Abstract:The current understanding on the oxygen transfer in activated sludge process is primarily developed based on two phase systems, focusing only on oxygen transfer from air to water. However, this research demonstrates that activated sludge particles significantly impact oxygen transfer from air all the way to the microorganisms. Three bench‐scale complete‐mix activated sludge reactors, operated under the same influent loading and dissolved oxygen level but different solids retention times (SRTs), were used to develop oxygen transfer performance data as effects of different sludge property parameters. These reactors were also operated under batch modes to further validate the effect of nitrification reaction and nitrifier population on oxygen transfer. Results indicate that high overall oxygen transfer efficiency (OTE) is associated with low mixed liquor viscosity, long SRT, and nitrification reaction. Further analyses suggest that low mixed liquor viscosity, resulted from high sludge settleability or low settled volume of sludge, reduces the thickness of liquid films at all interfaces and the size of air bubbles. Long SRT results in high active nitrifier population and low specific extracellular polymeric substance (EPS). Nitrification reaction, which serves as the rate‐limiting step for oxygen transfer, may increase the oxygen transfer driving force. High active nitrifier population also promotes direct air‐sludge contact. All of these factors help facilitate oxygen transfer. This research provides a new approach to improve energy efficiency for wastewater treatment, which is to change the activated sludge property through adjusting treatment plant design and operational parameters.

Abstract:The aerobic granular sludge (AGS) process treats wastewater with a significantly lower footprint and energy consumption compared to conventional activated sludge systems. Nevertheless, there is still potential for optimizing its performance, and mathematical models are most valuable tools to this end. Aeration energy consumption deserves particular attention, as it is the largest remaining operating cost for AGS systems. Batch-wisely operated reactors show an increasing oxygen transfer efficiency during aeration, which translates into a dynamic alpha factor. However, the dynamic nature of alpha is neglected in current models. The impact of this simplification on the operating performance was addressed for the first time in this study. Through the development of a novel 1-D biofilm reactor model, calibrated to a full-scale AGS plant, it was shown that the alpha dynamics affect both model structure and calibration, as well as the process performance. The description of the dynamic nature of alpha through the empirical relationship with the soluble biodegradable organic carbon required the addition of the state variable representing soluble slowly biodegradable organic carbon (S CB ) to the biokinetic ASM2d model. Simulation results showed that alpha dynamics significantly influences simultaneous nitrification and denitrification and therefore need to be included in mathematical models to optimize AGS process performance. Different process variables such as volume exchange ratio, aeration capacity and granule size can be manipulated to improve reactor design and performance. The practical application of these new insights were discussed regarding the optimization of AGS systems, as well as other batch-wisely operated aerobic wastewater treatment systems.

Abstract:Aerobic granules with mean radius of 0.25mm were cultivated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) fed with soybean-processing wastewater, and the gas holdup and oxygen transfer were investigated for this granule-based reactor. At the discontinuous point in the variation of gas holdup with superficial gas velocity at 1.73cm/s, bubble flow regime was changed into churn-turbulent flow one. Gas holdup of the granule-based SBR was greater than that of a floc-based SBR, indicating that higher oxygen transfer efficiency could be achieved in the former. The volumetric gas–liquid oxygen transfer coefficient increased with increasing superficial gas velocity, but declined with increasing solid fraction. Observed Thiele modulus and effectiveness factor were effectively used to describe the efficiency of oxygen diffusion in the granules and the oxygen utilization rate of the reactor. With the porous pellet model, the oxygen concentration profiles and effectiveness factor for aerobic granules with different sizes were predicted. Effectiveness factor of 0.98 for the granules with radius of 0.25mm suggests that the oxygen diffusion limitation could be neglected. For the granules with radius of 1.00mm, a severe oxygen limitation occurred, as indicated by an effectiveness factor of 0.55.
Activated sludge morphology significantly impacts oxygen transfer at the air–liquid boundary

Abstract:Oxygen transfer is a key process determining the energy use of a biological wastewater treatment process. In this research, we investigated the effect of sludge morphology, especially the role of filamentous microorganisms, on oxygen transfer using bench-scale complete-mix activated sludge reactors with solids retention times (SRTs) of 10-, 20-, and 40-days, respectively. Results indicated 5%-10% reduced aeration need in the 40-day SRT reactor, compared with 10- and 20-day SRT reactors to maintain the same dissolved oxygen level, due to the improvement in sludge settleability and oxygen transfer efficiency (OTE). Filamentous microorganisms adversely impacted OTE via an increase in apparent viscosity of the mixed liquor, which resulted in an increase in the air bubble size and liquid film thickness and, therefore, limited oxygen transfer at the air-liquid boundary. A statistical analysis also confirmed that the mixed liquor viscosity is a statistically significant parameter links to OTE. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Filamentous organisms reduce oxygen transfer via increasing mixed liquor viscosity, which increases air bubble size and liquid film thickness at the air-liquid boundary. Increasing solids retention time reduces filament density. As a result, very long solids retention time promotes oxygen transfer.

