Abstract:Digesting dendrites for stable Li‐metal anode is successfully realized by using a flexible superlithiophilic poly(vinylidene fluoride) and ZnCl2 electrospinning membrane as an interfacial protective layer. Li metal anode is considered as one of the most desirable candidates for next‐generation battery due to its lowest electrochemical potential and high theoretical capacity. However, undesirable dendrite growth severely exacerbates the interfacial stability, thus damaging battery performance and bringing safety concerns. Here, an efficient strategy is proposed to stabilize Li metal anode by digesting dendrites sprout using a 3D flexible superlithiophilic membrane consisting of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and ZnCl2 composite nanofibers (PZEM) as a protective layer. Both the experimental studies and theoretical calculations show the origin of superlithiophilicity ascribed to a strong interaction between ZnCl2 and PVDF to form the ZnF bonds. The multifield physics calculation implies effective removal of local dendrite hotspots by PZEM via a more homogeneous Li+ flux. The PZEM‐covered Li anode (PZEM@Li) exhibits superior Li deposition/stripping performance in a symmetric cell over 1100 cycles at a high current density of 5 mA cm−2. When paired with LiFePO4 (LFP), PZEM@Li|LFP full cell remains stable over 1000 cycles at 2 C with a degradation rate of 0.0083% per cycle. This work offers a new route for efficient protection of Li metal anode for practical applications.

Abstract:Lithium metal is considered as a potential anode for lithium batteries, but its commercialization process is hindered by several problems, including uncontrollable lithium dendrite growth, large volume expansion, low utilization of lithium and so on. To address these issues, in this work, lithiophilic silver layers with 80 nm thickness are coated on the commercial carbon cloth (CC) using thermal evaporation method to regulate Li growth during lithium plating process. We find that the uniformly distributed silver layers can successfully reduce lithium nucleation over-potential, thus inducing the homogeneous deposition of metal Li, supported by density functional theory calculation. Benefited from the as prepared lithiophilic Ag layers, the CC/Ag/Li anode with an ultrahigh areal capacity of 16 mAh cm(-2) is achieved adopting electrochemical deposition at 0.2 mA cm(-2) without the formation of lithium dendrites, which is confirmed by continuous detection using visual discrimination and scanning electron microscope observation. As a result, a stable dendrite-free CC/Ag/Li anode exhibits excellent electrochemical properties: (1) the assembled CC/Ag/Li symmetrical cell maintains a stable voltage hysteresis within 25 mV after cycling 750 hat a current density of 1 mA cm(-2); (2) The assembled CC/Ag/Li-LiFePO4 cell also demonstrates enhanced electrochemical behaviors in terms of rate performance and capacity retention; (3) When coupled with a carbon/sulfur cathode, the CC/Ag/Li anode also demonstrates excellent compatibility. The initial discharge capacity of the CC/Ag/Li-S cell is 899.3 mAh g(-1) at 0.2C, the reversible capacity retains a value of 587.7 mAh g(-1) after 400 cycles, corresponding to a capacity attenuation rate of 0.075% per cycle.

