Abstract:Construction of well-defined sulfur-rich macromolecules in a facile manner is an interesting but challenging topic. Herein, we disclose how to readily construct well-defined triblock sulfur-rich thermoplastic elastomers via a self-switchable isothiocyanate/episulfide copolymerization and air-assisted oxidative coupling strategy. During self-switchable polymerization, alternating copolymerization of isothiocyanate and episulfide occurs initially due to the lower energy barrier for isothiocyanate insertion with respect to successive episulfide ring-opening. After exhaustion of isothiocyanate, ring-opening polymerization of episulfide begins, providing diblock polymers. Subsequent exposure of the reaction to air leads to a transformation of diblock copolymers into triblock thermoplastic elastomers. This protocol can be extended to diverse isothiocyanates and episulfides, allowing fine-tuning of the performance of the produced sulfur-rich thermoplastic elastomers.
Dynamic Sulfur Bonds Initiate Polymerization of Vinyl and Allyl Ethers at Mild Temperatures

Abstract:Elemental sulfur (S8) is produced in abundance during petroleum refinement, generating millions of tons of waste. Inverse vulcanization utilizes this waste as a feedstock to create new materials. Heating S8 above 159 °C initiates ring-opening, forming radicals that react with difunctional monomers to create polysulfides. High temperature requirements limit the types of monomers that can be incorporated by inverse vulcanization. However, cleaving the linear sulfur chains present in the polysulfides requires less energy. Here, poly(S–divinylbenzene) with varied sulfur contents has been synthesized to act as a prepolymer capable of radical formation at much lower temperatures (90 °C). Dynamic sulfur bonds initiate polymerization with a family of vinylic and allylic ethers. Terpolymers were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry to examine the impact on structure and physical properties. This method expands on inverse vulcanized polymers to create a mild, solvent-free route to polysulfide synthesis.

Abstract:Abstract Inverse vulcanization, a sustainable platform, can transform sulfur, an industrial by-product, into polymers with broad promising applications such as heavy metal capture, electrochemistry and antimicrobials. However, the process usually requires high temperatures (≥159 °C), and the crosslinkers needed to stabilize the sulfur are therefore limited to high-boiling-point monomers only. Here, we report an alternative route for inverse vulcanization—mechanochemical synthesis, with advantages of mild conditions (room temperature), short reaction time (3 h), high atom economy, less H 2 S, and broader monomer range. Successful generation of polymers using crosslinkers ranging from aromatic, aliphatic to volatile, including renewable monomers, demonstrates this method is powerful and versatile. Compared with thermal synthesis, the mechanochemically synthesized products show enhanced mercury capture. The resulting polymers show thermal and light induced recycling. The speed, ease, versatility, safety, and green nature of this process offers a more potential future for inverse vulcanization, and enables further unexpected discoveries.

Abstract:Sulfur as a side product of natural gas and oil refining is an underused resource. Converting landfilled sulfur waste into materials merges the ecological imperative of resource efficiency with economic considerations. A strategy to convert sulfur into polymeric materials is the inverse vulcanization reaction of sulfur with alkenes. However, the materials formed are of limited applicability, because they need to be cured at high temperatures (>130 °C) for many hours. Herein, we report the reaction of elemental sulfur with styrylethyltrimethoxysilane. Marrying the inverse vulcanization and silane chemistry yielded high sulfur content polysilanes, which could be cured via room temperature polycondensation to obtain coated surfaces, particles, and crosslinked materials. The polycondensation was triggered by hydrolysis of poly(sulfur-r-styrylethyltrimethoxysilane) (poly(Sn -r-StyTMS) under mild conditions (HCl, pH 4). For the first time, an inverse vulcanization polymer could be conveniently coated and mildly cured via post-polycondensation. Silica microparticles coated with the high sulfur content polymer could improve their Hg2+ ion remediation capability.

