Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)/polymer composites combining advantages of both materials have received significant attention in the recent years. However, the complexity and inefficiency of the current fabrication approaches have hindered their further development. Herein, we demonstrate a facile one-pot solvent crystal template strategy to efficiently fabricate ZIF-8/polyurethane (PU) composites. This method eliminated the pre-synthesis and purification of MOFs, thus greatly simplifying the fabrication process. Moreover, the solvent crystal template introduced macropores in the polymer matrix, which generated a hierarchically porous structure to facilitate the molecular diffusion in the composite. The obtained ZIF-8/PU composites exhibited an accelerated dye adsorption rate constant of 1.89 x 10(-3) g mg(-1) min(-1), which was 2.6 times higher than that of MOF powders. The Langmuir isotherm study further confirmed favorable adsorption of dye molecules with a maximum adsorption capacity of 18.1 mg g(-1).
Metal-Organic Framework/PVDF Composite Membranes with High H2 Permselectivity Synthesized by Ammoniation.

Abstract:Herein we report a new ammoniation-based chemical modification strategy for synthesis of continuous and uniform metal-organic framework (MOF)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes with attractive performance. Ammoniation can promote the support PVDF membrane to produce amino groups, form a nanoparticle structure, and be well cross-linked; therefore, the high-density heterogeneous nucleation sites for MOFs growth were provided and the thermal stability and chemical resistance of composite membranes can be greatly improved. The high-quality layers of representative Cu-BTC and ZIF-8 were synthesized on the chemically modified PVDF membranes. By ammoniation, ZIF-7 can even be grown under harsh synthetic conditions such as in DMF precursor solutions at 403K. The fabricated MOF/PVDF composite membranes with excellent hollow fiber structures and enhanced structural stability exhibited high H-2 permselectivities for H-2/CO2 and H-2/N-2.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl alcohol)-sodium alginate composite hydrogels were first introduced to synthesize robust and well-intergrown zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)/polymer hollow fiber membranes. Through enough adsorption interaction with metal ions by chelation, sufficient nucleation sites for in situ metal-organic framework (MOF) preparation are provided. Using this method, we can not only easily prepare defect-free MOF membranes ignoring the complex modification process and seed deposition but also structurally fix crystalline MOF layers and greatly improve the stiffness and durability of MOF composite membranes. The strategy also gives the appropriate level of generality for synthesis of versatile dense MOF membranes on a variety of polymeric supports. The fabricated ZIF-8/polyethersulfone membrane presented remarkable gas separation performance with H2 permeance of as high as 9.66 × 10-7 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1 and a high H2/CO2 separation factor of up to 29.0.

Abstract:A new metal-organic framework/graphene oxide composite (IRMOF-3/GO) with high adsorption capacity of copper(II) (maximal adsorption amount = 254.14 mg/g at pH 5.0 and 25 degrees C) was prepared. Novel and highly efficient nanofiltration (NF) membrane can be facilely fabricated via surface decoration of IRMOF-3/GO onto polydopamine (PDA)-coated polysulfone (PSF) substrate. After decoration of IRMOF-3/GO, membrane surface potential increased from 6.7 to 13.1 mV at pH 5.0 and 25 C. Due to the adsorption effect of IRMOF-3/GO and the enhancement of membrane surface potential, the prepared NF membrane (the loading amount of IRMOF-3/GO is ca. 13.6 g/m(2)) exhibits a highly efficient rejection of copper(II). The copper(II) rejection reaches up to similar to 90%, while maintaining a relatively high flux of similar to 31 L/m(2)/h at the pressure of 0.7 MPa and pH 5.0. Moreover, the membrane also presents an outstanding stability throughout the 2000 min NF testing period. Thus, the newly developed NF membrane shows a promising potential for water cleaning. This work provides a worthy reference for designing highly efficient NF membranes modified by metal organic framework (MOP) relevant materials.