Abstract:Lithium metal is a promising candidate anode for next generation high energy density batteries. However, the Li dendrite growth results in electrode degradation and safety hazards, obstructing its practical applications. Herein, we propose a facile and effective method to build a robust ion conductive layer on the lithium metal surface. A thin coating layer containing nano-Si and poly(acrylic acid) on the surface of the conventional separator would react with lithium metal after adding electrolytes, forming a protective layer composed of the Li-Si alloy and LiPAA, which is a good Li-ion conductor. Both the Li-Li symmetric and full cells (Li-LiFePO4 and Li-S) using this modified separator exhibited much better cycle stability than those using an unmodified one. The dendrite suppression and electrochemical performance enhancement should be attributed to the unique interfacial structure modification for uniform and accelerated Li+ flux and rich lithium deposition sites. These findings suggest that the lithium interfacial properties have a huge effect on lithium stripping/plating and that the proposed strategy would provide new insights toward high energy lithium metal batteries.
Suppressing Dendrites via Interfacial Ionic Conductivity Regulation in Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Uncontrolled Li dendrite growth is a severe trial for the practical application of lithium metal batteries. Lithium metal surface membrane engineering has been proven to be a promising dendrite inhibition strategy. However, the research on the influence of the conductivity of protective membranes on the surface potential distribution of the lithium metal electrode is relatively scarce. The regulation of the potential distribution on the electrode surface is very important for dendrite inhibition. From the view of both cost effectiveness and protective effect, we prepared the ceramic–polymer composite protective membrane [Li7La3Zr1.7Ti0.3O12/poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF–HFP) (LLZTO/PH)] and focused on the influence of the membrane conductivity on the electrode interface potential distribution and the effect of dendrite inhibition. The optimal addition of 5 wt % LLZTO establishes a continuous low potential gradient with a uniform charge distribution from the electrolyte to the Li metal surface based on the simulations, thus suppressing the growth of the lithium dendrite. Impressively, excellent electrochemical performance with the stable cycling over 2000 h at 0.5 mA cm–2 and 900 h at 2 mA cm–2 (Li/Li symmetric cell) and high coulombic efficiency of 99% for about 470 cycles (Li/Cu cell) can be achieved by the protection of the LLZTO/PH composite membrane. Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal has been considered as a very promising anode material for next-generation batteries because of its low electronegativity (-3.04 V), low gravimetric density (0.53 g cc -1 ) and ultrahigh specific capacity (3860 mAh g -1 ). The recent simulations forecast that the rechargeable Li metal batteries (LMBs) coupled with the conventional transient metal oxide cathodes and the Li metal anode can deliver a high gravimetric energy density of up to 500 Wh kg -1 . However, significant challenges, including low Coulombic eﬃciency (CE), short cycle life, and safety concerns have plagued the practical applications of Li metal as the anode in recharge batteries. However, its poor cycling stability due to Li dendrite formation and excessive Li pulverization is the major hurdle for its practical applications. In this work, we present a silica (SiO 2 ) nanoparticle-dispersed colloidal electrolyte (NDCE) and its design principle for suppressing Li dendrite formation. SiO 2 nanoclusters over the percolated threshold of Li + ion transport play roles of enhancing the Li + transference number and increasing the Li + diffusivity in the vicinity of the Li plating substrate. NDCE enables less-dendritic Li plating by manipulating the nucleation-growth mode and extending Sand's time. Moreover, SiO 2 can interplay with the electrolyte at the Li-metal surface, and thus, it can modify the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) structure by enriching fluorinated compounds. The initial control of the Li plating morphology and SEI structure by NDCE leads to a more uniform and denser Li deposition upon subsequent cycling, resulting in three-fold enhancement of the cycle life. The efficacy of the NDCEs has been further demonstrated by the practical battery design featuring a commercial-level NMC cathode (4.2 mAh cm -2 ) and very thin Li metal (40 μm) anode.

Abstract:Lithium metal battery is strongly deemed as the most promising next-generation energy-storage devices due to its high theoretical energy density. However, uneven lithium deposition and infinite volume change are still the main challenges that significantly hinder their practical applications. Herein, a silicon nanoparticle-decorated carbon nanofibers () mat was explored as a novel lithiophilic and conductive interlayer for commercial Li foil. The interlayer with three-dimensional porous and conductive structure can act as a Li + redistributor and a lithiophilic host to regulate Li deposition behaviors and buffer the volume changes during the Li plating/stripping processes. The obtained anodes possess outstanding cycling stability under ultrahigh currents and capacities (e.g. 1800 cycles at 20 mA cm −2 /5 mAh cm −2 and 900 cycles at 80 mA cm −2 /40 mAh cm −2 ). This strategy is facile and efficient in inhibiting Li dendrite growth and can be extended to other alkali metal batteries.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is regarded as a "Holy Grail" anode for next-generation high-energy-density rechargeable batteries due to its high volumetric (2046 mA h cm(-3)) and gravimetric specific capacity (3862 mA h g(-1)) as well as the lowest reduction potential (-3.04 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). However, undesirable dendrite growth and repeated destruction/formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li metal anode during the long-term charging/discharging cycles have limited the practical applications of Li metal batteries. In this review, we summarize the strategies to restrain Li dendrites through electrolyte modification, multifunctional barriers, composite metallic lithium electrode, and 3D current collectors. The Li metal anode protection can be achieved by efficiently regulating the diffusion and distribution behavior of Li ions and electrons. The further exploration on rational integration of these strategies is highly expected to afford more fundamental understanding and engineering applications to practical Li metal batteries.

