Abstract:MOF-235(Fe) and MIL-101(Fe) are two well-studied metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with dissimilar crystal structures and topologies. Previously reported syntheses of the former show that it has greatly varying surface areas, indicating a lack of phase purity of the products, i.e. the possible presence of both MOFs in the same sample. To find the reason for this, we have tested and modified the commonly used synthesis protocol of MOF-235(Fe), where a 3 : 5 molar ratio of iron(iii) ions and a terephthalic acid linker is heated in a 1 : 1 DMF : ethanol solvent at 80 °C for 24 h. Using XRD and BET surface area (SABET) measurements, we found that it is difficult to obtain a pure phase of MOF-235, as MIL-101 also appears to form during the solvothermal treatment. Comparison of the XRD peak height ratios of the synthesis products revealed a direct correlation between the MOF-235/MIL-101 content and surface area; more MOF-235 yields a lower surface area and vice versa. In general, using a larger (3 : 1) DMF : ethanol ratio than that reported in the literature and a stoichiometric (4 : 3) Fe(iii) : TPA ratio yields a nearly pure MOF-235 product (SABET = 295 m2 g-1, 67% yield). An optimized synthesis procedure was developed to obtain high-surface area MIL-101(Fe) (SABET > 2400 m2 g-1) in a large yield and at a previously unreported temperature (80 °C vs. previously used 110-150 °C). In situ X-ray scattering was utilized to investigate the crystallization of MOF-235 and MIL-101. At 80 °C, only MOF-235 formed and at 85 and 90 °C, only MIL-101 formed.
Green reconstruction of MIL-100 (Fe) in water for high crystallinity and enhanced guest encapsulation

Abstract:MIL-100 (Fe) is a highly porous metal-organic framework (MOF), considered as a promising carrier for drug delivery, and for gas separation and capture applications. However, this functional material suffers from elaborated and toxic synthesis that may hinder its biomedical use and large-scale production to afford commercial applications. Herein, we report a green mechanochemical water immersion approach to yield highly crystalline MIL100 (Fe) material. Subsequently, we have harnessed this strategy for facile fabrication of drug@MOF composite systems, comprising (guests) 5-fluorouracil, caffeine, or aspirin encapsulated in the pores of (host) MIL-100 (Fe). Inelastic neutron scattering was uniquely used to probe the guest host interactions arising from pore confinement of the drug molecules, giving additional insights into the reconstruction mechanism. Our results pave the way to the green production of MIL type materials and bespoke guest-encapsulated composites by minimizing the use of toxic chemicals, whilst enhancing energy efficiency and material's life cycle central to biotechnological applications.
Sustainable Preparation of MIL-100(Fe) and Its Photocatalytic Behavior in the Degradation of Methyl Orange in Water

Abstract:The real industrial establishment of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) requires significant advances in economic and chemical sustainability. This work describes a novel and simple method to prepare one of the most widely studied MOF materials, i.e., MIL-100(Fe), which significantly improves the sustainability of the conventional process in several aspects. This MOF material is prepared (i) at room temperature (instead of 150 °C used in the conventional method), (ii) after a few hours (instead of 6 days), (iii) in the absence of any inorganic corrosive acid (significant amounts of HF and HNO3 are used in the conventional method), and (iv) it is washed at room temperature (unlike the washing at 80 °C for 3 h). Interestingly, the only difference in the preparation method of MIL-100(Fe) compared with that of semiamorphous Fe-BTC (MOF material commercialized as Basolite F300 having the same metal and linker, and which can be also prepared under similar sustainable conditions) is to start from Fe(II) or Fe(III) sources, respectively, which opens certain versatility options in the room temperature synthesis procedures of MOF materials. The prepared samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, Cs-aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. These two room-temperature-made Fe-BTC materials were tested in the industrially demanded photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange under both ultraviolet and solar light radiation. MIL-100(Fe) was a very active photocatalyst in comparison with its homologue. That difference was mainly attributed to the presence of larger cavities within its structure.

