Abstract:Abstract Geotourism is becoming a well established form of tourism based on the geological environment. It offers a new form of sustainable tourism which is more holistic then previous niche forms of tourism. However, with more people than ever visiting natural areas worldwide, the cumulative impacts of visitors on geological sites is increasing. This paper surveys visitor impacts and site management at geological sites which are geotourism destinations. We describe geotourism which is the engine driving the core activities of conservation, education and sustainable development in geoparks. We then outline some lessons learned from management in dealing with visitor impacts at a heavily visited geopark in Taiwan, a volcano in Indonesia, and a coastal World Heritage site in England. The importance of education is emphasized for geo-climbing in Spain and all-terrain vehicles in Poland. A number of site management approaches are noted, including the importance of guiding as a management strategy as well as the value of a positive involvement by the local community. Finally, some examples are given of the risks associated with tourism activities in volcanic areas as well as related appropriate management activities.

Abstract:Landscape ecology, resulted from the integration of modern Geography and Ecology, is discovering and broadening its application scope. Its application to ecotourism is now underway. On the basis of three kinds of definitions on ecotourism, this paper defines ecotourism from tourism planners and managers, tourists, and their integrated levels. We also emphasize its spatial and ecological meaning, and initially discover the application of landscape ecology to ecotourism. Landscape ecologic theory including structure and function, ecological holism and spatial heterogeneity, diversity and stability, and landscape change, can be one of the theoretical foundations of ecotourism planning and management.

Abstract:Tourism geography is increasingly to be one of geography branch disciplines.However,with the background of "culture turn" and "social turn" in human geography research,tourism geography is criticized for losing "the flavor of geography",or "degeographization tendency","forgetting the hometown on the way rushing to alien land".With these concerns,The Tourism Geographies Commission of China Geography Association organizes a seminar to reflect the tourism geographies research in the past decades,to discuss the academic contribution of tourism geography,the characteristics and the generational transition of tourism geography.The conclusions include:(1) Tourism geographies is not far away from home,but the hometown:geography itself is changing.Tourism geography must adapt to the geography development in the new era;(2) The key characteristics of tourism geography are comprehensive and inclusive.We should persist in not only logical positivism,but also constructionism and humanism paradigm.The key research questions include mobility,spatial scale transfer and human-place relation;(3) Generation transition in tourism geographers is inevitable,not only in the way of teacher-student relation transition,but also research question,disciplinary identification and theoretical shift.Tourism geography should have their own series of research questions,and generations of geographers work together to facilitate the academic community.

Abstract:Geodiversity and geosystem services are confronting global threats. However, the majority of conservation strategies tend to overlook the geological component within ecosystems. The existing literature centres on biodiversity, ecosystem services and their economic valuation. In this paper, we conduct a systematic literature review to identify the gap in the assessment of geological diversity, pinpointing areas where scientific contributions are needed to safeguard geological resources. Our findings reveal a concentration of studies assessing geodiversity in European and Asian countries. While the majority of the reviewed papers emphasizes the recreational features and associated values of geological resources, promoting geotourism and recognizing its potential for economic growth, there is a significant oversight concerning the impact of tourism on geological resources. Existing assessments predominantly focus on visitors' perceptions and preferences, sidelining the inhabitants’ perspective and their crucial roles in the conservation of geodiversity. Abstract:This article explores the imprint on tourist landscapes of enworldment, unworldment, deworldment and transworldment processes of a newly-emerging cultural reorganization of space, in order to contribute towards tourist landscape theory, negotiated here in terms of landscape attraction, seduction and desire. Tourist landscapes become by nature and by function eloquent geographical media and expressions of this new global cultural economy of space , by hosting, promoting and exhibiting new types of spatial experiences that are increasingly more fluid, complex, surreal and a-geographical than in the past. The article begins to negotiate the ways and processes whereby such experiences are substantiated in terms of landscape seduction and the desire to travel, and constructed through complex bodily/sensual, emotional and cognitive interrelationships between the tourist and the visited landscape.

