Abstract:Non-metallic elements such as carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen in liquid sodium exert a significant effect on the material behaviour of cell construction materials in liquid metal battery systems. Austenitic Fe-18%Cr-8%Ni foil and α-iron foil are equilibrated at 550 °C in sodium, and, subsequently, the concentration of carbon in the foils is analysed. A new relationship has been obtained between carbon activity and carbon concentration in α-iron foil, and is compared with the previously developed ones involving 304 SS foil reference samples. An equilibrium method has been developed to measure the activity of carbon in liquid sodium by using α-iron with this new expression. The results show similar values to those obtained with the 304 SS foil reference samples.

Abstract:Transition metal fluorides display the combination of high capacity and high electrode potential that are essential to boosting the energy density of lithium ion batteries. However, their application as cathode materials has been hindered by an incomplete understanding of their electrochemical capabilities and limitations. Herein, we present a system of single crystalline, monodisperse iron (II) fluoride nanorods and detail how their morphology and uniformity make them ideal for mechanistic study. High-resolution analytical transmission electron microscopy reveals intricate morphological features, lattice orientation relationships, and oxidation state changes that redefine the conversion reaction with unprecedented spatial resolution. We first introduce the presence of surface specific reactions and examine how they critically influence phase evolution, diffusion kinetics and cell failure. Next, we examine how the reversibility of the conversion reaction is governed by topotactic cation diffusion through an invariant lattice of fluoride anions and the nucleation of metallic particles on semi-coherent interfaces. We will focus on how each mechanistic feature establishes new principles for improving reaction hysteresis, kinetics and reversibility and how this new holistic understanding can inform the more effective application of metal fluorides. To ensure a pertinent result, ex-situ data was extracted from coin cells that deliver near theoretical capacity (570 mAh g-1) and extraordinary cycling stability (>90 % capacity retention after 100 cycles). This exceptional performance was enabled solely through the use of an ionic liquid electrolyte. Using a combination of impedance spectroscopy, TEM, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we explain how the solid electrolyte interphase forming ability of this electrolyte precludes the major failure mechanisms associated with transition metal fluorides. We conclude this talk by examining the complementary nature of this cathode electrolyte pairing, particularly with regards to high-temperature cycling. Figure 1

X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) were applied to characterize the phase structure, particle morphology, and the coating structure. XRD analysis, TEM micrographs, HR-TEM images and SAED analysis revealed that both LTO particles exhibited a well- developed spinel nanocrystal structure with average sizes between 20-70 nm. The C-LTO particles exhibited roughly spherical shape coated by an amorphous carbon layer up to 10 nm in thickness. The CNT-LTO samples showed uniform square nanocrystals with edge length around 20 nm and nanoscale graphitic layers covering the surface, revealing the carbon nanotubes interconnection networks among the particle assemblies. Electrochemical studies of lithium insertion/extraction performance are evaluated by the galvanostatic charge/discharge tests, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Both LTO particles showed the superior initial discharge capacity of more than 200 mAh/g at 1/10C rate. The irreversible capacity of the C-LTO particles at more cycles was due to large polarization resulted from excessive carbon and possible residual precursors. The CNT-LTO particles show larger reversible capacity and enhanced electrochemical Li+ insertion/extraction kinetics at different cycling rates. The comparative structural and electrochemical analyses demonstrated that both nanoscale graphitic covering layers and the CNT interconnection networks increase the electronic conductivity and improve the kinetics rates of lithium insertion/extraction in the CNT-LTO particles.

Abstract:Uniformly dispersed core-shelled Fe/Fe3O4 nanocomposite on porous carbon was synthesized via a wet-chemistry approach, which was tested as a cathode material in rechargeable Li-O-2 battery, showing highly active catalytic effect towards the electrochemical reactions, of particular, oxygen reduction reaction. XPS data showed the oxygen reduction reaction took place on the surface of the catalyst during discharge of the cell. Both XRD and XPS data demonstrated that lithium peroxide partook in the reversible reactions in the Li-O-2 cell with a TEGDME-based electrolyte.

Abstract:Li5FeO4/carbon nanotube (LFO/CNT) composites composed of sub-micron sized LFO and a nanocarbon with high electrical conductivity were successfully synthesized for the use as lithium ion predoping source in lithium ion cells. The phase of LFO in the composite was found to be very sensitive to the synthesis conditions, such as the heat treatment temperature, type of lithium salt, and physical state of the precursors (powder or pellet), due to the carbothermic reduction of Fe3O4 by CNTs during high temperature solid state reaction. Under optimized synthesis conditions, LFO/CNT composites could be synthesized without the formation of impurities. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the synthesis and characterization of a sub-micron sized LFO/CNT composites.

