Abstract:Development of well-designed adsorption materials for the effective and specific purification of hemoglobin (Hb) from complex samples for disease diagnosis is still highly required. Herein, inspired by the concept of roughness-enhanced protein adhesion, a surface rough Cu-based metal-organic frameworks metal affinity nanomaterial composed of Cu2+ and 2-methylimidazole (denoted as Cu-MOF) were prepared by a simple method, and used for Hb enrichment. Due to the high density of Cu2+ and rough surface of Cu-MOF, Cu-MOF exhibits higher adsorption capacity for bovine hemoglobin (BHb) than the other histidine (His)-rich proteins which contain fewer surface-exposed His residues. The maximum binding capacity Cu-MOF to BHb was up to 4161.7 mg g-1. Meanwhile, Cu-MOF has the characteristics of fast adsorption rate (within 60 min), well-selectivity and excellent recyclability (in 5 cycles).In addition, Cu-MOF was able to specifically bind with BHb in bovine blood samples. Therefore, this surface rough Cu-MOF can be used as a potential adsorbent for high-efficiency separation of Hb, which indicate its potential application in further analysis of complex biological sample.

Abstract:Rational bottom-up construction of two-dimensional (2D) covalent or noncovalent organic materials with precise structural control at the atomic or molecular level remains a challenge. The design and synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on new building blocks is of great significance in achieving new types of 2D monolayer MOF films. Here, we demonstrate that a complexation between copper(II) ions and tri(β-diketone) ligands yields a novel 2D MOF structure, either in the form of a powder or as a monolayer film. It has been characterized by Fourier transform infrared, Raman, ultraviolet-visible, X-ray photoelectron, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies. Selected area electron diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction results show that the MOF is crystalline and has a hexagonal structure. A MOF-based membrane has been prepared by vacuum filtration of an aqueous dispersion of the MOF powder onto a porous Anodisc filter having pore size 0.02 μm. The porous MOF membrane filters gold nanoparticles with a cutoff of ∼2.4 nm.
Facile Conversion of Hydroxy Double Salts to Metal-Organic Frameworks Using Metal Oxide Particles and Atomic Layer Deposition Thin-Film Templates

Abstract:Rapid room-temperature synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highly desired for industrial implementation and commercialization. Here we find that a (Zn,Cu) hydroxy double salt (HDS) intermediate formed in situ from ZnO particles or thin films enables rapid growth (<1 min) of HKUST-1 (Cu3(BTC)2) at room temperature. The space-time-yield reaches >3 × 10(4) kg·m(-3)·d(-1), at least 1 order of magnitude greater than any prior report. The high anion exchange rate of (Zn,Cu) hydroxy nitrate HDS drives the ultrafast MOF formation. Similarly, we obtained Cu-BDC, ZIF-8, and IRMOF-3 structures from HDSs, demonstrating synthetic generality. Using ZnO thin films deposited via atomic layer deposition, MOF patterns are obtained on pre-patterned surfaces, and dense HKUST-1 coatings are grown onto various form factors, including polymer spheres, silicon wafers, and fibers. Breakthrough tests show that the MOF-functionalized fibers have high adsorption capacity for toxic gases. This rapid synthesis route is also promising for new MOF-based composite materials and applications.

Abstract:A novel Zn-based metal organic framework (MOF) was synthesized from the mixed ligands, 3,3',5,5'-azoxybenzenetetracarboxylic acid (H(4)AOBTC) and 1,4-bis(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)benzene (phenDIB) ligand. The crystal structure of the complex exhibits an interpenetrated three-dimensional framework that can be simplified as a (4,4)-connected 2-nodal bbf net. This MOF displays extraordinary thermostability in boiling water for 12 h and chemical stability in a wide pH range of 2-13. The most intriguing feature is that it can successfully separate cationic dyes from mixed dye molecules in aqueous solution with high effectivity and selectivity, even for rhodamine B molecule with a large size. Furthermore, this material is reusable, and the adsorbed dye molecules can be released and recovered completely. It is very important for the practical application from a view of environmental protection and resource recycling.

