Abstract:Water was employed as plasticizer to produce porous polymer membrane. The gel polymer electrolyte containing 72% liquid organic electrolyte (0.5M LiI, 0.05M I2, 0.5M 4-tert-butylpyridine in PC) shows ionic conductivity of 6.4×10−4Scm−1 due to its high porous structure. Moreover, the porous electrolyte membrane shows good mechanical strength and serves as a separator in the solar cells. Quasi-solid-state solar cells fabricated with this gel electrolyte displayed energy conversion efficiency of 6.0% when the cell gap was tuned to 30μm. Moreover, these cells possessed much better long-term stability compared with those based on liquid organic electrolyte.

Abstract:A novel gel electrolyte was prepared by dispersing the polymer-grafted ZnO nanoparticle into liquid electrolyte. This gel electrolyte behaves long-term stability as the poly(ethylene glycol methyl ether) molecules are strongly connected to ZnO nanoparticles with covalent bond in polymer-grafted ZnO nanoparticle. A quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) based on this gel electrolyte yields the energy transfer efficiency of 3.1% at AM 1.5 direct irradiation of 75mWcm−2 light intensity. Addition of 4-tert-butylpyridine into the electrolyte results in dramatically improved short circuit current density Isc, and the overall efficiency is also improved to 5.0%, while the open circuit voltage (Voc) and fill factor (ff) are insensitive to the presence of 4-tert-butylpyridine. DSC fabricated with this novel gel electrolyte displays better thermal stability than those solidified with the conventional nanoparticle ZnO(Ac).

Abstract:This paper describes a new strategy to make a full solid-state, flexible, dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) based on novel ionic liquid gel, organic dye, ZnO nanoparticles and carbon nanotube (CNT) thin film stamped onto a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. The CNTs serve both as the charge collector and as scaffolds for the growth of ZnO nanoparticles, where the black dye molecules are anchored. It opens up the possibility of developing a continuous roll to roll processing for THE mass production of DSSCs.

Abstract:The characteristics of electrolytes containing novel polymer quaternary ammonium iodide, polysiloxane with quaternary ammonium side groups (PSQAS), were investigated. PSQAS exhibits a single-anionic conductivity and has special advantages over usually used iodides in dye-sensitized solar cells. Electrolytes based on PSQAS exhibited the maximum ambient conductivity (25°C) of 4.96 × 10−3Scm−1. The polymer gel electrolyte based on PAN and PSQAS has been employed to fabricate quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell with an overall conversion efficiency of 2.67% at irradiation of 100mWcm−2.

Abstract:Quasi-solid-state electrolytes were fabricated with mesoporous silica SBA-15 as a framework material. Ionic conductivity measurements revealed that SBA-15 can enhance the conductivity of the quasi-solid-state electrolyte. The diffusion coefficients of polyiodide ions such as I-3(-) and I-5(-) which were confirmed by Raman spectroscopic measurement, were about twice larger than that of I-. The optimized photoenergy conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) with the quasi-solid-state electrolyte was 4.3% under AM 1.5 irradiation at 75 mW.cm(-2) light intensity.

Abstract:An ionic liquid based polymer, poly(1-ethyl-3-(acryloyloxy)hexylimidazolium iodide) (PEAI), was synthesized and employed as electrolyte to fabricate all-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells. The photophysical properties of PEAI were studied by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. PEAI exhibited significant hypochromism and red shift in UV-vis absorption spectra and large Stokes shifts in photoluminescence spectra, indicating the formation of a novel pi-stacked structure in which the imidazolium rings in the side chain were stacked. Without iodine in its preparation, DSC with PEAI electrolyte achieved a conversion efficiency of 5.29% under AM 1.5 simulated solar light irradiation (100 mW cm(-2)). The side-chain imidazolium pi-pi stacking in PEAI played a key role in the holes transport from the photoanode to the counter electrode. Abstract:Poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and silica nanoparticles were employed to solidify 3-methoxypropionitrile based liquid electrolytes containing an ionic liquid, 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium iodide, as iodide resource. These new quasi-solid-state electrolytes were successfully used for regenerative phtoelectrochemical cells that yielded about 6.7% efficiency under simulated full sunlight (air mass 1.5. 100 mW cm(-2)) in combination with an amphiphilic ruthenium polypyridyl photosensitizer. The as-fabricated device showed a good thermostability at 80 degreesC for 30 days, maintaining higher than 90% of its initial performance. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS)-capped TiO2 nanoparticles have been synthesized and employed in dye-sensitized solar cells to form a quasi-solid state electrolyte. Owing to the long alkyl-chain capping around the TiO2 nanoparticles interacting with the liquid solvent, the dye sensitized solar cell based on such DBS-capped TiO2 nanoparticle framework material gel electrolyte shows higher stability compared with the non-capped one in the long-term application and gives a comparable overall efficiency of 6.3% at AM 1.5 illumination.

Abstract:A novel composite polymeric gel comprising room-temperature ionic liquids (1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium-hexafluorophosphate, BMImPF6) and heteropolyacids (phosphotungstic acid, PWA) in poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) matrix was successfully prepared and employed as a quasi-solid state electrolyte in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These composite polymer electrolytes offered specific benefits over the ionic liquids and heteropolyacids, which effectively enhanced the ionic conductivity of the composite polymer electrolyte. Unsealed devices employing the composite polymer electrolyte with the 3% content of PWA achieved the solar to electrical energy conversion efficiency of 1.68% under irradiation of 50mWcm−2 light intensity, increasing by a factor of more than three compared to a DSSC with the blank BMImPF6-based polymer electrolyte without PWA. It is expected that these composite polymer electrolytes are an attractive alternative to previously reported hole transporting materials for the fabrication of the long-term stable quasi-solid state or solid state DSSCs.

