Abstract:In the present work, we report a greener and efficient process of hydrothermal conversion of rice straw (Cd low accumulated crop) and Elsholtzia splendens (Cu accumulated plant) to recover the metals and simultaneously produce biofuel for harmless treatment and resource reuse. The impacts of different types of additives, raw materials/solvent ratios, reaction times, and temperatures are investigated, and the composition of solid phase left is also studied for future efficient use. As the results suggest, almost all enriched metals (95 +/- 2% of Cu in E. splendens and almost all Cd in rice straw) are concentrated in solid phase after hydrothermal conversion with a considerable amount of carbohydrates contained, making the solid residue an excellent material for producing metal carbide catalysts. During the hydrothermal conversion, the additives have little impact on the metals recovery, and higher raw material/solvent ratios have higher yields of Cu/Cd. Finally, 22.0-25.0% yields of bio-oils without any metals are achieved with a high heating value (>= 35.2 MJ/kg) for both types of plants. This work creates new opportunities for the full utilization of heavy metal accumulated plants to remediate heavy metal contaminated land without any waste and pollution.

Abstract:The combination of bioleaching and electrokinetic remediation has been proved to be an effective method to remove heavy metals from municipal sewage sludge. The results showed that using electrokinetic remediation for six days after bioleaching for four days, the contents of Cu and Zn in sewage sludge decreased from 296.4mgkg−1 and 3756.2mgkg−1 to 63.4mgkg−1 and 33.3mgkg−1, respectively, which could meet the Chinese standard for land application of the heavy metals in sewage sludge. During the bioleaching process, both the organic sulfide fraction of Cu and the carbonate-bound and organic sulfide fractions of Zn transformed to soluble and ionic fractions which could easily migrate to the electrode zone and then accumulate there, Finally, the soluble and ionic fractions of these heavy metals could be disposed of or recycled expediently at the end of electrokinetic remediation.

Abstract:<p>Fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) enriches many leachable toxic metals which readily migrate into the environment, posing serious risks to the ecosystem and human. In this study, the elements mobility, leaching availability as well as the potential maximum amounts of heavy metals in fly ash were thoroughly evaluated. To decontaminate the toxic elements from resulting fly ash leachates, The aqueous zinc (Zn) was recovered using Cyanex 572, cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) were effectively removed through adsorption process by a self-assembled hierarchical hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanostructure. The removal mechanism of Cd, Cu and Zn by leaching, extraction and adsorption was revealed with the results from XRD, ICP-MS and SEM. The results showed that fly ash has a high mobility under maximum availability leaching test (95% of fly ash was dissolved), a recovery rate of 91% for Zn can be obtained using Cyanex 572, and a high adsorption rate (> 95% for both Cu and Cd) was reached using HAP for the pristine fly ash leachate. The outcomes from isothermal and kinetic study revealed that Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order model can well describe the Cd and Cu adsorption behavior. Economic assessment suggested that the application of HAP for the removal of Cd and Cu is a technically sound and economically feasible approach. The findings of this study demonstrated that this comprehensive process integrated leaching, solvent extraction and consequential decontamination can be a practical strategy for MSWI fly ash treatment.</p>

Abstract:Huge amounts of Pb smelting residues were generally stored in landfills or unprocessed worldwide, and thus demand novel strategies to implement clean production. In this paper, we proposed a clean, efficient and economical hydrometallurgical route to recycle the toxic heavy metals including Zn, Pb and Cd from the Pb residue by the biodegradable low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) and the cation exchange resin (CER, 001 × 7). The multi-objective leaching process of the three metals was optimized by combining saturated D-optimal design with desirability function simultaneously. The recovery rates of Zn, Pb and Cd were 88.72–96.36, 65.40–85.31 and 92.63–97.10% at the optimal conditions of 0.73–1.00 mol L −1 agent concentrations, 2.0–3.3 solution pH values and 71–120 min durations, respectively. Adsorption with CER from the resulting leachates recycled over 91.48% of the metal ions. The treated residues were almost completely decontaminated. Therefore, this research filled the gap of clean production route of hydrometallurgical recycling for metal resources from the low-grade slag.

