Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> Electrochemical capacitors are high-power energy storage devices having long cycle durability in comparison to secondary batteries. The energy storage mechanisms can be electric double-layer capacitance (ion adsorption) or pseudocapacitance (fast redox reaction) at the electrode-electrolyte interface. Most commonly used electrode materials are carbon materials with high specific surface area, microporous-activated carbons. A considerable number of studies have been conducted to optimize the pore structure and surface functionalities of activated carbons. In addition to conventional activated carbons, other types of carbon materials such as carbon aerogel/xerogel, templated carbons, carbide-derived carbons, carbon nanotubes, and graphene-based materials have been investigated. This review highlights the key features of advanced carbon materials for application to commercial capacitor devices.

Unveiling key impact parameters and mechanistic insights towards activated biochar performance for carbon dioxide reduction

Abstract:Chemically activated biochar is effective in supercapacitors and water splitting, but low conductivity hinders its application as a carbon support in carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). Based on the observed CO2RR performance from potassium hydroxide (KOH)-activated biochar, increased microporosity was hypothesized to enhance the performance, leading to selection of potassium carbonate (K2CO3) for activation. K2CO3 activation at 600℃ increased microporosity significantly, yielding a total Faradaic efficiency of 72%, compared to 60% with KOH at 800℃. Further refinement of thermal ramping rate enriched micropore content, directly boosting FEC to 82%. Additionally, K2CO3's lower activation temperature could preserve hydroxyl groups to improve ethylene selectivity. These findings demonstrate that optimizing microporosity and surface chemistry is critical for designing activated biochar-based CO2RR electrocatalysts. Despite lower electrical conductivity of activated biochar, selecting the appropriate activating agents and conditions can make it a viable alternative to carbon black-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2>The production of activated carbon using biochar exclusively for energy and environmental applications is attracting attention. In this review, an outline of the recent trends towards biomass-derived inclusive specific lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose-derived electrodes is explained in a holistic manner. Distinctive lab-scale approaches for manufacturing biochar, including carbonisation, and the role of activation agents and conditions are also considered. In particular, various modification procedures and their influence on the electrochemical performance of super capacitor-based applications are described, as well as its suitability towards multiple environment applications. Feedstock with diverse compositions, carbonisation and activation procedures have considerable domination on the properties of produced biochar. Activated biochar is pristine, environment friendly and cost-effective with advanced potential in many fields. Furthermore, a wide range of available renewable precursors and investigations on adaptability and sustainability are briefly discussed in the present manuscript.

Abstract:Due to an effective synthesis strategy, two kinds of hierarchical porous activated carbons were derived via KOH and H3PO4 activation and carbonization processes from baobab fruit shells (BFSs) used as a green and low-cost biomass precursor. The physicochemical properties and the morphological structure of the baobab fruit shell derived carbons (BFSCs) were systematically studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The biomass-derived activated carbons, BFSC1 (using KOH activation), and BFSC2 (using H3PO4 activation), obtained exhibit high specific capacitances of 233.48 F g(-1) and 355.8 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1), respectively, due to their different surface structures and high specific surface areas. Furthermore, the as-assembled, flexible all-solid-state super capacitor devices based on the BFSC electrodes exhibit a high specific capacitance of 58.67 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) and a high energy density of 20.86 Wh kg(-1), at a power density of 400 W kg(-1). This facile route highlights the exciting possibility of utilizing waste baobab fruit shells to produce low-cost, green and high-performance carbon-based electrode materials for sustainable electrochemical energy storage systems. Abstract:To achieve a higher energy density for the supercapacitor without degrading cycle stability, functionalization of biomass based-AC with oxygen-containing groups was applied. Nanostructured carbon materials were produced from barley straw biomass waste using the activation-functionalization by FeCl 3 and urea via the pyrolysis method in a tubular reactor at 900 °C. The electrode made up of carbon BCF-U in the three-electrode cell in aqueous KOH electrolyte showed high-specific capacitance of 515 F g –1 at current density of 2 A g −1 and in aqueous Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte the capacitance of 379 F g −1 at 3 A g −1 . The BCF-U electrode showed cycling stability, retaining more than 99% capacitance after 5000 cycles in 1 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte. The fabricated symmetric supercapacitor device with carbon BCF-U showed a high-energy density of 10.7 Wh kg –1 and a power density of 720 W kg −1 in aqueous 6 M KOH. Different characterizations were carried out to show that the functional group and morphological features of the activated carbon were closely related to the superior capacitive performance by enhancing diffusion of electrolyte ions. The analysis proved the formation of graphitic nature with mixed micro- and mesoporous textures in addition to carbon nanotube, carbon nano rod, and graphene. These unique features make synthetic activated and functionalized samples possess good adsorption capacity for electrical double layer capacitors. The results demonstrate that nanostructured carbon materials derived from a low-cost biomass waste can serve as an economical carbon feedstock for production of high-performance electrode material for supercapacitors.