Abstract:Lithium reactivity with electrolytes leads to their continuous consumption and dendrite growth, which constitute major obstacles to harnessing the tremendous energy of lithium-metal anode in a reversible manner. Considerable attention has been focused on inhibiting dendrite via interface and electrolyte engineering, while admitting electrolyte-lithium metal reactivity as a thermodynamic inevitability. Here, we report the effective suppression of such reactivity through a nano-porous separator. Calculation assisted by diversified characterizations reveals that the separator partially desolvates Li+ in confinement created by its uniform nanopores, and deactivates solvents for electrochemical reduction before Li-0-deposition occurs. The consequence of such deactivation is realizing dendrite-free lithium-metal electrode, which even retaining its metallic lustre after long-term cycling in both Li-symmetric cell and high-voltage Li-metal battery with LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 as cathode. The discovery that a nano-structured separator alters both bulk and interfacial behaviors of electrolytes points us toward a new direction to harness lithium-metal as the most promising anode.

Abstract:A self-standing, flexible and lithium dendrite growth-suppressing composite gel polymer electrolyte membrane was designed for the use of room-temperature lithium ion batteries. The multi-functional composite semi-interpenetrating polymer network (referred to as “Cs-IPN”) electrolyte membrane was fabricated by combining a UV-cured ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate (ETPTA) macromer with alumina nanoparticles in the presence of liquid electrolyte and thermoplastic linear poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). The polymer electrolyte membrane exhibits a semi-interpenetrating polymer network structure and a higher room temperature ionic conductivity, which impart the electrolyte with a significant cycling (120 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles) and a remarkable rate (137 mAh g−1 at 0.1 °C, 130 mAh g−1 at 0.5 °C, 119 mAh g−1 at 1 °C and 100 mAh g−1 at 2 °C) performance in Li/LiFePO4 battery. More importantly, the polymer electrolyte possesses superior ability to inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites, which makes it promising for next generation lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:AbstractLithium (Li) metal is one of the most promising candidates for the anode in high‐energy‐density batteries. However, Li dendrite growth induces a significant safety concerns in these batteries. Here, a multifunctional separator through coating a thin electronic conductive film on one side of the conventional polymer separator facing the Li anode is proposed for the purpose of Li dendrite suppression and cycling stability improvement. The ultrathin Cu film on one side of the polyethylene support serves as an additional conducting agent to facilitate electrochemical stripping/deposition of Li metal with less accumulation of electrically isolated or “dead” Li. Furthermore, its electrically conductive nature guides the backside plating of Li metal and modulates the Li deposition morphology via dendrite merging. In addition, metallic Cu film coating can also improve thermal stability of the separator and enhance the safety of the batteries. Due to its unique beneficial features, this separator enables stable cycling of Li metal anode with enhanced Coulombic efficiency during extended cycles in Li metal batteries and increases the lifetime of Li metal anode by preventing short‐circuit failures even under extensive Li metal deposition.
The synergetic effect of lithium polysulfide and lithium nitrate to prevent lithium dendrite growth

Abstract:Lithium metal has shown great promise as an anode material for high-energy storage systems, owing to its high theoretical specific capacity and low negative electrochemical potential. Unfortunately, uncontrolled dendritic and mossy lithium growth, as well as electrolyte decomposition inherent in lithium metal-based batteries, cause safety issues and low Coulombic efficiency. Here we demonstrate that the growth of lithium dendrites can be suppressed by exploiting the reaction between lithium and lithium polysulfide, which has long been considered as a critical flaw in lithium–sulfur batteries. We show that a stable and uniform solid electrolyte interphase layer is formed due to a synergetic effect of both lithium polysulfide and lithium nitrate as additives in ether-based electrolyte, preventing dendrite growth and minimizing electrolyte decomposition. Our findings allow for re-evaluation of the reactions regarding lithium polysulfide, lithium nitrate and lithium metal, and provide insights into solving the problems associated with lithium metal anodes.

Abstract:Lithium metal battery has high theoretical specific capacity but suffers from dendrite growth that leads to low Columbic Efficiency (CE) and uncontrolled volume expansion during cycling. Here, we develop a method for fabrication of a nitrogen-doped carbon-coating as a lithophilic diffusion barrier layer, by carbonizing polydopamine (PDA) on three-dimensional (3D) porous stainless steel (called Nitrogen-doped carbon stainless steel, N-C-SS) mesh, and used it as the current collector for Li metal anode. With this layer, we observed significant suppression of Li dendrite formation during Li deposition. More specifically, the N-C-SS/Li anode in symmetric cells exhibit stable cycling for over 1800 h, 4 times longer than the bare Li electrode. Similarly, the fabricated half cells retain an average CE of 98.1% after cycling 400 times and show a low overpotential of 12 mV, while for fabricated full cells, they retain 98.6% of their initial capacity 140 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles at 3C. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation results show that N-C-SS surface enables higher diffusion barrier, with more negative Li adsorption energy than the untreated SS surface or Cu or Li substrate, which guides Li nucleation and suppresses dendrite growth on the barrier layer. An additional advantage of SS framework is that the 3D SS mesh skeleton distributes Li along with the mesh uniformly and provides ample voids to accommodate high Li loading (>10 mA h cm−2), while simultaneously minimizes local current density.

