Abstract:Inverse vulcanization utilizes an organic compound as reagent for crosslinking elemental sulfur to result in corresponding polymeric material with a high sulfur content. This work, employing 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene (TIPB) as the reagent, demonstrates the first attempt on extending the scope of crosslinking agents of inverse vulcanization to saturate compounds. Under nuclear magnetic spectroscopic analysis, the reactions between TIPB and elemental sulfur take places through ring-opening reaction of S-8 resulting in sulfur radicals at sulfur chain ends, radicals transferring to isopropyl groups of TIPB, and radical coupling reactions between carbon radicals and sulfur radicals. The obtained products are similar to the sulfur polymers from conventional inverse vulcanization processes and show self-healing property.

Abstract:The covalent cross-linked structure imparts strong elasticity and environmental resistance to elastomers, while the irreversibility of covalent bonds restricts the recycling of rubbers. Integrating vitrimer chemistry into chemical cross-linked networks appears to be a charming method to combine the exciting properties of thermoplastics and thermosets. However, it is still a challenge to design a rubber vitrimer with robust mechanical properties. Here, inspired by supramolecular interactions associated with natural materials, we demonstrated a dual reversible cross-linked SBR vitrimer by introducing imine bonds and hydrogen bonding. The integration of hydrogen bonding endows the elastomer vitrimer with significantly improved strength and toughness without influencing the recycling ability. This work provides a simple and effective strategy in the design of elastomer vitrimers with robust mechanical properties and good recyclability.

Abstract:Improving the interfacial interaction between rubber and silica nanoparticles, and simultaneously reducing free sulfur and preventing migration and volatilization of a rubber vulcanizing agent, commercial sulfur compound aliphatic ether polysulfide (VA-7) was chemically attached to the silica surface to obtain a functionalized nanoparticle (silica-s-VA7). Functional nanoparticles can not only effectively crosslink rubber without sulfur as a novel vulcanizator, but are also evenly dispersed in the rubber matrix and improve the dispersion of the remaining pristine silica as an interfacial compatibilizer. In addition, the thicker immobilized polymer layer and prominent crosslinking density of SBR nanocomposites simultaneously demonstrate that the novel vulcanizing agent silica-s-VA7 gives rise to significant improvement on the rubber–filler interfacial adhesion on account of the covalent linkages of organic and inorganic interfaces between elastomer and nanofillers. We envisage that this strategy may provide a new avenue to implement high-efficiency design for a multifunctional rubber-vulcanizing agent through an organic and inorganic hybridization mechanism.

Abstract:Abstract Inverse vulcanization, a sustainable platform, can transform sulfur, an industrial by-product, into polymers with broad promising applications such as heavy metal capture, electrochemistry and antimicrobials. However, the process usually requires high temperatures (≥159 °C), and the crosslinkers needed to stabilize the sulfur are therefore limited to high-boiling-point monomers only. Here, we report an alternative route for inverse vulcanization—mechanochemical synthesis, with advantages of mild conditions (room temperature), short reaction time (3 h), high atom economy, less H 2 S, and broader monomer range. Successful generation of polymers using crosslinkers ranging from aromatic, aliphatic to volatile, including renewable monomers, demonstrates this method is powerful and versatile. Compared with thermal synthesis, the mechanochemically synthesized products show enhanced mercury capture. The resulting polymers show thermal and light induced recycling. The speed, ease, versatility, safety, and green nature of this process offers a more potential future for inverse vulcanization, and enables further unexpected discoveries.