Abstract:The inverse vulcanization (IV) of elemental sulfur to generate sulfur-rich functional polymers has attracted much recent attention. However, the harsh reaction conditions required, even with metal catalysts, constrains the range of feasible crosslinkers. We report here a photoinduced IV that enables reaction at ambient temperatures, greatly broadening the scope for both substrates and products. These conditions enable volatile and gaseous alkenes and alkynes to be used in IV, leading to sustainable alternatives for environmentally harmful plastics that were hitherto inaccessible. Density functional theory calculations reveal different energy barriers for thermal, catalytic and photoinduced IV processes. This protocol circumvents the long curing times that are common in IV, generates no H 2 S by-products, and produces high-molecular-weight polymers (up to 460,000 g mol −1 ) with almost 100% atom economy. This photoinduced IV strategy advances both the fundamental chemistry of IV and its potential industrial application to generate materials from waste feedstocks.

Abstract:There is a need for sustainable valorization solutions for the problem of excess sulfur arising from abundant natural sources of sulfur and the production of millions of tons of sulfur annually as a byproduct of refineries. Developing sulfur-based polymers with enhanced mechanical properties using the process of inverse vulcanization could be a valuable endeavor, since the poor mechanical properties of current sulfur polymers limit their scale-up and widespread application. Herein, we studied the performance of titanium oxide (TiO2) in improving the mechanical properties of the sulfur polymer through copolymerization with oleic acid. To study the efficacy of TiO2 and oleic acid in copolymerization with sulfur. we used laboratory experiments and a computational approach geared toward the use of the density functional theory (DFT). Based on the DFT results, the coordination of the third and fourth ligands (oleic acid chains) to the Ti4+ ion are not as strong as the coordination of the first two ligands mainly because of the high steric hindrance around the metal ion. The low values of binding energy for Ti2+–di oleate and Ti+–tri oleate make them more accessible to sulfur chains. This in turn, promotes the cross-linking reactions in a process of inverse vulcanization. This was further reflected in an increase of up to 637.3% in sulfur–oleic acid blends in presence of TiO2. This study contributes to the sustainable use of abundant sulfur and the sustainable development of the polymer industry.

Abstract:Inverse Vulcanisation (IV) under neat reaction conditions (without solvent) has enabled the research and development of the fundamental chemistry as well as the generation of unique sulfur-rich polymers with unprecedented properties. However, such bulk polymerisation can be problematic, especially with high molecular weight. The energetics of the thermal polymerisation process, combined with poor heat control of solvent-free polymerisation, cause risks of dangerous auto-acceleration if the process is scaled up. The required high temperatures (>160 °C or 135 °C even with catalysts), exceed the boiling point of most commonplace organic solvents, preventing implementation of solvents for IV under thermal conditions. We report here a photo-induced IV polymerisation in solvent at room temperature. The reactions proceed smoothly and efficiently with excellent yields, despite the potential negative factors of reflection, refraction, and low absorption intensity of light by these organic solvents, opening an attractive avenue for the preparation of functional sulfur-rich polymers as well as their potential applications. The extension of crosslinkers to the value-added C5 fraction of industrial byproduct and β-carotene showcase the benefit of this low temperature protocol. Mechanistic study reveals that the moisture in both substrates and solvents might play a key role for the generation of toxic H2S by-product in IV reaction under thermal conditions, with photopolymerisation remaining un-affected. This protocol not only extensively expands the scope of crosslinkers for the IV reaction together with resultant polymers, but also provides a potential scale-up route for industrial application by avoiding the generation of toxic H2S by-product and possible explosion risk with high temperature.

Abstract:Vapor-phase isomerization of endo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (endo-THDCPD) to exo-THDCPD over zeolite catalysts (HY, H-USY, Hβ, HZSM-5 and HMOR) was studied as a green synthesis route for exo-THDCPD. The HY and H-USY catalysts showed catalytic activity while the Hβ, HZSM-5 and HMOR catalysts did not. Higher yield of exo-THDCPD was obtained over the H-USY catalyst than that over the HY catalyst, attributing to the presence of strong acid sites and mesopores in the H-USY catalyst. The yield of exo-THDCPD obtained via vapor-phase isomerization was better than that reported via liquid-phase isomerization. In addition to the properties of the catalyst itself, the vapor-phase isomerization process of endo-THDCPD was also affected by the reaction temperature, the concentration of endo-THDCPD, the contact time and the time on stream. Under the optimized conditions, high purity (>98wt%) exo-THDCPD was directly obtained without any separation processes. Although deactivation of the catalyst with the time on stream was observed, the activity could be recovered easily via regeneration in air.

