Abstract:Abstract Modern aroid ( Alocasia, Amorphophallus, Colocasia, Cyrtosperma and Xanthosoma ) production is becoming intensive and oriented to the market, which requires cheap, healthy and high-quality products. The aim of taro breeding is to create genotypes that are high yielding, with corms of good eating quality, resistant to diseases, tolerant to pests and well adapted to specific environments (paddy or dryland conditions). This chapter discusses the breeding objectives and criteria, sexual reproduction and sterility, crossing techniques and true seed production, selection methods and programmes, heritability of major traits, and genotype × environment interactions of aroids. The use of related species, polyploidy breeding, use of molecular markers, transgenic technologies, and germplasm conservation are also described.
