Abstract:An amphiphilic terpolymer P(MMA-BA-PEOM) was synthesized by free radical polymerization and used as the macromolecular additive in the preparation of PVDF blend membranes. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of terpolymers was controlled with a wide range from −6 to 40°C by adjusting the feed ratio of rigid monomer MMA to soft monomer BA. The increase of static contact angle of copolymer with PBA content indicated that softer chain can facilitate the hydrophobic parts of the additive segregation to the surface of a polymer film at the solid–air interface. The observation of morphology of the extracted PVDF blend membrane verified that P(MMA-BA-PEOM) could facilitate the surface segregation. Filtration experiment showed that PVDF membrane modified by terpolymer P(MMA-BA-PEOM) has a higher pure water flux (365Lm−2h−1) and relative flux recovery (71%) than that modified by bipolymer P(MMA-co-POEM).
Taming the Phase Transition Ability of Poly(vinylidene fluoride) from α to γ′ Phase

Abstract:The transition of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) α crystals to γ′ phase is, in general, unpredictable. In the present work, the related α–γ′ phase transition has been regulated through adjusting the thermal treatment protocol of the sample. The enhanced α–γ′ phase transition ability has been achieved through stepwise melt crystallization of PVDF. It consists of three steps, including (i) isothermal crystallization at Tc1 for tc1, (ii) quick cooling from Tc1 to room temperature at 25 °C, and (iii) isothermal annealing at a relative higher temperature of Tc2 for tc2. The obtained results demonstrate that the insufficient melting at Tc2 of the α-PVDF microcrystallites created during cooling from Tc1 to 25 °C promotes the γ-PVDF crystallization during tc2 with a curled lamellar structure. These γ-PVDF crystals accelerate the transition of α-PVDF spherulites formed at Tc1 into its γ′ counterpart simultaneously during annealing at Tc2. The α–γ′ conversion efficiency is confirmed to be dependent on the cooling rate from Tc1 to 25 °C as well as the annealing temperature of Tc2. A synergistic adjustment of the cooling rate from Tc1 to 25 °C and the Tc2 can result in a full transformation of the α-PVDF spherulites formed at Tc1 into γ′-PVDF spherulites. Preparation and Characterization of PVDF Film with Self-cleaning Property

Abstract:Based on the lotus effect principle,polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) solution was used to construct the microstructure under certain preparation conditions,and the nanostructure was established by plasma enhancing chemical bath deposition.The structural morphology and hydrophobicity were explored by scanning electronic microscopy,atomic force microscopy,and contact angle measuring meter.The experimental results show that PVDF can form smooth microreliefs with diameter about 8 μm on the coating surface,and the water contact angle of PVDF film is 88°.The network nanostructure is constructed by chemical bath deposition(CBD) method,the contact angle and the sliding angle on this surface are 157° and 4°,respectively.Meanwhile,the nanostructure similar to bird claw is constructed by chemical vapor deposition(CVD) method,the contact angle and the sliding angle on this surface are 155° and 4°,respectively.Self-cleaning test shows that the PVDF film prepared by both CBD and CVD method has excellent self-cleaning property.

Abstract:The preparation of polymorphism control of Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) by silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) is investigated. The Ag NPs were prepared by simple one step process from AgNO3, where N,N-dimethylformamide(DMF) act as reducing agent as well the solvent of the host polymer, PVDF. It was observed that PVDF is one of the best stabilizers of Ag NPs. The thick films (10-20 {\mu}m) were prepared by simple solution casting followed by solvent drying and crystallizing PVDF polymorph. Here we observed that PVDF polymorph can be control by the content of the Ag NPs regardless of other processing conditions. The formation piezoelectric polymorph ({\beta} phase) by adequate amount of Ag NPs doping in PVDF was explained by the specific interaction between the surface charge of the Ag NPs and electric dipoles (CF2 dipoles) comprising in PVDF. In this work we also address the suitable technique for correct crystallographic phase identification in PVDF, as a large number of works in this field have already been misled. The significant higher temperature shift of melting temperature of {\beta}-phase was observed by Ag NPs doping, which has prime importance in diverse fields of electronic applications, i.e. IR-sensors, piezoelectric and pyroelectric sensor,transducers as well as actuators.
Enhancement of β-phase in PVDF by electrospinning

