Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation of furfural(FF)into 2-methylfuran(MF)is a significant biomass utilization route.However,designing efficient and stable non-noble metal catalyst is still a huge challenge.Herein,we reported the N,O co-doped carbon anchored with Co nanoparticles(Co-SFB)synthesized by employing the organic ligands with the target heteroatoms.Raman,electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR),electro-chemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS),and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)characterizations showed that the co-doping of N and O heteroatoms in the carbon support endows Co-SFB with enriched lone pair electrons,fast electron transfer ability,and strong metal-support interaction.These electronic properties resulted in strong FF adsorption as well as lower apparent reaction activation energy.At last,the obtained N,O co-doped Co/C catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity(nearly 100 mol％FF conver-sion and 94.6 mol％MF yield)and stability for in-situ dehydrogenation of FF into MF.This N,O co-doping strategy for the synthesis of highly efficient catalytic materials with controllable electronic state will pro-vide an excellent opportunity to better understand the structure-function relationship.
Low-temperature synthesis of niobium oxide nanoparticles from peroxo niobic acid sol.

Abstract:A peroxo niobic acid sol was prepared by peptization of the niobic acid precipitate (Nb2O5·nH2O) with a H2O2 aqueous solution. Crystallized Nb2O5 nanoparticles and niobic acid nanoparticles were obtained by heating the peroxo niobic acid sol. When peroxo niobic acid sol prepared by peptization of the niobic acid precipitate ([NH3]=0.3 mol/l) was heated at 348 K for 1 week, Nb2O5 nanoparticles with a diameter of 4.5 nm and a SBET of 275 m2/g were obtained. When peroxo niobic acid sol prepared by peptization of the niobic acid precipitate ([NH3]=1 mol/l) was heated at 348 K for 1 week, niobic acid nanoparticles with a diameter of less than 2 nm were obtained. The pore structure and degree of crystallinity of the nanoparticles prepared by heating the peroxo niobic acid sol greatly depended on the concentration of the ammonia solution used for preparing the niobic acid precipitate.
Synthesis of a hierarchically porous niobium phosphate monolith by a sol–gel method for fructose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Abstract:Hierarchically porous niobium phosphate (NbP) was synthesised via a sol-gel method accompanied by phase separation and employed as a catalyst for fructose dehydration. The niobium precursor was prepared by digesting ammonium niobate(v) oxalate in aqueous H2O2 with citric acid as a chelating agent to prevent the precipitation of niobium hydroxide. Poly(acrylamide) and poly(ethylene glycol) were used as phase separation inducers to produce co-continuous macropores and gel skeletons. The NbP sample calcined at 600 degrees C for 8 h had a high surface area (S-BET approximate to 140 m(2) g(-1)) and large acidity (0.84 mmol-NH3 g(-1)). The NbP monolith was amorphous after calcination at 600 degrees C and transformed into an -NbOPO4 phase at 1000 degrees C. The NbP monolith calcined at 600 degrees C was an efficient acid catalyst for the dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in water (70% yield) or in aqueous dimethyl sulfoxide (90% yield). The productivity of HMF reached 7.3 x 10(-2) mol h(-1) per kg-solution at an initial fructose concentration of 10.0 wt% in water with a catalyst loading of 2.0 wt%.

Abstract:The 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) acts as an important chemical intermediate to bridge the biomass resources and industrial applications, which shows the potential for green development. However, the performance of biomass materials conversion to 5-HMF is still limited in the green solvent. Herein, an effective approach is reported to prepare the highly efficient solid acid catalysts, NbOx/WOy-ZrO2, to improve fructose conversion. It is found that the introduction of Nb results in the generation of the niobium oxides, which improves acid sites and tunes the ratios of Brønsted acid and Lewis acid on the surface of the WOy-ZrO2 support. With the acidity improvement and increasing acid sites of the NbOx/WOy-ZrO2, the highest fructose conversion is 99% in water. Meanwhile, the 5-HMF yield and the selectivity are also as high as 50.1% and 50.7% under the reaction temperature of 180 °C for a short reaction time of 30 min. The proposed NbOx/WOy-ZrO2 catalyst strategy will not only open a new way for designing the solid acid catalysts to achieve high performance of the 5-HMF in the water, but also promote the green production of biomass and sustainable development in the future.

Abstract:A sol-gel process and subsequent calcination was employed to fabricate NiO nanowires. It is identified that the obtained NiO nanowires are hexagonal and single crystalline in nature. It is also found that some of the nanowires branch. The formation mechanism of NiO nanowires has been discussed. It is considered that the sol-gel process in which the citric acid acted as the chelate played a critical role in the formation of NiO nanowires, and the vapor–solid (VS) mechanism was responsible for the formation of the nanowires.

