Abstract:This article provides a novel method for introducing zwitterionic polymers into nanofiltration membranes, with the aim of achieving high water flux and good anti-fouling performance. Terpolymers P(DMC-HEA-DMAPS) (PDHD) composed of 2-methacryloyloxy ethyl trimethylammonium chloride (DMC), 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and 3-dimethyl(methacryloyloxyethyl) ammonium propane sulfonate (DMAPS) were synthesized via aqueous phase free-radical copolymerization. Composite nanofiltration membranes (CNFMs) were prepared with PDHD and glutaraldehyde (GA) via the combination of surface coating and chemical cross-linking methods. Chemical structures and compositions of PDHDs and CNFMs were characterized by (attenuated total reflectance) Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The water permeability of CNFMs was examined with nanofiltration test and dynamic water contact angle measurement. Optimum nanofiltration performance was obtained for CNFM3 with 4.35mol% DMAPS, e.g. RMgCl2=96.5%, JMgCl2=47.8 L m−2 h−1 (testing with 1gL−1 aqueous MgCl2 solution at 25°C and 0.6MPa). Moreover, the extent of fouling for CNFM3 was significantly reduced and most of the fouling was reversible during the MgCl2 and protein filtration test. Therefore, the water permeability and anti-fouling property of CNFMs were significantly improved with introducing zwitterionic groups into the membranes.
Improving the Performance of Polyamide Reverse Osmosis Membrane by Incorporation of Modified Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Polyamide reverse osmosis membranes incorporating carboxy-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were prepared by interfacial polymerization of metaphenylene diamine and trimesoyl chloride. The pristine MWNTs were pre-treated with mixed acids before being modified with diisobutyryl peroxide to enhance their dispersity and chemical activity. The prepared nanocomposite membranes had a 100–300nm skin layer and the modified MWNTs were embedded within the skin layer, which was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The surface of the nanocomposite membrane was shown to be more negatively charged than bare polyamide membrane. It was shown that with an increase in the carbon nanotube loading in the membrane, the membrane morphology changed distinctly, leading to a significantly improved flux without sacrificing the solute rejection. Meanwhile, the nanocomposite membranes showed better antifouling and antioxidative properties than MWNT-free polyamide membranes, suggesting that the incorporation of modified MWNTs in membranes is effective for improving the membrane performance.
Impact of Graphitic Carbon Nitride/polydopamine on Permeance and Antifouling Performance of Reverse Osmosis Membranes

Abstract:Nanotechnology advancements have significantly contributed to the development of thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) reverse osmosis membranes for addressing global water scarcity through more efficient separation and purification processes. However, the impact of nanomaterials on membrane preparation, structure, and performance remains insufficiently understood. In this study, graphitic carbon nitride/polydopamine (g-C3N4/PDA) incorporated TFN membrane was proposed and systematically investigated through experimental methods and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The incorporation of g-C3N4/PDA increased the resistance to MPD diffusion during the interfacial polymerization process, the obtained TFN membrane displayed a thinner, smoother active layer and enhanced hydrophilicity. Therefore, the membrane exhibited a remarkable water flux of 53.43 L·m−2·h−1, triple that of the conventional membrane, with a NaCl rejection of 98.9 %. Meanwhile, the TFN membrane displayed excellent antifouling properties against both organic, inorganic and mixed foulants, maintaining a high flux recovery rate during long-term operation. MD simulation further revealed the stable interaction between g-C3N4/PDA nanocomposites and the polyamide matrix, enhancing structural compatibility and improving membrane performance. This study provides insights into the role of nanomaterials in the active layer of the membrane, offering both theoretical and practical guidance for the design of advanced TFN membranes with enhanced water permeance and antifouling performance.

