Abstract:Three organic dyes 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl)pyridines [2,6-(2,6-R2C6H2N=CMe)(2)]C5H3N (R = methyl, ethyl, isopropyl) (named DM, DE and DP, respectively) were synthesized and assembled onto nanocrystalline TiO2 film to prepare 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl)pyridine/N719 co-sensitized photoelectrodes for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSCs) applications, and their photoelectrochemical performances were studied. In each of the three composite electrodes, the aggregation of N719 was alleviated and its spectra response was enhanced by the 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl) pyridines in region of 400 to 750 nm, and the total resistance of DSSCs was decreased after co-sensitizing with 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl) pyridine, all of which facilitate to improve efficiency of DSSCs. The optimized cell which was co-sensitized with DM gave a short circuit current density of 16.57 mA cm(-2), an open circuit voltage of 0.72 V and a fill factor of 0.59 corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 7.00% under standard global AM1.5 solar irradiation conditions, which is 28.91% higher than that for DSSCs only sensitized by N719 (5.43%). The incident photo-to-current conversion efficiency, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, surface photovoltage spectroscopy and UV-visible adsorption spectra were used to analyze their photoelectrochemical performances, and X-ray single-crystal structural analysis was used to analyze the structures of 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl)pyridines.
Advanced Cd-Ii Complexes As High Efficiency Co-Sensitizers For Enhanced Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Performance

Abstract:This work reports on two new complexes with the general formula [Cd-3(IBA)(3)(Cl)(2)(HCOO)(H2O)](n) (1) and {[Cd-1.5(IBA)(3)(H2O)(6)]center dot 3.5H(2)O}(n) (2), which can be synthesized by the reaction of Cd-II with rigid linear ligand 4-HIBA containing imidazolyl and carboxylate functional groups [4-HIBA = 4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl) benzoic acid]. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses indicate that complex 1 is a 2D "wave-like" layer structure constructed from trinuclear units and complex 2 is just a mononuclear structure. Surprisingly, both complexes 1 and 2 appear as a 3D supramolecular network via intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. What's more, due to their strong UV-visible absorption, 1 and 2 can be employed as co-sensitizers in combination with N719 to enhance dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) performance. Both of them could overcome the deficiency of the ruthenium complex N719 absorption in the region of ultraviolet and blueviolet, and the charge collection efficiency is also improved when 1 and 2 are used as co-sensitizers, which are all in favor of enhancing the performance. The DSSC devices using co-sensitizers of 1/N719 and 2/N719 show an overall conversion efficiency of 8.27% and 7.73% with a short circuit current density of 17.48 mA cm(-2) and 17.39 mA cm(-2), and an open circuit voltage of 0.75 V and 0.74 V, respectively. The overall conversion efficiency is 27.23% and 18.92% higher than that of a device solely sensitized by N719 (6.50%). Consequently, the prepared complexes are high efficiency co-sensitizers for enhancing the performance of N719 sensitized solar cells.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach for enhancing the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) through the co-sensitization of cyanoacetamide-based dyes DY-1 and DY-2 with N3 dye. The synthesis and characterization of DY-1 and DY-2 co-sensitizers are described and their potential applications in photovoltaic devices are investigated. The absorption properties of DY-1 and DY-2 were analyzed, revealing their efficient light absorption in the visible range. The co-sensitization of DY-1-2 with N3 dye demonstrated a significant enhancement in photovoltaic efficiency, ranging from 7.40 % to 7.92 %. The reasons for this efficiency enhancement were thoroughly analyzed and attributed to several factors. First, the combination of DY-1-2 with the N3 dye led to a broader light absorption spectrum, enabling more efficient utilization of incident photons. Additionally, co-sensitization facilitates efficient charge separation and injection processes, contributing to improved photocurrent. The acid-base co-sensitization approach further enhances the overall efficiency by maximizing the charge transfer and coverage on the semiconductor surface. This study sheds light on the development of novel sensitizers to enhance the performance of DSSCs, and the findings contribute to the advancement of photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:Co-sensitization is an attractive approach to enhance the light-harvesting efficiency of a dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC), whereby two or more dyes having complementary absorption spectra are co-adsorbed within a DSSC. A new method of co-sensitizing simultaneously pyridyl- and carboxylic acid-based dyes was performed and proved to be a successful approach for increasing the photoconversion efficiency (PCE%) of a DSSC. Yellow and red pyridyl-based dyes (T181 and T202) were co-sensitized with a blue carboxylic acid-based dye (Dyenamo Blue, DB). The co-sensitized DSSCs showed profound performance enhancements with a cobalt tris(bipyridine) electrolyte system. Increases in the total cell efficiency of 45% and 16% were seen in the co-sensitized T181-DB and T202-DB cells when compared to the single dye-sensitized DB cell, respectively. Remarkable increases in photocurrent (J sc) and photovoltage (V oc) were seen in both co-sensitized cells. The higher V oc values were mainly due to the decrease in the electron recombination processes at the TiO2/cobalt electrolyte interface. The increase in dye coverage in the co-sensitized cells resulted in a blocking behavior at the TiO2/electrolyte interface and had positive effects on electron lifetime. In addition the higher J sc values were associated with the complementary absorption responses of T181 and T202 with DB as mirrored in the IPCE% spectra.

