Abstract:Crystal orientation in organic thin films is one of the key parameters that determine absorption cross‐section, interfacial energetics and excitonic states, and free charge properties. In this work, monolayer graphene is used to direct the crystal orientation of selected planar organic molecules. Lying‐down orientation with π‐stacking normal to the surface is achieved with graphene templating. The absorption spectra of the graphene‐templated films are correlated to molecular orientation. The same set of absorption features with or without graphene suggests that no vibronic states are forbidden or newly introduced. However, the light absorption with graphene templating is enhanced due to the altered relative orientation between the transition dipole moment of the constituent molecules and the electric field of incident light. The energy level of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of graphene templated p‐type films is observed at a deeper‐lying value (relative to vacuum) compared to untemplated diindenoperylene films grown on indium tin oxide. In contrast, the HOMO energy levels of graphene templated n‐type films are observed at higher‐lying energy levels (relative to vacuum) compared to the respective untemplated films due to surface dipoles. Such a change can potentially increase the theoretical V oc expected for photovoltaic devices incorporating these templated films. It is reported that graphene template layers can adjust the orientation of selected organic molecules in thin films. Significant optical and electronic ramifications of directed growth are observed. The energy level shifts upon graphene templating show that n‐type materials behave in an opposite manner to p‐type materials, which is explained using calculated electrostatic potential energy surfaces.

Abstract:A cost-effective and efficient route for graphene oxide (GO) patterning through site-selective deposition of GO onto a photopatterned self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of octadecylphosphonic acid on the surface of native oxide of titanium was demonstrated. In this process, SAMs on titanium oxide was first patterned via ultraviolet light exposure through a mask, subsequent drop-casting of GO aqueous dispersion on the substrate resulted in the site-selective deposition of GO on the hydrophilic areas. The formation of GO patterns is evidenced by Raman mapping. Atomic force microscopy studies indicate that the thickness of patterned GO can be controlled by adjusting the concentration of the GO dispersion. Scanning electron microscopy, and inverted fluorescence microscopy of large area GO patterns demonstrate this process is scalable and that the fluorescent property of nanoscale GO sheets is still reserved after deposition.
Preparation of Reduced Graphene Oxide by Infrared Irradiation Induced Photothermal Reduction

Abstract:We present a green and scalable route toward the formation of reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) by photothermal reduction induced by infrared (IR) irradiation, utilizing a bathroom IR lamp as the source of IR light. Thermogravimetric analysis, Raman, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm the reduction of r-GO by IR light. Ultraviolet-visible-infrared spectra indicate that adsorption of IR light by original GO films is less than that of UV and visible light; but when GO is exposed to IR light, its adsorption of IR light increases very rapidly with time. The influence of the power density of the IR light on the structure and properties of r-GO was investigated. At high IR power density, the reduction reaction was so fierce that r-GO became highly porous due to the rapid degassing and exfoliation of GO sheets. The r-GO powder revealed good performance as the anode material for lithium ion batteries. At relatively low IR power density, the reduction process was found to be mild but relatively slow. Crack-free and uniform conductive r-GO thin films with a volume conductivity of 1670 S m(-1) were then prepared by two-step IR irradiation, i.e. first at low IR power density and then at high IR power density. Moreover, the r-GO films were also observed to exhibit obvious and reversible IR light-sensing behavior.

Abstract:We report on a novel, efficient, and one-step approach to prepare single-layer reduced graphene oxide (RGO) suspensions and films using hydroxylamine hydrochloride. The effective chemical reduction of GO was evidenced by a significant increase in the C/O ratio and five orders of magnitude decrease in the GO resistance. Field-effect transistor gas sensors were fabricated using as-produced RGO sheets and the resulting sensor exhibited a fast response and a high sensitivity to low-concentration target gases at room temperature.

