Abstract:Hierarchical porous zeolitic imidazolate frameworks nanoparticles (ZIF-8 NPs) were synthesized at room temperature via a template-free approach under dynamic conditions (stirring) using water as a solvent. The ZIF-8 NPs were evaluated as adsorbents for rare earth elements (La3+, Sm3+ and Dy3+). Adsorption equilibrium was reached after 7h and high adsorption capacities were obtained for dysprosium and samarium (430.4 and 281.1 mg g(-1), respectively) and moderate adsorption capacity for lanthanum (28.8 mg g(-1)) at a pH of 7.0. The high adsorption capacitiese, as well as the high stability of ZIF-8 NPs, make the hierarchical ZIF-8 materials as an efficient adsorbent for the recovery of La3+, Sm3+ and Dy3+ from aqueous solution.
Simple preparation and efficient fluoride removal of La anchored Zr-based metal–organic framework adsorbent

Abstract:Excess fluoride in drinking water from groundwater can cause dental and skeletal fluorosis affecting millions of people worldwide. Adsorption is an appealing strategy for defluoridation due to its simple operation and environmental friendliness. However, conventional adsorbents exhibit low adsorption capacity because few exposed active sites. In this work, La anchored Zr-based metal-organic framework (La-UiO-66-(COOH) 2 ) adsorbent with dual-metal sites was designed and synthesized to remove fluoride effectively. The doping of La(III) using uncoordinated carboxyl group of UiO-66-(COOH) 2 increased the adsorption capacity. The morphology, composition, structure, surface area, and thermal stability of adsorbent were carefully characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX), fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The adsorbent is a polyhedral shape with aggregated and smaller crystalline particles and La is uniformly distributed over the adsorbent, favoring the effective adsorption of fluoride. La-UiO-66-(COOH) 2 showed excellent adsorption performance in a wide pH range of 3–9, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 57.23 mg g −1 . The fluoride removal rate of as-prepared adsorbent reached as high as 87 % within 5 min. The adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order equation model and the Freundlich isotherm model. Thermodynamic research indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. After four adsorption-desorption cycles, the fluoride removal rate of the adsorbent was still retained at 79.7%. The design of dual-metal site adsorbents provides a potential strategy for highly efficient removal of fluoride.

Abstract:A new three-dimensional porous metal-organic framework, {[NH2(CH3)(2)][Zn(atz)(ox)]center dot H2O}(n) (1) (Hatz = 5-amino-1H-tetrazole, H(2)ox = oxalic acid), has been solvothermally synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TG, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complex 1 exhibits an anionic framework that can be simplified as a rarely reported 4-connected lon network. Complex 1 could be utilized as a platform for emission tuning by doping different lanthanide ions. In addition, gas adsorption studies reveal that 1 has a high isosteric heat of CO2 and good adsorption selectivity for CO2 over CH4 and N-2.

Abstract:ZIF-8, one kind of representative of metal-organic frameworks, has received much attention in various applications, due to its exceptional properties. Herein we reported the facially- controllable synthesis and post-modification of ZIF-8 nanocrystals with good colloidal stability. The research results demonstrated that the size of ZIF-8 nanocrystals synthesized in water using ZnI2 as zinc source could be controlled by adjusting the molar ratio of ligand (Hmim) to metal ion (Zn2+). Additionally, the zinc salts and solvents played an important role in controlling the size and morphology of ZIF-8 nanocrystals. Furthermore, the ZIF-8 nanocrystals modified with PAA showed good colloidal stability in PBS.

Abstract:Excess fluoride in drinking water endangers the health of human being. Nowadays, a lot of efforts have been made for defluoridation to guarantee drinking water safety. Absorption is proved to be the safe, effective and environment friendly method to remove excess fluoride in water. In this work, a simple synthetic method was applied to successfully fabricate the zirconium based MOFs (metal organic frameworks), namely MOF 1. Following investigation showed that the as-synthetized material was highly stable and had significantly effective fluoride adsorption performance over a wide range of pH from 3 to 10. What's more, the maximum adsorption capacity (mg·g−1) for Langmuir isotherms is 204.08. To the best of our knowledge, it is the best performance so far for Zr based MOFs. Besides, the as-synthetized adsorbent was used for fluoride remove from real water sample. The result manifested that the adsorbent had effective fluoride adsorption on real ground water.