Abstract:The development of simple, versatile strategies for the synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived membranes are of increasing scientific interest, but challenges exist in understanding suitable fabrication mechanisms. Here we report a route for the complete transformation of a series of MOF membranes and particles, based on multivalent cation substitution. Through our approach, the effective pore size can be reduced through the immobilization of metal salt residues in the cavities, and appropriate MOF crystal facets can be exposed, to achieve competitive molecular sieving capabilities. The method can also be used more generally for the synthesis of a variety of MOF membranes and particles. Importantly, we design and synthesize promising MOF membranes candidates that are hard to achieve through conventional methods. For example, our CuBTC/MIL-100 membrane exhibits 89, 171, 241 and 336 times higher H2 permeance than that of CO2, O2, N2 and CH4, respectively.

Abstract:Compared to inorganic supports,polymeric supports can offer additional benefits,e.g.,easier processing and cheaper.However,the organic surface has weak adhesion to the zeolitic imidazolate frameworks(ZIFs)membrane layer,which usually requires complex surface modification or seeding.Herein,we demonstrate that a dual-layer asymmetric polymer support prepared by a simple spinning process is a good candidate for the preparation of ZIF-8 membrane.The inner layer of the support is an organic hol-low fiber(PES)with finger-like pores,and the outer layer is a ZnO-PES composite layer with finger-like pores also.The ZnO-PES composite layer is expected to contain uniform ZnO crystals in the polymer matrix,i.e.,the ZnO particles in the skin layer of the support are not easy to fall off.Under the induction of ZnO particles in the outer layers,continuous ZIF-8 membranes can be prepared by single in-situ crys-tallization,showing good adhesion to the supports.The obtained ZIF-8 membranes show a H2 permeance of 8.7×10-8 mol·m-2·s-1·Pa-1 with a H2/N2 ideal separation selectivity of 18.0.The design and prepa-ration of this dual-layer polymer support is expected to promote the large-scale application of MOF membranes on polymer supports.
Metal–organic framework channelled graphene composite membranes for H2/CO2 separation

Abstract:Graphene-based materials offer great potential in gas separation. However, it remains a challenge to control the interlayer structure to obtain membranes with high permeability. We describe a route for the fabrication of metal-organic framework (MOF) channelled graphene composite membranes with molecular sieving properties by in situ crystallization. Based on polar oxygen groups, extended interlayer spacing and electronegativity, MOF nanosheets can easily be impregnated into interlayers of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which strongly anchor and bolster up rGO by coordination bonds to form a porous architecture with uniform nanochannels. The H-2/CO2 selectivity of ZIF-8/rGO membranes reached about 26.4. Moreover, many other MOF materials were also inserted between rGO sheets to obtain membranes with both high selectivity (larger than 10.3) and superior permeability (in the range of 73-21 112 barrer).

Abstract:A non-activation (NA) ZnO array is directly grown on a PVDF hollow fiber membrane. The defect-free MOF layers can be synthesized easily on the NA-ZnO array without any activation procedure. The array and MOF layers are strongly adhered to the hollow fiber membrane. The prepared ZIF membranes exhibit excellent gas separation performances.

Aqueously Cathodic Deposition of ZIF‐8 Membranes for Superior Propylene/Propane Separation