Abstract:Highly stable graphene oxide (GO)‐based multilayered ultrathin films can be covalently immobilized on solid supports through a covalent‐based method. It is demonstrated that when (3‐aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane (APTMS), which works as a covalent cross‐linking agent, and GO nanosheets are assembled in an layer‐by‐layer (LBL) manner, GO nanosheets can be covalently grafted on the solid substrate successfully to produce uniform multilayered (APTMS/GO)N films over large‐area surfaces. Compared with conventional noncovalent LBL films constructed by electrostatic interactions, those assembled using this covalent‐based method display much higher stability and reproducibility. Upon thermal annealing‐induced reduction of the covalent (APTMS/GO)N films, the obtained reduced GO (RGO) films, (APTMS/RGO)N, preserve their basic structural characteristics. It is also shown that the as‐prepared covalent (APTMS/RGO)N multilayer films can be used as highly stable source/drain electrodes in organic field‐effect transistors (OFETs). When the number of bilayers of the (APTMS/RGO)N film exceeds 2 (ca. 2.7 nm), the OFETs based on (APTMS/RGO)N electrodes display much better electrical performance than devices based on 40 nm Au electrodes. The covalent protocol proposed may open up new opportunities for the construction of graphene‐based ultrathin films with excellent stability and reproducibility, which are desired for practical applications that require withstanding of multistep post‐production processes.
Tuning the Multifunctional Surface Chemistry of Reduced Graphene Oxide via Combined Elemental Doping and Chemical Modifications

Abstract:The synthesis of graphene materials with multiple surface chemistries and functionalities is critical for further improving their properties and broadening their emerging applications. We present a simple chemical approach to obtain bulk quantities of multifunctionalized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) that combines chemical doping and functionalization using the thiol-ene click reaction. Controllable modulation of chemical multifunctionality was achieved by simultaneous nitrogen doping and gradual chemical reduction of graphene oxide (GO) using ammonia and hydrazine, followed by covalent attachment of amino-terminated thiol molecules using the thiol-ene click reaction. A series of N-doped rGO (N-rGO) precursors with different levels of oxygen groups were synthesized by adjusting the amount of reducing agent (hydrazine), followed by subsequent covalent attachment of cysteamine via the thermal thiol-ene click reaction to yield different ratios of mixed functional groups including N (pyrrolic N, graphitic N, and aminic N), S (thioether S, thiophene S, and S oxides), and O (hydroxyl O, carbonyl O, and carboxyl O) on the reduced GO surface. Detailed XPS analysis confirmed the disappearance of unstable pyridinic N in cys-N-rGO and the reduction degree threshold of N-rGO for effective cysteamine modification to take place. Our study establishes a strong correlation between different reduction degrees of N-rGO with several existing oxygen functional groups and addition of new tunable functionalities including covalently attached nitrogen (amino) and sulfur (C-S-C, C=S, and S-O). This simple and versatile approach provides a valuable contribution for practical designing and synthesis of a broad range of functionalized graphene materials with tailorable functionalities, doping levels, and interfacial properties for potential applications such as polymer composites, supercapacitors, electrocatalysis, adsorption, and sensors.

Abstract:The deposition and optoelectronic properties of reduced graphene oxide thin films are described. Thin films with thicknesses ranging from 1–10nm have been deposited by the vacuum filtration method. The conductivity of the thin films can be varied over six orders of magnitude by varying the filtration volume of the graphene oxide aqueous suspension while maintaining the transmittance between 60%–95%. In addition, enhancement in the conductance through Cl doping is demonstrated. The combination of the reduction and Cl treatments make the reduced graphene oxide thin films sufficiently conducting to incorporate them as the hole collecting electrode in proof of concept organic photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:As emerging semiconductors are integrated into organic thin film transistors (OTFTs), the use of templating layers improves device performance. Herein, four novel aromatic molecules are synthesized and incorporated as the template layer in bottom‐gate top‐contact OTFTs leading to changes in semiconductor molecular orientation and morphology and the resulting device performance. Multi‐phenyl and multi‐thiophene rod‐like molecules are typically used for weak epitaxial growth (WEG) of highly ordered organic semiconductor films enabling controllable microstructure properties and improved device performance. However, very few templating molecules have been reported, making it challenging to establish structure‐property relationships. As semiconductors are integrated into organic thin film transistors (OTFTs), the impact of templating layers on semiconductor microstructure and device performance must be established. Herein, four aromatic molecules with similar structure to para‐sexiphenyl (p‐6P) are synthesized and incorporated as the template layer in bis (pentafluoro phenoxy) silicon phthalocyanine (F10‐SiPc) OTFTs. The use of fluorinated p‐6P (p‐6PF) yields devices with the highest electron field‐effect mobility of 0.14 cm2 V−1 s−1 while a partially fluorinated p‐6P (p‐6PF4) results in improved threshold voltage. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrates varying F10‐SiPc crystallinity with choice of templating layer with the most crystalline films resulting from the use of p‐6PF. By grazing incidence wide angle X‐ray scattering (GIWAXS) and polarized Raman microscopy, all templating layers yield films with F10‐SiPc molecules predominantly aligned face‐on to the substrate. However, rod‐like p‐6P derivatives increased the face‐on orientation of F10‐SiPc. This study highlights the importance of template layer selection and deposition optimization in WEG‐based OTFTs.