Abstract:This paper aimed to assess the impact of the cycle type on aerobic granular sludge (AGS) formation, stability and system performance. Six AGS reactors were operated either on A/O cycles (anaerobic followed by oxic phase) or A/O/A cycles (anaerobic, followed by oxic and anoxic phases), changing only the phase time distribution. Reactors with high percentage of aerobic phase (65% of the total cycle time) generated granules with better settleability and resistance, however denitrification was impaired. On the other hand, reactors with long anaerobic or anoxic phases presented excellent nutrients removals, but the granules were fluffy and unstable. The best results in terms of performance and stability were achieved in an A/O/A reactor with short anoxic phase (10% of the total cycle) and medium aerobic phase (55% of the total cycle). Therefore, in AGS reactors, it is indispensable to optimize the cycle, aiming at fast biomass formation, long-term granule stability and high-rate pollutants removal.

Abstract:The granule floatation is a serious issue of the anammox (anaerobic ammonium oxidation) process when high loading rates are applied that results in instability or even system collapse. The present study reports the granule floatation in an anammox reactor when high loading rates were applied. The comparison of enlarged photos taken for the settling and floating granules showed that the two kinds of granules both contained macroscopic gas pockets accounting for 11 +/- 14% of total volume. The settling granules had gas tunnels that could release the gas bubbles, while the floating granules did not. The presence of gas bubbles enclosed in the gas pockets led to the small density of 979.2 +/- 15.8 mg L(-1) and flotation of anammox granules. Consequently, the flotation caused washout of anammox granules and the deterioration of anammox process (volumetric removal rate decreased from 4.00 to 2.46 kg N m(-3) d(-1)). The collection of floating granules, breaking them into small pieces and then returning to the anammox reactor proved an effective control strategy. The volumetric removal rate was finally up to 16.5 kg N m(-3) d(-1) after the control strategy was put into use.

Abstract:Retrofitting wastewater treatment plants with continuous aerobic granular sludge reactors is a promising alternative to enhance treatment capacities and reduce footprint. This study investigates the main variables influencing granulation and microbial dynamics in two reactor configurations (25 L): stirred tanks in series (R1) and a plug-flow-like system (R2). Granule formation was achieved by increasing the organic loading rate (OLR) from 0.7 to 4.1 kg COD/(m 3 ·d) and the up-flow velocity in the biomass selector from 1.4 to 6.9 m/h. However, irreversible granule destabilization occurred at day 68 for R1 and day 108 for R2. Principal component analysis and examination of food-to-microorganisms (F/M) ratio medians identified the F/M ratio as the primary variable associated with instability. Microbial analysis revealed that a high F/M ratio induced significant increases in the abundance of specific genera such as Arcobacter , Cloacibacterium , Rikenella , Aquaspirillum and Sphaerotillus , whose overgrowth may negatively impact granule stability. Based on these findings, maximum F/M ratio thresholds were obtained to establish operational conditions allowing the maintenance of stable aerobic granules on continuous flow reactor configurations.