Abstract:In this research, we synthesized new organic dyes, called BS-1–8, based on acrylamide/2-pyridone for use in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These dyes were designed with a D-π-A configuration and underwent molecular engineering to fine-tune their spectral properties and energy levels. Through a comprehensive analysis combining experimental and theoretical approaches, we investigated various aspects of these dyes, including their optical, electrochemical, photovoltaic, geometrical, and electronic features. The newly developed dyes exhibited strong absorption in the UV–visible range, characterized by high molar extinction coefficients. Upon sensitization with BS-1–8, the efficiency of DSSCs ranged from 2.83 % to 5.01 %. Acrylamide-based sensitizers (BS-1–4) achieved efficiencies ranging from 3.82 % to 5.01 %, while 2-pyridone-based sensitizers (BS-5–8) scored between 2.83 % and 3.57 %. Notably, when co-sensitized with N719 at concentrations of 0.2–0.3 mM, the DSSCs showed a significant increase in power conversion efficiencies ( PCEs ) ranging from 7.85 % to 9.01 %, compared to 7.50 % for DSSCs sensitized with N719 alone. Specifically, the performance of 0.2 mM BS-4 was 20 % better than that of N719. This improvement in PCEs can be attributed to the enhanced Voc (open-circuit voltage) achieved through co-sensitization, highlighting the potential benefits of using sensitizers to develop more efficient DSSCs. The highest achieved PCE was 9.01 %, accompanied by a Jsc (short-circuit current density) of 20.07 mA.cm −2 and a Voc of 0.732 V for the mixed co-sensitizers (0.2 mM BS-4 + 0.2 mM N719). These findings indicate that the combination of co-sensitization is a promising strategy for developing efficient D-π-A-type sensitizers and evaluating DSSC performance. Additionally, the study of incident photon-to-current efficiency ( IPCE ) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) provided insights into the mechanisms contributing to these improvements. Overall, these results suggest that BS-1–8 sensitizers have significant potential for advancing the development of more efficient DSSCs.