Corncob-Derived Activated Carbon as Electrode Material for High-Performance Supercapacitor

Abstract:In this study, corncob was explored as a low-cost and abundant precursor for the preparation of activated carbon via carbonization and the KOH activation method. The alkaline/biochar ratios varied from 3:1 to 5:1, and the activation temperatures ranged from 700 to 900 °C. The characterized results reveal that the alkaline/biochar ratios and activation temperatures had a remarkable influence on the morphology and microstructure of as-prepared activated carbon (CACT-R). The CACT-R presented a porous structure with a large number of micropores and a small number of mesopores. The reasonable distribution of micropores and mesopores endows the ideal structure for ion transfer and charge storage. The optimal sample CAC700-4 exhibited the best capacitive performance with a specific capacitance of 260 F/g at 1 A/g. Moreover, the assembled CAC700-4//CAC700-4 symmetric supercapacitor showed a high energy density of 14.3 Wh/kg at a power density of 250 W/kg in 6 M KOH electrolyte. It also has a capacitance retention of 95.5% after 10,000 cycles, indicating its excellent cycle stability. These results indicate that corncob-derived activated carbon provides the possible application of biomass waste in high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Konjac gel porous activated carbon (AC) has been prepared unprecedentedly using konjac as a natural carbon source via KOH for application in supercapacitors. The morphology and structure of the carbon materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). The unique porous structure and oxygen-enriched functional groups of the obtained material was beneficial for improving the capacitive performance; a high specific capacitance of 273.8 F g (1) with a current density of 1 Ag (1) and preferable stability over 5000 cycles (with a loss rate of only 3.7%) was exhibited in a 1 M KOH electrolyte solution. This work provides a new environmental-friendly, low cost, easy-to-use carbon source and also explores an economic and technologically novel strategy for carbon supercapacitors in applications relevant to environmental improvement. Abstract:Porous carbons derived from lignocellulosic biomass and their use in electrochemical applications are attracting a growing level of interest due to the sustainable nature of the materials and its favourable properties. This study investigates the influence of feedstocks and three activation methods (CO 2 , steam, and KOH) on the electrochemical properties of lignocellulosic biochars. The results showed that activated biochars derived from straw biomass had a higher specific capacitance than wood-derived activated biochars, despite lower electrical conductivity and porosity. Furthermore, chemical activation using KOH was found to increase the capacitance of activated biochars compared to physical activation using steam and CO 2, although sometimes at the expense of electrical conductivity. The study highlights the importance of carefully selecting the feedstocks and activation methods to optimise the electrochemical properties of biochar for potential use as a sustainable supercapacitor material.