Abstract:The metal–organic frameworks have gained high reputation due to their porous structures, high stabilities, ultralow densities, devisable organic ligands, and large specific surface area in recent years. In this work, ZIF-8@silane-modified sepiolite hybrids with a core–shell structure were synthesized successfully via an in situ grown method. The hybrids were then introduced into epoxy to prepare composites. Results showed that the epoxy composites exhibited improved dielectric and thermal properties when the amount of the fillers was only 0.6 wt%. The dielectric constant was decreased by 0.66, the thermal degradation temperature was increased by 46.2 °C, and the glass transition temperature was increased by 8.5 °C.

Abstract:Nanoscale porous metal–organic frameworks and related materials have received considerable attention in recent years due to their widespread applications. However, the effective synthesis of magnetic core–shell MOFs still remains a significant challenge. In this article, a Fe3O4@ZIF-8 core–shell nanostructure with unique morphology, a large specific surface area, excellent thermal stability, and superparamagnetic properties is reported. Additionally, instead of using organic surfactants, a surfactant-free and facile synthesis route is successfully developed. The ZIF-8 shell thickness can be precisely controlled by altering the number of growth cycles. Fe3O4@ZIF-8 shows good adsorption properties for MB, with maximum adsorption capacity of 20.2 mg g−1.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been employed in many studies recently because of their stability, porosity, and high surface area. Although zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIF-8) have many advantages among MOFs, they have disadvantages such as low activity, conductivity, and reusability depending on the application. To overcome these drawbacks, Fe 3 O 4 and a mixture of Fe 3 O 4 and MnO 2 were added into the structure of ZIF-8. The SEM and STEM analysis of the synthesized materials showed that the polyhedral structure of ZIF-8 was hardly affected by the integration of metal oxides into the structure. FTIR and XPS results showed the presence of peaks arising from organic ligands and metal bonds with ZIF-8 in metal oxide/ZIF-8. Addition of Fe 3 O 4 and Fe 3 O 4 –MnO 2 to structure of ZIF-8 decreased the surface area of ZIF-8 with the formation of mesopores and accumulation of metal oxide particles in pores. When the synthesized metal oxide/ZIF-8 samples were tested in supercapacitor applications, MnO 2 /ZIF-8 electrode showed the highest specific capacitance. In addition, the presence of metal oxides in the ZIF-8 improved conductivity of the material. Based on the properties of metal oxide/ZIF-8 composites, the materials have also a potential for applications such as gas storage, adsorption, catalysts, and membranes.

Abstract:Here we describe the synthesis of a compositional series of metal-organic framework crystalline-inorganic glass composites (MOF-CIGCs) containing ZIF-8 and an inorganic phosphate glass, 20Na2O-10NaCl-70P2O5, to expand the library of host matrices for metal-organic frameworks. By careful selection of the inorganic glass component, a relatively high loading of ZIF-8 (70 wt%) was achieved, which is the active component of the composite. A Zn...O-P interfacial bond, previously identified in similar composites/hybrid blends, was suggested by analysis of the total scattering pair distribution function data. Additionally, CO2 and N2 sorption and variable-temperature PXRD experiments were performed to assess the composites' properties.

Abstract:The control of the structure, shape, and components of metal-organic frameworks, in which metal ions and organic ligands coordinate to form crystalline nanopore structures, plays an important role in the use of many electrochemical applications, such as energy storage, high-performance photovoltaic devices, and supercapacitors. In this study, systematic controls of synthesis variables were performed to control the morphology of ZIF-8 during the ZIF-L-to-ZIF-8 transformation of ZIF-L, which has the same building block as ZIF-8 but forms a two-dimensional structure. Furthermore, additional precursors or surfactants (Zn2+, 2mIm, and CTAB) were introduced during the transition to determine whether the alteration could be regulated. Lastly, the partial substitution insertion of a new organic precursor, 2abIm, during the ZIF-L-to-ZIF-8 transformation of ZIF-L was achieved, and modulation of the adsorption and pore characteristics (suppression of gate-opening properties of ZIF-8) has been confirmed.

