Abstract:Multiple studies reveal that most of Venus highlands exhibit anomalously high radar reflectivity and low radar emissivity relative to the lowlands. This phenomenon is thought to be the result of atmosphere-surface interactions in the highlands, due to lower temperatures. These reactions are a function of rock composition, atmospheric composition, and degree of weathering. We examine the Magellan radar emissivity, altimetry and SAR data for all major volcanoes and coronae on Venus. We characterize and classify edifices according to the pattern of the variation of radar emissivity with altitude. The volcanic highlands can be classified into 7 distinct patterns of emissivity that correspond to at least 3 discrete types of mineralogy based on the altitude (temperature) of the emissivity anomalies. The majority of emissivity anomalies support the hypothesis of a weathering phenomenon at high altitude (>6053 km), but we also find strong emissivity anomalies at lower altitudes that correspond spatially to individual lava flows, indicating variations in mineralogy within an evolving volcanic system. The emissivity signature of tallest volcanoes on Venus are consistent with the presence of ferroelectric minerals in their rocks, while volcanic edifices in western Ishtar Terra and eastern Aphrodite Terra are consistent with the presence of semiconductor minerals. Sapas Mons and Pavlova Corona are also consistent with ferroelectrics, but at a different Curie temperature than the other volcanoes in Atla Regio. The spatial distribution of radar emissivity classes correlates to different geologic settings indicating that different mantle source regions (deep/shallow plumes, and possible convergence zones) may contribute to differences in mineralogy for the studied edifices. Finally, we show that the emissivity signatures of Idunn, Maat and other volcanic edifices are consistent with relatively fresh and unweathered rocks, indicating recent or possibly current volcanism on Venus.
Possible Effects of Volcanic Eruptions on the Modern Atmosphere of Venus

Abstract:This work reviews possible signatures and potential detectability of present-day volcanically emitted material in the atmosphere of Venus. We first discuss the expected composition of volcanic gases at present time, addressing how this is related to mantle composition and atmospheric pressure. Sulfur dioxide, often used as a marker of volcanic activity in Earth's atmosphere, has been observed since late 1970s to exhibit variability at the Venus' cloud tops at time scales from hours to decades; however, this variability may be associated with solely atmospheric processes. Water vapor is identified as a particularly valuable tracer for volcanic plumes because it can be mapped from orbit at three different tropospheric altitude ranges, and because of its apparent low background variability. We note that volcanic gas plumes could be either enhanced or depleted in water vapor compared to the background atmosphere, depending on magmatic volatile composition. Non-gaseous components of volcanic plumes, such as ash grains and/or cloud aerosol particles, are another investigation target of orbital and in situ measurements. We discuss expectations of in situ and remote measurements of volcanic plumes in the atmosphere with particular focus on the upcoming DAVINCI, EnVision and VERITAS missions, as well as possible future missions.

Abstract:The surface of Venus has undergone substantial alterations due to volcanic activity throughout its geological history, and some volcanic features suggest that this activity persisted until as recently as 2.5 million years ago. Recent evidence of changes in the surface morphology of a volcanic vent has been interpreted as a potential indication of ongoing volcanic activity. To investigate more widespread alterations that have occurred over time in the planet's surface morphology, we compared radar images of the same regions observed from 1990 to 1992 with the Magellan spacecraft. We found variations in the radar backscatter from different volcanic-related flow features on the western flank of Sif Mons and in western Niobe Planitia. We suggest that these changes are most reasonably explained as evidence of new lava flows related to volcanic activities that took place during the Magellan spacecraft's mapping mission with its synthetic-aperture radar. This study provides further evidence in support of a currently geologically active Venus.

Now, an analysis of Magellan radar images of Venus acquired at different times provides indications of ongoing volcanic activity in two distinct areas. This evidence also suggests a planet more volcanically active than previously thought.

The Tectonics and Volcanism of Venus: New Modes Facilitated by Realistic Crustal Rheology and Intrusive Magmatism