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), a polymorphic material, has useful electro active properties such as piezo-, pyro-, and ferroelectric properties. The piezoelectric crystallization polymorph is the β-phase which has an all-trans (TTTT) conformation, i.e., all of its dipoles aligned in the same direction normal to the chain axis. Elongational deformation was applied to poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) / multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites. Its effect on the conversion of the α-phase crystals into the β-phase crystals and on the piezoelectric propertes was investigated. Elongational deformation of PVDF molecules made it easier for the CF2 groups to arrange themselves in the same conformation by reducing the steric hindrance. However, macro-deformation was dominant in the drawn films, though the interfacial interaction between the functional groups on the MWCNTs and the CF2 dipole of PVDF chains helped the conversion of α-phase. Uniform distribution of MWCNT in the electrospun films helps efficient charge accumulation at the interface between the MWCNTs and the matrix PVDF molecules. Deploarization effect occurred in the pressed film due to the excessive charge accumulation was not observed, resulting in the high conversion of α-phase into β-phase as well as the enhancement of remanent polarization and the mechanical displacement. Added MWCNT helps the film to be extended without rupturing.
Control over the complex phase evolutions for ultrahigh dielectric energy storage in pure poly(vinylidene fluoride) films

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is a basic polymer that has been extensively used in flexible electronics, with the properties differing in terms of multiple phases, e.g. α, β, and γ. As generally involved, processing induced phase variations have not yet been identified clearly, which furthermore often embarrasses the attributions and contributions in the properties and mechanisms. To this end, the phase compositions and evolutions in pure PVDF films are systematically tuned and explored by annealing and quenching processing. The annealed PVDF exhibits a predominant γ-phase, while α-phase is dominated in quenched PVDF. Upon the induced different phase compositions, the optimally processed PVDF films similarly exhibit an ultrahigh dielectric energy storage density e.g. 19.66 J cm−3 for annealed and 21.73 J cm−3 for quenched PVDF film, respectively, but only the former maintains a simultaneously high discharge efficiency of 65 %. With showing excellent energy storage performance, the processed especially the annealed PVDF film could compare to many existing high-performance dielectric energy storage systems. This work thus not only uncovers the phase evolutions as well as their impacts on the properties in PVDF system, but also demonstrates firstly a high energy storage performance in pure PVDF.

Abstract:In this work, a simple and efficient approach has been developed for preparing γ-PVDF films with a wide range of thickness based on the spontaneous diffusion of ionic liquids (ILs) into the α-PVDF matrix. It involves three steps: (i) preparation of α-PVDF films, (ii) surface coating of the resultant α-PVDF films with ionic liquids or quaternary ammonium solution, and (iii) annealing the surface modified PVDF thin film at a high temperature. In this way, the original α-PVDF film is then transferred into a γ-rich one through the well-known α–γ′ phase transition. The α–γ′ transition is found to be much faster and more efficient for high-temperature prepared samples. Abstract:Oriented polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) films were obtained in multistage process based on melt extrusion of polymer. We investigated the results of the polymorphic α→β crystalline phase transformation in the PVDF films subjected to uniaxial stretching. During uniaxial extension both appearance of a polar piezo active crystalline structure and significant changes in the samples morphology were observed. Variations in the PVDF films morphology, polymorphic composition, and supramolecular structure upon transformation were detected with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, wide-angle X-ray scattering, and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy was used to ascertain a change in molecular mobility of the polymer chains during α→β phase transformation. The relaxation processes, γ-, α а -, α с -, and interfacial polarization, in both α- and β-phases of PVDF were identified in the dielectric loss spectra and described with either Arrhenius or Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann equations. The analysis of the equations parameters allowed concluding that initiation of a polymorphic α→β transition through uniaxial extension results in hindering the relaxators mobility in the β-phase of PVDF samples, except γ-relaxators. This finding confirms a proposal that γ-relaxators are located in the amorphous part of PVDF. Uniaxial extension resulted in a substantial increase in the interfacial polarization, which can be attributed to the emergence of new interface boundaries.

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) exhibits pronounced polymorphs. Its γ phase is attractive due to the electroactive properties. The γ-PVDF is however difficult to obtain under normal crystallization condition. In a previous work, we reported a simple melt-recrystallization approach for producing γ-phase rich PVDF thin films through selective melting and subsequent recrystallization. We reported here another approach for promoting the αγ′ phase transition to prepare γ-phase rich PVDF thin films. To this end, a stepwise crystallization and subsequent annealing process was used. The idea is based on a quick generation of a large amount of α-PVDF crystals with some of their γ-PVDF counterparts at suitable crystallization temperature and then annealing at a temperature above the crystallization temperature for enhancing the molecular chain mobility to overcome the energy barrier of phase transition. It was found that crystallizing the PVDF melt first at 152 °C for 4 h, then quenching to room temperature and finally annealing the sample at 160 °C for 100 h was the most efficient to produce γ-PVDF rich films. This is related to the melting and recrystallization of the α-PVDF crystals produced during quenching in the annealing process at 160 °C, which favors the formation of γ-PVDF crystals for triggering the αγ′ phase transition.