Abstract:The anaerobic membrane bioreactor has great potentials to treat the wastewater with high organic matter due to the efficient anaerobic digestion process and high biomass retention. However, the existence of membrane fouling significantly increases the maintenance cost, and always requires frequent and complex cleaning process to recover the membrane performance. Thus, it is significant to fabricate a membrane with excellent anti-fouling performance for the application in membrane bioreactors. Herein, we prepared the CNTs-PVDF hollow fiber membrane with fouling resistance via loading the conductive CNTs coating on the surface of commercial PVDF membrane by a simple cross-linking reaction with hydrophilic polyvinyl alcohol and succinic acid. "Dual defense" was constructed by the combination of the hydrophilic surface and conductive CNTs coating, which lifted the anti-fouling performance of this membrane. In the assistance of electrical effect, the permeance of the membrane with −1.2 V bias could be recovered to 95 % of original state by simple hydraulic cleaning, while that of the membrane without bias was only 58 % after filtrating the sludge of 2000 mg/L. Furthermore, this membrane also exhibited the superior stability and fouling resistance in the operation of anaerobic electrochemical membrane bioreactor, which was promising for the advanced water treatment.

Abstract:Electrically conductive membrane possesses a remarkable performance in antifouling with the assistance of applied external electric fields. However, its widespread application is hampered due to the poor properties of existing conductive membranes, such as low conductivity and inadequate strength. The present study demonstrates a novel in-situ combination approach for the fabrication of a highly conductive carbon nanotube (CNT)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. During membrane fabrication, the casting solution film was pre-mantled with a CNT layer before the occurrence of polymer precipitation, thereby ensuring a natural and tight in-situ mergence between the CNT layer and supporting PVDF. The obtained CNT/PVDF membrane was characterized in terms of physicochemical properties and filtration performance. An electrically-enhanced cross-flow filtration system was devised to evaluate the antifouling performance of the pristine PVDF and CNT/PVDF membranes. Compared with the pristine PVDF membrane, the CNT/PVDF membrane possesses a greater electrical conductivity and a higher permeability. The incorporation of the CNT layer led to a completely different surface composition in terms of elemental components and functional groups. Being used as a cathode, the CNT/PVDF membrane exhibited a remarkable antifouling performance in the presence of external electric fields, and performed better in a 0V/2V-pulsed mode as compared with a 2V-constant mode. This in-situ combination method provides a simple and practical approach for the fabrication of composite conductive membranes, suggesting promising applications in various membrane-fabrication areas.

Abstract:The hydrophobicity of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane in nature can result in permeability decline and critical membrane fouling, limiting its further development and application in the field of purification and separation. Novel composite PVDF ultrafiltration membranes containing 0.1-0.6 wt.% of synthesized hydrothermal carbon nanospheres (CNS) were prepared with phase inversion method. The CNS had the mean diameter between 170-177 nm and the reactive oxygen functionalities such as hydroxyl, carbonyl, and carboxylic groups on outer carbon surface. The various characterizations revealed that the amount of CNS had a significant effect on composite membrane properties. The membrane of PVDF-2 exhibited the superior properties because of its lowest surface roughness and highest hydrophilicity, thermal stability, surface energy, porosity and mean pore size. Evaluations by pure water flux, bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection and antifouling performance test further demonstrated the enhancement of membrane performance properties by the introduction of CNS into PVDF. The highest pure water flux, BSA rejection and flux recovery ratio (FRR) were achieved with the composite membrane blended with an amount of 0.2 wt.% CNS (PVDF-2), reaching 956.72 L·m-2·h-1, 95.8% and 83.21% respectively. The overall improved permeability and antifouling performance suggested a great potential application of carbonaceous spheres being used in composite PVDF membrane fabrication.