Abstract:To explain Venus' young surface age and lack of plate tectonics, Venus' tectonic regime has often been proposed to be either an episodic-lid regime with global lithospheric overturns, or an equilibrium resurfacing regime with numerous volcanic and tectonic activities. Here, we use global 2-D thermochemical convection models with realistic parameters, including rheology (dislocation creep, diffusion creep, and plastic yielding), an experiment-based plagioclase (An$_{75}$) crustal rheology, and intrusive magmatism, to investigate the tectonics and mantle evolution of Venus. We find that surface tectonics is strongly affected by crustal rheology. With a ''weak'' plagioclase-rheology crust, models exhibit episodic overturns but with continuously high surface mobility and high distributed surface strain rates between overturns, leading to a new tectonic regime that we name ''deformable episodic lid''. On the other hand, olivine-crustal-rheology models exhibit either standard episodic-lid tectonics, i.e. with mobility that is high during overturns and near zero between overturns, or stagnant-lid tectonics, i.e. with near-zero mobility over the entire model time. Also, a combination of plagioclase crustal rheology and dislocation creep can weaken the lithosphere sufficiently to facilitate lithospheric overturns without applying plastic yielding. Internally, the composition-dependent density profile results in a ''basalt barrier'' at the mantle transition zone, which strongly affects Venus' mantle evolution. Only strong plumes can penetrate this basalt barrier and cause global lithospheric overturns. This basalt barrier also causes global internal episodic overturns that generate global volcanic resurfacing in stagnant-lid models, which suggests a new resurfacing mechanism (we name it ''stagnant episodic-volcanic-resurfacing'') that does not involve lithospheric overturns.

Abstract:Surface geologic features form a detailed record of Venus' evolution. Venus displays a profusion of volcanic and tectonics features, including both familiar and exotic forms. One challenge to assessing the role of these features in Venus' evolution is that there are too few impact craters to permit age dates for specific features or regions. Similarly, without surface water, erosion is limited and cannot be used to evaluate age. These same observations indicate Venus has, on average, a very young surface (150–1000 Ma), with the most recent surface deformation and volcanism largely preserved on the surface except where covered by limited impact ejecta. In contrast, most geologic activity on Mars, the Moon, and Mercury occurred in the 1st billion years. Earth's geologic processes are almost all a result of plate tectonics. Venus' lacks such a network of connected, large scale plates, leaving the nature of Venus' dominant geodynamic process up for debate. In this review article, we describe Venus' key volcanic and tectonic features, models for their origin, and possible links to evolution. We also present current knowledge of the composition and thickness of the crust, lithospheric thickness, and heat flow given their critical role in shaping surface geology and interior evolution. Given Venus' hot lithosphere, abundant activity and potential analogues of continents, roll-back subduction, and microplates, it may provide insights into early Earth, prior to the onset of true plate tectonics. We explore similarities and differences between Venus and the Proterozoic or Archean Earth. Finally, we describe the future measurements needed to advance our understanding of volcanism, tectonism, and the evolution of Venus.

Abstract:Abstract Venus' surface and interior dynamics remain largely unconstrained, due in great part to the major obstacles to exploration imposed by its 470°C, 90 bar surface conditions and its thick, opaque atmosphere. Flyby and orbiter‐based thermal emission data provide opportunities to characterize the surface composition of Venus. However, robust interpretations of such data depend on understanding interactions between the planet's surface basaltic rocks and its caustic carbon dioxide (CO 2 )‐dominant atmosphere, containing trace amounts of sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ). Several studies, using remote sensing, thermodynamic modeling, and laboratory experiments, have placed constraints on basaltic alteration mineralogy and rates. However, constraints on the effects of SO 2 ‐bearing reactions on basalts with diverse compositions remain incomplete. Here, we present new data from a series of gas‐solid reaction experiments, in which samples of two basalt compositions were reacted in an SO 2 ‐bearing CO 2 atmosphere, at relevant Venus temperatures, pressure, and oxygen fugacity. Reacted specimens were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy using sample cross‐sections produced with focused ion beam milling. Surface alteration products were characterized, and their abundances estimated; subsurface cation concentrations were mapped to show the depth of alteration. We demonstrate that the initial development of reaction products progresses rapidly over the course of 30‐day runs. Alkaline basalt samples are coated by Na‐sulfate (likely thenardite, Na 2 SO 4 ) and amorphous calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) alteration products, and tholeiitic basalt samples are primarily covered by anhydrite (CaSO 4 ), Fe‐oxide (Fe x O y : likely magnetite, Fe 3 O 4 ), and other minor phases. These mineralogies differ from previous experiments in CO 2 ‐only atmospheres.

Mantle convection, lithosphere evolution and resurfacing of Venus

Abstract:Venus is very similar to the Earth in size and orbit radius, but the current observations show that Venus is very different from the Earth in atmosphere, surface temperature and also in gravity and topographic features. For the solid part of the Venus, the most prominent characteristics include 1) there are some active volcanisms but no active plate tectonics, 2) an average surface age of similar to 500 +/- 200 Ma indicates that Venus has experienced rapid global resurfacing, and 3) the gravity and the topography are strongly correlated. In this paper, we first give a brief introduction of some previous works and then we focus on our recent studies on the dynamics of Venus that associated with these observational characteristics. The main contents of these studies include the present mantle convection mode of Venus, the effect of phase transition on Venusian resurfacing, the thickness of the Venusian crust, and the lithosphere evolution and resurfacing of Venus. The preliminary results and its implications are listed in the concluding remarks.