Abstract:In this study, we present a facile strategy to prepare flower-like molecularly imprinted polymer (CuS/MIPs) for highly specific separation of hemoglobin (Hb) under neutral conditions. Cu 2+ were first grafted on the surface of polydopamine-modified flower-like hollow CuS. Then, template proteins were immobilized on the Cu 2+ -modified CuS through coordination interaction. Subsequently, an imprinted layer was formed using acrylamide (AM) and 4-styrene sulfonic acid sodium salt (SSS) as functional monomers. After the template removal process, the cavities that can specific bind Hb were obtained. The effects of metal ions, functional monomers, pH on the adsorption capacity of the CuS/MIPs were investigated. Benefiting from the combination of multiple binding and imprinting effects, the CuS/MIPs not only exhibited large adsorption capacity (182.74 mg/g) and fast adsorption kinetics (60 min) toward template protein, but also showed satisfactory reusability and selectivity. Meanwhile, the CuS/MIPs could selectively capture Hb from bovine serum sample, demonstrating that the CuS/MIPs will be an auspicious candidate for protein separation.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of important porous, crystalline materials composed of metal ions (clusters) and organic ligands. Owing to the unique redox chemistry, photochemical and electrical property, and catalytic activity of Cu2+/+, copper-based MOFs (Cu-MOFs) have been recently and extensively explored in various biomedical fields. In this review, we first make a brief introduction to the synthesis of Cu-MOFs and their composites, and highlight the recent synthetic strategies of two most studied representatives, three-dimensional HKUST-1 and two-dimensional Cu-TCPP. The recent advances of Cu-MOFs in the applications of cancer treatment, bacterial inhibition, biosensing, biocatalysis, and wound healing are summarized and discussed. Furthermore, we propose a prospect of the future development of Cu-MOFs in biomedical fields and beyond.

Abstract:The development of metal organic frameworks (MOFs)-based composites is a research topic of high importance because these composites have great potential for wide utilization in energy transfer and environment protection. Herein, a series of CuS@NOTT-101 composites have been successfully fabricated through a convenient MOFs-templated in situ vulcanization strategy. Highly dispersed ultrafine CuS particles evenly embedded on the surface or within the pore structure of the resulting composite frameworks, which is beneficial for introducing hierarchical architecture and exclusive active sites. Remarkably, the optimal composite possesses the highest adsorption capacity of 500 mg g(-1) for RhB 6G at a low concentration (30 mg/L) among the previously reported MOFs/MOF-based composites and reveals an outstanding performance toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with a small Tafel slope of 78 mV dec(-1) as well as good cycling stability over 100 h. Given the established structural and compositional designability of MOFs, these results herald the appearance of multifunctional composites whose location of active sites and hierarchical structure are precisely controlled, at the microscale level.

Abstract:The crystal structure of Cd-MOF-74 was obtained for the first time that possesses high sensitivity for the detection of copper ions from water and simulated biological fluids based on changes in luminescent intensity. Furthermore, Cd-MOF-74 could selectively remove Cu2+ from simulated biological fluids that contain Mg2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Fe2+, Ni2+, Na+, and K+. The adsorption capacity of this adsorbent for copper ions reached 189.5 mg g-1 and it quickly adsorbed copper ions within 10 minutes under 10 ppm Cu2+ in the simulated biological system. XPS, PXRD, and gas adsorption measurements revealed that this high sensitivity and selectivity of Cd-MOF-74 resulted from the partial substitution of Cd2+ by Cu2+ in the framework. Although many MOF materials have been employed for sensor or selective adsorption of Cu2+, Cd-MOF-74 is the first example of MOFs showing both capabilities in simulated biological fluids, which represents a pioneering work that extends the applications of MOF materials in the biological field.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) demonstrate strong potential in biosample separation. However, the obtained MOFs powders are unsuitable for recovery techniques in an aqueous solution, especially the challenges of withdrawing MOFs particles and expanding their functions for specific applications. Herein, a general strategy is designed utilizing metal oxide-nanochannel arrays as precursors and templates for in-situ selective growth of MOFs structures. The exemplary MOFs (Ni-bipy) with tailored composition are selectively grown in NiO/TiO 2 nanochannel membrane (NM) using NiO as the sacrificial precursor, which enables one to achieve a ∼262 times concentration of histidine-tagged proteins within 100 min. The significantly improved adsorption efficiency in a wide pH range and the effective enrichment from a complex matrix as a nanofilter illustrate the great potential of MOFs in nanochannels membranes for the high-efficiency recovery of essential proteins in complex biological samples. The porous self-aligned Ni-MOFs/TiO 2 NM exhibits biocompatibility and flexible functionalities, which is desirable for the generation of multifunctional nanofilter devices and developing biomacromolecule delivery vehicles.

Abstract:A nanocomposite obtained by integrating functionalized iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MAA-ZnCrFeO4) into a metal–organic framework HKUST-1 or Cu3 (BTC)2, (BTC = 1, 3, 5 benzene tri carboxylate). MAA-ZnCrFeO4/Cu3 (BTC)2 were successfully synthesized by combining the metal–organic frameworks and MAA (MAA = mercaptoacetic acid) functionalized ZnCrFeO4 microspheres with a gradual synthesis method, which composite features both magnetic characteristic and high porosity of MOF. Powder X-ray diffraction spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Thermo gravimetric analysis, and vibrating Sample Magnetometer were used for the characterization of the magnetic MOF composites. Furthermore, this composite could endow a very high potential in the adsorption of dye pollutants. The speed adsorption process (15 min), low cost, high efficiency, selectivity, and high surface area are the main advantages of the proposed compound as a sorbent.