Abstract:In the present study, open metal site iron-based MOF [MIL-100(Fe)], by a solvothermal method with polygonal morphology, are synthesised and then applied as a heterogeneous green catalyst for aza-Michael addition of various amines with α, β-unsaturated compounds. The MIL-100(Fe) was found to be efficient, selective, green and heterogeneous catalyst for the aza-Michael reaction. The proposed catalyst has better recyclability and can be reused six times without apparent loss of activity.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Abstract MIL-101 is a typical metal-organic framework. Mil-101, like the other metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a material with high porosity, large surface area, adjustable micro-pore size, and easy functional structure. Contrary to the most MOFs, Mil-101 has a high hydrothermal stability. All of the characteristics collectively make MIL-101 a good candidate for a catalyst support. In this paper, the synthesis methods of MIL-101 materials have been reviewed. It is pointed out that the hydrothermal synthesis method has many problems such as complicated process, many organic waste liquid and low yield. The room temperature fast synthesis method has the potential to provide industrialized production of MIL-101 with its unique advantages.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of microporous materials that have been highlighted with fast and selective sorption of gas molecules; however, they are at least partially unstable in the scale-up process. Here, we report a rational shaping of MOFs in a scalable architecture of fiber sorbent. The long-standing stability challenge of MOFs was resolved by using stable metal oxide precursors that are subject to controlled surface oxide dissolution-growth chemistry during the Mg-based MOF synthesis. Highly uniform MOF crystals are synthesized along with the open-porous fiber sorbents networks, showing unprecedented cyclic CO2 capacities in both flue gas and direct air capture (DAC) conditions. The same chemistry enables an in situ flow synthesis of Mg-MOF fiber sorbents, providing a scalable pathway for MOF synthesis in an inert condition with minimal handling steps. This modular approach can serve both as a reaction stage for enhanced MOF fiber sorbent synthesis and as a "process-ready" separation device.

Abstract:This review article deliberates on providing deep information on the environmentally friendly synthesis of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) materials show significant potential in a wide range of applications, and their performance exceeds that of existing reference substances. Therefore, their environment friendly manufacturing is highly appreciated. Inspiring developments in industrial-scale MOF production have been made throughout the last decade. However, still there is significant obstacle for the manufacturing of green MOFs. An outline is provided on how to aid and accelerate the commercialization of the most viable MOFs, along with the potential possibilities for future applications of each metal ion. At temperatures between 80 and 100 °C, the MOF's crystallization was analyzed in real time through the use of synchrotron radiation and in situ powder X-ray diffraction. Through kinetic analysis, it was discovered that while the induction and crystallization durations vary between synthesis batches, the rate-limiting processes remain consistent. In this review article, synthesis of unique nanostructures of MOF by various green synthesis methods that are environment friendly, toxicant-free, and cost-effective is described. In addition to this, the potential uses of MOFs in various environmental applications are elaborated in this review article.
Site-specific growth of MOF-on-MOF heterostructures with controllable nano-architectures: beyond the combination of MOF analogues

Abstract:The integration of different metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into one system has led to the recent combinatorial innovation of various MOF-on-MOF hybrids; however control over their site-specific growth beyond MOF analogues remains challenging. In this work, a site-specific epitaxial-growth strategy is developed to synthesize MOF-on-MOF heterostructures comprised of two MOFs with totally different compositions. A guest MOF (ZIF-8) is epitaxially grown on the specific {110} facets of a host MOF (MIL-125). Moreover, the position of ZIF-8 growth on MIL-125 is also selectable by using MIL-125 hosts with {110} facets exposed on either the corner or side surface. Consequently, two MIL-125@ZIF-8 heterostructures with elaborately designed different architectures are synthesized. Benefiting from the high adsorption capacity of ZIF-8 and the photocatalytic activity of MIL-125, the MIL-125@ZIF-8 heterostructures demonstrate synergistically enhanced photocatalytic performance compared to single MOF subunits. Moreover, the corner growth leads to higher activity than the side growth of the MIL-125@ZIF-8 heterostructures. Our contribution paves the way for the rational design of composite MOFs with tunable compositions and nanostructures using the crystal engineering approach.

Abstract:MIL-53 represents one of the most notable metal-organic frameworks given its unique structural flexibility and remarkable thermal stability. In this study, a shaker-type ball milling method has been developed into a facile and generalizable synthetic strategy to access a family of MIL-53 type materials under ambient conditions. During the explorations of [M(OH)(fumarate)] (M = Al, Ga, and In), we report a positive correlation between the metal-ligand (M-L) bond reversibility and the size of resultant crystallites under the mechanochemical process. The more kinetically labile the M-L bond is, the larger the afforded crystallite size is.