Abstract:Selective C-O bond cleavage is critical in upgrading biomass derivatives to chemicals and fuels. However, eliminating side reactions from the aromatic rings is challenging, in large part because of the difficulty in precisely modulating the local atomic structure of the active sites. Herein, we report a Ni 3 Sn intermetallic nanoparticle with geometrically isolated Ni sites for hydrodeoxygenation of furfural, which shows considerable activity and 91% selectivity toward 2-methylfuran at 96% conversion, in stark contrast to the performance of Ni nanoparticle that mainly produces furan, CH 4 and C4 products derived from the ring chemistry. Experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the isolated Ni sites in Ni 3 Sn surface limits the furan ring interaction, while the electron donation from Sn to Ni facilitates the carbonyl O binding to Ni sites. It therefore prevents side reactions from ring chemistry, but allows a facile sequential reaction of selective carbonyl hydrogenation followed by C-OH scission to 2-methylfuran.

Abstract:Furfural is an industrial renewable platform chemical, which can be converted to useful furanics such as α-angelica lactone, carboxylic acids such as levulinic acid and valeric acid, or to higher carbon content via condensation routes for producing drop-in fuel replacements and chemicals with diverse applications. These important conversion processes may be carried out in selective fashions, albeit require adequate catalysts. They were successfully carried out using versatile, stable silica-wrapped niobium oxide nanostructured catalysts. For example, α-angelica lactone was converted in an integrated fashion to ethyl levulinate in 90 % yield, and the esterification of levulinic and valeric acids gave ethyl levulinate in quantitative yield and ethyl valerate in 90 % yield, respectively, at 140 °C. Catalytic, mechanistic and kinetic modelling studies shed light into the influence of the material properties on the catalytic performances. These catalysts outperformed pure Nb 2 O 5 , as well as hydrothermally synthesized composite consisting of Nb 2 O 5 nanoparticles embedded in a mesoporous siliceous matrix.

Niobium phosphotungstates: excellent solid acid catalysts for the dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural under mild conditions

Abstract:The efficient conversion of carbohydrates to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) under mild conditions represents a very attractive and promising method of producing important building blocks. In this work, niobium phosphotungstates, with Nb/P molar ratios of 0.6, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 (NbPW-06, NbPW-1, NbPW-2, and NbPW-4, respectively) have been prepared by a facile, one-pot, alcohol-mediated thermal process and used for the direct conversion of fructose to 5-HMF. By adding a certain amount of Nb, the surface of the catalyst became enriched in P, and this enrichment was associated with the presence of surface P-OH groups that offered Brønsted acid sites that can activate superficial hydrogen species to facilitate 5-HMF generation. Pyridine-FTIR confirmed the presence of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites, which might play important roles in the dehydration of fructose to 5-HMF. Furthermore, polar aprotic solvents were well-suited for the conversion, and higher yields of 5-HMF were obtained in polar aprotic solvents than in nonpolar solvents. A 5-HMF yield of 96.7% with complete fructose consumption was obtained over NbPW-06 in DMSO at 80 °C after 90 min. In addition, NbPW-06 could be recycled several times without a significant decrease in the catalytic activity. A catalytic mechanism for this reaction was proposed. Moreover, this catalytic system can also be utilized for the dehydration of sucrose and inulin to 5-HMF in satisfactory yields. This study establishes an important platform for the further design of Nb-containing catalysts for the production of 5-HMF from carbohydrates under mild conditions.
Single-Step Formation of Metal Oxide Nanostructures Wrapped in Mesoporous Silica and Silica–Niobia Catalysts for the Condensation of Furfural with Acetone

Abstract:The integration of metal oxide nanomaterials with mesoporous silica is a promising approach to exploiting the advantages of both types of materials. Traditional synthesis methods typically require multiple steps. This work instead presents a fast, one-step, template-free method for the synthesis of metal oxides homogeneously dispersed within mesoporous silica, including oxides of W, Ti, Nb, Ta, Sn, and Mo. These composites have tunable metal oxide contents, large surface areas, and wide mesopores. The combination of Nb2O5 nanoparticles (NPs) with SiO2 results in an increased surface area and a larger number of acid sites compared to pure Nb2O5 NPs. The surface texture and acidity of the silica–niobia composites can be tuned by adjusting the Nb/Si molar ratio. Moreover, the silica provides protection to the niobia NPs, preventing sintering during thermal treatment at 400 °C. The silica–niobia materials exhibit superior performance as catalysts in the aldol condensation of furfural (Fur) with acetone compared to pure niobia, leading to an up to 74% in product yield. Additionally, these catalysts show remarkable stability, retaining their performance over multiple runs. This work demonstrates the potential of the proposed synthesis approach for preparing more sustainable, high-performance, durable, and stable nanoscale metal oxide-based catalysts with a tunable composition, surface area, and active site density.