Abstract:Elemental sulfur has shown to be a promising alternative feedstock for development of novel polymeric materials with high sulfur content. However, the utilization of inverse vulcanized polymers is restricted by the limitation of functional comonomers suitable for an inverse vulcanization. Control over properties and structure of inverse vulcanized polymers still poses a challenge to current research due to the dynamic nature of sulfur-sulfur bonds and high temperature of inverse vulcanization reactions. In here, we report for the first time the inverse vulcanization of norbornenyl pentafluorophenyl ester (NB-PFPE), allowing for post-modification of inverse vulcanized polymers via amidation of reactive PFP esters to yield high sulfur content polymers under mild conditions. Amidation of the precursor material with three functional primary amines (α-amino-ω-methoxy polyethylene glycol, aminopropyl trimethoxy silane, allylamine) was investigated. The resulting materials were applicable as sulfur containing poly(ethylene glycol) nanoparticles in aqueous environment. Cross-linked mercury adsorbents, sulfur surface coatings, and high-sulfur content networks with predictable thermal properties were achievable using aminopropyl trimethoxy silane and allylamine for post-polymerization modification, respectively. With the broad range of different amines available and applicable for post-polymerization modification, the versatility of poly(sulfur-random-NB-PFPE) as a platform precursor polymer for novel specialized sulfur containing materials was showcased.

Abstract:Inverse vulcanized polymer materials have received considerable attention as a way to use sulfur, an industrial byproduct, as a starting material for synthesis. The resulting high-sulfur content polymers have also been investigated because their properties give rise to promising applications such as infrared imaging, energy storage, and heavy metal capture due to their unique structure. However, synthesis of a flexible sulfur polymer network which shows good mechanical properties combining high strength, high elongation, and high toughness is still a significant challenge. Moreover, further exploration of the properties of sulfur polymers to better understand the relationship between the polymers’ structure with their performance is still needed. Here, a range of cross-linked sulfur polymers with high tensile elongation and toughness and without losing high strength were successfully synthesized. The obtained cross-linked sulfur polymers show high solvent tolerance in most organic solvents but are demonstrated to be chemically de-cross-linked in polar solvents dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and can be re-cross-linked after removing the solvent due to the high sulfur ranks present in the polymer network. Despite the significantly improved mechanical properties, highly efficient thermal recycling performance typical of inverse vulcanized polymers was retained. Flexibility and durability, combined with chemical and thermal recycling, could open a new door for wider applications of inverse vulcanized polymers.

Abstract:We discuss in this CONCEPT mini-review the fundamental and polymerization chemistry of inverse vulcanization for the preparation of statistical and segmented sulfur copolymers, which have been actively developed and advanced in various applications over the past decade. We explicitly delve into a discussion of step-growth polymerization constructs to describe the inverse vulcanization process and discuss prepolymer approaches for the synthesis of segmented sulfur polyurethanes. We further discuss the advantages of inverse vulcanization in conjunction with dynamic covalent polymerization and post-polymerization modifications to prepare segmented block copolymers with enhanced thermomechanical and flame retardant properties of these materials.

Abstract:Sulfur as a side product of natural gas and oil refining is an underused resource. Converting landfilled sulfur waste into materials merges the ecological imperative of resource efficiency with economic considerations. A strategy to convert sulfur into polymeric materials is the inverse vulcanization reaction of sulfur with alkenes. However, the materials formed are of limited applicability, because they need to be cured at high temperatures (>130 °C) for many hours. Herein, we report the reaction of elemental sulfur with styrylethyltrimethoxysilane. Marrying the inverse vulcanization and silane chemistry yielded high sulfur content polysilanes, which could be cured via room temperature polycondensation to obtain coated surfaces, particles, and crosslinked materials. The polycondensation was triggered by hydrolysis of poly(sulfur-r-styrylethyltrimethoxysilane) (poly(Sn -r-StyTMS) under mild conditions (HCl, pH 4). For the first time, an inverse vulcanization polymer could be conveniently coated and mildly cured via post-polycondensation. Silica microparticles coated with the high sulfur content polymer could improve their Hg2+ ion remediation capability.