Abstract:This article introduces a theme collection of geographical authored contributions on tourism in Southern Africa to reinforce the position of South Africa's premier geographical serial as an important publishing outlet for research in tourism studies as a whole and for tourism geographical works in particular. The group of papers addresses a diverse set of themes around greening and tourism, business tourism, Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) travel, second homes tourism and tourism development issues. Two sections of material are offered. First, a brief context is provided of directions in international tourism geography. Second, a review is offered on the directions and contributions which have been made by geographers to tourism studies in South Africa. In particular, the starting point is the benchmark paper which appeared in 2002 in this journal by Magi and Nzama [2002. Perspectives on recreation and tourism geographies in South Africa, South African Geographical Journal, 84, 67–76] outlining the relative novelty of tourism geography research in Southern Africa as well as its possibilities for future development. With the publication of over 100 articles by local tourism geographers, a decade later this paper reflects on the growing maturity of South African tourism geography scholarship.

Abstract:Travel and tourism has become one of the largest industrial complexes and item of consumption in modern Western economies. It is argued here that, to date, geographers studying tourism have done so without fully grasping the fact that tourism is an important avenue of capitalist accumulation. I contend that if this weakness is rectified the geographic analysis of tourism could provide important contributions to contemporary debates in geography. In an attempt to integrate critical theory and political economy into the study of tourism, two themes are developed: the capitalistic nature of most travel and tourism production and consumption; and the contribution of tourism to the analysis of territorial competition and economic restructuring. The core of the argument presented is that the study of tourism assists us to recognise how the social meaning and materiality of space and place is created, and how these representations of place are explicitly incorporated into the accumulation process. To understand how tourism is involved in this, we need a thcorisation that recognises, and unveils, tourism as a capitalistically organised activity driven by the inherent and defining social dynamics of that system, with its attendant production, social, and ideological relations.

Abstract:This study aims to explore the geotourism experience by undertaking a qualitative inquiry of the narratives of geotourists to Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines. This study proposes that the geotourism experience is created onsite through the tourists’ visual, performative and social aspects of gazing and produced in the tourists’ minds through their perception, imagination and self-reflection. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 12 purposefully selected geotourists. Thematic analysis procedures reveal 11 experiential themes that illustrate varying perspectives on the geotourism experience, categorised into three dimensions: ‘natural’, ‘recreational’ and ‘socio-cultural’. The findings indicate that apart from the expected leisure, hedonic and adventurous experiences, deeper outcomes such as a sense of awe, personal reflections and spiritual outcomes are apparent in the geotourism experience, as a result of individuals’ negotiations with Mount Pinatubo’s natural landscape and touristic environment. More meaningful and transformative experiences are also discovered from geotourists’ engagement with the landform’s cultural landscape, particularly from their social interaction with the indigenous people who live at Mount Pinatubo. These outcomes suggest the gaining of a holistic view of the Earth and its inhabitants through geotourism. This article thus provides some understanding of the experiential aspects of geotourism.

Abstract:Based on a large number of domestic literature reviews with related research abroad, academic standards and issues awareness have been intensified in domestic tourism geography, disciplinary consciousness and innovation enhancement. Hence, some valuable achievements have been made in the areas of tourism resources, tourism regional system, the spatial structure of tourism, tourism flow, ecotourism, tourism industry, tourism planning and tourism impacts, which strengthened the traditional advantages of research, expanded new areas of research and made research trends diverse. Meanwhile, with innovation of research methods, tourism geography in China is getting more and more internationally-oriented and reflecting Chinese characteristics. Research trends of China’s tourism geography are prospected: 1) Catering to national strategic needs, persisting problem-oriented, strengthening the metatheoretical research, and building Chinese “localization” of theory of tourism geography and method system. 2) Introducing and assimilating foreign theories and research methods, while focusing on explaining new tourism phenomena and problems in the domestic socio-economic background. 3) Concerning about the new regional spatial processes of demographic process, social process, and spatial process in new tourism trend. 4) Exploring interactive process and mechanism of man-land relationship and new models to develop territorial space under the tourism impacts. 5) Exploring important research issues of tourism geography in global, national, regional and local scales, from the point of view of spatial differentiation, scale transformation, interaction of man and nature, creating tourism geography interpretation system based on “process-structure-mechanism” of China. 6) Building theoretical system actively, while strengthening application-oriented research, and focusing on tourism poverty alleviation, tourism and heritage protection, national parks’ construction and other hot issues. Faced with econometrics research boom, we should return to rational thinking, using big data scientifically, while paying attention to the important role of qualitative evaluation in future research.