Abstract:Based on carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH), a MWCNTs/PVDF conductive membrane was prepared by a vacuum filtration cross-linking method. The surface compositions and morphology of conductive membranes were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The effects of cross-linked polymeric polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on the conductive membrane properties such as the porosity, pore size distribution, pure water flux, conductivity, hydrophilicity, stability and antifouling properties were investigated. Results showed that the addition of PVA to the MWCNTs/PVDF conductive membrane decreased the pure water flux, porosity and the conductivity. However, the hydrophilicity of the modified MWCNTs/PVDF conductive membrane was greatly improved, and the contact angle of pure water was reduced from 70.18° to 25.48° with the addition of PVA contents from 0 wt% to 0.05 wt%. Meanwhile, the conductive membranes with higher content had a relatively higher stability. It was found that the conductive functional layer of the conductive membrane had an average mass loss rate of 1.22% in the 30 min ultrasonic oscillation experiment. The tensile intensity and break elongation ratio of the conductive membrane are improved by the addition of PVA, and the durability of the conductive membrane with PVA was superior to that without PVA added. The electric assisted anti-fouling experiments of modified conductive membrane indicated that compared with the condition without electric field, the average flux attenuation of the conductive membrane was reduced by 11.2%, and the membrane flux recovery rate reached 97.05%. Moreover, the addition of PVA could accelerate the clean of the conductive membranes.

Abstract:The removal of dye and toxic ionic pollutants from water is an extremely important issue. A simple filtration process to decontaminate water by employing a free-standing fibrous membrane fabricated from highly uniform carbonaceous nanofibers (CNFs) is demonstrated. This process combines the excellent adsorption behavior of CNFs and the advantages of membrane filtration over conventional adsorption techniques, which include simple scale-up, reduced time, and lower energy consumption. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the CNFs exhibited larger adsorption capacities than commercial granular active carbon (GAC) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) because of their large surface area, high uniformity, and numerous active sites on the surface of nanofibers. Membrane filtration experiments proved that the CNF membranes could remove methylene blue (MB) efficiently at a very high flux of 1580 L m(-2) h(-1), which is 10-100 times higher than that of commercial nano-or ultrafiltration membranes with similar rejection properties. The high permeability of CNF membrane permits stacking of membranes to improve adsorption capacity. In addition, the CNF membranes are easily regenerated and remain unaltered in adsorption performance over six successive cycles of dye adsorption, desorption, and washing. Given the high adsorption and regenerability performance of the CNF membrane, it should have potential applications in water purification.
Modification of regenerated cellulose ultrafiltration membranes with multi-walled carbon nanotubes for enhanced antifouling ability: Field test and mechanism study

Abstract:Although ultrafiltration (UF) has been extensively employed for drinking water purification, it is crucial to further develop novel membrane materials to improve the antifouling capacity and satisfy the practical usage. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have characteristics that could potentially improve the membrane antifouling performance. Therefore, in this study, modified cellulose UF membranes were prepared using MWCNTs of various outer diameters ranging from 10 to 20 nm to 40–60 nm. The antifouling properties of the modified membrane and natural organic matter (NOM) removal mechanism were investigated while treating water from a local drinking water source river. Overall, the antifouling ability increased by more than one-fold when the nascent cellulose membrane was coated with MWCNTs (outer diameter of 40–60 nm) at a loading of 17.4 g/m2. The molecular weight distribution profiles of the NOM in the raw water and permeates suggest the superior performance of the modified membranes in removing two major NOM fractions with molecular weights ranging from approximately 5 k–30 k and 500 k–1000 k. Based on its hydrophobicity, the NOM of the raw water was fractionated into the strong hydrophobic (SHPO), the weak hydrophobic, the strong hydrophilic and the moderately hydrophilic (MHPI) fractions. The WHPO fraction caused the highest fouling compared with the other fractions under consistent experimental conditions. Meanwhile, the modified membranes showed a preference for removing the MHPI and SHPO fractions. These results imply that MWCNTs can be employed to improve the antifouling property of cellulose UF membranes and have the potential to selectively remove moderately hydrophilic contaminants from water.