Abstract:1D nanomaterials have attracted great attention due to their outstanding anisotropic and linear structures. A facile method is developed to fabricate 1D copper metal-organic framework nanowires (Cu-MOF-NW) through steam-assisted conversion from Cu-MOF precursors. During the steam-assisted conversion, Cu-MOF precursor gradually dissolves in methanol steam, and then recrystallized into Cu-MOF-NW, which shows high aspect ratio of about 600 and identical crystal structure of MOF-74. As-prepared Cu-MOF-NW with multiscale porous structure can effectively remove cationic dyes even in dye mixture. Moreover, Cu-MOF-NW, as an ideal template, is calcined to form Cu nanoparticle-doped carbon nanofiber with maintaining its 1D morphology, which shows excellent electrocatalytic activity for the non-enzymatic sensing of glucose.

Abstract:It is highly required to develop well-designed separation materials for the specific isolation of certain proteins in proteomic research. Herein, the new type of metal organic framework (MOF)-derived polymer-mediated magnetic hollow nanocages was fabricated via stress-induced orientation contraction, which was further applied for specific enrichment of proteins. The core shell nanocomposites comprised of polymer-mediated ZIF-67 cores and polydopamine (PDA) shells, after annealing, generated magnetic hollow carbon nanocages with hierarchical pores and structures. Particularly, the magnetic carbonized PDA@F127/ZIF-67 hollow nanocages exhibited a remarkable adsorption capacity toward bovine hemoglobin (BHB) up to 834.3 mg g(-1), which was significantly greater than that of the directed carbonized ZIF-67 nanoparticles. The results also exhibited the notable specificity of the obtained nanocages on complex biosamples, including intact mixed proteins and fetal calf serum. The hierarchically hollow porous structure greatly improves the specific surface area and reduces the mass transfer resistance, leading to enhanced high adsorption for target protein BHB. This novel method will be promising for the applications in purification and enrichment of biomacromolecules for complex biosamples, which successfully solve the problem of low adsorption efficiency and tedious separating process of the previous MOF-derived materials.
Direct Electrochemistry of Hemoglobin Immobilized in CuO Nanowire Bundles.

Abstract:It is one of main challenges to find the suitable materials to enhance the direct electron transfer between the electrode and redox protein for direct electrochemistry field. Nano-structured metal oxides have attracted considerable interest because of unique properties, well biocompatibility, and good stability. In this paper, the copper oxide nanowire bundles (CuO NWBs) were prepared via a template route, and the bioelectrochemical performances of hemoglobin (Hb) on the CuO NWBs modified glass carbon electrodes (denoted as Hb-CuO NWBs/GC) were studied. TEM and XRD were used to characterize the morphology and structure of the as synthesized CuO NWBs. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) proved that Hb in the CuO NWBs matrix could retain its native secondary structure. A pair of well-defined and quasi-reversible redox peaks at approximately -0.325 V (vs. Ag/AgCl saturated KCl) were shown in the cyclic voltammogram curve for the Hb-CuO NWBs/GC electrode, which indicated the direct electrochemical behavior. The Hb-CuO NWBs/GC electrode also displayed a good electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. These results indicate that the CuO NWBs are good substrates for immobilization of biomolecules and might be promising in the fields of (bio) electrochemical analysis.
Copper-based metal-organic framework for highly efficient adsorption of lead ions from aqueous solution

Abstract:A nanomaterial, a copper-based metal organic framework (Cu-BTC MOF), was prepared by a one-step solvothermal synthesis method and applied for the removal of Pb(II) ions from an aqueous solution via adsorption. The Cu-BTC MOF nanomaterial was characterized via X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method. TEM and SEM images of the prepared Cu-BTC MOF presented octahedral crystals. Furthermore, EDX spectroscopy showed that the synthesized porous nanomaterial consisted of Cu, O, and C elements. The prepared Cu-BTC MOF was employed as an adsorbent for the removal of Pb(II) ions from an aqueous solution. Adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm modeling were conducted in detail. The maximum adsorption capacity values of the Cu-BTC MOF for Pb(II) ions at temperature conditions of 10, 25, and 40 °C were 890.94, 896.04, and 958.37 mg/g, respectively. The synthesized Cu-BTC MOF showed high distribution coefficient (Kd) values, and it was very effective in extracting Pb(II) ions. In the Pb adsorption process, the molar ratio of Pb adsorption/Cu desorption was found to be close to 1 indicating that ion exchange with Cu ions in the Cu-BTC MOF material occurs and the cation exchange between Pb ions and Cu ions can be considered as a dominant mechanism of the adsorption.