Removal of Heavy Metals from MSWI Fly Ash Using Acidithiobacillus Strains: Effects of Substrate Concentration

Abstract:A mixed culture of Acidihiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidihiobacillus thiooxidans was used to leach heavy metals from MSWI fly ash (municipal solid waste incineration fly ash) to render them nonhazardous. Batch experiments were conducted to optimize substrate concentration for the bioleaching process. Results showed that substrate concentration significantly influenced solubilization of heavy metals and biooxidation yield of added sulfur. The optimum substrate concentration was 5g/L. After 15d of bioleaching, 89.7% of Cd, 81.8% of Zn, 72.6% of Cu and 29.3% of Pb were extracted from fly ash with the addition of 5g/L elemental sulfur and bacterial inoculation. Moreover, final yield of sulfur oxidation obtained 65.2%. TCLP(Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) tests confirmed that the bioleaching process resulted in the solubility reduction of Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb to below the regulatory limits. Results also suggested metal solubilization was mainly dependent on the acidification of fly ash suspension resulted from biooxidation of added elemental sulfur.
A new strategy on biomining of low grade base-metal sulfide tailings

Abstract:This study investigated the effect of designed microbial consortia on biomining of low grade base-metal sulfide tailings. The results show the amount of recycled metals were equal if the tailings were leached by mixed cultures of Leptospirillum ferriphilum and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans at three different ratios or by pure culture of L. ferriphilum, which was better than the pure culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. qPCR (quantitative polymerase chain reaction) demonstrated only L. ferriphilum functioned in the mixtures at initial stage. The results of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) via three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix combined with parallel factor analysis (3DEEM-PARAFAC) collected from mixed or pure cultures indicated there were no interactions between two strains. Secondary minerals were formed, but did not influence the leaching process. A new strategy for tailings biomining was proposed: only ferrous oxidizers should be added during the initial and middle biomining stage, while sulfur oxidizers should be added at the end.

Abstract:In this study, bioleaching is employed for removing heavy metals from excess sludge generated during municipal wastewater treatment. To avoid organic matter impact on bioleaching, aerobic digestion was performed as pretreatment of the bioleaching or accompanied with the bioleaching. The results showed that the leaching amounts of heavy metals from the process of aerobic digestion accompanied with bioleaching was 2.3 times more than that of the process of aerobic digestion followed by bioleaching. The stable-state proportions of Zn, Cu, Ni and Mn increased by 83%, 94%, 96% and 91%, respectively, in the process of aerobic digestion accompanied with bioleaching, and moreover, the reduction rate of MLSS increased by 22.7%. Although the content of ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus in sludge decreased after bioleaching treatment, they were still much higher than the soil background value. It indicates that the treated sludge still has agricultural value. High throughput sequencing analysis showed that the relative abundance of acid-producing bacteria (Romboutsia, Clostridium, Tricibacter, and Intestinibacter) significantly increased from 0% to 28.6%, 6.9%, 3.9%, and 2.4%. The enrichment of these acidogenic bacteria was the main reason for the pH decrease, which was conducive to the removal of heavy metals from sludge.

Abstract:Based on environmental and energetic analysis, a novel combined approach using bioelectrochemical systems (BES) followed by electrolysis reactors (ER) was tested for heavy metals removal from fly ash leachate, which contained high detectable levels of Zn, Pb and Cu according to X-ray diffraction analysis. Acetic acid was used as the fly ash leaching agent and tested under various leaching conditions. A favorable condition for the leaching process was identified to be liquid/solid ratio of 14:1 (w/w) and leaching duration 10h at initial pH 1.0. It was confirmed that the removal of heavy metals from fly ash leachate with the combination of BESs and ER is feasible. The metal removal efficiency was achieved at 98.5%, 95.4% and 98.1% for Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II), respectively. Results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) indicated that Cu(II) was reduced and recovered mainly as metal Cu on cathodes related to power production, while Zn(II) and Pb(II) were not spontaneously reduced in BESs without applied voltage and basically electrolyzed in the electrolysis reactors.