Abstract:Reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) has the distinct advantage of an aqueous and industrial-scalable production route. However large deviation in the electrical resistivity of fabricated rGO devices, caused by inhomogeneous coverage of rGO on the substrate, prevents its practical application in electronic devices. This critical problem could be solved by using an ethanol chemical vapour deposition (CVD) treatment on graphene oxide (GO). With the treatment, not only GO is reduced to rGO, but also rGO preferentially grows outwards from the edges of the existing GO template and enlarge in size until rGO completely covers the substrate. The growth sequence is presented and our results indicate that the growth supports the free radical condensate growth mechanism. After the ethanol CVD treatment, the standard deviation in electrical resistivity decreased significantly by 99.95% (1.60 x 10(6) to 7.72 x 10(2) Omega per square) in comparison with hydrazine-reduced rGO substrates. As no carbon signatures on the substrate were observed when no template was used, this work indicates that GO could act as a template for subsequent formation of rGO.

Abstract:The utilization of graphene oxide (GO) thin films as the hole transport and electron blocking layer in organic photovoltaics (OPVs) is demonstrated. The incorporation of GO deposited from neutral solutions between the photoactive poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT):phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) layer and the transparent and conducting indium tin oxide (ITO) leads to a decrease in recombination of electrons and holes and leakage currents. This results in a dramatic increase in the OPV efficiencies to values that are comparable to devices fabricated with PEDOT:PSS as the hole transport layer. Our results indicate that GO could be a simple solution-processable alternative to PEDOT:PSS as the effective hole transport and electron blocking layer in OPV and light-emitting diode devices.

Abstract:In this study, we report a scalable, fast, and easy method for preparation of organophilic chemically functionalized graphene (OCFG) sheets. The basic strategy involved the preparation of graphite oxide (GO) and the complete exfoliation of GO into graphene oxide sheets, followed by reacting with 1-bromobutane to obtain OCFG sheets. Thermogravimetric analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated the functionalization of GO. Transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to demonstrate the structure of produced graphene oxide and OCFG sheets. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy confirmed that OCFG sheets disperse well in organic solvents and the solutions obey Beer's law. The resulting organic dispersions are homogeneous, exhibit long-term stability, and are made up of graphene sheets a few hundred nanometers large. The ability to prepare graphene dispersions in organic media facilitates their combination with polymers to yield homogeneous composites.

Abstract:Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) has inherited the outstanding electronic, optical, thermal and mechanical properties of graphene to a large extent, while maintaining sufficient chemically active sites. Therefore, it has attracted a great deal of research attention in the fields of energy storage, electronics, photonics, catalysis, environmental engineering, etc. Currently, the most popular way to prepare rGO is to reduce graphene oxide, which is obtained by modified Hummer methods using tedious treatments in a harsh environment, to rGO flakes. Industrial applications demand advanced preparation methods that can mass produce highly uniform rGO sheets on arbitrary substrates. In this work, a one-step growth process is introduced that utilizes cellulose acetate as a precursor, without any catalysts, to produce uniform ultrathin rGO films on various substrates and free-standing rGO powders. Systematic spectroscopic and microscopic studies on the resulting rGO are performed. Prototypes of electronic and optoelectronic devices, such as field effect transistors (FETs), photodetectors, and humidity sensors, are fabricated and tested, demonstrating the intriguing applications of our rGO materials across a wide range of fields.

