Abstract:Ferromagnetic domains can be detected by using the Kerr magneto-optic effect. The factors influencing the visibility of such domains on a microscopic scale are considered. An experiment is described which shows the dependence of the visibility on the numerical aperture of the condenser and the mean angle of incidence. The results are applied to the design of a magneto-optic microscope. The microscope performance is illustrated and resolution limitations indicated.

Abstract:A polarizing microscope is described, in which solid state samples can be cooled down to liquid-helium temperatures and can be observed with a resolution of the order of 1 μ. By means of this microscope and thin magneto-optical EuS/EuF2 films, the intermediate state in type-I-superconducting films of lead and tin could be resolved for the first time.

Abstract:Magnetic structure plays a pivotal role in the functionality of antiferromagnets (AFMs), which not only can be employed to encode digital data but also yields novel phenomena. Despite its growing significance, visualizing the antiferromagnetic domain structure remains a challenge, particularly for non-collinear AFMs. Currently, the observation of magnetic domains in non-collinear antiferromagnetic materials is feasible only in Mn$_{3}$Sn, underscoring the limitations of existing techniques that necessitate distinct methods for in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic domain imaging. In this study, we present a versatile method for imaging the antiferromagnetic domain structure in a series of non-collinear antiferromagnetic materials by utilizing the anomalous Ettingshausen effect (AEE), which resolves both the magnetic octupole moments parallel and perpendicular to the sample surface. Temperature modulation due to the AEE originating from different magnetic domains is measured by the lock-in thermography, revealing distinct behaviors of octupole domains in different antiferromagnets. This work delivers an efficient technique for the visualization of magnetic domains in non-collinear AFMs, which enables comprehensive study of the magnetization process at the microscopic level and paves the way for potential advancements in applications.

Abstract:A new type of magneto-optical (MO) Faraday rotation (FR) iron garnet bulk single-crystal with composition of ReYbBiIG (Re: Tb3+, Ho3+, etc.) was designed and grown by using Bi2O3/B2O3 as the main flux and the accelerated crucible rotation technique. Through the combining of two types of Bi3+-substituted rare-earth iron garnets with opposite signs of FR, temperature and wavelength coefficients, the MO properties can be much improved. A series of near-infrared (NIR) optical materials of ReYbBiIG with large MO figure of merit (>18°/dB), low saturation magnetic field (∼1.2×106 A/m), low NIR optical absorption (<6.58 cm−1), and very small FR temperature and wavelength coefficients at λ=1.55 μm were obtained, including Ho0.85Yb1.12Bi1.03Fe5O12 and Tb2.06Yb0.46Bi0.48Fe5O12, etc. Indications are that these newly designed and grown MO FR crystals are good candidates for temperature stabilized and wideband optical isolators employed in wavelength division multiplexing optical fiber communication systems.
A High-Resolution Combined Scanning Laser- and Widefield Polarizing Microscope for Imaging at Temperatures from 4 K to 300 K

Abstract:Polarized light microscopy, as a contrast-enhancing technique for optically anisotropic materials, is a method well suited for the investigation of a wide variety of effects in solid-state physics, as for example birefringence in crystals or the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). We present a microscopy setup that combines a widefield microscope and a confocal scanning laser microscope with polarization-sensitive detectors. By using a high numerical aperture objective, a spatial resolution of about 240 nm at a wavelength of 405 nm is achieved. The sample is mounted on a $^4$He continuous flow cryostat providing a temperature range between 4 K and 300 K, and electromagnets are used to apply magnetic fields of up to 800 mT with variable in-plane orientation and 20 mT with out-of-plane orientation. Typical applications of the polarizing microscope are the imaging of the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetization via the longitudinal and polar MOKE, imaging of magnetic flux structures in superconductors covered with a magneto-optical indicator film via Faraday effect or imaging of structural features, such as twin-walls in tetragonal SrTiO$_3$. The scanning laser microscope furthermore offers the possibility to gain local information on electric transport properties of a sample by detecting the beam-induced voltage change across a current-biased sample. This combination of magnetic, structural and electric imaging capabilities makes the microscope a viable tool for research in the fields of oxide electronics, spintronics, magnetism and superconductivity.