Abstract:The soil near tailings areas is relatively barren and contaminated by multi-metal(loid)s, seriously threatening the safety of crop production. Here, biochar and nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) were combined to improve the sterilized and unsterilized polymetallic contaminated soil, and soil incubation and soybean pot experiments were designed. Results showed that biochar and nHAP not only increased soil C, N, and P but also effectively reduced multi-metal bioavailability, wherein the combined application of the two amendments had the best effect on metal immobilization. The synergistic effect of the two amendments decreased the acid-soluble contents of Co, Cu, Fe, and Pb in rhizosphere soils up to 86.75%, 80.69%, 89.09%, and 96.70%, respectively. The ameliorant reduced the accumulation of metal(loid)s in soybean plants, and rhizosphere microorganisms inhibited the migration of soil metals to plants. Additionally, biochar and nHAP regulated the rhizosphere soil microbial community. The rhizosphere soil of the sterilization group tended to prioritize the restoration of the original dominant bacteria. As, Pb, Fe, Urease, OM, TN, and TP were the critical environmental variables affecting rhizosphere soil bacterial communities. Therefore, combining biochar and nHAP is an environmentally friendly strategy to reduce polymetallic mobility in tailings soil and crops and improve soil microbial community structure.

Feasibility of reduced iron species for promoting Li and Co recovery from spent LiCoO2 batteries using a mixed-culture bioleaching process

Abstract:The recovery of metals from spent LiCoO2 batteries (SLBs) is essential to avoid resource wastage and the production of hazardous waste. However, the major challenge in regard to recovering metals from SLBs using traditional bioleaching is the low Co yield. To overcome this issue, a mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus caldus and Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans was designed for use in SLBs leaching in this study. With the assistance of Fe2+ as a reductant, 99% of Co and 100% of Li were leached using the above mixed-culture bioleaching (MCB) process, thus solving the problem of low metal leaching efficiency from SLBs. Analysis of the underlying mechanism revealed that the effective extraction of metals from SLBs by the Fe2+-MCB process relied on Fe2+-releasing electrons to reduce refractory Co(III) to Co(II) that can be easily bioleached. Finally, the hazardous SLBs was transformed into a non-toxic material after treatment utilizing the Fe2+-MCB process. However, effective SLBs leaching was not achieved by the addition of Fe0 to the MCB system. Only 25% Co and 31% Li yields were obtained, as the addition of Fe0 caused acid consumption and bacterial apoptosis. Overall, this study revealed that reductants that cause acid consumption and harm bacteria should be ruled out for use in reductant-assisted bioleaching processes for extracting metals from SLBs.
Rare Earth Elements Recovery and Waste Management of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Ash

Abstract:The advancements in high-tech products and pursuit of renewable energy demand a massive and continuously growing supply of rare earth elements (REE). However, REE production from mining is heavily restricted by technoeconomic limitations and global geopolitical tensions. Municipal solid waste incineration ash (MSWIA) has been recently recognized as a potential alternative for REE recovery. This study applies and optimizes a green modular treatment system using organic ligands for effective REE recovery and concentration from MSWIA with minimal generation of secondary wastes. Citrate extracted >80% of total REE at pH 2.0 and ∼60% at pH 4.0. A subsequent oxalate precipitation step selectively concentrated >98% of extracted REE by ∼7-12 times compared to raw MSWIA. Waste byproducts were upcycled to synthesize zeolites, resulting in an overall solid waste volume reduction of ∼80% and heavy metal immobilization efficiency of ∼75% with negligible leaching, bringing the dual benefits of REE recovery and waste management. This work serves as a pioneer study in REE recovery from an emerging source and provides system level insights on the practicality of a simple three-step treatment system. Compared to existing literature, this system features a low chemical/energy input and a light environmental footprint.

Abstract:The solidification of heavy metals and the separation-recycling of chloride salts are effective approaches for the safe disposal of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash. This study achieved the solidification of the excessive heavy metal Cd by transforming MSWI fly ash into a solidified body mainly composed of ettringite, while also purifying the calcium and sulfate ions in the chloride solution. The research results demonstrate that the introduction of aluminum ions rapidly decreases the pH value of the MSWI fly ash reaction system. By adjusting the reaction system to a pH value of 11.50, the conversion rate of calcium ions reaches 99.68%, the separation rate of chloride reaches 95.99%, and the solidification rate of heavy metal Cd reaches 98.92%. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the vacancy formation at the Ca-2 position of ettringite and Cd entering the vacancy has a higher probability. The combination of DFT calculations and experiments validates that heavy metal Cd leads to charge redistribution, increased interplanar spacing, and decreased thermal stability of ettringite. The concentration of calcium ions in the solution decreases to 22.64 mg/L, achieving efficient recovery of sodium chloride and potassium chloride in a shorter process. The ettringite-based solidified body contains 0.87% chloride ions, showing potential for resource utilization in cement-based materials.