Abstract:Aldol condensation is of significant importance for the production of fuel precursors from biomass-derived chemicals and has received increasing attention. Here we report a Nb2O5 catalyst with excellent activity and stability in the aldol condensation of biomass-derived carbonyl molecules. It is found that in the aldol condensation of furfural with 4-heptanone, Nb2O5 has obviously superior activity, which is not only better than that of other common solid acid catalysts (ZrO2 and Al2O3), more importantly, but also better than that of solid base catalysts (MgO, CaO, and magnesium-aluminum hydrotalcite). The detailed characterizations by N2 sorption/desorption, NH3-TPD, Py-FTIR and DRIFTS study of acetone adsorption reveal that Nb2O5 has a strong ability to activate the C=O bond in carbonyl molecules, which helps to generate a metal enolate intermediate and undergo the nucleophilic addition to form a new C–C bond. Furthermore, the applicability of Nb2O5 to aldol condensation is extended to other biomass-derived carbonyl molecules and high yields of target fuel precursors are obtained. Finally, a multifunctional Pd/Nb2O5 catalyst is prepared and successfully used in the one-pot synthesis of liquid alkanes from biomass-derived carbonyl molecules by combining the aldol condensation with the sequential hydrodeoxygenation.
Pd/Nbopo4 Multifunctional Catalyst for the Direct Production of Liquid Alkanes from Aldol Adducts of Furans

Abstract:Great efforts have been made to convert renewable biomass into transportation fuels. Herein, we report the novel properties of NbO(x)-based catalysts in the hydrodeoxygenation of furan-derived adducts to liquid alkanes. Excellent activity and stability were observed with almost no decrease in octane yield (>90% throughout) in a 256 h time-on-stream test. Experimental and theoretical studies showed that NbO(x) species play the key role in C-O bond cleavage. As a multifunctional catalyst, Pd/NbOPO4 plays three roles in the conversion of aldol adducts into alkanes: 1) The noble metal (in this case Pd) is the active center for hydrogenation; 2) NbO(x) species help to cleave the C-O bond, especially of the tetrahydrofuran ring; and 3) a niobium-based solid acid catalyzes the dehydration, thus enabling the quantitative conversion of furan-derived adducts into alkanes under mild conditions.
Nano-H-ZSM-5 with Short B-Axis Channels As a Highly Efficient Catalyst for the Synthesis of Ethyl Levulinate from Furfuryl Alcohol

Abstract:For the ethanolysis of biomass-derived furfuryl alcohol (FA) to value-added ethyl levulinate (EL), the development of an efficient solid acid catalyst is very important for industrial application with high FA concentration. Herein, a H-ZSM-5 catalyst with nano b-axis channels (NB-H-ZSM-5) was synthesized and used for the conversion of FA. Detailed catalyst characterization proved that the NB-H-ZSM-5 catalysts (Si/Al = 25 similar to 125) with similar to 70 nm b-axis channels were successfully prepared. The NB-H-ZSM-5 catalyst with Si/Al = 75 showed the highest activity. Its structural characteristics allowed for fast diffusion of reactants and products and full utilization of active sites, which endowed it with higher activity compared to commercial H-ZSM-5 (C-H-ZSM-5). Its moderate acidity effectively inhibited the polymerization of FA even at a high FA concentration of 20 wt %. The spent catalyst was easily regenerated by coke burn-off to give a good recyclability. Furthermore, based on the proposed reaction network, a method of physically mixing the NB-H-ZSM-5 (75) catalyst with a small amount of Amberlyst-15 was proposed to further increase the EL yield from 64.7 to 82.1% at an FA concentration of 6 wt %.
Nitrogen-doped Co3O4 nanowires enable high-efficiency electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and cost-effective catalysts for electrochemically oxidizing biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into value-added 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is of great importance. Herein, we report a controllable nitrogen doping strategy to significantly improve the catalytic activity of Co3O4 nanowires for highly selective electro-oxidation of HMF into FDCA. The nitrogen doping leads to the generation of defects including nitrogen dopants and oxygen vacancies in Co3O4 nanowires, which is conducive to the formation of catalytically active sites. As a result, the electro-oxidation potential for HMF is only 1.38 V (vs. RHE) when the current density reaches 50 mA/cm2. More importantly, the conversion rate of HMF is as high as 99.5%, and the yield of FDCA is up to 96.4%.