Abstract:This study demonstrated a simple and innovative way of using the direct de novo synthesis to fabricate the mesoporous structure and diverse functionality of ZIF‐8 for environmental cleanup and gas storage applications. By introducing different ligands, we have developed a version of ZIF‐8 that could better capture carbon dioxide (CO2) and iodine. The ZIF‐8 was successfully designed to have the hierarchical and mesoporous structure with the functional groups of amine and thiol groups by adjusting the pKa values (from 8 to 12) of ligand instead of original ligand, 2‐methyl imidazole (Hmim, pKa~14.2). The modulation of ZIF‐8 particle size, porosity, and functional characteristics was achieved through varied ligands and their concentrations, streamlined into a single and room‐temperature synthesis condition. The resulting ZIF‐8 materials exhibit intricate hierarchical architectures and a high density of functional groups, significantly enhancing molecular diffusion and accessibility. Among the developed materials, ZIF‐8‐AS, featuring both amine and thiol groups, demonstrates the fastest adsorption kinetics and a twofold increase in iodine adsorption capacity (qm = 1101.5 mg·g−1) compared to ZIF‐8 (qm = 514.3 mg·g−1). Furthermore, the hierarchical mesoporosity of ZIF‐8‐A‐10.1 improves CO2 adsorption to 1.0 mmol·g−1 at 298 K, which is 1.3 times higher than that of the microporous ZIF‐8.

Combined Experimental and Theoretical Studies on Iodine Capture of Zr-based Metal-Organic Frameworks: Effect of N-functionalization and Adsorption Mechanism

Abstract:The potential leakage of nuclear waste, especially radioiodine, is a major safety concerning issue around the world. To remove radioiodine from nuclear waste efficiently, there is an urgent demand for adsorbents that possess both high stability and strong adsorption affinity for environmental remediation. Herein, two Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) and their N-functionalized analogues have been synthesized and researched for iodine adsorption in both vapours and solutions. It was found that Zr-MOFs with N-enriched ligands (e.g., pyridine and amino) exhibited the faster iodine adsorption rate and the higher iodine uptake amount (e.g., reaching adsorption equilibrium within 4 hours with the removal rate of above 85% for iodine solution adsorption) than their unfunctionalized counterparts (UiO-66 and UiO-67). The critical role played by N-enriched groups in enhancing iodine adsorption has been revealed through versatile model fittings, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy characterizations, as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Compared to those in amino-group, the N-atoms in pyridine-groups showed a deeper affinity towards iodine molecules. Remarkably, the N-enriched UiOs adsorbents also exhibited good recyclability, especially UiO-66-PYDC and UiO-67-NH2 could maintain the removal efficiency of 89.05% and 85.49% after four adsorption-desorption recycling tests. With the strong iodine uptake affinity and outstanding regeneration performance, this work has systematically investigated the impact of N-functionalization on the enhanced performance for iodine capture by using the N-enriched UiO MOFs as promising adsorbents, providing an insightful guideline into the physical chemistry of adsorption mechanism behind the radioiodine capture.

Enhanced fluoride remediation from aqueous solution by La-modified ZIF-8 hybrids

Abstract:To ensure water safety, fluoride elimination from aqueous environment is an urgent affair. In this study, a series of La-modified ZIF-8 (denoted as La-ZIF-8) hybrids with different contents of La were fabricated via a solvothermal reaction and used for fluoride recovery from wastewater. The structure and morphology of the fabricated La-ZIF-8 hybrid were confirmed by various techniques (SEM, XRD, BET, FTIR, and XPS). The specific surface area along with the pore volume of La-ZIF-8 hybrid was 121 m 2 g −1 and 0.816 cm 3 g −1 , respectively. The defluoridation performance of La-ZIF-8 under different conditions was assessed by static batch trials. The optimized La-ZIF-8 with a La/Zn molar ratio of 4:1 achieved the supreme defluoridation performance. The fluoride uptake was greatly enhanced from 1.85 mg g −1 for pure ZIF-8–49.5 mg g −1 for La-ZIF-8 at C 0 = 10 mg L −1 . The results revealed that La-ZIF-8 had a maximal fluoride uptake of 224.72–230.95 mg g −1 at 30–50 °C, pH 4, and C 0 = 80 mg L −1 . Adsorption of fluoride on La-ZIF-8 obeyed to the Langmuir isotherm ( R 2 > 0.99) and pseudo-second order model ( R 2 > 0.999), reflecting a single-layer chemical adsorption process. Δ H 0 (36.38 kJ mol −1 ) > 0, Δ S 0 (155.36 J mol −1 K −1 ) > 0, and Δ G 0 < 0 stated that the defluoridation by La-ZIF-8 is an endothermic nature, random state, highly feasible and spontaneous process. The co-existing of cations and anions effect inferred that Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , SO 4 2– , Cl – , and NO 3 – only had a trivial impact on fluoride removal performance, illustrating the high selectivity for F – . Abstract:The use of an appropriate preparation route is the key to immobilize active molecules into a host matrix with high loadings and stability. Herein, we demonstrate a simple and general strategy to immobilize ferrocene and its derivatives into ZIF-8 with high loadings of up to 4.3% Fe content. The unique host pore structure allows for the stabilization of guest molecules and effectively prevents their leaching. As a result, the obtained electrocatalysts exhibit competitive oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic performance. Optimized Fc-CHO/ZIF-8 requires only a low overpotential of 238 mV to achieve 10 mA cm −2 , along with a relatively small Tafel slope of 44.4 mV dec −1 . This performance is superior to that of commercial IrO 2 , suggesting its potential application in electrochemical energy conversion.