Abstract:Dynamic covalent crosslinking of commodity thermoplastics is a desirable target in material development, as it promises to combine the enhanced mechanical properties and thermal/solvent stability of thermosets with reprocessability and plastic flow under certain conditions activating the bond exchange. Many attempts of this development suffer from the same two problems: enhanced cost due to complex and often toxic chemicals, and the effective melt‐flow index being too low for practical use. Here we return to the origins of polymer networks, and mimic the vulcanization of natural rubber in the commodity polypropylene using elemental sulfur initiated by peroxide. Forming sulfur bridges allows easy catalyst‐free reprocessability based on the disulfide bond exchange. We study a broad range of compositions and reaction conditions, finding optimal balance between the crosslinking and chain scission in the melt compounder, and demonstrating much enhanced characteristics of the resulting materials. We specifically discuss and evaluate the balance between the rubber‐elastic network response at high temperatures and the plastic flow enabled by disulfide exchange, responsible for the reprocessing of our vitrimers.

Abstract:Crosslinking of diene rubbers by the traditional sulfur-based curing package inevitably utilizes toxic activators and accelerants, which causes potential dangers and environmental pollution. Herein, we report on the rapid synthesis of sulfur co-polymers by inverse vulcanization of S-8 and styrene through a nucleophilic activation mechanism and demonstrate that the inverse vulcanised co-polymer is highly efficient in crosslinking diene rubbers in a green manner. Compared with the traditional sulfur-cured counterpart, the sulfur co-polymer-cured sample with an identical crosslinking density exhibits a remarkably larger breaking strain and a higher elasticity.

Abstract:Inverse vulcanization utilizes an organic compound as reagent for crosslinking elemental sulfur to result in corresponding polymeric material with a high sulfur content. This work, employing 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene (TIPB) as the reagent, demonstrates the first attempt on extending the scope of crosslinking agents of inverse vulcanization to saturate compounds. Under nuclear magnetic spectroscopic analysis, the reactions between TIPB and elemental sulfur take places through ring-opening reaction of S-8 resulting in sulfur radicals at sulfur chain ends, radicals transferring to isopropyl groups of TIPB, and radical coupling reactions between carbon radicals and sulfur radicals. The obtained products are similar to the sulfur polymers from conventional inverse vulcanization processes and show self-healing property.

Abstract:Inverse vulcanized polymer materials have received considerable attention as a way to use sulfur, an industrial byproduct, as a starting material for synthesis. The resulting high-sulfur content polymers have also been investigated because their properties give rise to promising applications such as infrared imaging, energy storage, and heavy metal capture due to their unique structure. However, synthesis of a flexible sulfur polymer network which shows good mechanical properties combining high strength, high elongation, and high toughness is still a significant challenge. Moreover, further exploration of the properties of sulfur polymers to better understand the relationship between the polymers’ structure with their performance is still needed. Here, a range of cross-linked sulfur polymers with high tensile elongation and toughness and without losing high strength were successfully synthesized. The obtained cross-linked sulfur polymers show high solvent tolerance in most organic solvents but are demonstrated to be chemically de-cross-linked in polar solvents dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and can be re-cross-linked after removing the solvent due to the high sulfur ranks present in the polymer network. Despite the significantly improved mechanical properties, highly efficient thermal recycling performance typical of inverse vulcanized polymers was retained. Flexibility and durability, combined with chemical and thermal recycling, could open a new door for wider applications of inverse vulcanized polymers.