Abstract:A nanostructured lithium-metal anode employing an unstacked graphene "drum" and dual-salt electrolyte brings about a dendrite-free lithium depositing morphology. On the one hand, the unstacked graphene framework with ultrahigh specific surface area guarantees an ultralow local current density that prevents the growth of lithium dendrites. On the other hand, the stable, flexible, and compact solid electrolyte interphase layer induced by the dual-salt electrolyte protects the deposited lithium layers.

Abstract:The dendrite problem and low Coulombic efficiency of lithium anode have hindered its commercial application for long time. In this paper, the Polyethersulfone (PES) film is spin-coated to construct a composite lithium anode. With the polar functional groups of PES, the lithiophilicity of the anode is greatly improved. Non-conductive uniform structure with polar functional groups (O = S = O) constructed on the lithium metal anode can realize the redistribution of the lithium ion flow and reduce the probability of dendrite formation in the “hot spot” area. A uniform nano-columnar lithium layer can be obtained even in the high current density of 5 mA cm−2. Electrochemical interface studies have illustrated that PES film can increase the migration speed of lithium ion among the electrodes, increase the reduction reaction rate of lithium ion. Finite element simulation calculations show that the PES film can effectively reduce the concentration of lithium ion near the dendrite tip. In addition, with the Cu-PES structure modified by 3.3 mg mL−1 PES, the average Coulombic efficiency of half-cell reaches 90%, and the cell can run for 220 cycles stably which is three times than control group in 0.5 mA cm−2.

Abstract:Huge volume changes, uncontrolled side-reactions with electrolytes and irregular dendrite induced short-circuits have impeded practical application in rechargeable batteries based on metallic electrodes including lithium (Li), sodium (Na) and aluminum (Al). Separator with superior mechanical strength represent attractive alternatives to inhibit metal-dendrite growth while preventing capacity fading by stabilizing the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). However, the challenge of simultaneous retaining high thermal resistance and good electrolyte wettability still have been not overcome in commonly used separators. Here we show that these key properties can be acquired in a porous membrane fabricated from Kevlar microfiber-derived aramid nanofibers (ANFs) prepared in a facile and scalable vacuum filtration method. The obtained ANFs membrane (ANFM), which yields mechanically strong that are markedly effective in inhibit dendrite growth as well as provides good electrolyte wettability to ensure excellent electrochemistry performance. Benefitting from these merits, ANFM guarantee stable cycling of Li-ion or Na-ion rechargeable batteries paired with conventional intercalating cathodes (LiCoO4 and Na2Ti3O7) even at a high operated temperature (150 ℃ for Li-ion battery). Replacing polyolefins-based separator with an ANFM appear to offer a major step towards dendrite-free Li /Na batteries and potentially other metal-ion batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal is strongly regarded as a promising electrode material in next-generation rechargeable batteries due to its extremely high theoretical specific capacity and lowest reduction potential. However, the safety issue and short lifespan induced by uncontrolled dendrite growth have hindered the practical applications of lithium metal anodes. Hence, we propose a flexible anion-immobilized ceramic-polymer composite electrolyte to inhibit lithium dendrites and construct safe batteries. Anions in the composite electrolyte are tethered by a polymer matrix and ceramic fillers, inducing a uniform distribution of space charges and lithium ions that contributes to a dendrite-free lithium deposition. The dissociation of anions and lithium ions also helps to reduce the polymer crystallinity, rendering stable and fast transportation of lithium ions. Ceramic fillers in the electrolyte extend the electrochemically stable window to as wide as 5.5 V and provide a barrier to short circuiting for realizing safe batteries at elevated temperature. The anion-immobilized electrolyte can be applied in all-solid-state batteries and exhibits a small polarization of 15 mV. Cooperated with LiFePO4 and LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cathodes, the all-solid-state lithium metal batteries render excellent specific capacities of above 150 mAh⋅g-1 and well withstand mechanical bending. These results reveal a promising opportunity for safe and flexible next-generation lithium metal batteries.
Electrolyte Interphase Built from Anionic Covalent Organic Frameworks for Lithium Dendrite Suppression