Abstract:Composite coatings containing reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane functionalised rGO (APTES-rGO) were prepared by sol-gel technology and deposited on Al 2024 T-3. Covalent functionalisation of GO by APTES occurred by formation of amide bonds, accompanied by GO reduction. The thin sheets were retained. The hydrophilicity of the coating increased when APTES-rGO was added. The opposite was observed when GO was added. A key finding is that the rGO flakes agglomerate and lie in a random orientation in the coating, whereas the APTES-rGO flakes are more evenly distributed in the matrix and appear to lie along the plane of the substrate.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) flakes were self-assembled from solution on surfaces of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), varying in the chemical structure of their head groups. The coverage density of GO relates to strength of attractive interaction, which is largest for Coulomb interaction provided by positively charged SAM head groups and negatively charged GO. A rough surface enhances the coverage density but with the same trend in driving force dependency. The self-assembly approach was used to fabricate field-effect transistors with reduced GO (rGO) as active layer. The SAMs as attractive layer for self-assembly remain almost unaffected by the reduction from GO to rGO and serve as ultra-thin gate dielectrics in devices, which operate at low voltages of maximum 3 V and exhibit a shift of the Dirac voltage related to the dipole moment of the SAMs.
Surface And Interface Engineering Of Graphene Oxide Films By Controllable Photoreduction

Abstract:We report herein the engineering of the surface/interface properties of graphene oxide (GO) films by controllable photoreduction treatment. In our recent works, typical photoreduction processes, including femtosecond laser direct writing (FsLDW), laser holographic lithography, and controllable UV irradiation, have been employed to make conductive reduced graphene oxide (RGO) microcircuits, hierarchical RGO micro-nanostructures with both superhydrophobicity and structural color, as well as moisture-responsive GO/RGO bilayer structures. Compared with other reduction protocols, for instance, chemical reduction and thermal annealing, the photoreduction strategy shows distinct advantages, such as mask-free patterning, chemical-free modification, controllable reduction degree, and environmentally friendly processing. These works indicate that the surface and interface engineering of GO through controllable photoreduction of GO holds great promise for the development of various graphene-based microdevices.

Abstract:A facile solution process for the fabrication of organic single crystal semiconductor devices which meets the demand for low-cost and large-area fabrication of high performance electronic devices is demonstrated. In this paper, we develop a bottom-up method which enables direct formation of organic semiconductor single crystals at selected locations with desired orientations. Here oriented growth of one-dimensional organic crystals is achieved by using self-assembly of organic molecules as the driving force to align these crystals in patterned regions. Based upon the self-organized organic single crystals, we fabricate organic field effect transistor arrays which exhibit an average field-effect mobility of 1.1 cm 2 V −1 s −1 . This method can be carried out under ambient atmosphere at room temperature, thus particularly promising for production of future plastic electronics.
Tailored Nanoarchitectures: MoS₂/Graphene and MoS2/Graphene Oxide Thin Films via Liquid-Liquid Interfacial Route

Abstract:The nanostructured assembly of different two-dimensional (2D) materials in specific organization is crucial for developing materials with synergistic properties. In this study, we present a general methodology to prepare thin, transparent and self-assembled films of 2D/2D composites based on molybdenum sulfide (MoS2)/graphene oxide (GO) or MoS2/reduced graphene oxide (rGO), through the liquid/liquid interfacial route. Different nanoarchitectures are obtained by changing simple experimental parameters during the thin film preparation steps. The films were characterized by UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and cyclic voltammetry, evidencing that the experimental route used plays a role in the organization and properties of the assembled nanoarchitectures. Likewise, nanostructures of MoS2/GO and MoS2/rGO prepared through the same route have different organizations due to the different interactions between the materials. This showcases the potential of the technique to prepare tailored nanoarchitectures with specific properties for various applications, paving the way for innovative nanotechnology and materials science applications.
Improved Organic Electrochemical Transistors via Directed Crystallizable Small Molecule Templating

Abstract:Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are of great interest as biosensors and for flexible electronics applications. Historically, processing techniques have been widely used to improve the performance of polymers in organic electronics but have been underutilized in the field of OECTs. Here, we study the effects of a crystallizable small molecule template for improving the performance of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT)-based OECTs. We utilize 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene (TCB) as a crystallizable additive to induce directional crystallization during blade coating. This procedure results in an aligned, highly ordered, and moderately porous layer of the semiconducting polymer. We find that compared to neat P3HT solutions, films cast with TCB additive show a greater than 8× improvement in the steady state figure of merit for OECTs. Additionally, the optimum TCB loading produces anisotropic OECTs where the polymer chain aligned parallel to the current outperforms the perpendicular alignment by more than a factor of 10. We investigated the mechanism of this improvement and found that polymer alignment, polymer ordering, and film porosity all play a role in improving the device performance. Overall, these results demonstrate the importance of processing on the optimization of polymers for OECTs and suggest a route to greatly improve the performance of commercially available hydrophobic polymers.