Abstract:Biochar is rarely used in electrochemical energy storage, owing to its low specific surface area and poor electrochemical characteristics. To avoid the use of seriously corrosive chemicals for the development of pores, a green and facile one-step process was introduced to prepare biochar with high specific surface area without any additional chemicals, using three types of marine biomass waste (kelp, undaria pinnatifida, and Enteromorpha prolifera) as precursors and in-situ salts as activating agent. The biochar possessed high specific surface areas (621–1140 m2 g−1) and exhibited excellent energy storage characteristics (190.0–278.5 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1). Furthermore, the perfect cyclic stabilities were also demonstrated with the capacity retentions of 96%–98% after 5000 cycles. However, the washed marine-biomass-derived biochars were produced under the same conditions, but only possessed poor specific surface areas of 50–226 m2 g−1 and exhibited low capacitances of 23.4–105.3 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1. Therefore, the results demonstrated that the existence of in-situ salts on the marine algae could drastically promote the development of the porous structure, particularly micropores and mesopores. This study offers a promising synthesis for the application of biochar to the energy storage field.

Abstract:Recently, there has been a growing concern for environmental protection. Herein, an economical, sustainable, and green method for synthesizing activated carbon from waste using Sapindus peels and oyster shell powder is reported. Oyster shell powder decomposes into CO 2 at high temperatures and can be used as a physical activator. In this study, we discuss the difference between physical, chemical, and hybrid activation. Through proper treatment, the original specific surface area of 12.8 m 2 g −1 for Sapindus peel biochar was increased to 1175–1537 m 2 g −1 . In addition, activated carbons rich in 4 nm mesopores can be obtained by simple physical activation with oyster shell powder. In applications, the prepared electrodes showed a high specific capacitance of 258.1 F g −1 at 5 mV s −1 . The assembled supercapacitor also exhibited excellent electrochemical performance with a capacitance retention of 81.9 % after 5000 test cycles and a coulombic efficiency close to 100 % during the test.

Abstract:In the search of sustainable and low-cost materials, able to reinforce circular economy, different activated carbons were obtained from agroindustry wastes, by means of a chemical activation route, after the doping of their corresponding biochars with Fe-based species through an incipient wetness method. These activated carbons were assessed as active electrode materials in supercapacitors using various electrolytic media, including aqueous, organic and ionic liquid electrolytes. The electrochemical results obtained revealed an excellent performance for all porous materials and electrolytes under evaluation, reaching the highest specific capacitance of 334F/g at a current density of 0.02 A/g using an aqueous electrolyte. The highest specific capacitance using an organic electrolyte and an ionic liquid electrolyte were 214F/g and 166F/g, respectively. It was found that activated carbons with a relevant mesopores volume, and pore sizes around 1 nm, achieved a better specific capacitance when using aqueous and organic electrolytes. However, heteroatoms as oxygen and iron enhanced the electrochemical performance of the device using the ionic liquid as electrolyte, thus achieving the highest energy and power density values (up to 63 Wh/kg and 1606 W/kg, respectively) among the different systems evaluated.

Abstract:Onions, scientifically known as Allium cepa L., are commonly used as a vegetable and offer a variety of health benefits. However, this study explored a novel part of the onion plant, such as the flower seed cover often regarded as waste, by converting it into biochar (BC) via pyrolysis. Through careful optimization and activation with potassium hydroxide, the resulting novel biochar exhibited a unique graphitic nanosheet-like structure with an impressive surface area of 2538.31 m 2 /g. To serve as a control, rice straw, one of the most commonly used biomasses, was also activated using the same protocol. Various techniques, including XPS, HRTEM, SAED, FTIR, BET, XRD, and Raman, were used to comprehensively understand the surface and structural properties of the biochar. When the novel biochar was tested as an energy storage material, it exhibited a specific capacitance of 200.37 F/g at 1 A/g and 143.82 F/g at 5 A/g in a 1 M H 2 SO 4 electrolyte with a three-electrode system. In a two-electrode system, it showed 158 F/g at 1 A/g and 102 F/g at 5 A/g, indicating its effectiveness at high rates. The long-term cyclic stability analysis demonstrated 100 % capacity retention over 1000 cycles in the three-electrode system, and 90.77 % and 74.40 % retention after 5000 cycles and 10,000 cycles, respectively, in the two-electrode system. The fabricated symmetric supercapacitor yielded a power density of 500 W/kg and an energy density of 21.94 Wh/kg at a current density of 1 A/g. These findings provide valuable insights into the valorization of biomass in addressing concerns regarding the current energy storage dilemma.