Abstract:A new conjugated ionic polymer, poly(N-bromo-2-ethynylpyridinium bromide) (PBEPB) was applied for a quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and compared the device performance with poly(N-bromo-2-ethynylpyridinium iodide) (PBEPI) as reference cell. The polymer was prepared by the spontaneous polymerization of 2-ethynylpyridine using bromine. The PBEPB was completely soluble in such organic solvents as DMF, DMSO and NMP etc. The photoluminescence peaks of PBEPB was observed at 407 nm and 516 nm, which corresponds to the photon energy of 3.15 eV and 2.41 eV, respectively. Quasi-solid-state DSSCs with a SnO2:F/TiO2/D719 dye/solid-state electrolyte/Pt device was fabricated with an ionic conjugated polymer with pyridinium substituents, which shows the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.95%.

Abstract:A new conjugated ionic polymer was applied for DSSCs. Poly(2-ethynyl-N-methylpyridinium iodide) (PEMPI) was prepared by the non-catalyst polymerization of 2-ethynylpyridine using iodomethane without any additional initiator or catalyst. The polymerization proceeded homogeneously to give a high yield of polymer (87%). The photoluminescence peak was observed at 568 nm corresponding to a photon energy of 2.19 eV. Quasi-solid-state DSSCs with a SnO2:F/TiO2/D719 dye/solid-state electrolyte/Pt device was fabricated with PEMPI, which shows the maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.01%.

Abstract:A quasi-solid-state, coaxial, fiber-shaped dye-sensitized solar cell is developed by wrapping transparent and conducting carbon nanotube sheets on a modified Ti wire. The use of eutectic melts and design of the coaxial structure enable effective contacts between the two electrodes and active layer with a good performance, including high thermal stability and flexibility.

Abstract:A series of imidazolium-containing ionic liquid copolymers has been synthesized through free radical copolymerizations of an imidazolium-containing ionic liquid monomer (MEBIm-I), poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (POEM), and acrylonitrile at various molar ratios. A thorough investigation has been conducted to study the effects of the chemical structure on the ionic conductivities, ionic diffusion coefficients, and catalytic activities of the ionic liquid copolymers. The presence of the ethylene oxide segments enhanced the ionic diffusion coefficients and conductivities of the POEM-containing ionic liquid copolymers. The incorporation of suitable contents of acrylonitrile units enhanced the catalytic activities of the ionic liquid copolymers. The photovoltaic and electrochemical impedance properties of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) assembled from these ionic liquid copolymer–based electrolytes have been evaluated. A maximum power conversion efficiency of 7.57%, with a maximum short-circuit current density of 16.0 mA cm–2, an open-circuit voltage of 0.84 mV, and a fill factor of 57.0%, has been achieved for DSSCs based on the ionic liquid copolymers (architecture: fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass/TiO2/N719 dye/ionic liquid polymer–based electrolyte/Pt/FTO glass) under AM 1.5 illumination with an intensity of 100 mW cm–2.

Abstract:We develop a novel and efficient quasi-solid-state electrolyte based on the mesoporous silica SBA-15 as a framework material for a dye sensitized nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cell. A solar energy-to-electricity conversion efficiency of 4.34% is achieved under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW/cm(2)).

Abstract:We report three improved stability dye-sensitized TiO2 photoelectrochemical cells using quasi-solid polymer electrolytes containing poly(propylene oxide) (PPO), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) or poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(propylene oxide)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (P123). After introducing the polyether into the liquid electrolyte, the parameters of these quasi-solid-state solar cells are 90% comparable to that of the liquid photochemical cells, although the conductivities of these polyether framework gel electrolytes are lower than that of the bulk liquid electrolyte. The different morphologies of dried liquid electrolyte and the polyether gel electrolytes are characterized with an atomic force microscope (AFM) to explain the better stability exhibited by the polyether gel electrolytes.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous silica with uniform pore size was prepared by using Pluronic P123 as the structure-directing agent. Their characteristics were analysized by TEM and a N-2 adsorption system. Ionic liquid-based gel electrolyte was fabricated by using ordered mesoporous silica as the framework materials to solidify ionic liquid electrolyte. The diffusion coefficient of I-3(-) in gel electrolyte is higher than that in ionic liquid electrolyte due to the formation of favorable channel for I-3(-) diffusion. The optimized overall conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells with ionic liquid-based gel electrolyte was 5.22% under irradiation of 60 mW cm(-2).

Abstract:Solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) are fabricated using a novel ionic polymer electrolyte containing hexylimidazolium iodide (HII) ionic polymer prepared by in situ polymerization of N,N'-bis(imidazolyl) hexane and 1,6-diiodohexane without an initiator at low temperature (40 degrees C). The as prepared HII ionic polymer has a similar structure to alkylimidazolium iodide ionic liquid, and the imidazolium cations are contained in the polymer main chain; so, it can act simultaneously as the redox mediator in the electrolyte. By incorporating an appropriate amount of 1,3-dimethylimidazolium iodide (DMII) in HII ionic polymer (DMII/HII ionic polymer = 0.7:1, weight ratio), the conductivity of the ionic polymer electrolyte is greatly improved due to the formation of Grotthuss bond exchange. In addition, in situ synthesis of ionic polymer electrolyte guarantees a good pore-filling of the electrolyte in the TiO2 photoanode. As a result, the solid-state DSC based on the ionic polymer electrolyte containing HII ionic polymer and DMII without iodine achieves a conversion efficiency of 6.55% under the illumination of 100 mW cm(-2) (AM 1.5), which also exhibits a good at-rest stability at room temperature. 2017 Elsevier B.V.