Abstract:Abstract Lithium (Li) metal batteries hold considerable promise for numerous energy‐dense applications. However, the dendritic Li anode produced during Li + /Li deposition‐stripping endangers battery safety and shortens cycle lifespan. Herein, an electrolyte interphase built from 2D anionic covalent organic frameworks (ACOF) is coated on Li for dendrite suppression. The ACOF with Li + ‐affinity facilitates rapid and exclusive passage of Li‐ions from the electrolyte, yielding near‐unity Li + transference number (0.82) and ionic conductivity beyond 3.7 mS cm ‐1 at the interphase. Such high transport efficiency of Li‐ions can fundamentally circumvent the Li + deficiency that results in dendrite formation. Pairing the ACOF‐coated Li against a high‐voltage LiCoO 2 cathode (4.5 V) achieves exceptional cycle stability, mitigated polarization, as well as improved rate capability. Accordingly, this strategy vastly expands the pool of electrolyte interphases that can be used for coating and protecting Li anode.

Abstract:Lithium metal has emerged as a highly promising anode material for enhancing the energy density of secondary batteries, attributed to its high theoretical specific capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, safety concerns related to lithium dendrite-induced short circuits and suboptimal electrochemical performance have impeded the commercial viability of lithium metal batteries. Current research efforts primarily focus on altering the solvated structure of Li+ by modifying the current collector or introducing electrolyte additives to lower the nucleation barrier, expedite the desolvation process, and suppress the growth of lithium dendrites. Nevertheless, an integrated approach that combines the advantages of these two strategies remains elusive. In this study, we successfully employed metal-organic salt additives with lithophilic properties to accelerate the desolvation process, reduce the nucleation barrier of Li+, and modulate its solvated structure. This approach enhanced the inorganic compound content in the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on lithium foil surfaces, leading to stable Li+ deposition and stripping. Specifically, Li||Cu cells demonstrated excellent cycle life and Coulombic efficiency (97.28% and 98.59%, respectively) at 0.5 mA/cm2@0.5 mAh/cm2 and 1 mA/cm2@1 mAh/cm2 for 410 and 240 cycles, respectively. Li||Li symmetrical cells showed no short circuit at 1 mA/cm2@1 mAh/cm2 for 1150 h, and Li||LFP full cells retained 68.9% of their capacity (104.6 mAh/g) after 250 cycles at N/P (1.1:1.0) with a current density of 1 C.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have attracted wide attention as high-energy–density energy storage devices, but their practical applications are hindered due to capacity degradation and safety concerns arising from the growth of lithium (Li) dendrites. The interaction between the electrode and Li, encompassing both Li-ions and Li metal, display significant potential for solving Li-dendrite issues in LMBs. Here, a novel strategy is reported to thin hybrid coating (∼1.3 μm) comprising highly polar poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and branched poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) onto Cu foil, employed as a current collector for the Li metal anode. The branched PEI contains amine group side chains that effectively capture Li ions, thereby facilitating rapid Li-ion transfer kinetics. Moreover, the inclusion of PEI enhances the surface energy of the polymer coating, leading to a reduction in the nucleation radius of Li and the promotion of uniform Li deposition. When coupled with a LiFePO 4 (LFP) cathode, the Li-E40V@Cu||LFP full cell demonstrates an impressive initial capacity of 141.8 mA h g −1 , which remains at 118.1 mA h g −1 after 518 cycles at 1C (1C = 170 mA h g −1 ). This investigation presents a novel approach to alleviate the formation of dendrites on Li metal anodes.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal anode has attracted extensive research interest, while lithium dendrites and the resulting irreversible effects have restricted its development. In this study, a thin and dense solid electrolyte interface is constructed by introducing 3-(1-pyridinio)-1-propane sulfonate (PPS), a pyridine functional groups additive in DME/DOL based electrolyte to inhibit the lithium dendrite growth. The preferential decomposition of PPS has resulted in a reduction of gas generation. Subsequently, this process leads to forming of an N-rich solid electrolyte interface, which has been found to cause a decrease in polarization potential and change the behavior of lithium deposition from dendrites to a more cellular Li metal surface. As a result, our proposed electrolyte provides multiple functionalities, including remarkable rate capability, cyclic stability, and coulombic efficiency. Significantly, Li | Li symmetrical cells exhibited a stable cycle over 1200 h at a high current density and capacity of 5 mA cm −2 /15 mAh cm −2 . We are optimistic that our proposed method can be employed in future research to identify electrolytes appropriate for use in lithium metal anodes.