Abstract:The photophysical and photochemical processes of the experimental dyes ZS11 and ZS12 containing phenyl-cyanoacrylic acid (PCA) and ethynyl-PCA (EPCA) group were studied by DFT and TD-DFT systems to develop their applications in solar cells. First, their geometry, absorption spectra, chemical reaction parameters, electron transfer and dye activity were systematically studied. The photoelectric conversion efficiency ( PCE ) was predicted, and it was found that the PCE of ZS12 (9.974 %) was higher than ZS11 (7.171 %), which was consistent with the experimental trend (the PCE of ZS12 is 10.4 ± 0.3 % and the PCE of ZS11 is 9.0 ± 0.3 %). Secondly, the dye was co-sensitized with the chlorophyll derivative CHL-1c, and the co-sensitization system's interaction force, excited state characteristics, electron transfer mechanism and electron transfer rates were studied. The results show that the J SC of all co-sensitive systems (the J SC of ZS12-CHL is 22.363 mA/cm 2 and the J SC of ZS11-CHL is 23.978 mA/cm 2 ) is significantly higher than that of monomers (the J SC of ZS12 is 16.112 mA/cm 2 and the J SC of ZS11 is 11.051 mA/cm 2 ). It can be inferred that the optoelectronic performance of co-sensitizing systems is better than that of monomers. This study demonstrates that the use of dye molecules co-sensitized with chlorophyll derivatives can enhance DSSC performance from multiple perspectives, providing insights for further improvements.

Abstract:Two new base dyes bearing pyridyl acceptor (Py-1 and Py-2) are synthesized, which are respectively co-sensitized with an acid dye containing cyanoacetic acceptor (NP-1), constructing the co-sensitized solar cells (co-DSSCs). The lightspot is that the carboxylic and pyridyl groups could anchor onto the Brønsted-acid and Lewis-acid sites of TiO2 surfaces, respectively. The research results show that the combination of these acid and base dyes is beneficial to suppress the competitive adsorption between dyes, thus increasing the dye coverage on TiO2 surfaces and decreasing the electron recombination, and further raising the photovoltage; moreover, their complementary spectral responses can significantly increase the photocurrent. Therefore, the co-DSSC based on (2:3) delivers the best photovoltaic performances in comparison to the DSSC based on NP-1, in which the photovoltaic efficiency is increased by 32.5% (from 4.0% to 5.3%). Furthermore, the photovoltaic performances under different irradiation and long-term stability measurements can provide a basis for application evaluation of co-DSSCs.

Abstract:Porphyrin dyes are outstanding photosensitizers. However, one of the limitations of using porphyrin dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) is their weak absorption in the 500–600 nm region. Co-sensitization approach with two complementary dyes is an approach to solve this problem. So, to enhance the DSSC performance by improving harvesting solar light, we have studied porphyrin dye (LD12) and an organic dye (D149) as the co-sensitizer. This co-sensitized LD12 + D149 device with complementary in their spectral responses shows the power conversion efficiency about 6.8%, which is higher compared with the individual LD12 and D149 solar cells. The obtained photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) by using this co-sensitized solar cell demonstrates a strong and broad spectral response. This improvement is due to increment of the dyes loading amounts, the fine-matched molecular structures and absorptions of both dyes as the co-sensitization system.Graphic abstractThe co-sensitized LD12 + D149-based DSSC with complementary in their spectral responses, increment of the dyes loading amounts and fine-matched molecular structures exhibited a significant enhancement in the short circuit current (Jsc) and finally the power conversion efficiency (6.8%) relative to the individual single-dye-based DSSC.

Abstract:Synthesis of novel thiazolidine co‐sensitizers CD‐1 and TD‐2 with carbazole and triphenylamine donor moieties. Co‐sensitizer TD‐2 exhibited a broader absorption spectrum, smaller optical energy gap, and higher HOMO energy level. DSSCs co‐sensitized with TD‐2 and N719 achieved the highest efficiency of 7.95%, with improved light harvesting. Theoretical modeling provided insights into charge transfer dynamics and electronic structures of co‐sensitizers. Co‐sensitization strategy enabled panchromatic light absorption and enhanced photovoltaic performance in DSSCs. Dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have garnered significant attention as a promising photovoltaic technology because of their low cost and simplicity. However, the development of efficient organic sensitizers remains a challenge. In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of two novel organic co‐sensitizers, CD‐1 and TD‐2, based on a thiazolidine core structure and the incorporation of carbazole and triphenylamine donor moieties, respectively. Co‐sensitizers were designed to leverage the strong electron‐donating abilities of these donors to facilitate efficient light‐harvesting and charge‐transfer processes. In‐depth analyses of the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties provided insights into the characteristics of TD‐2 compared with those of CD‐1. TD‐2 displayed a wider range of absorption wavelengths, a narrower energy gap (2.19 eV), and a higher energy level for its (HOMO) than that of CD‐1. These distinctions are attributed to the enhanced capacity of TD‐2 to donate electrons and the elongated π‐conjugation of the triphenylamine component. Upon sensitization, the TD‐2 scored efficiency reached 5.10% and co‐sensitized with N719 dye achieved the highest efficiency, reaching 7.95%. Both sensitizers increased the efficiency of N719 by co‐sensitization (TD‐2 + N719), with an efficiency higher than 15% compared with N719.