Abstract:Electrochemical deposition has emerged as a novel approach to fabricate metal–organic framework (MOF) films. Here, for the first time, an aqueously cathodic deposition (ACD) approach is developed to fabricate ZIF‐8 type of MOF membranes without addition of any supporting electrolyte or modulator. The fabrication process uses 100% water as the sole solvent and a low‐defect density membrane is obtained in only 60 min under room temperature without any pre‐synthesis treatment. The membrane exhibits superior performance in C3H6/C3H8 separation with 182 GPU C3H6 permeance and 142 selectivity, making it sit at the upper bound of permeance versus selectivity graph, outperforming majority of the published data up to 2019. Notably, this approach uses an extremely low current density (0.13 mA cm−2) operated under an ultrafacile apparatus set‐up, enabling an attractive way for environmentally friendly, energy efficient, and easily scalable MOF membrane fabrications. This work demonstrates a great potential of aqueously electrochemical deposition of MOF membrane in the future research.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), consisting of inorganic nodes coordinated by organic ligands, have received tremendous attention in the past decades due to their high surface area, high porosity, designable pore-aperture shape/size, and tunable building units (including metal centers and functional ligands). For most of their applications, such as separation, catalysis, sensors, and energy storage/conversion devices, MOFs in the form of films/membranes are desired. Anodic electrodeposition is a promising and cost-effective method to in-situ prepare metal-organic framework (MOF) films on metal substrates. However, the anodic synthesis of continuous zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) films, an important subclass of MOF materials, has been proved challenging. Here, we report a facile anodic deposition method that enables the ultra-fast preparation of uniform and continuous ZIF-8 films with tunable thickness from the aqueous solution at room temperature by using the ammonia hydroxide-assisted deprotonation strategy (AHADS). The growth rate of the MOF films is flexibly controlled by the applied current densities, the concentration of the linkers, and the amount of added ammonia hydroxide. The roll-to-roll deposition of the ZIF-8 films on the zinc foils shows the possibility of this method for large-scale industrial synthesis. The control experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the formation of Zn(NH 3 ) 4 2+ complex by adding excessive ammonia hydroxide is crucial to promote the coordination of 2-Methylimidazole (Hmim) with Zn 2+ . Afterward, the Zn 2+ cation attracts electrons of Hmim and thus weakens the N-H bond, which decreases the free energy for the deprotonation of Hmim. As a result, the ZIF-8 films can be aqueously deposited at low pH under room temperature. Various pure ZIF films (ZIF-4, ZIF-7, and ZIF-67) with different metal nodes or organic linkers were successfully deposited via this strategy. In addition, ZIF-8 films deposited on the zinc foil show ability to decrease the overpotential for the zinc plating and stripping, suggesting its possibility for use in reversible zinc metal batteries. This work broadens the applicability of anodic deposition and indicates the potential applications of metal-supported MOF films in energy storage and conversion fields

Abstract:Interconnected hollow metal–organic framework (MOF) network (GO@HZIF-8) was designed as an efficient proton transfer accelerator in Nafion membrane. GO@HZIF-8 was constructed by in situ synthesis of ZIF-8 onto graphene oxide (GO) and succedent etching with tannic acid (TA). The hollow construction and surface TA functionalization of hollow ZIF-8 (HZIF-8) bestowed composite membrane with superior water retention. This was highly beneficial to the rapid proton transfer. Besides, the hollow construction could effectively reduce the proton transfer resistance onto GO@HZIF-8. More importantly, the interconnective architecture between HZIF-8 by the tethering function of GO and the interfacial hydrogen bond interaction between GO@HZIF-8 and Nafion resulted in connective proton transfer routes at GO@HZIF-8 surfaces and GO@HZIF-8/Nafion interfaces. These dramatically accelerated the proton transfer of GO@HZIF-8/Nafion composite membrane, enabling a considerable proton conductivity (PC) of 0.301 S cm −1 under 90 °C, 95 % RH, ∼1.33-fold greater than that of the pure Nafion membrane (RN). Moreover, the composite membrane exhibited a peak power density of 45.8 mW cm −2 , ∼1.22-fold higher than that of RN. These results menifest that constructing hollow MOF network possesses grand prospect in the construction of high performance proton exchange membranes (PEMs).