Abstract:Soil contamination with heavy metals has emerged as a global environmental threat, compromising agricultural productivity, ecosystem integrity, and human health. Conventional remediation techniques often fall short due to high costs, operational complexities, and environmental drawbacks. Plant-based disposal technologies, including biochar, phytometallurgy, and phrolysis, have emerged as promising solutions in this regard. Grounded in a novel experimental framework, biochar is studied for its dual role as soil amendment and metal adsorbent, while phytometallurgy is explored for its potential in resource recovery and economic benefits derived from harvested metal-rich plant biomass. Pyrolysis, in turn, is assessed for transforming contaminated biomass into value-added products, thereby minimizing waste. These plant disposal technologies create a circular model of remediation and resource utilization that holds the potential for application in large-scale soil recovery projects, development of environmentally friendly agro-industries, and advancement in sustainable waste management practices. This review mainly discussed cutting-edge plant disposal technologies—biochar application, phytometallurgy, and pyrolysis—as revolutionary approaches to soil heavy metal remediation. The efficacy, cost-effectiveness, and environmental impact of these innovative technologies are especially evaluated in comparison with traditional methods. The success of these applications could signal a paradigm shift in how we approach both environmental remediation and resource recovery, with profound implications for sustainable development and circular economy strategies.

Abstract:This study introduces an environmentally friendly process for recovering zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash using ammonium chloride leaching and ammonia removal. The leaching rates for Zn and Cu were 54.39% and 86.23%, respectively, with total recovery rates reaching 52.21% and 85.28%, respectively. The recovered precipitate demonstrated significant Zn (33.62%) and Cu (14.19%) contents, making it ideal for metal smelting. The ammonium leaching process also showcased effective reduction and dechlorination effects on the fly ash. The treated fly ash had a reduced mass of only 30.63% of the original, and chlorine content decreased from 26.23% to 0.84%. The results of this study support the sustainable utilization of MSWI fly ash by facilitating valuable resource recovery and promoting its conversion into construction materials.

Abstract:The transformation of heavy metals in ash from waste incineration plants is significant for ash management. The migration behavior of trace elements in ash after combustion, semidry deacidification, fabric filtration, and chelating agent stabilization was investigated from one waste incineration plant. The hazardous elements Zn, Pb, and As were enriched in raw fly ash (ash produced at a combustion temperature of 850–1100 °C) due to their relatively high volatility. Mercury, Cd, and Pb were captured in fly ash2 and processed by activated carbon and fabric filters. The removal rate of As (71%) was the highest among all studied elements due to a large amount of quinquevalent As removed. However, the average removal rate of elements in fly ash was only 13%. In the finally obtained fly ash3 (after chelating agent stabilization), a larger particle size (~100 μm) was found than that of raw ash. Furthermore, fly ash3 contains HgSO4 and trivalent As, which are toxic and likely to be precipitated when the fly ash3 is next utilized or deposited in a landfill, causing environmental risks.

Abstract:Copper smelter dust, a typical hazardous waste that is abundant in valuable heavy metals, holds the potential to be regarded as a promising resource. This study introduces a new approach that integrates chlorination roasting and cascade condensation to efficiently recover heavy metals from copper smelter dust. The findings demonstrate the successful separation of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, and Zn) as chlorides at nearly 100% efficiency while also effectively converting trivalent arsenic (As(III)) into pentavalent arsenic (As(V)) and immobilizing it in the roasting residues, thereby reducing environmental risk. Through the utilization of thermogravimetric mass spectrum analysis and thermodynamic equilibrium calculations, the chlorination process for heavy metals was investigated, revealing both direct and indirect chlorination processes. Additionally, the study resulted in the development of a CuO-based multiple-metals electrocatalyst from the oxidized roasting-recovered heavy metal chlorides, exhibiting significantly enhanced catalytic activity and faradaic efficiency for the electroreduction of CO2 into CO and CH4 compared to pure CuO electrocatalyst under similar electrocatalytic conditions. Overall, this work presents a sustainable and scalable method and new insights for addressing environmental risks while repurposing copper smelter dust.

