Abstract:The microstructure and the performance of corrosion resistance of Zr-Nb-Cu alloys have been investigated in the superheated steam of 500℃/10.3MPa.The results showed that the alloy Zr-1.0Nb-0.05Cu possessed the best corrosion resistance,which was far superior to that of Zr-4 and N18.The second phase par-ticles which contain Nb,Fe and Cr formed in Zr-Nb-Cu alloys,which was a factor that affected the corrosion resistance of Zr alloys.During heating up of Zr-Nb-Cu alloys in the DSC experiment,the corrosion induced hydride dissolved and hydrogen solutionizing in the matrix.When the temperature reached to α/β phase tran-sition temperature(about 550℃),β phase transformation occurred.The addition of Nb element can decrease the temperature of hydrogen-induced β phase transformation,and the increasing of Cu content can reduce the hydrogen absorbing amount,and improve the corrosion resistance of the alloy significantly.
Corrosion of Zr-Sn-X (X: Fe, Ni or Cr) Ternary Alloy in High Pressure Steam at High Temperature

Abstract:Effects of the addition of Fe, Ni, or Cr to Zr-Sn binary alloy and material processings on corrosion resistance in high temperature,, high pressure steam were investigated in order to make clear the correlation between corrosion resistance of Zr alloy and electrical characteristics of oxide film. The increase of Fe or Ni content in Zr-Sn alloy improved the corrosion resistance, whereas with the increase of Cr content, improvement of corrosion resistance was not remarkable. Corrosion resistance was also improved by the heat treatment which depresses the precipitation and the growth of intermetallic compounds containing Fe, Ni, or Cr. From the facts that the increase of Fe or Ni content and the heat treatment to improve the corrosion resistance decrease the electrical conductivity of the oxide film formed on Zr alloys, electrical conductivity of oxide film is considered to be the rate-determining factor in oxidation of Zr alloys in high temperature, high pressure steam.

Abstract:Zirconium-based alloys are highly regarded by the research community for their exceptional corrosion resistance, thermal stability, and mechanical properties. In our work, we investigated two newly developed alloys, Zr42.42Cu41.18Al9.35Ag7.05 and Zr46.81Cu35.44Al10.09Ag7.66, in the form of ingots and ribbons. In the course of our investigation, we conducted a comprehensive structural and thermal analysis. In addition, an examination of the corrosion activity encompassing electrochemical studies and an analysis of the corrosion mechanisms was carried out. To further evaluate the performance of the materials, tests of their mechanical properties were performed, including microhardness and resistance to abrasive wear. Structural analysis showed that both alloys studied had a multiphase, crystalline structure with intermetallic phases. The samples in the form of ribbons showed improved corrosion resistance compared to that of the ingots. The ingot containing a higher content of copper Zr42.42Cu41.18Al9.35Ag7.05 was characterized by better corrosion resistance, while showing lower average hardness and a higher degree of abrasive wear based on SEM observations after pin-on-disc tests.

Abstract:Due to the small neutron absorption cross section and excellent thermal creep performance, zirconium alloy is one of the most important cladding materials for fuel rods in commercial fission reactors. However, quantitative analysis of the effects of temperature and grain boundaries on the corrosion microstructure evolution of zirconium alloys is still needed. The establishing of a phase field simulation for the corrosion process of polycrystalline zirconium alloy and the systematical investigating of the thermodynamic influence are both very important. In this study, the phase field model of the corrosion process in zirconium alloys is developed by combining corrosion electrochemistry through calculating the interfacial energy at the metal-oxide and oxide-fluid boundaries. Then the model is used to investigate the uniform corrosion behavior on the surface of Zr-2.5Sn alloy, which demonstrates that the corrosion kinetic curve follows a cubic rule. Subsequently, the influence of temperature on the corrosion thickening curve of zirconium alloy is examined, and good agreement between simulation and experimental results is achieved. It is observed that during early stage of oxide layer formation, there is a high growth rate with minimal temperature dependence; however, as the oxide layer thickness increases, temperature becomes a significant factor affecting its growth rate, with higher temperatures resulting in faster corrosion rates. Furthermore, the effect of polycrystalline zirconium alloy matrices on corrosion rate is investigated, revealing that the grain boundaries accelerate oxide layer thickening due to enhanced oxygen diffusion rates. At metal-oxide interface, O2- bands are formed in areas with higher O2- concentration along these grain boundaries towards the metal matrix, which mainly influences oxidationcorrosion rate during the initial oxidation stage.