Preparation and antifouling performance of low-pressure carbon nanotube membranes based on polydopamine biomimetic modification

Abstract:In order to investigate the antifouling performance of low-pressure carbon nanotube membranes based on polydopamine (PDA) biomimetic modification, layered multi-walled carbon nanotubes PDA membrane (layered MWCNTs-PDA) and PDA blended MWCNTs membrane (blended PDA/MWCNTs) were prepared. The MWCNTs membranes' antifouling performance and recoverability was significantly improved in filtrating BSA, HA and SA after PDA biomimetic modification, and the total fouling and irreversible fouling were all decreased. Compared with the blended PDA/MWCNTs membrane, the layered MWCNTs-PDA membrane had higher antifouling property as it further improved the electronegativity and hydrophilicity of membrane surface. In addition, denser surface pore size of the layered MWCNTs-PDA membrane can effectively reduce the fouling by trapping foulants on its surface. The combination of PDA biomimetic modification with MWCNTs membrane had a superior antifouling performance and rejection performance in processing NOM and artificial wastewater, and the majority of humic-like foulants could be excluded by the layered MWCNTs-PDA membrane. PDA biomimetic modification alleviated the adhesion of FITC-BSA on the MWCNTs membrane. The layered MWCNTs-PDA membrane especially alleviated the attachment of bacteria and processed excellent antimicrobial ability for bacteria.

Abstract:To enhance the water flux of reverse osmosis membranes, thin film nanocomposite reverse osmosis membranes are prepared by incorporating functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). The functionalized MWNTs are obtained by the treatment of pristine MWNTs with the mixed acid of H(2)SO(4) and HNO(3) (3: 1 v/v). The MWNTs are analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). The surface morphology and structure of membrane are characterized by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and contact angle measurement, respectively. Those results show that modified MWNTs yielded some hydrophilic groups, such as -COOH and -OH, which make acidified MWNTs disperse more evenly in the aqueous solution. The SEM and TEM results demonstrate that the functionalized MWNTs penetrated through the polyamide layer, and might play the role of water channel. Compared with the bare polyamide membrane, the MWNT-polyamide thin film nanocomposite membranes have more hydrophilic surface, and the water flux of MWNT-polyamide membranes improve dramatically. For 2000 ppm NaCl, the water permeability increases from 26 l/m(2)h without MWNTs to 71 l/m(2)h at the acidified MWNTs loading of 0.1% (w/v), while NaCl rejection of MWNT-polyamide membranes decreases obviously compared to bare polyamide membrane. However, for 200 ppm purified terephthalic acid (PTA) solution, the pure water flux increases from 19 l/m(2)h up to 49 l/m(2)h, while PTA rejection is all higher than 98%. The experimental results reveal that the modified MWNTs well dispersed in the polyamide thin film layer, and hence improve the water permeation.

Abstract:Membrane fouling is an urgent problem needing to be solved for practical application of nanofiltration membranes. In this study, an amphiphilic nanofiltration membrane with hydrophilic domains as well as low surface energy domains was developed, to integrate a fouling-resistant defense mechanism and a fouling-release defense mechanism. A simple and effective two-step surface modification of a polyamide NF membrane was applied. Firstly, triethanolamine (TEOA) with abundant hydrophilic functional groups was grafted to the membrane surface via reacting with the residual acyl chloride group of the nanofiltration membrane, making the nanofiltration membranes more hydrophilic; secondly, the 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (PFTS), well-known as a low surface energy material, was covalently grafted on the hydroxyl functional groups through hydrogen bonding. Filtration experiments with model foulants (bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein solution, humic acid solution (HA) and sodium alginate solution (SA)) were performed to estimate the antifouling properties of the newly developed nanofiltration membranes. As a result of surface modification proposed in this study the antifouling properties of an amphiphilic modified F-PA/PSF membrane were enhanced more than 10% compared to the PA/PSF specimen in terms of flux recovery ratio.
Fabrication of PVDF membrane loaded with ultra-thin g-C 3 N 4 /FeOCl nanomaterials and study on catalytic and antifouling properties