Abstract:We propose an abiotic geological mechanism that accounts for the abundance of phosphine detected by Greaves et al., 2020. We hypothesize that trace amounts of phosphides formed in the mantle would be brought to the surface by volcanism, and then subsequently ejected into the atmosphere, where they could react with water or sulfuric acid to form phosphine. To investigate the plausibility of this hypothesis, we carry out an order of magnitude calculation. We suggest that active volcanism today could produce a rate comparable to that required to produce the phosphide-source of the phosphine. Our hypothesis requires that Venus be currently experiencing a high rate of basaltic volcanism, one that is consistent with spacecraft observations and laboratory experiments.

Abstract:High rates of volcanic and tectonic activities are inferred from Venus's high surface temperature. The effects of volcanic effluents, gas and dust, on obscuration in the atmosphere are considered. The optical extinction due to particulate matter is estimated from assumed distributions as to particle size and altitude. As few as ten explosive eruptions per annum would cause significant absorption and scattering of visible light.

Abstract:Understanding crust–atmosphere interactions on Venus is fundamentally important to interpretations of Venus' surface spectroscopic data. Olivine, in basaltic crust, is oxidized under a heated CO2 atmosphere. However, the oxidation rates, product assemblages and spectral characteristics of olivine samples with different Fa# values remain largely unclear. Herein, we investigated the oxidation of olivine with different Fa# values (Fa09, Fa29 and Fa71) under CO2 atmosphere at 470 °C and 900 °C and characterized the oxidation products (both microscopically and macroscopically), conversion rates and VNIR spectra. The results showed that the oxidation of olivine produced magnesioferrite, magnetite, laihunite, hematite and maghemite at 470 °C and hematite, magnetite, magnesioferrite and amorphous SiO2 at 900 °C. Both high temperature and high Fa# values accelerated the oxidation rates. The production of oxide coatings on olivine grains (74 μm in size) was estimated to be completed within tens to hundreds of years at 470 °C in natural settings, with even shorter periods under higher temperatures. Thus, CO2 oxidation would quickly eliminate olivine spectral characteristics, and spectral parameters at 850 and 1020 nm, as well as other relevant spectral windows (considering shifts induced by the elevated temperature), could be used to trace olivine oxidation processes. This work presented a case study connecting microscopic features to spectral characteristics for Venus' surface–atmosphere interactions. Further studies considering more realistic Venus' surface–atmosphere conditions will be essential to better interpret the measured spectroscopic data and determine the origins of the high emissivity detected on elevated terrain on Venus.

Abstract:Abstract The crust of Venus is composed of the low lying volcanic planitiae and the elevated, deformed tesserae. It is thought that the tesserae may be composed of silicic igneous rocks and that it may resemble proto-continental crust. The initial development of terrestrial continental crust is likely due to melting and deformation of primitive mafic crust via mantle-plume upwelling and collisional plate processes. Unlike Earth, the lithosphere of Venus is not divided into plates and therefore evolved continental crust, if present, developed primarily by melting of pre-existing mafic crust. Here, we report the results of high pressure equilibrium partial melting experiments using a parental composition similar to the basalt measured at the Venera 14 landing site in order to determine if silicic melts can be generated. It was found that at pressures of 1.5 GPa and 2.0 GPa and temperatures of 1080 °C, 1090 °C, and 1285 °C that tonalitic and granodioritic melts can be generated. The experimental results indicate that silicic rocks may be able to form in the crust of Venus providing the thermal regime is suitable and that the lower crust is basaltic. The implication is that the older, thicker regions of Venusian crust may be partially composed of silicic igneous rocks.