Progress on Tourism Geomorphology Research in China and Its Disciplinary Structure

Abstract:As an attraction,geomorphological resources have lured a variety of tourists in the last decades.The practice calls for research on geomorphology from the perspective of tourism.Followed the 1st Conference of Tourism Development on Danxia Geomorphological Resources(DGR) in China was the establishment of the Society of Tourism Development on DGR in 1991,which is a milestone that a new,practical sub-discipline of geomorphology,i.e.,tourism geomorphology, has formed.Since then,more and more papers have appeared on this domain.This paper makes a critical review on the progress of research on tourism geomorphology.The subjects of its research can be roughly divided into four types:resource research(RR),typology,regional research(ReR)and multi-disciplinary research(MR).RR includes definition,investigation,classification,evaluation,development,planning,management and protection of the tourism geomorphological resources(TGD).The typology of tourism geomorphology is made up of the research on petrosal tourism landforms (PTL) and external-force tourism landforms(ETL).The authors make a review on the four types of PTL research respectively,such as Danxia Landform,Karst Landform,Zhangjiajie Landform,and Zhangshiyan Landform.A brief review is also given to the progress on research of ETL,which is comprised of Glacier Landform,Dune Landform,Coast landform,Landslide Landform,and so on.More emphases of ReR have been given to research on regional tourism geomorphology with the regional development of TGD.Almost at the same period,theories and methodologies of other fields have been employed to cross-examine the multi-disciplinary complication of tourism geomorphology,which is the result from both the diversification of demand for tourism geomorphological attraction and the sustainable management of TGD.At last,the paper makes an attempt to discuss the disciplinary structure of tourism geomorphology in China.
Georiddles, brainstorming and creativity in natural and cultural tourism

Abstract:Many tourists don’t want to spend their holidays only at the beach and others arrive to their destination for cultural or natural reasons. Some are attracted by creative activities. An upcoming touristic branch which joins cultural and natural tourism is Geotourism. A “georiddle” may increase the visitor’s interest in geological and cultural themes and challenge his creativity. The following methodology is adopted to reach these objectives: The guide gives basic information in a geologically interesting site and asks the participants about details of what can be seen. By brainstorming and discussion, they may solve the problem or not; in any case the participants are encouraged to foster their creativity by interactive processes. Then, the guide explains his opinion about the solution of the “georiddle”, and the discussion can begin again. Enigmatic structures may be found in construction stones of built heritage, as well as in geological outcrops in the countryside. A “georiddle” can be posed in other fields, like vernacular cultural heritage. For instance, drystone constructions are interfaces between geological and cultural heritage. Here, the riddle’s aim may be to discuss about the reason of their spatial arrangement and purpose. As a result, it is expected to awaken the visitor’s curiosity and creativity and to increase and broaden his field of knowledge.

Abstract:Tourism geography is a significant contributor to the study of tourism, yet is generally perceived as marginal to geography. The review frames contemporary tourism geography by examining it in the context of geographical knowledge processes, changes to the environment within which it is situated, issues of marginality, and the ongoing significance of major binaries in geographic thought including physical/human geography and applied/theoretical geography. These frames are relevant to the wider domain of tourism studies as well. Although noting the dangers of invented disciplinary traditions and heritage as a result of the writing of reflective reviews and texts, the article argues that tourism geography has been a significant contributor to the bringing together and hybridity of geographic binaries, especially in the development of more critical applied geographies of environmental change.