Abstract:Multivariate (MTV) hierarchical metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which contain multiple regions arranged in ordered structures, show promise for applications such as gas separation, size-selective catalysis, and controlled drug delivery. However, the complexity of these hierarchical MOFs is limited by a lack of control during framework assembly. Herein, we report the controlled generation of hierarchical MOF-on-MOF structural formation under the guidance of two design principles, surface functionalization and retrosynthetic techniques for stability control. Accordingly, the tunability of spatial distributions, compositions, and crystal sizes has been achieved in these hierarchical systems. The resulting MOF-on-MOF hierarchical structures represent a unique crystalline porous material which contains a controllable distribution of functional groups and metal clusters that are associated together within a framework composite. This general synthetic approach not only expands the scope and tunability of the traditional MTV strategy to multicomponent materials, but also offers a facile route to introduce variants and sequences to sophisticated three-dimensional hierarchical and cooperative systems. As a proof of concept, the photothermal effects of a porphyrinic core-MOF are exploited to trigger the controlled guest release from a shell-MOF with high guest capacity, highlighting the integrated cooperative behaviors in multivariate hierarchical systems.

Abstract:Green, facile, and large-scale preparation of functionalized metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) remains a challenge. Herein, we report a rapid synthesis of functionalized MOFs by the integration of post-synthetic ligand exchange (PSLE) and mechanochemistry. This mechano-PSLE approach can circumvent the hurdles of PSLE such as long reaction time, excessive solvent, and even failure of PSLE caused by redissolution and recrystallization under solvothermal conditions. More importantly, the gram-scale MOF functionalized with the chiral group can be obtained facilely and greenly. It exhibited excellent asymmetric catalytic performance (81% conversion and 92.1% ee) for α-alkylation of aldehydes irradiated by a xenon lamp, providing a basis for industrial batch production of functionalized MOFs.

Abstract:Iron(III) aminoterephthalate Metal-Organic Frameworks (Fe-BDC-NH2 MOFs) have been demonstrated to show potential for relevant industrial and societal applications (i.e., catalysis, drug delivery, gas sorption). Nevertheless, further analysis is required in order to achieve their commercial production. In this work, a systematic synthetic strategy has been followed, carrying out microwave (MW) assisted hydro/solvothermal reactions to rapidly evaluate the influence of different reaction parameters (e.g., time, temperature, concentration, reaction media) on the formation of the benchmarked MIL-101-NH2, MIL-88B-NH2, MIL-53-NH2 and MIL-68-NH2 solids. Characterization of the obtained solids by powder X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy allowed us to identify trends to the contribution of the evaluated parameters, such as the relevance of the concentration of precursors and the impact of the reaction medium on phase crystallization. Furthermore, we presented here for the first time the MW assisted synthesis of MIL-53-NH2 in water. In addition, pure MIL-101-NH2 was also produced in water while MIL-88-NH2 was the predominant phase obtained in ethanol. Pure phases were produced with high space-time yields, unveiling the potential of MW synthesis for MOF industrialization.

Solvent-free mechanochemical route for the construction of ionic liquid and mixed-metal MOF composites for synergistic CO2 fixation

Abstract:The synergistic effect between multiple active sites is a powerful approach to wield control in catalysis. However, it remains a challenge to integrate various active species simultaneously into a porous material in an organized and cooperative manner. Herein, by virtue of the tunable secondary building units (SUBs) and pore structures of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), we demonstrate a straightforward way to integrate multiple catalytic components into MOFs via mechanochemical synthesis, whereby the phase separation of various components can be avoided. The multi-functionality in the resulting MOFs came from doping the metal nodes with another metal species and encapsulating molecular catalysts in the cavities, as demonstrated by partially replacing the zinc ions with cobalt ions and enveloping ionic liquids (IL) in the ZIF-8 (Zn) framework to yield IL@ZIF-8(Zn/Co). It is shown that compared to the homometallic MOF, the bimetallic one together with the introduced ionic liquid brings about the opportunity to take advantage of the synergism. This is reflected in the superior performance of IL@ZIF-8(Zn/Co) with respect to the related individual components in the industrially relevant cycloaddition of epoxides and CO2. Given that the strategy presented is applicable to other MOF materials and molecular catalysts, our approach, therefore, opens a new avenue for the introduction of multi-functionality into MOFs for various potential applications.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), which consist of central metal nodes and organic linkers, constitute a fast growing class of crystalline porous materials with excellent application potential. Herein, a series of Mn-based multimetallic MOF (bimetallic and trimetallic MIL-100) nano-octahedra are prepared by a facile one-pot synthetic strategy. The types and proportions of the incorporated elements can be tuned while retaining the original topological structure. The introduction of other metal ions is verified at the atomic level by combining X-ray absorption fine structure experiments and theoretical calculations. Furthermore, these multimetallic Mn-based MIL-100 nano-octahedra are utilized as sulfur hosts to prepare cathodes for Li–S batteries. The MnNi-MIL-100@S cathode exhibits the best Li–S battery performance among all reported MIL-100@S composite cathode materials, with a reversible capacity of ≈708.8 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles. The synthetic strategy described herein is utilized to incorporate metal ions into the MOF architecture, of which the parent monometallic MOF nano-octahedra cannot be prepared directly, thus rationally generating novel multimetallic MOFs. Importantly, the strategy also allows for the general synthesis and study of various micro-/nanoscale MOFs in the energy storage field.