Theoretical Study of WS-9-Based Organic Sensitizers for Unusual Vis/NIR Absorption and Highly Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are the most promising low-cost photovoltaic devices. Whereas, the absorption bands of most organic sensitizers, the most vital component in DSSCs, are limited to a relatively narrow visible range. To obtain efficient sensitizer, a series of D-A-pi-A metal-free dyes have been designed based on one of the best sensitizers WS-9 by modifying auxiliary acceptor and characterized theoretically. The results illustrate that introduction of auxiliary heterocycle acceptor is revealed to very narrow band gap (HOMO-LUMO), leading to an obvious red-shifted broad near-infrared absorption band in the range of 750-1950 nm compared to WS-9 (536 nm). The critical parameters in close connection with the short-circuit current density (J(sc)), open circuit voltage (V-oc), including singlet excited state lifetime (tau), total dipole moments (mu(normal)), the conduction band of edge of the semiconductor substrate (Delta E-CB), and regeneration driving forces (Delta G(reg)) are superior to those of WS-9. Therefore, these novel sensitizers would be a promising candidate for improving the performance of the DSSCs.
High efficiency dye-sensitized solar cells with a novel two dimensional Cd-V-LDH photoanode

Abstract:The present study demonstrates a novel photoanode layer double hydroxide (LDH) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The search for a photoanode (PA) with low cost and high power conversion efficiency (PCE) has become one of the most significant challenges facing researchers. LDH has proven successful as a photocatalyst in various fields. In this paper, a novel Cd-V-LDH with a molar ratio of Cd:V = 1:1 was synthesized by the coprecipitation method and used as a novel PA in DSSC S . X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Nitrogen sorption analysis, UV–Vis absorption spectrum, Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were used to examine the produced Cd-V-LDH. Cd-V-LDH as PA, Eosin Y (EY) as a photosensitizer, LiI-I 2 as a liquid electrolyte, and g-C 3 N 4 (GN) as a photocathode (PC) are the component of DSSCs. The series cells of DSSCs were assembled and the available variables have been studied to achieve the best performance under normal conditions. These variables, e.g., concentration and pH of EY, active area of PA, and different types of PC, e.g., graphene oxide (GO), commercial carbon (CC), and (GN). The open circuit voltage (V OC ) and short circuit current density (J SC ) for the Cd-V-LDH/EY/LiI-I 2 /GN system were observed to be 705 mV and 12.40 mA/cm 2 , and has a PCE of 5.4% comparable to Cd-V-LDH/EY/LiI-I 2 /GO and Cd-V-LDH/EY/LiI-I 2 /CC, which have PCEs of 4.9% and 3.8%, respectively, in the identical testing conditions.