Abstract:Membrane separation technology has been widely used in the field of water treatment because of its excellent performance, but the inevitable membrane fouling increases the cost of use. Therefore, in this study, ultra-thin g-C 3 N 4 /FeOCl was loaded on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane by vacuum-assisted suction filtration for the first time to fabricate photo-Fenton catalytically modified membranes to improve their antifouling performance. The experimental results showed that ultra-thin g-C 3 N 4 /FeOCl adhered well to the membrane surface, increasing the modified membrane's hydrophilicity. In addition, we found that the modified membrane achieved a maximum removal rate of 90% of the fouling. The flux recovery ratio (FRR) increased from 40% to 80% of the original membrane, indicating a significant increase in the membrane's antifouling properties. After 5 cycles, the membrane flux and pollutant removal rate were reduced by only 8%, indicating that the good stability and reusability of the modified membranes. It was experimentally verified that the active species that play a major role in the degradation of pollutants by the modified membranes are •OH and •O 2 – ,the concentration of •OH can reach 5.5 × 10 -6 mol/L in 45 min in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and light. In this study, a new modified membrane with good cycling performance is proposed, which provides new insights and ideas for the research of catalytic separation membrane technology.

Abstract:Membrane fouling can be effectively addressed by modifying the membrane to realize anti-fouling capability together with real-time fouling detection. Here, we present the synthesis and water treatment testing of a promising candidate for this application, a composite membrane of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and functionalized carbon nano-materials prepared by a facile phase inversion method. The synergistic effect of oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (OMWCNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) enabled better surface pore structures, higher surface roughness, hydrophilicity, and better antifouling property as compared with that of pristine PVDF membranes. The PVDF/OMWCNT/GO mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) achieved a high water flux of 125.6 Lm(-2)h(-1 )with high pollutant rejection rate, and their electrical conductivity of 2.11 x 10(-4) Scm(-1) at 100 kHz was sensitive to the amount of pollutant uptake. By using hybrid MMMs, we demonstrate simultaneous pollutant filtering and uptake monitoring, which is an important step in revolutionizing the water treatment industry.

Improving ultrafiltration membrane performance with pre-deposited carbon nanotubes/nanofibers layers for drinking water treatment

Abstract:To efficiently improve the performance of ultrafiltration (UF) membrane for drinking water treatment, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were utilized as pre-deposited coating layers on membrane surface. A comparative study between these two carbon nanomaterials for enhancing pollutants removal and mitigating membrane fouling induced by natural organic matter (NOM) was carried out. The surface morphologies were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and the results indicated that the CNTs coating layer was more dense and homogeneous with a smaller pore size than that of CNFs. The removal and antifouling performance of CNTs/CNFs coated membranes were investigated with typical NOM, i.e., humic acid, bovine serum albumin, sodium alginate, as well as natural surface water. The results showed that the presence of coating layers was very effective to improve the rejection rate of NOM, among which CNTs exhibited significant better performance than CNFs. The fouling control performance was influenced by the NOM fraction and coating mass (6–50 g/m2). Generally, CNTs coating layer was more efficient in alleviating both reversible and irreversible membrane fouling, while CNFs exhibited limited effect on irreversible fouling control. Both pre-adsorption and size exclusion contributed to the rejection of membrane foulants, thus reducing the organics directly contacted with the underlying membrane. In natural surface water treatment, the pre-deposited coating layers significantly delayed the transition of fouling mechanisms from pore blocking to cake filtration. The experimental results were expected to illustrate the feasibility of pre-deposited CNTs/CNFs layers for enhancing membrane performance during drinking water treatment.

Abstract:Despite membrane separation technology has been extensively implemented in various field, the fouling caused by bacterial and organic dye seriously impair the performance and lifespan of the membrane, the anti-fouling modification of the membrane is still a challenging. In this work, the antibacterial and self-cleaning poly (vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (PVDF-CTFE) mixed matrix membranes were prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation method using self-made graphite carbon nitride nanosheet wrapped copper phosphide (CuxP@g-C3N4) as modification additive. The sequel of the incorporated CuxP@g-C3N4 nanosheet content on the morphology, pore structure and physicochemical structure of membranes was investigated in terms of pure water flux, anti-fouling and antibacterial properties. The results showed that the addition of CuxP@g-C3N4 nanosheets not only improved the hydrophilicity and mechanical property of the membranes, but also enabled PVDF-CTFE membrane with the ability of inactivation bacteria and self-cleaning, which significantly enhanced the anti-fouling performance of PVDF-CTFE membrane in complex environment. When the amount of CuxP@g-C3N4 reached 2 wt%, the mixed matrix membrane possessed outstanding comprehensive performance with the pure water flux of 641.1 L m−2 h−1, antibacterial rate over 99% and self-cleaning under simulated sunlight, making the mixed matrix membrane a potential choice for wastewater treatment. In conclusion, this study enlightened the fabrication strategy of multifunctional mixed matrix membranes.