Abstract:In the last years, the upgrading of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) could be required in order to comply with the more stringent regulation requirements. Nevertheless, the main issue is related to the surface availability. A proper solution could be represented by the attached biomass processes, in particular the moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR), that have a significant footprint reduction with respect to conventional activated sludge (CAS). However, MBBR showed an important disadvantage: the poor aeration energy efficiency due to the use of coarse bubble diffusers, which guarantee high reliability and low maintenance costs with respect to fine bubble ones. Moreover, the presence of carriers inside the reactor emphasizes this aspect. The aim of this work is to verify the benefits achievable by installing a fine bubble aeration system inside a MBBR system. The comparison, in terms of oxygen transfer efficiency, between a medium bubble aeration system and a fine ceramic bubble diffuser was studied and the effect of biofilm growth on oxygen transfer was assessed. Several tests were carried out in order to test the operation of a coarse and a fine bubble side aeration at different air flow rates, both in clean water conditions, in order to evaluate the influence of carriers (Chip M type) on the aeration efficiency, both in wastewater conditions with the aim to assess the effect of bacteria growth on the carriers. The main results are the following: (i) the fine bubble system placed off-center ensured good mixing even without using the mixer; (ii) the fine bubble side aeration system compared to the coarse ones did not show significant advantages in terms of oxygen transfer efficiency; (iii) the increase in specific air flow rate negatively influenced the aeration efficiency; (iv) the presence of biomass had a positive effect on the oxygen transfer yield.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the impact of the aerator position on the dissolved oxygen spatial distribution and stability of aerobic granular sludge (AGS). Three SBRs with 2.5 mm mesh screen were established under condition of different aerator positions, the aerators of R1, R2 and R3 were set at the bottom, 1/6 and 1/3 height of reactors, respectively. The results revealed that R2 was more favorable to improve the sludge settling behavior and structural stability of AGS, resulting in 83.7 +/- 1.4 % of total nitrogen (TN) removal. However, R3 led to an anoxic environment at the bottom of reactor, which prevented the formation of AGS and made a large amount of sludge lost. DO distribution indicated that oxygen content at the bottom of R2 was at the optimum range of 18.9 %-20.1 %, being beneficial to realize the simultaneous nitrification-denitrification. Therefore, the functional microbes of Zoogloea spp. (17.4 %), Paracoccus spp. (12.5 %), Thaurea spp. (13.6 %) and Rhodobacter spp. (10.8 %) were highly enriched in R2. Overall, raising the aerator position to 1/6 height of reactor led to 7.4 % increase of TN removal efficiency and 15.4 % decrease of energy consumption, which favors the application of AGS technology.

Abstract:Residence time distribution studies on laboratory and pilot scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors (UASB) were carried out in order to measure and evaluate the influence, on the reactor's hydraulic performance, of the biogas collection device position (gas-liquid-solid separator), of the presence of granular sludge and of the arrangement of the influent distribution system within the reactor. The main purpose of the pilot scale experiment was to assess the influence of the biogas collection device on the reactor hydraulic performance accurately. The results show that if the biogas collector system is located in a lower position (nearer to the sludge bed), the dead volume fraction decreases and a better performance of the settler could be obtained. In addition, it can be appreciated that the mixed flow pattern has more dead volume fraction than a plug flow hydraulic pattern.

Abstract:Aerobic granular sludge is a compact and efficient biofilm process used for wastewater treatment which has received much attention and is currently being implemented worldwide. The microbial associations and their ecological implications occurring during granule development, especially those involving inter-kingdom interactions, are poorly understood. In this work, we monitored the prokaryote and eukaryote community composition and structure during the granulation of activated sludge for 343 days in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and investigated the influence of abiotic and biotic factors on the granule development. Sludge granulation was accomplished with low-wash-out dynamics at long settling times, allowing for the microbial communities to adapt to the SBR environmental conditions. The sludge granulation and associated changes in microbial community structure could be divided into three stages: floccular, intermediate, and granular. The eukaryotic and prokaryotic communities showed parallel successional dynamics, with three main sub-communities identified for each kingdom, dominating in each stage of sludge granulation. Although inter-kingdom interactions were shown to affect community succession during the whole experiment, during granule development random factors like the availability of settlement sites or drift acquired increasing importance. The prokaryotic community was more affected by deterministic factors, including reactor conditions, while the eukaryotic community was to a larger extent shaped by biotic interactions (including inter-kingdom interactions) and stochasticity.

Abstract:Abstract The promotion and inhibition of inactivated and activated sludge on oxygen mass transfer ( OMT ) were studied using lab‐scale experiments. The results showed that the α‐values and oxygen transfer efficiency ( OTE ) decreased with increasing mixed liquor suspended solids ( MLSS ) concentration (1–10 g/L). Although OMT promotion rate by microbial respiration in activated sludge system increased from 39.8–97.5% for the α‐values and OTE , the two parameters were found to fall sharply when MLSS concentration was over 5 g/L. This indicated that the sludge concentration is a major influence factor on OMT in activated sludge system. Such results provide valuable knowledge for the operating optimization of the aeration system in wastewater treatment process.