Abstract:The performance of a DSSC was enhanced when Z907, a ruthenium‐based dye, was utilized with CDIB as a co‐sensitizer. The photovoltaic performance of the co‐sensitized Z907 + CDIB device displayed improvements in VOC, JSC, and hence overall efficiency when compared to the individual CDIB and Z907 devices. Summary To investigate the photovoltaic capabilities as a sensitizer and co‐sensitizer for dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), a new metal‐free organic dye (CDIB) was synthesized. In addition, different concentrations of 1‐n‐hexyl‐3‐methylimidazolium iodide ionic liquid (IL) doped poly(vinylidene fluoride‐hexafluoropropylene) gel polymer electrolytes are prepared and the high conductive electrolyte is used to fabricate the devices. The device having CDIB sensitizer and IL‐15% electrolyte showed an efficiency of 1.86%. Further, the effect of CDIB co‐sensitization on Z907 is examined. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency of DSSC with co‐sensitized dye is raised by 23.29%, from 4.55 to 5.61%, when compared to DSSCs with individual dyes. This improvement is mostly due to an increase in a short‐circuit current density and open‐circuit voltage. Highlights Co‐sensitization is being used to enhance the performance of DSSCs. Poly(vinylidene fluoride‐hexafluoropropylene)‐based gel polymer electrolytes doped with different amounts of 1‐n‐hexyl‐3‐methylimidazolium iodide were prepared for improving the conductivity of electrolyte. A co‐sensitized DSSC has an efficiency of 5.61%. With co‐sensitization, both VOC and JSC increased significantly.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are a cost-effective and environmentally benign third-generation photovoltaic technology that is gaining prominence in the changing renewable energy sector. Our study presents the concept of co-sensitization, which involves the combination of TiO2QD with MWCNT/TiO2, in order to improve the efficiency of solar energy conversion greatly. The efficiency of these solar cells is highly dependent on the efficacy of the dye as a photosensitizer. The results indicate that DSSCs employing the co-sensitized approach with TiO2QD achieved an efficiency (η) of 0.331, an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.539 (V), a short circuit current density (Jsc) of 0.095 (mA/cm2), and a fill factor (FF) of 37 %. On the other hand, DSSCs utilizing the MWCNT/TiO2 photoanode demonstrated an efficiency (η) of 0.213 %, an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.509 (V), a short circuit current density (Jsc) of 0.076 (mA/cm2), and a fill factor (FF) of 17 %. In the ever-changing world of renewable energy, cutting-edge methods like co-sensitization could boost solar energy conversion technology efficiency and sustainability. Innovative methods like employing plant leaf dye as photosensitizers for DSSCs are eco-friendly and could cut production costs. Using natural dyes supports sustainable practices and makes solar energy production more affordable and accessible.

Abstract:Introducing electron-withdrawing groups and adding co-sensitizers into dye sensitizers are considered feasible strategies to improve the energy conversion efficiency (PCE) of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). However, the mechanisms by which these two strategies affect photovoltaic properties are not fully understood. In this paper, five photosensitizers were synthesized through simple steps. Based on ZS09, four A′–π–A dyes were constructed using electron-deficient pyrazine derivatives. The PCE evaluation value of ZS10-based DSSC is 5.28%, about 16% higher than that of ZS09-based DSSC. Undoubtedly, this dramatic improvement should be attributed to the role of auxiliary acceptors, which effectively facilitate the ICT transition by increasing the overlap of the frontier molecular orbitals, leading to an increase in light-harvesting efficiency. Furthermore, the co-sensitization of YD2 and ZS12 on the TiO2 photoanode achieved the best photovoltaic efficiency of 7.13%. With the help of the quantum chemical calculation method and experimental results, this study reveals the effects of auxiliary acceptors on electron distribution, excited state properties, and photovoltaic performance, which provides a new idea for designing high-performance DSSCs in the future.

Abstract:Two asymmetric DPP dyes with a D-pi-A structure are reported, where DPP is used as a bridge to connect the triphenylamine donor and cyanoacetic acid acceptor. The compact dyes exhibit high light absorption ability covering the whole visible spectral region. The most efficient cell exhibited a short-circuit current density of 17.72 mA cm(-2), an open-circuit voltage of 725 mV, and a fill factor of 74%, yielding a power conversion efficiency of 9.51% under standard test conditions (irradiation of 1000 W m(-2), air mass 1.5 G), which is the highest value reported for DPP-based DSCs employing an I (-)/I-3-redox couple. Furthermore, the DPP dyes show remarkable stability under long-term irradiation over 1000 h. Considering the facile synthesis and excellent stability, the DPP sensitizer would be a promising option for highly efficient DSCs. The results show that judicious molecular engineering is crucial for constructing highly efficient charge transfer sensitizers in DSCs.
Enhanced Efficiency of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells by Controlled Co-Adsorption Self-Assembly of Dyes