Abstract:The study reports the synthesis of conductive MOFs (Metal-organic frameworks) of the type NBu 4 M(DHBQ) 1.5 (M = Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Co 2+ ; DHBQ = 2,5- dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone) and their subsequent incorporation in PVP-based electrospun mats (EMs). The MOFs and MOF-modified EMs were carbonized to fabricate nanostructured metal oxide/carbon nanomaterial (MO/CNM). The synthesized and carbonized MOFs (MO/CNMs) and MOF-modified PVP EMs (MO/CNM EMs) were subjected to morphological, microstructural, and electrochemical characterization. Morphological analysis indicated a more uniform dispersion of networked nanomaterial on carbonization of MO/CNM EMs than MO/CNMs. Microstructural analysis revealed the successful formation of MOFs using metallic salts and DHBQ and the subsequent incorporation of MOFs in PVP-based EMs. Raman spectra and energy-dispersive X-ray spectra (EDX) also indicated the presence of corresponding metal oxide in the respective MO/CNMs and MO/CNM EMs. However, MOF-Cu-loaded PVP-based EMs could not be fabricated due to the limited dispersion of whisker-like Cu-MOF in PVP-based precursor solution resulting in repeated needle clogging. The uniaxial tensile strength of PVP-based EMs was observed to deteriorate with MOF loading, however, MOF-Ni exhibited comparatively higher elongation-at-break (~ 12%) than PVP-based EMs. Further, electrochemical characterization indicated MOF-Ni and MOF-Ni EM-based electrodes to exhibit comparatively better electrochemical performance than respective MOF-Co and MOF-Cu-based electrodes. Therefore, the study demonstrates the synthesis and development of uniformly dispersed metal oxide-based carbon nanomaterial using PVP-based EMs for designing engineered nanostructured materials for targeted drug delivery, sensor, and energy storage applications.

MOF contains organic linkers (Imidazole) as clusters and inorganic metal (Copper) in the nodes. Zeolitic Imidazole Frameworks (ZIF). In this current work, we deal with the synthesis and characterization of Copper ZIF materials. The synthesized materials were characterized using SEM, PXRD, XPS, TEM, and FTIR. To check the catalytic activity of the carbonised- ZIF, the Glassy Carbon Electrode (GCE) was modified. The modified GCE is used to find out its activity against various biomolecules, such as Dopamine, Ascorbic Acid, Uric Acid, etc. All the results will be analyzed, and the simultaneous detection of biomolecules will also be checked with the modified GCE.
Copper Nanoclusters Imparted Metalloporphyrin based Metal‐Organic Frameworks for Enhanced CO2 Electroreduction

Abstract:Strategies that can introduce catalytic auxiliary into electrocatalysts to boost the performance of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) are meaningful in exploring hybrid electrocatalytic systems. Here, a series of hybrid elelctrocatalysts (Cu NCs@MOF‐545‐M, M = Fe, Co and Ni) have been prepared by assembly Cu NCs with MOF‐545‐M (M = Fe, Co and Ni) and successfully applied in electrocatalytic CO2RR. In the obtained MOF‐545‐M (M = Fe, Co and Ni), the integration of Cu NCs with MOF‐545‐M (M = Fe, Co and Ni) can create a hybrid electrocatalytic system that enhances the charge transfer efficiency and electrocatalytic CO2RR activity. Specifically, the optimal Cu NCs@MOF‐545‐Co achieves high FECO (100%), CO generation rate (10.9 mol m‐2 h‐1) and energy efficiency (69%), which is superior to Cu NCs and MOF‐545‐Co, and represented to be one of the best performances to date. This work demonstrates a facile approach to significantly improve the FECO by loading metal nanoclusters into MOFs, providing a valuable reference for future studies on hybridization strategies to enhance the performance of electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Herein, monolayer self-assembly of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) onto graphene oxide (GO) is facilely achieved by taking advantage of their electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding interaction. Attributed by the rigid nanocage and donor/acceptor effect of POSS, the as-prepared POSS-GO monolayer nanostructure (denoted as PG) shows an ultrathin thickness of 1.6 nm and significantly suppressed stacking. Followed by post-functionalization of Cu2+, the POSS-GO-Cu2+ nanostructure (shortly termed as PGCu) exhibits outstanding performances including hemoglobin specificity, salt tolerance and ultrahigh adsorption capacity (up to 1657.2 mg g−1). Moreover, PGCu is successfully utilized for the separation of hemoglobin from human whole blood with the maintenance of protein activity. The present study furnishes a simple, rapid and cost-efficient route for the fabrication of ultrathin two-dimensional materials with considerable application potentialities for bio-separation and analysis.