Abstract:This research deals with the effect of process parameters of spin coating such as spinning speed, weight composition of silver nanoparticles (AgNP), and annealing duration on the phase change of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) thin films. FTIR spectroscopy along with XRD confirmed the transformation of α to β-phase in the PVDF thin films. The spin coated films exhibited higher β-fraction than that of the pristine PVDF. The β-fraction in the thin films was mainly influenced by the addition of AgNP. The DSC results showed decrease in crystallinity from 63.74 to 53.21% with increase in spinning speed from 1000 to 3000 rpm due to the over-stretching of crystalline lamellae.

Abstract:The poly(vinylidenefluoride-trifluoroethylene) /Ag composite films are derived by spin-coating and annealed at hydrogen atmosphere. Ag (111) phase labeled at the diffraction peak 2 theta = 38.1 is observed from X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, and it was also proved from scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. A blue shift was observed in the infrared transmission spectrum of the composite films, which suggests the interaction of dipole and silver nanoparticies. The ferroelectric polarization and dielectric constant of P(VDF-TrFE)/Ag composite thin films increase by 32.5% and 13. 3%, respectively, compared with the pure polymer films under air annealing. The dielectric loss tangent of the P (VDF-TrFE)/Ag composite films is independent of Ag doping ratios, which violates the percolation theory.

Abstract:ABSTRACTFerroelectric polymers have obtained much attention in low cost and flexible electronics. As one representative ferroelectric polymer, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) has been comprehensively studied. Due to its complicated phase composition, fabrication of electroactive phases has been an open question especially for PVDF thin films deposited on solid substrates. Here cooperative stretching process is introduced for the fabrication of electroactive PVDF thin films. PVDF thin films are coated on stretchable poly(vinyl alcohol) substrates and mechanically stretched under optimized stretching parameters. Structural, spectral, and electrical measurements indicate that cooperative stretching process can effectively convert the nonpolar α phase to the electroactive β and γ phases companied by an enhancement of film crystallinity. Stretched PVDF films present a reverse piezoelectric coefficient of −37 pm/V, comparable with the results from films fabricated by the other techniques. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Preparation of PVDF flexible piezoelectric film with high β-phase content by matching solvent dipole moment and crystallization temperature

Abstract:In Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer films, α-phase usually dominates and leads to weak electrical properties, limiting its applications in microelectronics. In this paper, the effects of dipole moment of the solvent and the crystallization temperature on β-phase content in PVDF films have been systematically investigated. Variations in crystalline phases were confirmed by using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results verified that larger dipole moment of the solvent is more beneficial to the formation of β-phase in PVDF films. PVDF films with high content of β-phase up to 98.8% are obtained by using dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as the solvent at optimized crystallizing temperature of 60 °C. The corresponding PVDF film with high β-phase content presents excellent ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties, with a remnant polarization (Pr) and piezoelectric coefficient (d33) of 7.7 μC/cm2 and − 25.8 pC/N, respectively. It is worth mentioning that this high d33 compares that of the expensive PVDF-based copolymers and complexes. The process displayed in this research provided a feasible method to the preparation of low cost PVDF films for flexible piezoelectric sensors and actuators.

Abstract:Poly (vinylidene fluoride)-based dielectric materials have attracted much attention in the field of high power density electric energy storage due to their ferroelectric properties, high dielectric breakdown strength and superior processability. However, it is a key challenge how to obtaining high content electroactive phases with ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties in PVDF. Up till now, researchers have prepared PVDF films with high content of electroactive phase via irradiation with high-energy electron-beam or γ-ray radiations and pressing-and-folding process. In this paper, P(VDF-HFP) films were prepared by controlled solvent evaporation method at different ambient temperature. The results showed that the morphologiy of the film showed insignificant changes with the increase of ambient temperature. Total contents of β and γ phases were nearly 100 % in the PVDF films prepared at ambient temperature below 110 °C. The microcrystals in P(VDF-HFP) was more and more perfect with the increase of the ambient temperature under the condition of controlled solvent evaporation. The films prepared at 70 °C showed a dielectric constant of 12.76 under the test condition of 100 Hz with the remnant polarization of 0.54 μC/cm 2 . All of these results demonstrated that the formation of the electroactive phase of P(VDF-HFP) thin films was related to the evaporation process and evaporate rate of the solvent.

