Abstract:In this work, Boron Nitride (BN) nano-particles have been synthesized by hydrothermal treatment using boric acid and an amine-based nitrogen source. BN, a structural analogue of carbon, has garnered considerable attention in the recent years due to its high thermal conductivity, chemical stability, low toxicity, large intrinsic band gap and chemical inertness. The synthesized nanoparticles are non-toxic and heavy metal free exhibiting strong blue fluorescence under UV illumination. The BN nanoparticles were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), UV–Vis Spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Zeta Potential measurement. FT-IR analysis revealed the formation of B–N, O–H and N–H bonds. In case of UV–Vis spectroscopy, absorption wavelength was observed at 264 nm. The synthesized nanoparticles may have potential applications in the field of fluorescence sensing and bio-imaging.