Abstract:The development of sustainable routes for the synthesis of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) is very important because of the wide applications of MOFs on a large scale in the fields of adsorption, separation, and catalysis. ZIF-8, a zinc-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF), was first prepared following a solvent-free method from zinc acetate and denoted as ZIF-8-DGUT. The synthesis was conducted with the addition of an appropriate amount of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) powder before fully grinding, and the synthesis was accomplished at mild temperature at 343 K for 24 h. This strategy provided a practical method for the production of ZIF materials.
High-performance lanthanum-based metal–organic framework with ligand tuning of the microstructures for removal of fluoride from water

Abstract:Excess fluoride in water poses a threat to ecology and human health, which has attracted global attention. In this study, a series of lanthanum-based metal–organic frameworks (La-MOFs) were synthesized by varying the organic ligands (i.e., terephthalic acid (BDC), trimesic acid (BTC), biphenyl-4,4-dicarboxylic acid (BPDC), 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (BHTA), and 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (PMA)) to control the microscopic structure of the MOFs and subsequently apply them for the removal of fluoride in water. The maximum capture capacities of La-BTC, La-BPDC, La-BHTA, La-PMA, and La-BDC at 298 K are 105.2, 125.9, 145.5, 158.9, and 171.7 mg g−1, respectively. The adsorption capacity is greater than most reported adsorbents. The adsorption isotherms of La-MOFs for fluoride are well fit to the Langmuir isotherm model. In addition, the adsorption kinetics of La-BTC, La-BPDC, La-BHTA, La-PMA, and La-BDC follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the kinetic rate-limiting step of adsorption is chemical adsorption. Thermodynamics revealed that temperature is favorable for the adsorption of fluoride. Meanwhile, La-BTC, La-BPDC, La-BHTA, La-PMA, and La-BDC are suitable for the removal of fluoride in a relatively wide pH range (4.0–9.0). Simultaneously, from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange are identified as the main action mechanisms for the adsorption of fluoride of La-MOFs. The prepared La-MOFs are used as efficient adsorbents for removal of fluoride in actual water, indicating that they have great potential in removing fluoride in real and complex environmental water. This work provides a new strategy for designing adsorbents with adjustable microstructure and expected function to effectively recover fluorosis in water.

Synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) using different solvents for lead and cadmium adsorption

Abstract:The current study is focused on the facile synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) at room temperature using three different solvents: ammonia solution (ZIF-8 (N)), aqueous solution (ZIF-8 (H)), and methanol (ZIF-8 (M)). The ZIF-8s produced have high crystallinity with different sizes and shapes. The morphology of ZIF-8 (H) resembled the mixture of cubic and the rhombic dodecahedron with truncated corners, whereas ZIF-8(M) occurred as the most stable rhombic dodecahedron, and ZIF-8(N) appeared as cubes with truncated corners. ZIF-8 (N) had the largest average particle size of 573 nm, followed by ZIF-8 (H) and ZIF-8 (M) with average sizes of 108 nm and 62 nm, respectively. ZIF-8 (N) showed a rapid Pb(II) and Cd(II) adsorption, within 15 min, while ZIF-8(H) achieved Pb(II) and Cd(II) equilibrium within 240 min, and 300 min for ZIF-8 (M). The adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) is best fitted with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption capacities for Pb(II) and Cd(II) sorption were 454.55 and 312.50 mg/g for ZIF-8 (H), 434.78 and 277.78 mg/g for ZIF-8 (M), respectively, and 476.19 and 263.16 mg/g for ZIF-8 (N), respectively. All of the prepared ZIF-8s showed a promising competency as adsorbents for the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from an aqueous solution.