Abstract:Elemental sulfur has shown to be a promising alternative feedstock for development of novel polymeric materials with high sulfur content. However, the utilization of inverse vulcanized polymers is restricted by the limitation of functional comonomers suitable for an inverse vulcanization. Control over properties and structure of inverse vulcanized polymers still poses a challenge to current research due to the dynamic nature of sulfur-sulfur bonds and high temperature of inverse vulcanization reactions. In here, we report for the first time the inverse vulcanization of norbornenyl pentafluorophenyl ester (NB-PFPE), allowing for post-modification of inverse vulcanized polymers via amidation of reactive PFP esters to yield high sulfur content polymers under mild conditions. Amidation of the precursor material with three functional primary amines (α-amino-ω-methoxy polyethylene glycol, aminopropyl trimethoxy silane, allylamine) was investigated. The resulting materials were applicable as sulfur containing poly(ethylene glycol) nanoparticles in aqueous environment. Cross-linked mercury adsorbents, sulfur surface coatings, and high-sulfur content networks with predictable thermal properties were achievable using aminopropyl trimethoxy silane and allylamine for post-polymerization modification, respectively. With the broad range of different amines available and applicable for post-polymerization modification, the versatility of poly(sulfur-random-NB-PFPE) as a platform precursor polymer for novel specialized sulfur containing materials was showcased.

Turning Abundant Waste Sulfur to Polymers for Manufacturing: Exploiting Role of Organic Crosslinkers and Benign Catalysts

Abstract:Abundant source of sulfur produced as byproduct of refineries demands sustainable valorization solutions. Use of organic crosslinkers and benign catalysts to polymerize sulfur for use in manufacturing offers a sustainable value-added application. This paper introduces MgO as an effective benign catalyst and oleic acid as an organic crosslinker for inverse vulcanization of sulfur. Wefurther compare efficacy of MgOwith other metal catalysts (ZnO and CaO) using molecular modeling and laboratory experiments. ZnO is commonly used in elastomeric formulations; however, industries try hard to keep the ZnOlevel low because of its environmental impact, particularly on aquatic organisms, and for economic reasons. Our rheological characterization shows the inverse vulcanization is enhanced when MgO is present as evidenced by the increase of viscosity of sulfur-oleic acid blends by 94 % relative to the blend without catalyst and 39 % relative to the blend with ZnO catalyst. Based on our quantum-based molecular modeling, using density functional theory (DFT), coordination complexes of Mg oleate (Mg (RCOO)2), made from the reaction between oleic acid and MgO, are energetically better stabilized compared to Zn or Ca oleate. Stronger interactions in Mg oleate, leading to the more stabilized coordination complexes, could be a reason for higher viscosity for MgO/sulfur-oleic acid compared to ZnO/sulfur-oleic acid. In complexes of sulfur and metal oleate, regardless of the electronic nature of sulfur chains (ionic or radical form), coordination complexes containing MgO show binding energies that are higher than those of Zn complexes and notably higher than those of Ca complexes, indicating capability of Mg substitution in Zn oleate compounds as catalysts. Studying the addition reactions of sulfur radicals to oleic acid and the formation of CAS bonds, using DFT modeling, shows the superiority of allylic (-CH=CH-(C) over dotH) sites of oleic acid over olefinic (-C=C-) sites in reactions of sulfur radicals. Compared to sulfur radicals, sulfur chains in ionic character provide higher binding energies with metal oleates because of the electrostatic interactions between the positively charged metal and negative sulfur atoms. Abstract:Developing polymerized sulfur using a biogenic catalyst derived from silver grass (SG) for enhanced mechanical performance and sustainability. This study introduces a novel biogenic catalyst derived from silver grass (SG) that could revolutionize sulfur polymerization, addressing the critical challenge of sulfur waste management. The oil refining industry generates large quantities of sulfur byproducts, which pose significant environmental risks. Inverse vulcanization offers a promising method to convert this waste into valuable polymers, but it traditionally relies on costly and environmentally harmful catalysts. The development of benign, sustainable catalysts is essential to making sulfur polymerization more eco‐friendly and scalable. This research demonstrates the effectiveness of the SG biogenic catalyst compared to the conventional chemical catalyst zinc diethyldithiocarbamate (Zn(DTC)2). Rheological characterizations reveal that the SG catalyst not only outperforms Zn(DTC)2 at elevated temperatures but also provides superior moisture resistance, enhancing polymer durability. Additionally, the SG‐catalyzed polymer exhibits better elasticity and structural integrity under mechanical stress. A density functional theory (DFT)‐based study further supports these findings, showing that the SG biochar matrix enables stronger Zn‐S coordination, resulting in improved polymer properties. These results highlight the potential of this biogenic catalyst to revolutionize sulfur polymerization, paving the way for more sustainable practices in the chemical industry by converting waste sulfur into valuable polymer resources.