Abstract:Transition metal oxides are being widely explored to meet the requirements of high-capacity anodes for Li-ion batteries in electric and hybrid electric vehicles. Depending on the energy storage mechanism, anode materials are classified into insertion, conversion, and alloying types. Iron oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ) is a conversion-type anode material for Li-ion cells. It has drawn significant attention due to its high specific capacity (1007 mAh g −1 ), environmental friendliness, and the availability of simple synthesis routes. In this study, attempts are made to improve the electrical conductivity and structural stability of Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles by embedding them in functionalized carbon nanotubes (F-CNT)/polyaniline (PANI) network, and the resulting nanocomposite has been studied as anode material for Li-ion cells. This composite anode material is synthesized using a simple hydrothermal method and in-situ-polymerization technique. Cells assembled with Fe 2 O 3 /F-CNT/PANI as anode against Li metal in half-cell configuration are found to offer an initial discharge capacity of 1633 mAh g −1 and charge capacity of 353 mAh g −1 . After 50 cycles of operation, the discharge and charge capacities are 155 mAh g −1 and 130 mAh g −1, respectively, with a Coulombic efficiency of 84% and capacity retention of 37%. Anode failure mechanism for the observed capacity fading is studied using post-mortem analysis.

Abstract:Lithium–air batteries (LABs) have a theoretically high energy density. However, LABs have some issues, such as low energy efficiency, short life cycle, and high overpotential in charge–discharge cycles. To solve these issues electrocatalytic materials were developed for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which significantly affect battery performance. In this study, we aimed to synthesize electrocatalytic N-doped carbon-based composite materials with solution plasma (SP) using Co or Ni as electrodes from organic solvents containing cup-stacked carbon nanotubes (CSCNTs), iron (II) phthalocyanine (FePc), and N-nethyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP). The synthesized N-doped carbon-based composite materials were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). TEM observation and XPS measurements revealed that the synthesized carbon materials contained elemental N, Fe, and electrode-derived Co or Ni, leading to the successful synthesis of N-doped carbon-based composite materials. The electrocatalytic activity for ORR of the synthesized carbon-based composite materials was also evaluated using electrochemical measurements. The electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the electrocatalytic performance for ORR of N-doped carbon-based composite material including Fe and Co showed superiority to that of N-doped carbon-based composite material including Fe and Ni. The difference in the electrocatalytic performance for ORR is discussed regarding the difference in the specific surface area and the presence ratio of chemical bonding species.

Abstract:Nanosized α-Fe2O3 (ca. 50nm) and Li–Fe composite oxides (ca. 29nm) powders were synthesized via gel polymer route. The gels were obtained with thermal polymerization of acrylic acid solutions of iron and lithium nitrates. The calcination of these gels at temperatures from 300°C to 500°C results in α-Fe2O3 from Fe(NO3)3 precursor and Li–Fe composite oxides Li2O–Fe3O4–LiFeO2 from a mixed precursors of Fe(NO3)3 and LiNO3. Thermal gravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate the precursors and products. The electrochemical performance of the Fe-based oxides was also evaluated. After 200 cycles, their capacity can be as high as 1300mAh/g for α-Fe2O3 and 1400mAh/g for Li–Fe oxide while the initial capacity loss is as low as 21.8%. The Li–Fe oxide electrodes exhibit better capacity retention than the α-Fe2O3 electrodes. They are interesting negative electrodes for high energy density lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Nanocomposite of LiF-Ni with a highly heterogeneous mixture was fabricated using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method, and it exhibited remarkable electrochemical activity. The electrochemical reaction of LiF-Ni nanocomposite thin-film electrode with Li was first investigated by the discharge/charge and cyclic voltammetry. The initial charge capacity of the LiF-Ni/Li cell was found to be 107 mAh·g−1. The process of releasing Li from the as-deposited LiF-Ni nanocomposite thin films was confirmed by the ex-situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and the selected area electron diffraction measurements. These results provided a direct experimental evidence to support the electrochemical decomposition of LiF driven by the transition metal Ni in the potential range from 1.0 V to 4.0 V. LiF-Ni nanocomposite electrodes could be a novel and appropriate candidate for Li-storage materials.

Abstract:The microemulsion method is employed to synthesize iron nanoparticles with an average size of ∽3 nm using trioctyl phosphine oxide (TOPO) as a stabilizing agent. The morphology, structure, and composition of the nanoparticles are studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV–VIS spectroscopy. The iron nanoparticles show a remarkable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity, and the scheme of iron nanoparticle-on-electrode is successfully used in the in situ SERS study of adsorbed molecules. Electrocatalysis over the iron nanoparticles is demonstrated in the highly efficient and selective reduction of H2O2 in the presence of oxygen.
In Situ Measurements of the Mechanical Properties of Electrochemically Deposited Li 2 CO 3 and Li 2 O Nanorods

