. In this paper I argue that adopting the Kleinian notion of unconscious phantasy is transformative. While it is grounded in Freud's thinking and draws out something essential to his work, this notion of phantasy introduces a radical change that defines Kleinian thinking and practice and significantly impacts the analyst's basic clinical approach. This impact and its technical implications in the analytic situation are illustrated and discussed.
The concept of the self in psychoanalytic theory and its philosophical foundations

Abstract:Concepts of "the self" in psychoanalytic theory have important philosophic underpinnings which may not be adequately appreciated. Both self psychology and ego psychology, with their contrasting positions on the self as a mental structure, retrace paths taken by Western philosophy beginning at least with Hume and Descartes. They reflect traditional philosophic questions, notably of a homuncular self internal to consciousness and the isolation of the subject from other selves. Psychoanalysis has not utilized Hegel's conception of the intersubjective origins of the self, in which the self emerges only in an encounter with another subject, although this approach is implicit in the work of Winnicott on the mother-infant dyad. This movement from a one- to a two-person psychology also presents conceptual problems, as illustrated by the psychoanalytic theories of Sartre and Lacan, who take up opposing positions on the status of consciousness and on intersubjectivity in the formation of the self. Sartre's phenomenology, with its emphasis on the questing nature of the subject in search of an identity, resonates with contemporary theories of narcissism in which the painful isolation of self from self-affirming and mirroring objects is central to clinical practice. Lacan's insight into the role of acquisition of language helps us to understand the formation of the subject in pursuit of a virtual selfhood, as Sartre described, but embedded within an intersubjective matrix.
Psychoanalysis as a theory of therapy

Abstract:The development of psychoanalytic theory is traced from its origins in Freud's early thinking in terms of his advancing clinical experience. While the influence of clinical experience on the modifications of theory has long been accepted, little attention has been paid to the broad spectrum effects of changing theoretical perspectives on the technique of clinical psychoanalysis. This development is traced through the emergence of ego psychology and the dominance of the structural theory to more current developments having to do with object relations and the theory narcissism. The residual theoretical ambiguities and clinical perplexities are illustrated in two clinical cases. The development of psychoanalytic theory and the correlative aspects of technique are seen as manifesting an organic developmental process which has led to an increasing sophistication of analytic intervention and a broadening capacity for dealing with increasingly difficult and less classical types of cases. The conclusion is drawn that therapeutic lestening is equivalently an informed listening, and it is theory that lends understanding and sensitivity to the hearing process. It is theory that is to be put in the service of listening, rather than listening to be put in the service of theory.
Some reflections on identification

Abstract:The author presents a view of identification based on a rereading of two of Freud's key texts and an approach derived from an academic interpretation of Hegel dating from the 1930s. These aspects are considered at length. The importance of the human and anthropogenic element is stressed. The human subject is presented as coming into being through language; being called upon to be what he is not and not to be what he is, the subject appears as wishful in nature, desiring the wish of the other at the same time as he desires the object of the other's wish. The author argues that identification as a problem arises only in a human being who speaks or has received an injunction to speak; this raises the question of who or what he is and of being as such. Analytic treatment may in his view therefore proceed in one of two directions, one based on the interplay of projection and introjection with identification as an end, and the other on resistance and repression where the Oedipus complex is seen as the nuclear issue. Identification is seen in terms of overcoming the negative identity of not being all other subjects, and identity is found to be a conscious response that might even have a political element.
Psychoanalysis--a phenomenology of language

Abstract:It is often said that there is an unbridgeable gap between phenomenology and psychoanalysis. But this is only half the truth. Starting from Merleau-Ponty's proposal of an objectivistic and an idealistic divergence of Freud's enterprise the paper tries to reconstruct two possible movements: the objectivistic divergence of Husserl's enterprise as a phenomenological shift towards psychoanalysis and the idealistic divergence of Freud's enterprise as a psychoanalytical shift towards phenomenology. It is shown that this approach is possible on the field of language and semiotics where psychic life, as the essence of our subjectivity, may be rendered as a uniform phenomenon of an articulation in the world of signs. This thesis is elucidated at the end of the paper by discussing first (to the phenomenological side) a certain interpretation of the use of Husserl's reduction as a method of investigation in psychiatry and second (to the psychoanalytic side) the importance of Lacan's difference between repression and foreclosure for a psychopathological understanding of psychosis.