Abstract:This work reviews the long-term evolution of the atmosphere of Venus, and modulation of its composition by interior/exterior cycling. The formation and evolution of Venus's atmosphere, leading to contemporary surface conditions, remain hotly debated topics, and involve questions that tie into many disciplines. We explore these various inter-related mechanisms which shaped the evolution of the atmosphere, starting with the volatile sources and sinks. Going from the deep interior to the top of the atmosphere, we describe volcanic outgassing, surface-atmosphere interactions, and atmosphere escape. Furthermore, we address more complex aspects of the history of Venus, including the role of Late Accretion impacts, how magnetic field generation is tied into long-term evolution, and the implications of geochemical and geodynamical feedback cycles for atmospheric evolution. We highlight plausible end-member evolutionary pathways that Venus could have followed, from accretion to its present-day state, based on modeling and observations. In a first scenario, the planet was desiccated by atmospheric escape during the magma ocean phase. In a second scenario, Venus could have harbored surface liquid water for long periods of time, until its temperate climate was destabilized and it entered a runaway greenhouse phase. In a third scenario, Venus's inefficient outgassing could have kept water inside the planet, where hydrogen was trapped in the core and the mantle was oxidized. We discuss existing evidence and future observations/missions required to refine our understanding of the planet's history and of the complex feedback cycles between the interior, surface, and atmosphere that have been operating in the past, present or future of Venus.

Heat loss and internal dynamics of Venus from global surface heat flow estimates

Abstract:The absence of plate tectonics and the young surface age (0.3-1 billion years) of Venus have led to diverse geodynamic models for Venus. The energetics of the Venusian interior drive these models; however, the lack of direct constraints on surface heat flow hampers their quantitative assessment. Here we present the first global heat flow map for Venus, obtained from an inversion of geophysical data, including crustal thickness, effective elastic thickness, and radioactive heat production. Heat flow on Venus is lower and less geographically structured than on Earth but with highs reaching values typical of magmatically active terrestrial areas. The obtained total heat loss is 11-14.5 TW, similar to estimates of the total radioactive heat production. Therefore, at present, Venus proportionally dissipates much less heat than Earth. Furthermore, the calculated crustal temperatures imply that crustal melting or eclogitization are not dominant in the Venusian crust.

Abstract:Venus's mantle convection model was studied in a three-dimensional spherical shell domain with depth- and temperature-dependent viscosity. Numerical results show that key observations of Venus including the number of major “hotspot” volcanic systems, spectral patterns of the surface topography and geoid at long- and intermediate-wavelengths can be explained in models that have a spinel-to-post-spinel endothermic phase change of −3.5MPa/K Clapeyron slope and averaged mantle viscosity of 2×1021Pas (i.e., convective Rayleigh number of 1.8×107). Our models with the endothermic phase change show relatively weak time-dependence, suggesting that the phase change may not be the primary cause for “catastrophic” resurfacing on Venus. Our calculations also show that Venus cannot have a weak asthenosphere that is similar to that on the Earth, in order to match the observations, thus supporting a key role of asthenosphere in producing plate tectonics.
Mapping Lava Flows on Venus Using SAR and InSAR: Hawaiʻi Case Study

Abstract:We explore the potential for repeat‐pass SAR Interferometry (InSAR) correlation to track volcanic activity on Venus' surface motivated by future SAR missions to Earth's sister planet. We use Hawai'i as a natural laboratory to test whether InSAR can detect lava flows assuming orbital and instrument parameters similar to that of a Venus mission. Hawai'i was chosen because lava flows are frequent, and well documented by the United States Geological Survey, and because Hawai'i is a SAR supersite, where space agencies have offered open radar data sets for analysis. These data sets have different wavelengths (L, C, and X bands), bandwidths, polarizations, look angles, and a variety of orbital baselines, giving opportunity to assess the suitability of parameters for detecting lava flows. We analyze data from ALOS‐2 (L‐band), Sentinel‐1 (C‐band), and COSMO‐SkyMed (X‐band) spanning 2018 and 2022. We perform SAR amplitude and InSAR correlation analysis over temporal baselines and perpendicular baselines similar to those of a Venus mission. Fresh lava flows create a sharp, noticeable decrease in InSAR correlation that persists indefinitely for images spanning the event. The same lava flows are not always visible in the corresponding amplitude images. Moreover, noticeable decorrelation persists in image pairs acquired months after the events due to post‐emplacement contraction of flows. Post‐emplacement effects are hypothesized to last longer on the Venusian surface, increasing the likelihood of detecting Venus lava flows using InSAR. We argue for further focus on repeat‐pass InSAR capabilities in upcoming Venus missions, to detect and quantify volcanic activity on Earth's hotter twin.