Abstract:Novel sulfur-silsesquioxane random copolymer (poly(S-r-POSS)) was synthesized via the radical reaction between liquid sulfur and octavinyl silsesquioxane. Particulate solid POSS was dispersed in molten sulfur and heated in order to initiate the free radical reaction (inverse vulcanization). The appearance of new C–S bonds along with the disappearance of C=C bonds from vinyl groups was confirmed by Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. Moreover, the formation of saturated single C–C bonds from the reacting vinyl groups was revealed by FTIR. Microhomogenity of the copolymer was analyzed by means of SEM-EDS mapping and its thermal properties were studied using the TG-DSC method. Abstract:Designing sustainable epoxy resins with intrinsic recyclability and degradability has become vital in polymer science. Here, we report sulfur chain-modified epoxy networks (S x E y U z ) through catalyst-free tri-component polymerization of elemental sulfur with glycidyl ethers of bio-sourced eugenol (EGE) and 10-undecenol (UGE) via inverse vulcanization. The biogenic allyl protons on EGE were disclosed to be critical for the dual-mechanism cross-linking system. Intermediates from the tri-component polymerization were found to be flowable, storable, and post-curable. Reprocessable epoxy polymers with tensile strength up to 13.0 MPa were obtained after curing, surpassing most reported bio-based polymers via inverse vulcanization. Carbon fiber (CF) composites fabricated in the S x E y U z matrix can be readily digested in a methanol solution of Na2S and neat hexylamine to recycle CF.

Abstract:The inverse vulcanization (IV) of elemental sulfur to generate sulfur-rich functional polymers has attracted much recent attention. However, the harsh reaction conditions required, even with metal catalysts, constrains the range of feasible crosslinkers. We report here a photoinduced IV that enables reaction at ambient temperatures, greatly broadening the scope for both substrates and products. These conditions enable volatile and gaseous alkenes and alkynes to be used in IV, leading to sustainable alternatives for environmentally harmful plastics that were hitherto inaccessible. Density functional theory calculations reveal different energy barriers for thermal, catalytic and photoinduced IV processes. This protocol circumvents the long curing times that are common in IV, generates no H 2 S by-products, and produces high-molecular-weight polymers (up to 460,000 g mol −1 ) with almost 100% atom economy. This photoinduced IV strategy advances both the fundamental chemistry of IV and its potential industrial application to generate materials from waste feedstocks.

Abstract:In this paper, tung oil-linseed oil (TO-LSO) and styrene-linseed oil (STY-LSO) were used as raw materials of sulfur-rich copolymers, which were then reversed vulcanized with S 8 at 130°C, and the gel time of the reaction was recorded. At the same time, 1 H NMR, DSC, XRD, sodium sulfite titration and other characterization methods were used to measure the reaction degree, verify the conjugated structure to improve the reaction degree, and study the synthesis mechanism of sulfur-rich copolymer. The results show that the conjugated structure can improve the reaction degree. And when the proportion of TO and STY is 20 and 10% respectively, the reaction gel time is shortened, the reaction degree is greatly deepened, and the effect of promoting polymerization can be significantly obtained. The synthesis mechanism of copolymer is the result of conjugated structure and diallyl group. The self-repair of sulfur-rich copolymers at different temperature and holding time by hot press shows that poly(20-TO-LSO-50S) can realize the S‒S bond self-repair after being compressed at 120°C for 4 h, and the surface of polymer disc was smoother and more uniform. However, poly(10STY-LSO-50S) can be repaired only after being compressed for 8 h. TO can not only enhance the synthesis process, but also enhance the performance of sulfur-rich materials and broaden the application field.

Abstract:The vulcanizate structure of filled compounds is affected by filler-rubber interactions (FRI) and the chemical crosslink density (CCD) of the matrix rubber. In particular, in filled compounds using a silica-silane system, FRIs due to silica-rubber coupling are a major influencing factor for the vulcanizate structure and physical properties. In this study, the effect of sulfur variation on the vulcanizate structure of silica-filled solution styrene-butadiene rubber compounds using a sulfide-silane coupling agent was studied. The vulcanizate structure according to sulfur variation was quantitatively analyzed using the swelling test and Flory-Rehner and Kraus equations. As the sulfur content increased, both FRI and the CCD increased, and it was confirmed that sulfur variation influenced the silica-rubber coupling efficiency through increased FRI. In addition, field emission scanning electron microscope images showed that increased FRI contributed to improvements in silica dispersion, abrasion resistance, and energy loss characteristics.
A sulfur copolymer with a pyrrole compound for the crosslinking of unsaturated elastomers