Abstract:Purpose The effect of zirconium, zinc, calcium and rare earth group as the alloying elements on mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of magnesium alloys was investigated in the simulated body fluid. Design/methodology/approach Pure magnesium and the alloying elements were melted and zirconium was finally added to obtain different alloys. The castings were annealed and some samples were aged heat treated. X-ray fluorescence was used for the elemental analysis and LSV was used for electrochemical corrosion evaluations. Findings Results showed that corrosion resistance decreases with increasing zirconium content. The lowest corrosion rate was obtained for the samples containing 0.3% and 0.45% of Zr from annealed and aging heat-treated samples, respectively. Yield stress enhances with increasing the zirconium content and degrades by the aging heat treatment. Originality/value These alloys were studied for the first time. Effect of casting without using protective flux and vacuum furnaces. Effect of annealing at 440°C for 2 h and artificial aging at 200°C for 16 h. Alloy’s electrochemical behavior on the body’s simulation environment has been investigated. Improvement of mechanical properties after annealing heat treatment by high zirconium percentage.

Abstract:The aim of the paper is to study the Zr addition effect on the mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of a high-entropy alloy from the CoCrFeMoNi system. This alloy was designed to be used for components in the geothermal industry that are exposed to high temperature and corrosion. Two alloys, one Zr-free (named Sample 1) and another one doped with 0.71 wt.% Zr (named Sample 2), were obtained in a vacuum arc remelting equipment from high-purity granular raw materials. Microstructural characterization and quantitative analysis by SEM and EDS were performed. The Young modulus values for the experimental alloys were calculated on the basis of a three-point bending test. Corrosion behavior was estimated by linear polarization test and by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The addition of Zr resulted in a decrease in the value of the Young modulus but also in a decrease in corrosion resistance. The beneficial effect of Zr on the microstructure was the grain refinement, and this ensured a good deoxidation of the alloy.

Abstract:Metals that are used to reconstruct skeletal structures often interfere with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) owing to differences in magnetic susceptibility; consequently, metals with lower magnetic susceptibilities need to be developed for use in implant devices. Herein, we investigated the corrosion properties of the Zr-14Nb-5Ta-1Mo alloy, which exhibits low magnetic susceptibility and excellent mechanical properties. The pitting potential of Zr-14Nb-5Ta-1Mo was higher than that of pure Zr. The passive current density of Zr-14Nb-5Ta-1Mo also higher than that of pure Zr, which is ascribable to slow reconstruction of the initial passive film associated with the presence of Nb and Ta. XPS revealed that the passive film is enriched with Nb and Ta. Therefore, while the Zr-14Nb-5Ta-1Mo alloy exhibited a high initial passive current density in simulated body fluid, it formed a stable passive film that suppressed localized corrosion. Zr-14Nb-5Ta-1Mo is therefore a prospective implant-material alloy candidate.