Abstract:Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) plants have gained growing interest and application due to their low energy demand, small footprint, and low operational costs. However, the fulfilment of strict discharge limits for nitrogen and phosphorus, vast seasonal temperature variations, and large peaks in influent flows may pose challenges to the implementation of AGS. Moreover, knowledge about the microbial community assembly and process performance under varying environmental conditions in full-scale reactors is still limited. In two full-scale AGS reactors, the start-up was associated with rapid changes in microbial community composition. One reactor was reseeded with biomass from the other, due to unsuccessful granulation. This resulted in a convergence of the microbial communities in the two reactors with the maintenance of stable sludge concentrations (6-8 g/L) with large granules (50-80% with diameter >2 mm) and fast settling of biomass (SVI30/SVI10 of 0.9-1). Mass flow immigration from the influent wastewater was a minor factor affecting the microbial community once the granules had formed, while the seasonal variations in environmental factors were identified as important. Key guilds of AOB (Nitrosomonas), NOB (mainly Ca. Nitrotoga), PAOs (mainly Tetrasphaera), and GAOs (mainly Competibacter) varied considerably in abundance throughout the study period. After 15 months, stable organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus removal were attained with low effluent concentrations. During the start-up, the BOD7/N ratio, influent flow, and temperature were important factors influencing the performance of the AGS.

New insights into the effect of surfactants on oxygen mass transfer in activated sludge process

Abstract:Surfactants have been thought to significantly reduce oxygen transfer in activated sludge processes through reductions to oxygen diffusion at the air-liquid interface. However, this mechanistic understanding may not completely describe interactions between surfactants and biomass which can affect oxygen transfer. In this study lab-scale complete-mix activated sludge reactors with SRTs of 10 d, 20 d and 40 d were used to reevaluate the impacts of a commonly used surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), on oxygen transfer. A 10 mg L-1 SDS feed concentration substantially increased oxygen transfer efficiency (OTE) for 10 day and 20 day SRT reactors, respectively, and slightly increased OTE for the 40 d SRT reactor. A 50 mg L-1 SDS feed concentration slightly increased OTE for the 10 d SRT reactor, significantly increased OTE for the 20 d SRT reactors, but significantly decreased OTE for the 40 d SRT reactor, as compared to the influent feed without SDS. These results were not consistent with the conventional explanations. Reactor effluent testing, dynamic oxygen uptake and oxygen transfer rate testing of the mixed liquor, and system response analysis also demonstrated that the influent SDS did not directly impact the oxygen transfer performance. Results from a principal component analysis approach confirmed that the activated sludge morphological parameters, not the SDS in the influent, were most significant factors that impact OTE. Understanding the mechanisms through which surfactants affect oxygen transfer is critical to development of effective strategies for sustainable operation of wastewater treatment plants.

Performance of Anaerobic Granular Sludge Bed Reactor with Biogas Recirculation

Abstract:The performance of a lab-scale anaerobic granular sludge bed reactor with biogas recirculation treating synthetic wastewater was investigated in this paper.Without biogas recirculation,the sludge granulation was achieved within 18 days in this up-flow anaerobic bio-reactor,which was seeded with anaerobic flocculent sludge together with some granular activated carbon(GAC),the organic loading rate(OLR) of 15 kg COD·m~(-3)d~(-1)(based on the volume of reaction zone) and the COD removal efficiency of over 85% were achieved respectively.After the start of biogas recirculation with a gas up-flow velocity of about 2.1m·h~(-1),almost all granular sludge in the reactor was broken within 2 days,but the sludge re-granulation was achieved again within the following 49 days while keeping the OLR of 36 kgCOD·m~(-3)d~(-1).Thereafter,the OLR was rapidly increased to and maintained at about 90 kgCOD·m~(-3)d~(-1)and the COD removal efficiency was steadily over 95%.The biogas recirculation could enhance the mass transfer rate in the bulk liquid in the reactor,and the dispersion coefficient D in the reactor was as high as 0.368.

Abstract:Aerobic granular sludge is an interesting alternative to the conventional activated sludge (CAS) system and modified-Ludzack–Ettinger (MLE) process for biological wastewater treatment, as it allows a more cost-effective and simultaneous removal of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) compounds in a single stage. In this study, (micro)aerobic C and N removal from synthetic urban wastewater was investigated in a continuous-double-column-upflow aerobic granular sludge blanket (UAGSB) system. The UAGSB reactor was operated under different dissolved oxygen (DO) ranges (0.01–6.00 mg∙L−1), feed C/N ratios (4.7–13.6), and hydraulic retention times (HRTs) (6–24 h). At a DO range of 0.01–0.30 mg∙L−1, feed C/N ratio of 13.6, and HRT of 24 h, the UAGSB achieved the highest chemical oxygen demand (COD), N-NH4+, and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal efficiencies of 86, 99, and 84%, respectively. A preliminary assessment of the energy and economic savings associated with the process investigated was also carried out. The impact of capital and operating costs mainly related to the energy consumption of the aeration was taken into account. The assessment reveals that the capital and energy expenses of the UAGSB reactor would result in cost savings of around 14 and 7%, respectively, compared with a MLE system.