Abstract:Effective applications must be found for sulfur, a widely available and inexpensive element. Over the last decade, copolymers with unsaturated comonomers have been prepared via so-called inverse vulcanization. In this work, a sulfur copolymer with a circular and biosourced di-pyrrole compound was obtained for the first time and was used as the sole crosslinking agent of an unsaturated elastomer. Pyrrole compounds (PyCs) were synthesized via the Paal–Knorr reaction of 2,5-hexanedione (HD) and hexamethylenediamine (HMD) or ethylenediamine (EDM). The PyCs were obtained without using solvents or catalysts in high yield and with water as the only co-product. Poly(S- co -HMDP) and poly(S- co -EDP) copolymers were prepared under the typical conditions of inverse vulcanization. Throughout the entire synthetic pathway, the overall yield was up to 92% and the atom efficiency was up to 73%. The E -factor evaluated for organic compounds was almost null. The sulfur weight content in the copolymers ranged from 40% to 80% and the average number of sulfur atoms in the sequences ranged from 3 to 17. The copolymers were found to be amorphous with a glass transition temperature ranging from −2 to 38 °C, increasing with the content of the pyrrole ring. The number average molecular weight was found to be in the range from 1500 to 9000 g mol −1 . The molecular weight distribution was pretty narrow, with values lower than 2. NMR investigation suggested that the β position of the pyrrole ring reacted with sulfur atoms. A poly(S- co -HMDP) copolymer with an average sequence of 3 sulfur atoms was used as the sole crosslinking agent in a composite based on an unsaturated elastomer such as poly(styrene- co -butadiene) from anionic polymerization. More efficient crosslinking was obtained by promoting the ionic reaction of sulfur with elastomer chains by using 1,5-diazabicyclo(5.4.0)undec-7-ene. These results pave the way for the synthesis of a wide variety of sulfur copolymers with comonomers containing pyrrole rings for the sustainable crosslinking of elastomers, avoiding the use of oil-based accelerators.

Abstract:Elemental sulfur (S8) is produced in abundance during petroleum refinement, generating millions of tons of waste. Inverse vulcanization utilizes this waste as a feedstock to create new materials. Heating S8 above 159 °C initiates ring-opening, forming radicals that react with difunctional monomers to create polysulfides. High temperature requirements limit the types of monomers that can be incorporated by inverse vulcanization. However, cleaving the linear sulfur chains present in the polysulfides requires less energy. Here, poly(S–divinylbenzene) with varied sulfur contents has been synthesized to act as a prepolymer capable of radical formation at much lower temperatures (90 °C). Dynamic sulfur bonds initiate polymerization with a family of vinylic and allylic ethers. Terpolymers were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry to examine the impact on structure and physical properties. This method expands on inverse vulcanized polymers to create a mild, solvent-free route to polysulfide synthesis.

Abstract:Sulfur-containing dynamic polymers had attracted significant attention due to their unique chemical structures with high reversibility. Utilizating sulfur, an inexpensive industrial waste product, to synthesize dynamic polysulfide polymers through reverse vulcanization has been a notable approach. However, this method required high temperatures and resulted in the release of unpleasant oders. In this study, we presented a robust method for the preparation of sulfur-rich polymers with dynamic polysulfide bonds from elemental sulfur and inexpensive epoxide monomers via a one-pot strategy at the mild room temperature. Different types of polysulfide molecules and polymers were synthesized by reacting various epoxide compounds with sulfur, along with the investigation of their structures and dynamic behaviors. It was noteworthy that the obatined polymers prepared from m-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)-N,N-bis(2,3-epoxypropyl)aniline and elemental sulfur exhibit multiple dynamic behaviors, including polysulfide metathesis and polysulfide-thiol exchange, enabling their rapid stress relaxation, self-healing, reprocessing and degradable properties of the cross-linked polymer. More importantly, the hydroxyl groups at the side chains from epoxide ring opening exhibited potential transesterification. This work provided a facile strategy for designing dynamic sulfur-rich polymers via a mild synthesis route.