Abstract:Solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) is "the most important but least understood (component) in rechargeable Li-ion batteries". The ideal SEI requires high elastic strength and can resist the penetration of a Li dendrite mechanically, which is vital for inhibiting the dendrite growth in lithium batteries. Even though Li2CO3 and Li2O are identified as the major components of SEI, their mechanical properties are not well understood. Herein, SEI-related materials such as Li2CO3 and Li2O were electrochemically deposited using an environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM), and their mechanical properties were assessed by in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) and inverse finite element simulations. Both Li2CO3 and Li2O exhibit nanocrystalline structures and good plasticity. The ultimate strength of Li2CO3 ranges from 192 to 330 MPa, while that of Li2O is less than 100 MPa. The Effect of TiO2 Nanoparticles and the Liquid-Phase Therapy on the Resistance of the Interphase Lithium/Polymer Electrolyte with the Introduction of Ionic Liquid

Abstract:It is studied how the treatment of a metal lithium surface with a 1 M LiN(CF 3 SO 2 ) 2 solution in the 1,3-dioxolane/1,2-dimethoxyethane (2 : 1) mixture affects the resistance of the interphases formed by lithium with the polymer and nanocomposite electrolytes based on the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid. The liquid-phase therapy is shown to reduce the resistance at the Li/electrolyte interphase by a factor of 2.5 at room temperature and extend the working temperature range to –30°C. The introduction of TiO 2 nanoparticles into the polymer electrolyte, along with the liquid-phase therapy of both the cathode and the Li-anode, provides a high and stable discharge capacity of the Li//LiFePO 4 battery for 100 charge–discharge cycles.

Abstract:Nanoscale solid-state transformation of metals and alloys during electrochemical processes are critical for applications including corrosion, electrochemical machining and alkali metal batteries. However, these nanoscale phase and chemical transformations at metal surface and interface cannot be probed by conventional characterization techniques lacking of site-specific information with high spatial resolution. Here, we use in situ transmission electron microscopy to demonstrate a unique phase transformation upon electrochemical alloying of Ag nanowire with Li. It features a surface reaction of electrochemical lithiation of Ag followed by a fast redistribution of Ag into small nanoparticles embedded in Li2O. The Ag-Li alloying reaction proceeds through a surface reaction mode with a strong dependence of surface facets. The weak bonding between AgLi and the presence of residual O2 in TEM column causes the as-formed Ag-Li alloy instantly transform to a Li2O shell with well-dispersed Ag nanoparticles.

Abstract:A Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 /carbon nanofibers (LTO/CNFs) composite has been synthesized by solid-state reaction with the in situ growth of CNFs using the chemical vapor deposition method in N 2 /C 2 H 2 . The nanocomposite is characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectrum, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, and is investigated as an anode material for lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. The underlying mechanism for the improvement is analyzed by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The in situ synthesized composite shows better electrochemical performance than the bare LTO. The in situ formation of CNFs not only supply an efficient electronic conductive network but also reduce the particle size of LTO and increase in specific surface area, leading to increased electrical conductivity and rapider Li-ion diffusion in electrode/electrolyte interface and bulk electrode.

Abstract:NiO–Ni nanocomposite was prepared by calcining a mixture of Ni2(OH)2CO3 and ethanol in a tube furnace at 700°C for 45min in air. The microstructure and morphology of the powders were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In the composite, nanoscale Ni particles (<10nm) were dispersed in the NiO matrix (about 100nm). Electrochemical tests showed that the nanocomposite had higher initial and reversible capacity than pure NiO. The presence of the nanoscale Ni phase had improved both of the initial coulombic efficiency and the cycling performance, due to its catalytic activity, which would facilitate the decomposition of Li2O and the SEI during the charge process.
Synthesis and performance of LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4/nano-carbon webs composite cathode

Abstract:LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4/nano-carbon webs composite cathode material was synthesized by an in situ solid-state reaction at 700°C using polypropylene as the reductive agent and carbon precursor. Pyrolysis of polypropylene at high temperature ensures the purity of LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4 by in situ introducing the reductive agents of hydrogen and carbon, hinders the growth of LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4 particles, and would improve the conductivity of the composite by in situ carbon wrapping. Electrochemical tests indicate that this type of composite has an initial discharge capacity of 143mAhg−1 with an average discharge voltage of 3.65V (522Whg−1) and good cycling stability, which is attributed to the nano-sized carbon webs around LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4 particles. Cyclic voltammetry tests showed that, the coexistence of Mn2+ with Fe2+ at 4c sites would improve the redox kinetics of Fe3+/Fe2+ couple in LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4/nano-carbon webs composite cathode, which is further supported by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).

Abstract:In this paper, the influences of different pre-treated carbon nanotubes on the preparation of carbon nanotube loaded by ferric oxide have been investigated. The images of composite catalysts were observed through TEM, the analyses of XRD showed that ferric oxide wrapping on carbon nanotubes was α-Fe_2O_3 and the mechanism of carbon nanotube loaded by ferric oxide was discussed by utilizing IR and TGA. Pre-treated carbon nanotubes absorbed by Fe(NO_3)_3 were annealed ,and then the composite catalysts of carbon nanotube loaded by ferric oxide was directly gained.