Abstract:Zr-0.4Sn-0.7Nb-0.3Fe-0.1Cr-0.15Mo-0.12O- x V, x=0, 0.05 wt% alloys were designed to explore the effect of water with pure water and 1000 ppb dissolved oxygen on the corrosion behavior of the alloys. Results showed that dissolved oxygen can accelerate the corrosion of the alloys. The V-containing alloy possesses improved corrosion resistance in the DO environment, which can be attributed to the enhancement of strength by the trace addition of V and therefore slows the evolution of the undulated interface of oxide/metal. Moreover, V can provide more free electrons for the oxide film, which squeezed the oxygen vacancies, thereby decreasing the concentration of oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:In the complicated real physiological environment in vivo, body fluids and blood are constantly replenished and move dynamically, and therefore, the dynamic impacts of bodily fluids and blood need to be considered in the evaluation of biodegradable materials. However, little research has been conducted on the impact of dynamic flowing circumstances on the corrosion characteristics of zinc-based alloys, particularly at high flow rates. The effects of various flow rates on the bio-corrosion behavior of the Zn-Cu alloy are thoroughly explored in this study. A model is developed using finite element analysis to investigate the impacts of flow rates and fluid-induced shear stress. The results reveal that the corrosion process of the Zn-Cu alloy is significantly accelerated by a higher flow rate, and a large fluid-induced shear stress caused by the boundary effect is found to promote corrosion. Furthermore, the empirical power function between the average flare rates in Hank's solution and the corrosion rates of the Zn-Cu alloy is established by numerical simulation. The results provide insightful theoretical and experimental guidance to improve and evaluate the efficacy and lifespan of biomedical zinc-based alloy implants.

Abstract:Microstructures and corrosion of TiNbTaZrMo (Ti20Nb20Ta20Zr20Mo20) High-Entropy Alloy (HEA) were investigated in the Simulated Body Fluid (SBF). Microstructure of this alloy was investigated by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) techniques. Our observations confirmed the presence of two bcc phases as the major matrix as well as another minor phase in the microstructure of the alloy. Concentration of some elements, such as tantalum, niobium, and molybdenum in the dendritic branches and the presence of zirconium and titanium in the inter-dendritic branches were clearly evidenced by Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. Given importance of corrosion of implant alloys in the human's body, electrochemical impedance and cyclic polarization tests were performed on the alloy in SBF. Through the corrosion tests, corrosion potential, current, and resistance were obtained as Ecorr = −0.42 V, icorr = 0.34 εA·cm−2, and Rp = 27.44 k ohm·cm2, respectively. The results revealed that the rate of corrosion in TiNbTaZrMo HEA is about 26 times better than that of Ti6Al4V alloy. Also, both alloys had no pitting corrosion in the SBF solution.

Abstract:Ti-15%Zr alloy and Ti-15%Zr-2%Ta alloy were fabricated to be used in biomedical applications. The corrosion of these two alloys after being immersed in simulated body fluid for 1 h and 72 h was investigated. Different electrochemical methods, including polarization, impedance, and chronoamperometric current with time at 400 mV were employed. Also, the surface morphology and the compositions of its formed film were reported by the use of scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray. Based on the collected results, the presence of 2%Ta in the Ti-Zr alloy passivated its corrosion by minimizing its corrosion rate. The polarization curves revealed that adding Ta within the alloy increases the corrosion resistance as was confirmed by the impedance spectroscopy and current time data. The change of current versus time proved that the addition of Ta reduces the absolute current even at high anodic potential, 400 mV. The results of both electrochemical and spectroscopic methods indicated that pitting corrosion does not occur for both Ti-Zr and Ti-Zr-Ta alloys, even after their immersion in SBF solutions for 72 h.

Abstract:A series of Ti–xZr alloys with Zr contents ranging from 5 to 20wt% was prepared and the effects of Zr addition on the microstructure, physical properties, and corrosion behavior of Ti alloys were investigated. The phase and microstructures were characterized using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Ti–xZr alloys exhibited α-Ti structure at Zr content of 20wt% or below. Commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) was used as a control. We also investigated the effects of alloying element Zr on the mechanical property, oxidation protection ability, and corrosion behavior of Ti–xZr binary alloys. The physical properties and corrosion behavior of Ti–xZr alloys were sensitive to the Zr content. The addition of Zr did contribute to the hardening of cp-Ti due to solid-solution strengthening of α-Ti. Ti–xZr alloys containing up to 10wt% Zr resulted in good oxidation resistance, while Ti–xZr alloys with above 10wt% Zr demonstrated higher oxidation weight gain than cp-Ti. Electrochemical experiments showed that the Ti–xZr alloys exhibited better corrosion resistance compared to that of cp-Ti.