Abstract:In this study, a simple method to obtain pure β-phase directly from the melt process is proposed. A series of PVDF and ionic liquid (IL) was prepared by a solvent casting method with appropriate associated with the subsequent annealing treatment. IL plays a role of filler, which can create strong electrostatic interaction with PVDF matrix and directly induce β-phase crystallization on the PVDF during the melt. PVDF film sample is immersed in hot water for annealing treatment at different temperatures (25 °C to 70 °C). We found that annealing in high temperatures especially can not only increase more IL inserted into the amorphous region of polymer matrix to make more phase transformation, but also accelerate IL removal. Characteristics and performance of the PVDF films were investigated by use of FTIR, XRD, SEM, and AFM. Piezoelectric coefficient d33 as well as d31, degree of crystallinity, and sensitivity are measured in experiment to verify the performance of PVDF film.

Abstract:β-phase poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) film boasts excellent electrical properties and can be utilized in sensors, micro-actuation and energy harvesting. The stretching process is an effective method to realize the phase transformation of PVDF from the α to β phase. Here, PVDF film was prepared by an extrusion-casting process and then stretched via a uniaxial stretching process with a dynamic mechanical analyzer. The effects of stretching conditions on the transformation from the α to β phase in PVDF film were studied. The phase composition was characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results reveal that the best stretching temperature is 80 °C, and the best stretch ratio is related to the length–width ratio of the film. In addition, increasing the stretching rate is beneficial to the formation of the β-phase with a maximum content of 80% under the best stretching conditions. High β-phase PVDF films were stretched by stretch-line equipment, and the β-phase content can reach 60%, realizing the potential for large-scale fabrication by roll-to-roll stretching method. The electrodeformation effect of PVDF films was studied, and the strain ratio is approximately 15% under an electric field intensity of 180 kV/mm. The piezoelectric coefficient of the films polarized by corona polarization can reach 11 pC/N.

Abstract:Polydopamine (PDA) layers and particles self-polymerized by dopamine have ultraviolet (UV) absorbing property besides versatility and adhesive ability. Herein, a facile strategy for preparing poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane coated with a thick PDA layer was developed to decrease UV transmittance through the surface modification of PVDF membrane. The PVDF membrane was modified by PDA deposition after pretreated with KOH/alcohol and KMnO4/KOH solution. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of coating conditions such as concentration of dopamine and Tris–HCl buffer solution, coating time, and temperature on the performance of membranes. The characterization results indicated that it is more conductive for PDA deposition on the surface PVDF-OH films than original PVDF films. Most importantly, UV transmittance of PVDF-OH film modified in dopamine solution under optimum condition for one time can decrease to as low as 0.122% at 320 nm, which showed excellent UV-shielding property. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Electrical Response of Different Crystalline Microregions in Poly(vinylidene fluoride)

Abstract:The crystal structure has a great influence on the dielectric and piezoelectric performance of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). In this work, we prepared PVDF films with two typical crystalline phases (α and β). In situ Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and Piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM) were employed to investigate the responses of different PVDF crystalline phases to charge mobility, polarization, and piezoelectric properties. We used a homemade Kelvin probe force microscope (KPFM) to inject charges into the two crystalline phases to investigate the differences in the response of different crystalline phases of PVDF to electrical excitation on a microscopic scale. It was found that the α-phase has a lower charge injection barrier and is more susceptible to charge injection and that the α-phase is accompanied by a faster charge dissipation rate, which makes it easier to accumulate charge at the interface between the α-phase and β-phase PVDF. Moreover, the PFM polarization manipulation showed no change in the amplitude and phase diagram of the α-phase under ±10 V bias. In contrast, the β-phase showed a clear polarization reversal phenomenon and a significant increase in piezoelectric amplitude, which is consistent with its polar intrinsic properties. This study provides valuable insights into the multiphase contributions and a reference for designing advanced PVDF dielectrics.

Abstract:The high quality properties and benefits of graphene-oxide have generated an active area of research where many investigations have shown potential applications in various technological fields. This paper proposes a methodology for enhancing the pyro-electricity of PVDF by graphene-oxide doping. The PVDF film with graphene-oxide is prepared by the sol-gel method. Firstly, PVDF and graphene-oxide powders are dispersed into dimethylformamide as solvent to form a sol solution. Secondly, the sol solution is deposited on a flexible ITO/PET substrate by spin-coating. Thirdly, the particles in the sol solution are polymerized through baking off the solvent to produce a gel in a state of a continuous network of PVDF and graphene-oxide. The final annealing process pyrolyzes the gel and form a β-phase PVDF film with graphene-oxide doping. A complete study on the process of the graphene oxide doping of PVDF is accomplished. Some key points about the process are addressed based on experiments. The solutions to some key issues are found in this work, such as the porosity of film, the annealing temperature limitation by the use of flexible PET substrate, and the concentrations of PVDF and graphene-oxide.