Abstract:Biochar is an abundant, yet highly heterogenous, green alternative to the commercial activated carbons. As received, biochar possesses labile, soluble compounds that might obscure its utilisation in aqueous environments, for example, as porous electrodes for capacitive deionization. We investigated the effect of acid–base leaching on the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of straw biochar and commercial activated carbon. The findings suggested that the most commonly evaluated properties of the electrode materials (i.e., capacitance, resistance, functional groups, and porosity) do not unequivocally determine the electrode performance. The results point towards the importance of the more indefinite carbon properties, which differ between the pristine materials, arising from their inherent structural features, and could be related to their proton donating/ accepting ability.

Orange peel derived activated carbon for supercapacitor electrode material

Abstract:The study of processing biomass waste into porous carbon materials as active electrode materials for energy storage applications has been the subject of immense research interest due to its low cost, abundance of raw materials and environmental friendliness. In this work, orange peel-derived porous carbon material has been produced via carbonization followed by chemical activation with KOH (KOPC). The synthesized materials were characterized using different characterization techniques. Microstructural features confirm that the porous structure has pores in the KOPC material. The Fourier transform infrared and Raman analysis revealed that various functional groups, defects and pores exist in the KOPC sample, which could minimize the diffusion length and facilitate the ion diffusion path for improved electrochemical performances. The electrochemical measurements of KOPC were performed as electrode material with an extended and optimized potential window of 0.0 to −1.2 V. The KOPC-based electrode shows a specific capacitance of 267 F/g at 3 A/g with excellent coulombic efficiency and good cycling stability over 5000 charge–discharge cycles at 50 A/g. Thus, this study will utilize biomass wastes to make efficient energy storage devices.

Abstract:Bio-carbons possess few notable intrinsic properties such as natural abundance, accessibility, and physically templated resources with high porosity which energy storage devices require. This study looks at the functional bio-carbons prepared from Parthenium hysterophorus (leaves), Parthenium (flowers), Hybanthus , and Saccharum spontaneum plants as well as their energy storage capabilities. Physically activated bio-carbon materials were heated to 600 °C to produce ultrafine black powders with an amorphous nature as studied by XRD analysis. Porous yet well-connected morphology is understood from the FE-SEM analysis for all the samples which is a crucial factor for high charge transfer kinetics across the electrode. Analysis of BJH pore size, pore volume, and BET data confirms the degree of porosity in the material, revealing well-distributed mesopores with an average size of 20 nm and a surface area measuring 135 m 2 g −1 . Furthermore, the considerable electrochemical characteristics of these carbon compounds are advantageous when viewed alongside similar materials of this type. P, PH, SS, and H have specific capacitance values of 597 F g −1 , 423 F g −1 , 530 F g −1 , and 635 F g −1 accordingly. At room temperature, the activated carbon also had a strong electrical conductivity of roughly 10 −4 S cm −1 , which is required by commercial electrode materials to have superior rate capability.