Abstract:In this study, amorphous/nanocrystalline TiAlCrNbZr x (x = 0, 0.3, 0.7, 1) multi-component alloy films have been successfully prepared on the surface of 316L stainless steel using direct current magnetron sputtering technique. The composition, microstructure, corrosion and mechanical properties , especially the effect of Zr content and structure on the properties, are discussed in detail. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) data revealed the presence of nanocrystalline phases among the amorphous phase. The results showed that the amorphous phase can effectively mitigate corrosion, while the nanocrystals can improve the mechanical properties and adhesion of the films as the Zr content increased. The lattice distortion caused by the incorporation of large atomic Zr contributed to a significant change in the film structure. TiAlCrNbZr films with the most nanocrystals showed better plastic deformation ability, while TiAlCrNbZr0.3 has a suitable amorphous/nanocrystal ratio, good corrosion resistance, and excellent mechanical properties.

Abstract:In this study we compared the corrosion behavior of single β-phase alloys: (i) Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr and (ii) Ti-45Nb, that contain similar amount of β-phase stabilizers. Corrosion resistance was analyzed in the PBS+H 2 O 2 solution, which simulates the conditions as can be found during post-operative inflammation. Results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and ion-release measurements revealed that Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr alloy demonstrated significantly higher corrosion resistance compared to Ti-45Nb. Post-immersion microscopic analysis demonstrated that a thinner layer of oxidation products was formed on Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr alloy surface. Overall results allowed to exclude the beneficial role of Nb in tailoring corrosion resistance of Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr under simulated inflammatory conditions. Abstract:This work investigates the nanotribological and corrosion performances of a Zr56Co28Al16 alloy in its crystalline and amorphous configuration. The corrosion and tribological performances of the investigated alloy are excellent regardless of the structure. In both amorphous and crystalline cases, the alloy surface is covered by a Zr-rich mixed oxide layer, extending the adhesive friction domain and suppressing abrasive wear. Moreover, the native mixed oxide offers durable protection against corrosion in aqueous NaCl or HCl solutions.

Abstract:The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of Zr addition and potentiodynamic polarization on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of Ti-22Nb and Ti-22Nb-6Zr alloy samples. The corrosion tests were carried out in 0.9% NaCl at 37 degrees C and neutral pH value, utilizing the OCP, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. The results of XRD and optical microscopy indicated that the addition of Zr stabilized the P phase, which plays a crucial role in the corrosion resistance improvement of the Ti-22Nb-6Zr alloy. From the polarization curves, it can be seen that the alloys exhibited a wide passive region without the breakdown of the passive films and also low corrosion current densities. in addition, the values of the corrosion current densities and passive current densities decreased with the addition of 6 at% Zr into the Ti-22Nb alloy. The EIS results of these two alloy samples after 1-h immersion in 0.9% NaCl solution, and being fitted by R-S(Q(P)R(P)) model, suggested that the corrosion resistance of the passive films improved with the addition of Zr and only a single passive film formed on the surfaces. However, two time constants were observed for the Ti-22Nb and Ti-22Nb-6Zr alloy samples after potentiodynamic polarization, the spectra of which can be fitted using the R-S(Q(o)(R-o(Q(b)R(b)))) model. in addition, the corrosion resistance of the two alloy samples was reinforced significantly because of polarization when compared to the immersed samples. All these observations suggested a nobler electrochemical behavior of the titanium alloys with the addition of Zr element and after polarization.
Influence of Ammonia on the Corrosion Behavior of a Zr–Sn–Nb Alloy in High Temperature Water