Abstract:A thin carbon nanotube (CNT) and carbon black (CB) composite electroactive layer was cast-coated on a commercial forward osmosis (FO) membrane surface. The FO fouling rate reduction and fouling reversibility of several cathodic CNT membranes were evaluated under relatively severe fouling conditions using synthetic wastewater containing 107-109 P. fluorescens (PF) mL−1 as feed in zero-flushing and long-interval-flushing modes over 84 h. The mechanically pressed p(CNT + CB) had the best antifouling performance with ~40% fouling rate reduction and ~1–2 times fouling resistance recovery (FRR) as compared to the control. The p(CNT + CB) membrane was then selected to evaluate the cathodic membrane antifouling performance in a more realistic scenario using short-interval-flushing (2 min every 40 min) with either PF or actual wastewater (WW) as the FO feed solution. Experimental results suggest different primary fouling mechanisms for PF and WW due to differences in the feed solution matrix. Even so, the p(CNT + CB) cathode at 2 V reduced the initial immediate fouling flux loss by 63% for WW as well as the fouling rate by ~50% for both the PF and WW relative to the control. Application of an electric potential was necessary to achieve antifouling performance, which confirmed an electroactive fouling mitigation mechanism.

Abstract:In the process of removing dye wastewater, the membrane surface is susceptible to contamination, resulting in reduced performance and limited dye separation efficiency. A single hydrophilic modification layer is not enough to achieve effective separation of different types of dyes. The present research designed a "double layer protection" method in order to overcome the above deficiencies. A solution of dopamine (DA) coated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-COOH) was covered on the surface of the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane by deposition, followed by grafting a layer of chitosan (CS) polymer brushes on its surface. The spatial double layer structure provides an excellent barrier effect and effectively reduces the contamination of dyes. When filtering different types of dyes, effective filtration of anionic and cationic dyes through the electrostatic effect of the first layer, the adsorption of CNTs in the second layer and the hydration layer of both layers. All membranes have excellent rejection properties. More importantly, the membranes also had good chemical and mechanical stability and their serviceability was not degraded. Therefore, the prepared PVDF-based multi-layer composite membranes behave a potential application prospect in the wastewater purification field.
The establishment of high-performance anti-fouling nanofiltration membranes via cooperation of annular supramolecular Cucurbit[6]uril and dendritic polyamidoamine

Abstract:In this work, annular supramolecular cucurbit[6]uril (CB6) and dendritic polyamidoamine (PAMAM) were employed to construct high-performance nanofiltration (NF) membranes via one-step interfacial polymerization (IP) process. The obtained membrane features not only the enlarged polyamide tunnels based on the large steric hindrance of CB6 and PAMAM but also the novel hydrophobic rotaxane tunnels based on the host-guest chemistry between CB6 and piperazine (PIP) or PAMAM. The CB6/PAMAM-modified membrane achieved nearly four times enhancement of pure water permeability (PWP) compared to the unmodified traditional membranes with still high Na2SO4 rejection. This indicates the positive contribution of CB6/PAMAM-modification to overcome the “trade-off” effect limiting NF development. In addition, the modified membrane shows the industry-leading separation performance for monovalent and bivalent anions due to the cooperation between the modified pore-size and surface charge. More valuably, CB6/PAMAM-modified membrane manifests the strong anti-fouling property not only in inorganic salt system but also in organic pollutant system based on the modified surface characteristics, indicating its broader application fields. This provides a feasible method to prepare a high-performance anti-fouling NF membrane.