Abstract:Inverse vulcanization provides a facile but effective methodology to create sulfur-based polymers with diverse applications by utilization of element sulfur, a massive waste product from petroleum industry. An integration of functional groups into sulfur-based polymers may inject new vitality for the traditional discipline of rubber composites, though the examples remain limited. Herein, we reported the synthesis of polysulfur copolymers (STs) via one- or two-step methods by inverse vulcanization of sulfur and triethoxyvinylsilane (TEVS) and their function mechanism in silica-filled diene rubber composites. Owing to the presence of polysulfide and multiple alkoxysilyl moieties, STs could provide two functions of vulcanizator and interfacial modifier through the reaction with the rubber chains and silica, enabling the crosslinking of rubber and uniform dispersion of silica. Importantly, ST-modified composites exhibited more uniform silica dispersion and stronger interfacial interaction than sulfur cross-linked BR/silica composites modified with conventional coupling agents, thus leading to more enhancements of the mechanical properties. Moreover, the mechanism of ST copolymers in the silica filled diene rubber composites was proposed.

Abstract:Sulfur, which is generated from the waste byproducts in the oil and gas refinery industry, is an abundant, cheap, stable, and readily available source in the world. However, the utilization of excessive amounts of sulfur is mostly limited, and developing novel methods for sulfur conversion is still a global concern. Here, we report a facile one-step conversion from elemental sulfur to functional poly(O-thiocarbamate)s through a multicomponent polymerization of sulfur, diols, and diisocyanides, which possesses a series of advantages such as mild condition (55 degrees C), short reaction time (1 h), 100% atom economy, and transition-metal free in the catalyst system. Seven poly(O-thiocarbamate)s are constructed with high yields (up to 95%), large molecular weight (up to 53100 of M-w), good solubility in organic solvents, and completely new polymer structures. The poly(O-thiocarbamate)s possess a high refractive index above 1.7 from 600 to 1700 nm by adjusting the sulfur content. By incorporating tetraphenylethene (TPE) moieties into the polymer structure, the poly(O-thiocarbamate)s can also be designed as fluorescent sensors to detect harmful metal cation of Hg2+ in a turn-on mode with high sensitivity (LOD = 32 nM) and excellent selectivity (over interference cations of Pb2+, Au3+, Ag+). Different from the previous reports, the exact coordination structure is first identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which is revealed in a tetracoordination fashion (two sulfur and two chloride) using a model coordination compound.

Abstract:We discuss in this CONCEPT mini-review the fundamental and polymerization chemistry of inverse vulcanization for the preparation of statistical and segmented sulfur copolymers, which have been actively developed and advanced in various applications over the past decade. We explicitly delve into a discussion of step-growth polymerization constructs to describe the inverse vulcanization process and discuss prepolymer approaches for the synthesis of segmented sulfur polyurethanes. We further discuss the advantages of inverse vulcanization in conjunction with dynamic covalent polymerization and post-polymerization modifications to prepare segmented block copolymers with enhanced thermomechanical and flame retardant properties of these materials.

Abstract:Novel sulfur-silsesquioxane random copolymer (poly(S-r-POSS)) was synthesized via the radical reaction between liquid sulfur and octavinyl silsesquioxane. Particulate solid POSS was dispersed in molten sulfur and heated in order to initiate the free radical reaction (inverse vulcanization). The appearance of new C–S bonds along with the disappearance of C=C bonds from vinyl groups was confirmed by Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. Moreover, the formation of saturated single C–C bonds from the reacting vinyl groups was revealed by FTIR. Microhomogenity of the copolymer was analyzed by means of SEM-EDS mapping and its thermal properties were studied using the TG-DSC method.