Abstract:The structural characteristics of the organic cross-linker greatly affect the potential infrared (IR) optics applications of sulfur polymers synthesized through the inverse vulcanization reaction. Unlike elemental sulfur, organic cross-linkers induce various absorptions in the IR region and leave organic moieties that affect the IR transmittance, even after inverse vulcanization. Most of the cyclic olefin cross-linkers [e.g., dicyclopentadiene (DCPD)] investigated so far are expected to produce side reactions and form byproducts during inverse vulcanization. The side reactions caused by differences in reactivity between the reaction sites can result in the deterioration of the optical properties of sulfur polymers. In this study, thiol groups were introduced as a cross-linker to effectively control the side reactions and byproducts that may occur in inverse vulcanization. The sulfur and thiol cross-linkers reacted rapidly and uniformly at all reaction sites to form sulfur polymers without unwanted side reactions. Optical windows prepared with the sulfur polymer exhibited enhanced IR transparency and achieved thermal imaging of the human body in the long-wave IR (LWIR) region. By design of a cross-linker for LWIR transparent sulfur polymers, these results provide a useful solution for IR optics applications.

Abstract:The preparation of high-sulfur content organosulfur polymers has generated considerable interest as an emerging area in polymer science that has been driven by advances in the inverse vulcanization polymerization of elemental sulfur with organic comonomers. While numerous new inverse vulcanized polysulfides have been made over the past decade, insights into the mechanism of inverse vulcanization and structural characterization of the high-sulfur-content copolymers remain limited in scope. Furthermore, the exploration of new molecular architectures for organic comonomer synthesis remains an important frontier to enhance the properties of these new polymeric materials. In the current report, the first detailed study on the synthesis and inverse vulcanization of polycyclic rigid comonomers derived from norbornadiene was conducted, affording a quantitative assessment of polymer microstructure for these organopolysulfides and insights into the inverse vulcanization polymerization mechanism for this class of monomers. In particular, a stereoselective synthesis of the endo-exo norbornadiene cyclopentadiene adduct (Stillene) was achieved, which enabled direct comparison with the known exo-exo norbornadiene dimer (NBD2) previously used for inverse vulcanization. Reductive degradation of these sulfur copolymers and detailed structural analysis of the recovered sulfurated organic fragments revealed that remarkable exo-stereospecificity was achieved in the inverse vulcanization of elemental sulfur with both these polycyclic dienyl comonomers, which correlated to the robust thermomechanical properties associated with organopolysulfides made from NBD2 previously. Melt processing and molding of these sulfur copolymers were conducted to fabricate free-standing plastic lenses for long-wave infrared thermal imaging.

Abstract:The development of sulfur-rich polymers derived from elementary sulfur provides an innovative approach to industrial waste valorization. Despite significant advancements in polymerization techniques and promising applications beyond traditional polymers, polysulfide networks are still primarily stabilized by diene crosslinkers, forming robust C–S bonds that hinder the degradation of sulfur-based polymers. In this study, the anionic ring-opening copolymerization of chemically homologous S8 and cyclic disulfides was explored to yield robust sulfur-rich copolymers with high molecular weight. The incorporation of polysulfide segments not only efficiently activated the crosslinked networks for excellent reprocessability and mechanical adaptability but also endowed the resulting copolymer with high optical transparency in the near-infrared region. More importantly, the dynamic disulfide crosslinking sites promoted the chemical closed-loop recyclability of the polysulfide networks via reversible S–S cleavage. This innovative inverse vulcanization strategy based on dynamic disulfide crosslinkers offers a promising pathway for the advanced applications and upcycling of high-performance sulfur-rich polymers.