Abstract:Materials derived from metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated exceptional structural variety and complexity and can be synthesized using low‐cost scalable methods. Although the inherent instability and low electrical conductivity of MOFs are largely responsible for their low uptake for catalysis and energy storage, a superior alternative is MOF‐derived metal‐based derivatives (MDs) as these can retain the complex nanostructures of MOFs while exhibiting stability and electrical conductivities of several orders of magnitude higher. The present work comprehensively reviews MDs in terms of synthesis and their nanostructural design, including oxides, sulfides, phosphides, nitrides, carbides, transition metals, and other minor species. The focal point of the approach is the identification and rationalization of the design parameters that lead to the generation of optimal compositions, structures, nanostructures, and resultant performance parameters. The aim of this approach is to provide an inclusive platform for the strategies to design and process these materials for specific applications. This work is complemented by detailed figures that both summarize the design and processing approaches that have been reported and indicate potential trajectories for development. Abstract:Metal–organic structures have great potential for practical applications in many areas. However, their widespread use is often hindered by time-consuming and expensive synthesis procedures that often involve hazardous solvents and, therefore, generate wastes that need to be remediated and/or recycled. The development of cleaner, safer, and more sustainable synthesis methods is extremely important and is needed in the context of green chemistry. In this work, a facile mechanochemical method involving water-assisted ball milling was used for the synthesis of MOF-303. The obtained MOF-303 exhibited a high specific surface area of 1180 m2/g and showed an excellent CO2 adsorption capacity of 9.5 mmol/g at 0 °C and under 1 bar.

Abstract:Supported Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) with a high specific surface area are of great interest for applications in gas storage, separation, sensing, and catalysis. In the present work we report the synthesis of a novel composite architecture of MOF materials supported on a flexible mat of electrospun nanofibers. The system, based on three-dimensional interwoven nanofibers, was designed by using a low-cost and scalable multistep synthesis protocol involving a combination of electrospinning and low-temperature atomic layer deposition of oxide materials, and their subsequent solvothermal conversion under either conventional or microwave-assisted heating. This highly versatile approach allows the production of different types of supported MOF crystals with controlled sizes, morphology, orientation and high accessibility.
α-Fe@MIL-100(Fe) composites obtained by one-pot sonochemical synthesis

Abstract:In this work, we present a one-pot synthesis route to prepare a new composite materials of iron (α-Fe) and a metal–organic framework (MOF) of iron, the MIL-100(Fe), using the sonochemical process. The experimental setup consists of applying high-power ultrasonic pulses to a water-dimethylformamide (H 2 O-DMF) (1:1) solution containing iron powder, 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H 3 BTC), and nitrate (NO 3− ). X-ray diffractions and the FT-IR measurements confirm that MIL-100(Fe) was obtained and the difference parameter Δ between the asymmetric and symmetric infrared mode of the order of 250 cm −1 is an indication that the carboxyl oxygen is coordinated through an unidentate interaction with iron Fe(III) in the MOF structure, also the presence of α-iron(Fe 0 ) in the composite was confirmed by the appearance of the diffraction peak at 44.7°. Scanning electron microscopy showed a rod-like morphology for the MIL-100(Fe) and the magnetization measurements suggest a ferromagnetic behavior with maximum magnetization ( M S ) varying as a function of synthesis parameter Fe 0 , H 3 BTC, and nitrate ratio. Higher and lower M S , of 12.52 emu.g −1 and 0.34 emu.g −1 , were obtained for Fe 0 :H 3 BTC:HNO 3 ratio of 3:1:3.5 and 1:1:3.5, respectively. The largest and smallest Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface areas of 1490.2 m 2 .g −1 and 666.4 m 2 .g −1 were obtained for the Fe 0 :H 3 BTC:HNO 3 ratio of 1:1:3.5 and Fe 0 :H 3 BTC:NaNO 3 of 1:1:20, respectively. Decomposition of nitrate anion, and DMF, under ultrasound producing perhydroxyl radicals, HO 2 •, and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and hydrogen (H 2 ) has been used to explain the mechanism for the α-Fe@MOF-100(Fe) magnetic composites preparation.