Constraints on the Production of Phosphine by Venusian Volcanoes

Abstract:The initial reports of the presence of phosphine in the cloud decks of Venus have led to the suggestion that volcanism is the source of phosphine, through volcanic phosphides ejected into the clouds. Here, we examine the idea that mantle plume volcanism, bringing material from the deep mantle to the surface, could generate observed amounts of phosphine through the interaction of explosively erupted phosphide with sulfuric acid clouds. The direct eruption of deep mantle phosphide is unphysical, but a shallower material could contain traces of phosphide, and could be erupted to the surface. The explosive eruption that efficiently transports material to the clouds would require ocean:magma interactions or the subduction of a hydrated oceanic crust, neither of which occur on modern Venus. The transport of the erupted material to altitudes coinciding with the observations of phosphine is consequently very inefficient. Using the model proposed by Truong and Lunine as a base case, we estimate that an eruption volume of at least 21,600 km3/year would be required to explain the presence of 1 ppb phosphine in the clouds. This is greater than any historical terrestrial eruption rate, and would have several detectable consequences for remote and in situ observations to confirm. More realistic lithospheric mineralogy, volcano mechanics or atmospheric photochemistry require even more volcanism.

Abstract:The Surface of Venus is covered with thousands of small (< 20 km in diameter) and large volcanoes (> 100 km in diameter) as well as other structures of magmatic or tectonic origin. Based on a recent catalogue of volcanic centers of Venus, the spatial distribution of volcanic edifices is examined, as well as their relationship with magmatic and tectonic structures. The results indicate that the areas of volcano concentration tend to be formed away from the zones of rifting. In addition, it is found that the zones of rifting are more closely related with places of relatively thicker crust. Based on the observed spatial relationships, a geodynamic model is proposed in which a hierarchy of mantle diapirs is responsible for the deformation of the upper layer of the planet, as well as for the occurrence of volcanism and other structures. Differences in the timing of arrival of those diapirs to the near-surface environment, as well as on the size of individual diapirs, create the various conditions required to produce the wide diversity of all the structures observed at the surface. Thus, instead of adopting a unique evolutionary path that is observed at different stages to explain the diversity of some features, as it has been done until now, a more integral time-dependent model is proposed here having the ability to explain the diversity of expressions of independent features, as well as the relationship between different types of volcano-magmatic-tectonic features in an integral form.

The impact of ultraviolet heating and cooling on the dynamics and observability of lava planet atmospheres

Abstract:Abstract Lava planets have non-global, condensible atmospheres similar to icy bodies within the solar system. Because they depend on interior dynamics, studying the atmospheres of lava planets can lead to understanding unique geological processes driven by their extreme environment. Models of lava planet atmospheres have thus far focused on either radiative transfer or hydrodynamics. In this study, we couple the two processes by introducing ultraviolet and infrared radiation to a turbulent boundary layer model. We also test the effect of different vertical temperature profiles on atmospheric dynamics. Results from the model show that UV radiation affects the atmosphere much more than IR. UV heating and cooling work together to produce a horizontally isothermal atmosphere away from the sub-stellar point regardless of the vertical temperature profile. We also find that stronger temperature inversions induce stronger winds and hence cool the atmosphere. Our simulated transmission spectra of the bound atmosphere show a strong SiO feature in the UV that would be challenging to observe in the planet’s transit spectrum due to the precision required. Our simulated emission spectra are more promising, with significant SiO spectral features at 4.5 and 9 μm that can be observed with the James Webb Space Telescope. Different vertical temperature profiles produce discernible dayside emission spectra, but not in the way one would expect.

Turning Earth into Venus: A Stochastic Model of Possible Evolutions of Terrestrial Topography

Abstract:Venus may have had both an Earth-like climate as well as extensive water oceans and active (or incipient) plate tectonics for an extended interval of its history. The topographical power spectrum of Venus provides important clues to the planet's past evolution. By drawing detailed contrast with the strong low-order odd-$l$ dominated global topography of Earth, we demonstrate that the relatively flat Venusian topography can be interpreted to have arisen from the transition from active terrestrial-like plate tectonics to the current stagnant lid configuration at a time $\tau = 544^{+886}_{-193}$ million years before present. This scenario is plausible if loss of oceans and the attendant transition to a CO$_2$-dominated atmosphere were accompanied by rapid continental-scale erosion, followed by gradual lava resurfacing at an outflow rate $\sim$ 1 km$^{3}$ yr$^{-1}$. We study Venus' proposed topographical relaxation with a global diffusion-like model that adopts terrestrial erosion rates scaled to account for the increased rainfall and temperatures that would accompany a planet-wide transition from an Earth-like climate to the runaway greenhouse climate that could ultimately yield present-day Venus, with an estimate of $5.1^{+1.8}_{-1.1}$ Myr if the global erosion operated as efficiently as that of a typical bedrock river basin on Earth.