Abstract:Extraction of heavy metals is the preferred option for municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash (FA) stabilization and reutilization. In this paper, a co-reduction process for FA and red mud (RM) was proposed. The complementary compositions of FA and RM were favorable for the volatilization of volatile heavy metals and the alloy formation of siderophile heavy metals in the co-reduction system. The molten stage temperature of co-reduction FA and RM can be decreased significantly to 1100 degrees C - 1300 degrees C, compared with the molten stage temperature of direct melting FA above 1400 degrees C. The wastes were converted into three products: iron alloy containing Fe, Cu, Ni, and Cr; secondary FA containing Pb, Zn, and Cd; and vitrified slag. In the optimized co-reduction process, 76.06 % Fe, 74.53 % Cu, 83.40 % Ni, and 58.44 % Cr can be recovered by iron alloy, and 98.95 % Cd, 98.21 % Pb, and 86.78 % Zn can be recovered by secondary FA. The contents of heavy metals in the vitrified slag are much lower than those in traditional direct melting slag. Consequently, this co-reduction process could be a more environmentally sound solution for beneficial reutilization of FA and RM.

Abstract:The recovery of precious metals from solid waste through bioleaching has become a research hotspot in recent years. Thus, in this study, different strategies, such as chemical sulfuric acid leaching and mixed consortium bioleaching, were adopted to extract copper from Copper-Containing Electroplating Sludge. The results showed that, compared to chemical leaching, bioleaching showed a much better performance. Indeed, copper bioleaching efficiency reached 94.3% on day 7 (21.1% higher than that of chemical leaching). The results also indicated that the process of bioleaching involved more mechanisms and reactions than that of chemical leaching. The SEM and EDX tests showed that the surface morphology of the sludge changed significantly after bioleaching, and that an insignificant amount of copper remained in the leached residues. Furthermore, the leached residues passed the characteristic leaching toxic test and thus can be considered as non-hazardous raw materials for the construction industry. Hence, adopting a mixed consortium leaching process to extract copper from Copper-Containing Electroplating Sludge will not only significantly reduce environmental pollution, but will also use metal resources more efficiently.

Abstract:Resourcization has become a popular research topic for the final disposal of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA). However, the current research is limited to building material preparation or valuable chloride recovery, which may cause resource waste and secondary pollution. A unique process, heat treatment with the addition of kaolin (KL), was presented to achieve complete resource utilization of MSWI FA. The physical properties of ceramsite could be improved by adding KL, and dioxin removal, heavy metals, and valuable chloride separation could be achieved via sintering at 1150 °C. The separation and purification of dust carried by the flue gas during thermal treatment (secondary fly ash) was achieved via wet separation. A building ceramsite with a compressive strength of 24.8 MPa was obtained, whereas dioxin and heavy metal toxicity were far below the standard limits. Heavy metal content was enriched by 12 times, approximately 59.6%, achieved after secondary fly ash separation and purification. A heavy metal product containing 39.5% Zn, 19.1% Pb, and chloride salt containing 41.8% KCl were obtained. This showed a high potential for the developed process to separate multiple valuable elements from ashes. This novel process will further promote the development and application of harmless and resourceful technologies for MSWI FA.

Abstract:With the annual increase in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) disposal, valuable resources are being generated with worrying waste, so it is strategically important to recover the critical metals from them. Individual high temperature or leaching processes do not apparently achieve very satisfactory results. In the present work, the reduction with zinc powder was able to convert the lithium in LiNixCoyMnzO2 (NCM) to soluble LiOH, while the reduction and ammonia complexation environment generated by the decomposition of cysteine (Cys) achieved an efficient leaching of transition metals without additional additives. The leaching efficiency of Li can reach more than 92 %, while that of Ni/Co/Mn reaches more than 97 % through the regulation of the parameters of each process. In particular, an in-situ redox mechanism is proposed to explain the efficient leaching of transition metals, which further enriches the theory of spent LIBs recycling and provides a promising idea for various hydrometallurgical extraction systems.