Abstract:The noncentrosymmetricity of a prototypical correlated electron system Ca3Ru2O7 renders extensive interest in the possible polar metallic state, along with multiple other closely competing interactions. However, the structural domain formation in this material often complicates the study of intrinsic material properties. It is crucial to fully characterize the structural domains for unrevealing underlying physics. Here, we report the domain imaging on Ca3Ru2O7 crystal using the reflection of polarized light at normal incidence. The reflection anisotropy measurement utilizes the relative orientation between electric field component of the incident polarized light and the principal axis of the crystal, and gives rise to a peculiar contrast. The domain walls are found to be the interfaces between 90° rotated twin crystals by complementary magnetization measurements. A distinct contrast in reflectance is also found in the opposite cleavage surfaces, owing to the polar mode of the RuO6 octahedra. More importantly, the analysis of the contrast between all inequivalent cleavage surfaces enables a direct determination of the crystallographic orientation of each domain. Such an approach provides an efficient yet feasible method for structural domain characterization, which can also find applications in noncentrosymmetric crystals in general.

Abstract:Recent demonstrations of electrical detection and manipulation of antiferromagnets (AFMs) have opened new opportunities towards robust and ultrafast spintronics devices. However, it is difficult to establish the connection between the spin-transport behavior and the microscopic AFM domain states due to the lack of the real-time AFM domain imaging technique under the electric field. Here we report a significant Voigt rotation up to 60 mdeg in thin NiO(001) films at room temperature. Such large Voigt rotation allows us to directly observe AFM domains in thin-film NiO by utilizing a wide-field optical microscope. Further complementary XMLD-PEEM measurement confirms that the Voigt contrast originates from the NiO AFM order. We examine the domain pattern evolution at a wide range of temperature and with the application of external magnetic field. Comparing to large-scale-facility techniques such as the X-ray photoemission electron microscopy, the use with a wide-field, tabletop optical imaging method enables straightforward access to domain configurations of single-layer AFMs.

Abstract:Magnetite has long been investigated across many disciplines due to the interplay between its ferroic order parameters, namely its ferrimagnetism, ferroelasticity and ferroelectricty. Despite this, the experimental difficulty in measuring low temperature real space images of the ferroelectric domains has meant that the local behaviour of ferroelectric domains emergent below the 38 K phase transition have yet to be realised. Abstract:Antiferromagnetic (AFM) domains in ultrathin CoO(001) films are imaged by a wide-field optical microscopy using magneto-optical birefringence effect. The magnetic origin of observed optical contrast is confirmed by the spin orientation manipulation through exchange coupling in Fe/CoO(001) bilayer. The finite size effect of ordering temperature for ultrathin single crystal CoO film is revealed by the thickness and temperature dependent measurement of birefringence contrast. The magneto-optical birefringence effect is found to strongly depend on the photon energy of incident light, and a surprising large polarization rotation angle up to 168.5 mdeg is obtained from a 4.6 nm CoO film with a blue light source, making it possible to further investigate the evolution of AFM domains in AFM ultrathin film under external field.

Abstract:Direct observation of ferroelectric domain structures in LiTaO3 crystal, without etching or surface coating, has been realized by using environmental scanning electron microscopy in secondary electron emission mode. The new method can nondestructively provide domain contrast image at submicron resolution, and the domain contrast image is very stable. Conditions for best domain contrast of LiTaO crystals have been established.

Abstract:When a Dirac quantum state interacts with an applied electric field the energy of the quantum state changes. It is generally assumed that there is a maximum limit on the amount of energy that can be extracted from a Dirac quantum state, due to its interaction with an electric field. In this article it is shown that this assumption is not correct and that, for a properly applied electric field, an arbitrarily large amount of energy can be extracted from the quantum state.

Abstract:The temperature-dependent behavior of magnetic domains plays an essential role in the magnetic properties of materials, leading to widespread applications. However, experimental methods to access the three-dimensional (3D) magnetic domain structures are very limited, especially for antiferromagnets. Over the past decades, the spin-orbit Mott insulator iridate $Sr_2IrO_4$ has attracted particular attention because of its interesting magnetic structure and analogy to superconducting cuprates. Here, we apply resonant x-ray magnetic Bragg coherent diffraction imaging to track the real-space 3D evolution of antiferromagnetic ordering inside a $Sr_2IrO_4$ single crystal as a function of temperature, finding that the antiferromagnetic domain shows anisotropic changes. The anisotropy of the domain shape reveals the underlying anisotropy of the antiferromagnetic coupling strength within $Sr_2IrO_4$. These results demonstrate the high potential significance of 3D domain imaging in magnetism research.