Abstract:Preparing sustainable and highly efficient biochars as electrodes remains a challenge for building green energy storage devices. In this study, efficient carbon electrodes for supercapacitors were prepared via a facile and sustainable single-step pyrolysis method using spruce bark as a biomass precursor. Herein, biochars activated by KOH and ZnCl2 are explored as templates to be applied to prepare electrodes for supercapacitors. The physical and chemical properties of biochars for application as supercapacitors electrodes were strongly affected by factors such as the nature of the activators and the meso/microporosity, which is a critical condition that affects the internal resistance and diffusive conditions for the charge accumulation process in a real supercapacitor. Results confirmed a lower internal resistance and higher phase angle for devices prepared with ZnCl2 in association with a higher mesoporosity degree and distribution of Zn residues into the matrix. The ZnCl2-activated biochar electrodes’ areal capacitance reached values of 342 mF cm−2 due to the interaction of electrical double-layer capacitance/pseudocapacitance mechanisms in a matrix that favors hydrophilic interactions and the permeation of electrolytes into the pores. The results obtained in this work strongly suggest that the spruce bark can be considered a high-efficiency precursor for biobased electrode preparation to be employed in SCs.

Abstract:The N and B co-doped hierarchical porous carbon with excellent textured properties by using two-step of activation and hydrothermal post-treatment process using ammonium pentaborate tetrahydrate (NH4B5O8·4H2O) as both nitrogen and boron source are developed. The results showed that BNAC-3 has the maximum surface area (2471 m2/g) caused by the highest degree of micro/mesopores (0.82 and 0.35 cm3/g) and the linked 3D network are advantageous for the circulation of electrolytes and electrostatic adsorption. The contribution of Faradaic pseudocapacitance may be caused by high B (3.12 wt percent) and N (2.02 wt percent) contents of BNAC-3. Additionally, BNAC-3 exhibits excellent electrochemical efficiency with an ultra-high specific ability of 369 F/g at 1 A/g current density (CD) and maintains 240 F/g at 20 A/g in three-electrode systems. Notably, in a two-electrode device, maximum energy density can be almost 12.0 W h/kg at a power density (PD) of 375 W/kg.

Abstract:Here we report a simple, low-cost and environment friendly method, in which Black locust seed dregs and potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) are used as starting raw materials and activation agent. The hierarchically porous carbons (BDPC) with high special surface area and abundant mesopores (SBET = 2010.1 m2 g-1 and Vmeso = 1.457 cm3 g-1) are obtained through hydrothermal treatment and chemical activation. The BDPC electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performances by virtue of unique architecture and heteroatoms pseudocapacitance contribution. In the three-electrode system, the optimized carbon material (BDPC-2) achieves a high specific capacitance of 333 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 and displays the high rate capability (81.1% capacitance retention at 100 A g-1) in 6 M KOH electrolyte. The symmetric supercapacitor based BDPC-2 exhibits energy density as high as 26.2 Wh kg-1 (at a power density of 0.79 kW kg-1) and excellent long-term cycling stability (only 8% decrease after 10,000 cycles) in 6 M KOH.
Sustainable development of biomass-derived activated carbon through chemical and physical activations and its effect on the physicochemical and electrochemical activity

Abstract:Activated carbon derived from biomass waste and their application as supercapacitor electrodes have aroused a considerable research interest in recent years. In this work, we demonstrate the use of Coffea canephora leaf (CCL) waste for the preparation of activated carbon as supercapacitor electrodes via chemical activation with straightforward pyrolysis at high temperatures for the first time. Potassium hydroxide with three different concentrations, i.e. 0.1 M, 0.3 M, and 0.5 M, was used as activating agent. The as-prepared activated carbon using 0.3 M KOH (CCL-0.3) displayed good physicochemical properties and exhibited superior electrochemical performance than the other two samples (0.1 and 0.5 M). CCL-0.3 achieved the specific capacitances of 297 F g −1 and 220 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 in 1 M H 2 SO 4 and 1 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolytes, respectively. Moreover, CCL-0.3 in 1 M H 2 SO 4 exhibits the equivalent series resistance ( R s ) and the charge transfer resistance ( R ct ) value of CCL-0.3 in 1 M H 2 SO 4 of 0.73 Ω and 4.9 Ω, respectively. Additionally, this study provides strategies for preparing activated carbon as supercapacitor electrode materials with superior performance via chemical activation with straightforward pyrolysis for the renewable energy storage devices.