On the nature of transference interpretation and why only it can bring about analytic change

Abstract:Transference interpretation has always been regarded as very important to psychoanalytic practice. However, analysts differ on its centrality relative to other forms of intervention. This paper argues that transference interpretation as introduced by Freud and then taken up and developed by Klein ("transference interpretation proper") is, in fact, the only form of intervention that could bring about essentially analytic change. To understand why, a taxonomy of different forms of intervention commonly practiced within the analytic situation is presented, including interventions that relate to transference, but do not constitute transference interpretation proper. The latter kind is then described in detail. Next, the paper defines analytic change. It relies on a particular perspective on what it is to come to know psychic truth; one that sees such knowing as a lived state of mind, rather than a state of having knowledge about one's dynamics. This foundational Freudian perspective has been especially advanced through Klein's notion of phantasy. Given this view of analytic change it becomes clear that it can only be brought about through transference interpretation proper. The paper also addresses reasons why it seems especially difficult to embrace this view in contemporary psychoanalytic culture, while stressing how crucial it is to do so.

Abstract:This paper follows our previous one, where we described a psychoanalytic conception of language, thought, and internalization that is informed by the thinking of Lev Vygotsky. Here, several aspects of the analytic process which allow for the understanding of ineffable experiences in the analysand's history and the analytic situation are investigated: specifically, primal repression, metaphor, and the role of speech in free association. It is suggested that Freud's notion of primal repression be revived and redefined as one aspect of the descriptive unconscious. Some implications of primal repression for transference and resistance are explored. The metaphoric in its broad sense is examined as one example of how early dynamic experiences embedded in the process of language acquisition can be reached within the clinical situation. It is proposed that an understanding of free association is enhanced by awareness of distinctions between inner, egocentric, and social speech. The basic rule can be interpreted as an invitation for the analysand to use inner speech in collaboration with the analyst as best he or she can. Further, the aliveness and degree of superficiality of the analysis can be seen as a function of the analyst's ability to appreciate the properties of inner speech and foster the conditions in the analysis that allow for its unfolding.

Abstract:Infant development research has proposed links between early development and adult personality and psychopathology. Although clinicians have long taken these for granted, these research approaches raise a number of methodological and clinical issues worth exploring. Analysts have relied on varied formulations of “psychic structure,” but these are sometimes elusive and have not lent themselves to the precision, specificity, and validation that some analysts and many developmentalists prefer. New models have emerged over the last decades, including conceptions of internal working models of attachment, implicit relational knowing, and the like. Attachment research has shown strong correlations between infant attachment classification and adult personality. Recent research such as that of Beebe, Jaffe, and their colleagues has extended the correlations between early mother–infant interaction patterns and adulthood. All of this supports clinicians' interest in attention to the details of analyst–patient interaction, emotion regulation, inersubjective meaning-making, and other markers that can be observed in both infancy and adult analysis.

Abstract:Erich Fromm offered two key psychoanalytic concepts that bridge the psychic and the social: social unconscious and social character. In his view, these concepts are not only critical for understanding socio-historical phenomena but also ought to inform psychoanalytic clinical practice such that it might resist unconsciously encouraging patients to adapt to inequitable social conditions. This essay pays tribute to Fromm's thinking while elaborating some of the differences between Fromm's understanding of social unconscious/social character and my own. I argue that "social unconscious" does not quite capture the dynamic and conflictual nature of unconscious process, the ongoing conflict that social demands for conformity create in subject formation. To address that conflict, I propose the bridging concept of normative unconscious processes, processes that are always in conflict with counter-normative resistances. Points of both conflict and dissociation are precisely where analysts can challenge the psychic effects of oppressive social norms. Further, while agreeing with Fromm that analyzing social character ought to be central to clinical work, I argue that various and overlapping systemic oppressions – e.g. racism, heterosexism, classism – create, in any given society, multiple social characters and not just one dominant type. In agreement with Fromm's argument that analysts themselves need to reckon with their own social character, I stress the importance for all of us to be as aware as possible of our own identity investments and social locations within unequal and overlapping power hierarchies.