Abstract:In previous decades significant efforts have been devoted to increasing the magneto-optical efficiency of iron garnet materials for the miniaturization of nonreciprocal devices such as isolators and circulators. Elemental substitutions or proper nano-structuring to benefit from optical resonances have been pursued. However, all these approaches still require film thicknesses of at least several tens of microns to deliver useful device applications, and suffer from narrow bandwidths in the case of optical resonance effects. This Letter reports on a newly discovered enhancement of the Faraday Effect observed experimentally in nanoscale bismuth-substituted iron garnet films. It is shown here that this enhancement is not due to elemental substitution or compositional variations. Nor is it due to photon trapping or resonance effects. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical analysis of the Faraday rotation reveals a dramatic seven-fold amplification in the magneto-optic gyrotropy within only 2 nm of the air-surface interface, corresponding to just a couple of atomic monolayers as a result of symmetry-breaking at the air-film interface. This finding opens up an avenue to the application of monolayer magnetic garnets for the control of light.

Abstract:Ultrathin ferromagnetic films display a wealth of spectacular characteristics, one of which is that two-dimensional ferromagnetism is stabilized exclusively by magnetic anisotropies. In this work, we experimentally demonstrated the realization of ultrathin yttrium iron garnet (Y3Fe5O12) films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy by pulsed laser deposition. A labyrinthine magnetic domain configuration in Y3Fe5O12 was identified by magnetic force microscopy, qualitatively determining that the magnetic moment possesses an out-of-plane component. Magnetic moments in the Y3Fe5O12 film were investigated by using a vibrating sample magnetometer and magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. Due to the surface sensitivity, the characterization technique based on magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy presents as a high-resolution magneto-optical method to determine the magnetic property quantitatively, which has an advantage over the vibrating sample magnetometer technique commonly used for bulk crystals or powders, especially when the paramagnetic background from the supporting substrate is non-negligible. Our work introduces the burgeoning material synthesis and processing technology, and miscellaneous characterization techniques into the study of conventional magnetic oxide films, providing powerful supplements to the detection and modulation of magnetism at the nanoscale.

Direct observation of Néel-type skyrmions and domain walls in a ferrimagnetic DyCo$_3$ thin film

Abstract:Isolated magnetic skyrmions are stable, topologically protected spin textures that are at the forefront of research interests today due to their potential applications in information technology. A distinct class of skyrmion hosts are rare earth - transition metal (RE-TM) ferrimagnetic materials. To date, the nature and the control of basic traits of skyrmions in these materials are not fully understood. We show that for an archetypal ferrimagnetic material DyCo$_3$ that exhibits a strong perpendicular anisotropy, the ferrimagnetic skyrmion size can be tuned by an external magnetic field. Moreover, by taking advantage of the high spatial resolution of scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and utilizing a large x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) contrast that occurs naturally at the RE resonant edges, we resolve the nature of the magnetic domain walls of ferrimagnetic skyrmions. We demonstrate that through this method one can easily discriminate between Bloch and Néel type domain walls for each individual skyrmion. For all isolated ferrimagnetic skyrmions, we observe that the domain walls are of Néel-type. This key information is corroborated with results of micromagnetic simulations and allows us to conclude on the nature of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) which concurs to the stabilisation of skyrmions in this ferrimagnetic system. Establishing that an intrinsic DMI occurs in RE-TM materials will also be beneficial towards a deeper understanding of chiral spin texture control in ferrimagnetic materials.

Magnetic domains in ultrathin, bulk-like and proximity-coupled Europium Oxide

Abstract:The control of electron spins in materials that are simultaneously ferromagnetic and insulating opens up a wealth of quantum phenomena in spin-based electronics. Thin films of europium oxide (EuO) are ideal for the generation and manipulation of spin-polarized states, but so far there are no experimental literature reports on the magnetic domain patterns for EuO. However, at these microscopic length scales, magnetic relaxation between the remanent and demagnetized states takes place in any spintronic device. This relaxation process involves displacements of magnetic domain walls and can therefore be strongly influenced by the film structure and thickness. Here we present an investigation of the temperature-dependent behavior of magnetic domains and hysteresis in bulk-like (25 nm) and ultrathin (3 nm) EuO films. Magneto-optical Kerr microscopy is used, a technique that is a valuable tool to explore microscopic features such as spin dynamics and magnetic domain walls. Significant Kerr rotation in EuO led to high-contrast magnetic domain images in thick films, facilitating observation of domain dynamics. The critical temperature (TC) and coercivity shows strong thickness-dependent variations. The analysis and comparison of hysteresis loops and domain imaging in EuO and EuO/Co reveal proximity effect-induced antiferromagnetic coupling of both layers. To elucidate the magnetization reversal dynamics in EuO, micromagnetic simulations using MuMax3 were performed below and above TC. This comprehensive approach aims to comprehend the impact of magnetism and magnetic proximity effect in EuO on the micromagnetic scale, potentially extending its magnetic ordering beyond TC.