Abstract:Algal-bacterial aerobic granular sludge (AB-AGS) as a symbiosis system possesses high potential for being operated without external O2 supply. In this study, a novel lab-scale closed photo-sequencing batch reactor (PSBR) was developed for AB-AGS operation under successively open (Phase Ⅰ) and closed (Phase Ⅱ) conditions. Results show that AB-AGS maintained almost 100% of organics removal, exhibiting higher removals of phosphate (63 ± 20%), K+ (19 ± 12%) and Mg2+ (26 ± 12%), and higher chlorophylls content during Phase II. Meanwhile, only O2 besides N2 was detectable in the headspace of PSBR. The change of granular structure and faster algae growth during Phase Ⅱ may contribute to the increase of microbial activity and phosphorus bioavailability, in which lower extracellular polymeric substances content may account for low biomass retention. Results from this closed PSBR imply that AB-AGS has the potential to reduce some greenhouse gases like CO2 and CH4 emission.

Abstract:Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) has been successfully used in sequencing batch reactors. However, their application to existing continuous-flow systems remains challenging. In this study, a novel microaerobic-aerobic configuration with internal separators was implemented in a full-scale municipal wastewater treatment facility with a nominal capacity of 2.5 × 104 m3 d-1. Sludge characteristics, pollutant removal and associated pathways, shifts in the microbial community, and underlying granulation mechanisms were investigated. Following a two-month operation period, the transition from flocculent-activated sludge to well-defined AGS with distinct boundaries and compact structures was successfully achieved. The average size of sludge increased from 31.9 to 138.5 μm, with granules larger than 200 μm constituting 28.9 % of the total sludge and SVI30 averaging 51.4 ± 8.2 mL g-1. The 95th percentile effluent COD, NH4+-N, and TN concentrations were 35.0, 1.2, and 13.3 mg L-1, respectively. The primary pathways for pollutant removal were identified as simultaneous nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal within the microaerobic tanks. The enrichment of denitrifying phosphorus-accumulating organisms, including Hydrogenophaga, Accumulibacter, Azospira, Dechloromonas, and Pseudomonas, provides an essential microbial foundation. Furthermore, computational fluid dynamics modeling revealed that the incorporation of internal separators in aerobic tanks induced shifts in the flow pattern, transitioning from a single-circulation cell to multiple vortical cells. This alteration amplified the local velocity gradients, generating the required shear forces to drive granulation. Moreover, mass balance analysis revealed that the microaerobic and aerobic tanks operated under feast and famine conditions, respectively, creating a microbial selection pressure that favored granulation. This process eliminates the need for external clarifiers, resulting in a footprint reduction of 38.2 % and one-third energy savings for sludge reflux. This study offers valuable insights into the application of continuous-flow AGS to upgrade existing activated sludge systems with limited retrofitting requirements.

Abstract:Oxygen transfer is the essential function of bubble aeration and very important for aerobic biological treatment process.The effects of operational conditions and wastewater properties on oxygen transfer in microbubble aeration were investigated with a hydraulic gyratory shear type of microbubble generator.The results indicated that high gas holdup and retention time in aeration tank were obtained and surfactant SDS increased gas holdup and retention time further in microbubble aeration.The volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient increased and oxygen transfer efficiency decreased when air flow rate increased.The volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient and oxygen transfer efficiency in microbubble aeration were higher than these in traditional bubble aeration and more sensitive to the variation of air flow rate.When temperature increased,the volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient also increased in microbubble aeration,showing the same with traditional bubble aeration but a little more sensitive to the variation of temperature.Surfactant SDS only made the volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient decrease a little in microbubble aeration,showing weaker negative effect than that in traditional bubble.The volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient was also influenced by the salinity(NaCl concentration) which made the volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient increase to a constant gradually after NaCl concentration was larger than 5 000 mg/L.