Abstract:Developing highly uniform and compact metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) membranes grown on flexible substrate such as cloth for highly efficient heavy metal removal is an appealing yet challenging task. Herein, we demonstrate a facile route to rapidly in situ synthesize Zn/Co-ZIF crystals onto cloth to form robust and compact MOF membranes at room temperature. Carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC) is introduced to act as a macromolecule bridge to promote the chemical surface attachment of Zn/Co-Zeolite Imidazolate Frameworks (Zn/Co-ZIF) crystals while simultaneously impeding solution-phase crystal agglomeration. SEM, XRD and FT-IR spectra were used to characterize the CMC-MOF/Cloth composite membranes. Benefiting from the intrinsic properties of Zn/Co-ZIF, the CMC-MOF/Cloth shows remarkable selectivity and excellent adsorption capacity (862.44 mg g(-1)) toward Pb(II). Detailed adsorption behaviour and mechanism are revealed by batch sorption runs with Pb(II) and a series of structural characterizations, respectively. In addition, the CMC-MOF/Cloth composite membranes can rapidly decontaminate the concentration of Pb(II) with good removal efficiency using a filtration apparatus, as well as exhibit splendid reusability for multiple regeneration cycles, which demonstrate the CMC-MOF/Cloth composite membranes, being as an efficient, low-cost, easy-obtained, and environmental-friendly MOF-based membranes, possesses great potential for the removal of Pb(II) in water purification.
Porous and Flexible Membrane Derived from ZIF-8-decorated Hyphae for Outstanding Adsorption of Pb2+ Ion.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based membranes with superior mechanical properties are of particular interest in purification, separation, and catalysis. Nevertheless, their fabrication still remains a grand challenge. Here, fungus hyphae (Mucor) were used as a robust scaffold to load the MOFs and induced the formation of porous and flexible membranes. ZIF-8 was used as a representative of MOFs. The ZIF8@Mucor membrane was formed by the in-situ growth of ZIF-8 on hyphae and then a vacuum filtration of the ZIF-8/hyphae composite. ZIF-8 was effectively dispersed on the ZIF-8@Mucor membrane, and the shear modulus of ZIF-8@Mucor-3 was 864 MPa by calculation. The ZIF-8@Mucor membrane exhibited promising properties for adsorption application to remove the highly toxic Pb2+. The adsorption capacity of this membrane was as high as 1443.29 mg/g. Results from dynamic adsorption indicated that the penetration concentration of Pb2+ ions was less than 5% of the original level before 80 min whereas after 160 min, penetration concentration of Pb2+ ions was more than 90%. This study would open a new way of how to synthesize composite MOFs/bacterial membranes for energy and environment purposes. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Highly cation permselective metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes are desirable for the extraction of valuable metal cations. However, fabrication of defect-free and stable permselective MOF membranes is technically challenging, owing to their arduous self-assembly and poor water resistance, respectively. A simple and readily scalable method has been developed for the controlled in situ smart growth of UiO-66-NH2 into leaf-like nanostructures with tunable density of the leaves and the surface layer thickness. The self-assembly approach reproducibly fabricates seamless, ultrathin (<500 nm) UiO-66-NH2 membranes at the surface of anodic aluminum oxide. The membranes contain nanosized interstices among the MOF leaves, which enable maximum admission of ions within the membrane, and angstrom-sized inherent pores in every single UiO-66-NH2 crystal, which efficiently regulate the cation permselectivity. Consequently, the highest ever reported cation separations (Na+/Mg2+>200 and Li+/Mg2+>60) and excellent membrane stability during five sequential electrodialysis cycles are achieved. These characteristics position the fabricated MOF membranes as potential candidates for efficient extraction of pure lithium and sodium ions from salt lakes and seawater, respectively.

Abstract:Ion sieving is essential for biological systems and membrane-based applications. At present, metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes are of great interest for use in ion separation, but it remains a great challenge to design high quality MOF membranes with a simple preparation process and desirable ion selectivity. Herein we fabricate a MOF composite membrane, containing highly penetrated ZIF-8 channels. The ZIF-8 channels are the dominant pathways for ion transport and display a good Li+/Mg2+ sieving performance (Li+/Mg2+ = 6.1). The simulation reveals that the Li+/Mg2+ selectivity is associated with the significant disparity of transport energy barrier between them, which is caused by the different extent of ion dehydration in angstrom-scale ZIF-8 channels. This work provides an effective strategy to develop ionic sieving membranes based on penetrating MOF channels for lithium extraction.

Abstract:A metal organic framework (MOF) derivative composite material is synthesized, using ZIF-8 as a precursor. Benefiting from the uniform metal sites and hierarchical pore structure, the composite exhibited an excellent adsorption performance for formaldehyde.
