Abstract:A series of ethylene carbonate grafted polysilane with different substitutions are synthesized and used as novel electrolyte additives to improve high-temperature performance of lithium-ion batteries. The relationship between Si–H substitution of polysilane and electrochemical performances is studied by cyclic voltammetry and charge–discharge cycling tests. Surface analysis on the cycled positive electrode is carried out by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and then, two possible protection mechanisms of ethylene carbonate grafted polysilane are presented. Results show that cycling performance at elevated temperature (60 °C) could be significantly improved by adding a tiny amount (0.5 wt %) of grafting polysilane additives which could be exhausted and removed from electrolyte at the end of the film-forming process on the positive electrode. When ethyl ethylene carbonate grafting polysilane has a low substitution, below 10%, oxidation cross-linking of the silicon hydrogen bond becomes the main film-formation mechanism, which has a significant negative effect on rate performance; however, grafting polysilane with high substitution above 61% forms a layer on the positive electrode, mainly by oxidative polymerization in carbonate substituents. When highly substituted polysilane is selected as a high-temperature additive of the carbonate-based electrolyte with the addition of 0.5 wt %, the lithium cobalt oxide positive electrode could show both an outstanding cycling stability and a high-rate performance.