Abstract:Corrosion behaviors, microstructures of oxide films, and hydrogen absorptions of a Chinese domestic Zr alloy in 6.7 × 10 −3 mol/L ammonia solution and 2.9 × 10 −4 mol/L LiOH+9.3 × 10 −2 mol/L H 3 BO 3 solution at 360 °C, 18.6 MPa were studied. Weight gains, oxide film thicknesses, and hydrogen absorptions showed that the corrosion rate in the ammonia solution is a little higher than that in the boron–lithium solution. There is no significant difference in the microstructure and crystalline structure between the oxide films formed in the two types of solutions. The element distributions along the depth direction of the oxide films showed the existence of nitrogen in the oxide film formed in ammonia solution. Moreover, nitrogen was found to be segregated in local areas in a range of about 2 μm from the oxide/metal interface. The corrosion behavior of the Chinese domestic Zr alloy in 360 °C aqueous solution shows no difference with other Zr alloys.

Abstract:With the aim of improving corrosion resistance of rod cladding for in-service and accident conditions, six new zirconium alloys (named N1–N6) have been designed. The contents of Sn and Nb were optimized for better behavior at high-temperature pressurized water, and Fe, Cr, V, Cu or Mo elements were added to the alloys to adjust the corrosion behavior. The current work focused on the rapid corrosion behavior in 500 °C/10.3 MPa steam for up to 1960 h, aiming to test the corrosion resistance at high temperature. The structure of matrix and properties of second-phase particles (SPPs) were characterized to find the main differences among these alloys. All the six alloys exhibited better corrosion resistance than N36, and N1 was shown to have the best performance. A careful analysis of the corrosion kinetics curves revealed that Cr was beneficial for severe condition. Elements Fe, Cr, V, Cu or Mo aggregated into SPPs with different concentrations and structures. This was demonstrated to be the main reason for different corrosion resistance. Due to good processing control, all alloys had a uniform structure and a uniform distribution of SPPs. As for N4, N6 and N36, the existing of large-size SPPs (450 nm) might be a contributing factor of the relatively poor corrosion resistance.

Abstract:Mg-Zn-Ca alloy has been attracting increasing attention as a potential biodegradable implant material. In this paper, Mg-3Zn-0.2Ca and Mg-4Zn-0.2Ca alloys were prepared by means of vacuum melting and subsequent hot extrusion process. The influences of Zn content on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion and wear behavior of Mg-Zn-Ca alloys in simulated body fluid (SBF) were studied. The results show that with increased Zn content, the grain size and corrosion resistance were decreased, while the mechanical strength and wear resistance were increased, under both dry sliding and SBF-lubricated conditions. For the same Mg-Zn-Ca alloy, the wear loss rate under SBF lubrication was higher than dry sliding condition, indicating a strong corrosion-assisted wear effect of SBF to the Mg-Zn-Ca alloy.

Abstract:In recent years, Mg-Zn-Y-Zr alloys have attracted significant interest due to the high strength at room and elevated temperature. Current researches mainly focus on the microstructures and mechanical properties of Mg-Zn-Y-Zr alloys, however, the corrosion behaviors of Mg-Zn-Y-Zr alloys have been seldom studied. In the present paper, the mass loss corrosion and electrochemical corrosion behavior of three Mg-Zn-Y-Zr alloys with Zn contents of 4.3% (mass fraction), 6% and 8.6% in 5% (mass fraction) NaCl solution were studied, respectively. The morphology, microstructure and phase composition of these alloys after different immersion time were observed. The results showed that the type of second phase and the content of Zn in these alloys significantly affect their corrosion resistance performance and the Mg-Zn-Y-Zr alloy with 4.3% Zn exhibited better corrosion resistance. With the increase of Zn content, the W phase with stronger effect of galvanic corrosion formed at grain boundaries and the content of Zn in alpha-Mg matrix also increased, which resulted in the worse corrosion performance Experimental results also showed that the corrosion process of Mg-4.3Zn-0.7Y-0.6Zr alloy can be divided into three stages: galvanic corrosion, Zr-rich zone-Zr-poor zone corrosion and pitting corrosion.