Abstract:This systematic review offers a comprehensive analysis of the current state of knowledge regarding tourism in European traditional multifunctional cultural landscapes (TMCLs) from a landscape perspective. Adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines, this study aims to identify the principal contextual themes, geographical patterns, and drivers of change in TMCL tourism research from a theoretical landscape perspective. The outcomes of this systematic review revealed that the study of tourism in European TMCLs is still in its early stages, characterized by a scarcity of studies and a limited representation of countries within the existing literature. The analyzed papers underscore a restricted focus on local stakeholder preferences and carrying capacity, with only one study acknowledging the concept of landscape services. Conversely, government initiatives and local community engagement emerge as the most influential drivers of change in the tourism sector. In view of these findings, this study accentuates the significance of embracing a holistic approach to tourism that integrates living systems thinking and regenerative tourism as key priorities. Consequently, the study suggests that future research prioritize investigating local stakeholder preferences, carrying capacity, and other contextual variables to overcome the current limitations of the literature and shape tourism towards a more resilient and sustainable future. The results of this systematic review provide valuable insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers in the field of tourism in TMCLs. Additionally, they serve as a foundational basis for future research endeavors in this domain.

Abstract:Conflicts between human and environmental systems become more obvious with the rapid development of the tourism industry.Aiming to clarify the complex relationship among human-environment interactions,a conceptual framework for tourism landscape ecosystems is proposed based on theories of Landscape Ecology.The ultimate goal of this paper is to provide a theoretical foundation for the study of sustainable tourism sites.The tourism landscape ecosystem is a regional integrated system,which consists of tourists,residents, and their circumjacent environment.The system is formed under a complex set of rules,ecological,economic and social rules included.Scale,pattern,function,and transformation processes of the tourism landscape ecosystem are the basic scientific issues under the framework.This article advances the following propositions.First,elements of the tourism landscape ecosystem and their relationships are distinct at different scales.Second,characteristics of tourism landscape ecosystem patterns can be demonstrated from two aspects,landscape patterns and tourist flow structure.The latter is the main landscape process that distinguishes tourism landscape ecosystems from other complex systems.Third,the functions of the tourism landscape ecosystem consist of ecological functions and tourism functions,two functions interact and sustain one other.Fourth,varying functional elements will lead to changes in the tourism landscape ecosystem.From this point of view,identifying driver variables and interaction mechanisms between and among patterns and functions of the tourism landscape ecosystem is critical.Only based on the above analyses can we ameliorate deteriorating systems,develop feasible approaches to terminate the deterioration,and optimize the integrity of the ecosystem.Finally,characteristics of tourism landscape ecosystem posed as follow are then discussed and conclusions are drawn: ①Pattern-function dependence,which impacts changes of the whole ecosystem;②Frangibility of the tourism landscape ecosystem,due to the instability of natural environment and the high association of tourism industries.

Abstract:This article undertakes a comprehensive review of tourism's impacts on social-ecological systems and the use of the local to global commons. It examines a wide range of issues from climate change and air travel to biodiversity loss, pollution, and overtourism. It reinforces that tourism in modernity has pursued a dominant growth-driven paradigm of development and market expansion that is unsustainable. The review raises critical questions about how to move forward in the Anthropocene, where climate change is an existential threat to which travel and tourism must adjust. We offer directions for knowledge creation to develop nature-positive tourism that decouples from greenhouse gas emissions and seeks the regeneration of natural capital and communal health and well-being. This direction includes rethinking the purposes and values of tourism by addressing equity and ethical issues. It also calls for inclusivity of diverse worldviews and knowledge systems, including traditional and Indigenous knowledge. Such a pluralistic paradigm replaces the unsustainable modernist tourism paradigm that has dominated its evolution. We conclude with suggestions for research to advance nature-positive tourism.

Abstract:The development of tourism industry and the in-burst of masses of tourists will have broad and deep impact on the local landscape of tourist destinations. The meaning of landscape and its relationship with tourism are explained in this paper. From the point of view of both nature landscape and human landscape, both positive and negative impacts of tourism development on landscapes of the destinations are discussed. On the whole, the positive impacts are that tourism can improve people's protecting consciousness on landscape and provide financing, while the negative impacts are that it will increase the pressure of environment and push the characteristic to disappear. At the end of the paper, a principle is brought up, which is that the development of tourism industry and the protection of local landscapes should be balanced.