Mesoporous Niobium Phosphate: an Excellent Solid Acid for the Dehydration of Fructose to 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural in Water

Abstract:By using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the template, a series of mesoporous niobium phosphates were synthesized at different pH values in an aqueous solution. Techniques such as small-angle X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and N-2 sorption technique were employed to characterize the mesoporous structures of thus-synthesized materials, EDAX to detect the composition, FTIR and solid state P-31 MAS NMR to investigate the framework information, while their acidic properties were analyzed using NH3-TPD and pyridine-FTIR. Samples prepared at neutral to acidic conditions exhibited high surface area (213-297 m(2) g(-1)), narrow pore size distribution (3-4 nm) and a great number of strong Lewis and Bronsted acid sites. These materials exhibited excellent activity in the dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in water. The maximum HMF yield reached 45% under 130 degrees C with a reaction time of 0.5 h and the yield slightly decreased to 32% after five cycles and the five-cycled catalyst can be almost regenerated by calcination at 500 degrees C with the yield of 40%. The excellent catalytic activity obtained in the aqueous phase can be attributed to its high acid site density and the tolerance to water.
Ligand‐Hybridization Activates Lattice‐Hydroxyl‐Groups of NiCo(OH) x Nanowires for Efficient Electrosynthesis

Abstract:Electrochemical dehydrogenation of hydroxides plays a crucial role in the formation of high-valence metal active sites toward 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HMFOR) to produce the value-added chemical of 2,5-furandicarboxylic (FDCA). Herein, we construct benzoic acid ligand-hybridized NiCo(OH)x nanowires (BZ-NiCo(OH)x) with ample electron-deficient Ni/Co sites for HMFOR. The robust electron-withdrawing capability of benzoic acid ligands in BZ-NiCo(OH)x speeds up the electrochemical activation and dehydrogenation of lattice-hydroxyl-groups (M2+-O-H ⇌ M3+-O), boosting the formation of abundant electron-deficient and high-valence Ni/Co sites. DFT calculation reveals that the deintercalation proton is prone to establishing a hydrogen bridge with the carbonyl group in benzoic acid, facilitating the proton transfer. Coupled with the synergistic oxidation of Ni/Co sites on hydroxyl and aldehyde groups, BZ-NiCo(OH)x delivers a remarkable current density of 111.20 mA cm−2 at 1.4 V for HMFOR, exceeding that of NiCo(OH)x by approximately fourfold. And the FDCA yield and Faraday efficiency are as high as 95.24% and 95.39%, respectively. The ligand-hybridized strategy in this work introduces a novel perspective for designing high-performance transition metal-based electrocatalysts for biomass conversion.

Abstract:The electrochemical catalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) derived from biomass to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) has attracted significant attention. Herein, the catalyst NiO-N/C composite was prepared and showed high activity for the electrochemical oxidation of HMF. The optimized NiO-N/C composite electrode supported by foamed nickel exhibits 99% conversion of HMF, 84% yield of FDCA, and 96% faradic efficiency. The NiO-N/C composite electrode is stable and remains active after six consecutive measurements. This work provides an effective method for the design and preparation of biomass energy electrocatalysts based on nitrogen-modulated NiO materials.

Abstract:Morphology control is important for nanocrystal engineering, and surfactants are usually employed as soft templates for the synthesis of nanocrystals with defined shape. Herein, we employed silicone oil as a surfactant for the first time and demonstrated its effectiveness in the controlled synthesis of uniform Na2Nb2O6 center dot H2O nanowires; these nanowires can be further transformed into perovskite-type monocrystalline NaNbO3 nanowires. Via combining morphology and phase analysis, it was shown that the addition of silicone oil in the hydrothermal processing of Na2Nb2O6 center dot H2O nanowires greatly suppressed the production of the impurity phase and broadened the range of the required reaction duration, leading to a facile synthesis of high-quality sodium niobate nano wires. The effect of the silicone oil concentration was also studied, and it was found that there existed an optimum concentration of silicone oil that resulted in the most uniform Na2Nb2O6 center dot H2O nano wires with nearly 100% phase purity.

Abstract:A synthetic niobia was modified by treatment with hydrogen peroxide to be used as a catalyst for converting glycerol into petrochemical compounds. The catalytic properties of niobium oxyhydroxide were obtained by generating acidic and oxygenated groups (peroxo groups) on the solid surface. Compounds like ethers and allyl alcohol were obtained. A very active H2O2-modified catalyst showed high activity for the oxidation and dehydration of 91% of glycerol conversion using H2O2 and 46% of allyl alcohol selectivity in volatile phase. The product was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (TGA-MS) and nuclear magnetic ressonance (NMR). These results strongly suggest that the reactions involve acid and oxidizing species generated after the reaction of niobium with H2O2. 1H and 13C multidimensional NMR spectroscopy confirmed the results obtained with GC-MS and showed the production of several compounds after niobia treatment.