Abstract:Single dyes typically exhibit limited light absorption in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Thus, cosensitization using two or more dyes to enhance light-harvesting efficiency has been explored; however, the aggregation of dyes can adversely affect electron injection capabilities. This study focused on the design and synthesis of three dyes with a common carbazole donor for DSSCs: DZ102, TZ101, and JM102. JM102 broadens the absorption spectrum by replacing the benzoic acid electron acceptor of TZ101 with acetylenic benzoic acid. A cosensitized DSSC device based on CO-1 [DZ102:TZ101 = 1:1 (50 μM:50 μM)] achieved a short-circuit current density of 19.4 mA/cm2 and a power conversion efficiency of 10.9%. For the first time, the molecular interactions between the dyes in the photoanode were demonstrated using cyclic voltammetry, which revealed the presence of intermolecular forces. Adsorption kinetics further indicated that these forces promoted the self-assembly of dyes during adsorption, which resulted in a cosensitization adsorption amount greater than the sum of the individual dye adsorptions. This study provides novel insights into the selection of cosensitizing dyes for DSSCs.
Study of the microscopic mechanism of stepwise charge injection in co-sensitive DSSCS in the framework of D-PI-A dye and chlorophyll

Abstract:The newly synthesized dye molecules TY6 and CXC22 were selected to explain the influence of anthracene and acetylene groups on molecules' power conversion efficiency (PCE) at the microscopic level. The theoretical simulation was carried out for two molecules, including frontier molecular orbitals, absorption spectra, light absorption efficiency, intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), dye regeneration and I-V prediction etc. The results explain that for CXC22, adding an anthracene and acetylene group in the conjugate bridge greatly enhances the molecule's absorption wavelength and molar extinction coefficient; CXC22 also has significant advantages in the intramolecular charge transfer and comparatively better dye regeneration and electron injection. These parameters cause CXC22 to have a higher PCE. Subsequently, CXC22 and the chlorophyll molecule (CHL7) were selected for co-sensitization to regulate performance. The stable structure in the co-sensitization configuration was screened, and the absorption spectrum characteristics and charge transfer mechanisms were revealed for the co-sensitization system. The designed evaluation model predicted that the PCE of CO1 (the cosensitive system of CXC22 and TY6 in H-H configuration is referred to as CO1) could reach 16.78%. This work provides an idea for developing an efficient dye-sensitized solar cell system.

Abstract:This work presents a comprehensive investigation of a novel organic dye, N-1, as a sensitizer and co-sensitizer in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) co-sensitized with Ru (II)-based N3 and N719 metal dyes. These co-sensitizers contain a carbazole ring as a donor scaffold linked to an electron-withdrawing pyridyl acceptor. In this study, we demonstrate the significant impact of a base dye (N-1) containing a pyridine anchoring unit on the photovoltaic performance of the standard dyes N3 and N719. This strategy takes advantage of the capacity of the carboxylic and pyridine moieties to attach to the Brønsted-acidic and Lewis-acidic positions of TiO2 interfaces, thereby diminishing the competing adsorption of dyes and augmenting dye deposition on TiO2 surfaces. Consequently, this leads to a reduction in electron recombination and a boost in photovoltage. Additionally, the effect of sensitizer/co-sensitizer concentration on device performance was thoroughly examined. The results indicated that devices fabricated using the co-sensitizer N-1 with sensitizers N3 and N719 at all concentrations outperformed N3 and N719. Notably, the best photovoltaic performance was obtained for the co-sensitized device fabricated using 0.3 mM acid-base N-1 along with N3 sensitizer, displaying a power conversion efficiency of 10.18 % with a short-circuit current density of 19.12 mA.cm−2, open-circuit voltage of 750 mV, and fill factor of 71 %. These findings shed light on the development of new and efficient systems for DSSCs.
