Abstract:With the depletion of fossil fuels causing a series of energy and environmental problems, accelerating the development of green and clean energy is urgent. Supercapacitors are favored by researchers due to their excellent performance such as high specific energy and good stability. Biochar is obtained from biomass materials after pre-carbonization and activation treatment, with developed pore size, high active specific surface area, and abundant resources. It has good application prospects as a supercapacitor material. This article provides a brief introduction to biomass charcoal materials and introduces the preparation methods of biomass charcoal and its research progress in the field of supercapacitors. Finally, it looks forward to the development trend of biomass charcoal materials, providing a reference for further improving the research application of biomass charcoal materials in the field of supercapacitors in the future.

Abstract:<p>The demand for sustainable and renewable energy sources has gained tremendous research attention around the world over the past years. Supercapacitor, among lots of energy storage devices, has been attracted many researches for the advantages of high power density, fast charge-discharge capability and cycle stability. Compared with other carbon materials, biochar materials have attracted special attention as efficient, low-cost, active materials for energy storage. In this work, the typical preparation and modification methods of biochar as the supercapacitor electrode are classified. the factors influencing the electrochemical performance of biochar, such as specific surface area (SSA), pore structure, surface chemical modification and conductivity are systematically discussed. This work studied the relationship between carbon with mesopore and hierarchical pore structure and the electrochemical performance of biochar electrode materials. The advantages and disadvantages of introducing heteroatoms and functional materials on the surface of biochar for supercapacitor electrode are analyzed. Meanwhile, future development trends for biochar materials in this field are also prospected.</p>

Nitrogen and Sulfur Co-doped Hierarchical Porous Biochar Derived from the Pyrolysis of Mantis Shrimp Shell for Supercapacitor Electrodes

Abstract:The preparation of high-value biochar as a supercapacitor is a promising way for biomass utilization. In this work, a self-activation method was proposed to prepare nitrogen and sulfur co-doping hierarchical porous biochar by using mantis shrimp shell as carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur precursors. The porosity and surface chemical properties of biochar were adjusted upon different temperatures. It was found that the obtained biochar had a dendritic and uniform morphology, in which micro-, meso-, and macropores were interconnected regularly in the structure, and the nitrogen and sulfur heteroatoms were successfully homogeneously introduced into the carbon frameworks. On the basis of electrochemical tests, novel shell biochar with an activation temperature of 750 degrees C demonstrated the highest specific capacitance, which was 201 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1) in a 6 M KOH electrolyte, due to the large BET surface area of 401 m(2) g(-1), and high nitrogen (8.2 wt %) and sulfur content (1.16 wt %). The in situ template approach from natural biomass provided tremendous potential for the active electrode materials of supercapacitors.
Heteroatom-Doped Hierarchically Porous Biochar for Supercapacitor Application and Phenol Pollutant Remediation

Abstract:Biochars are considered as promising materials in energy storage and environmental remediation because of their unique physicochemical properties and low cost. However, the fabrication of multifunctional biochar materials with a well-developed hierarchical porous structure as well as self-doped functionalities via a facile strategy remains a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a heteroatom-doped porous biochar, prepared by a hydrothermal pretreatment followed by a molten salt activation route. With the creation of a high specific surface area (1501.9 m2/g), a hierarchical porous structure, and the incorporation of oxygen-/nitrogen-functional groups, the as-prepared biochar (BC-24) exhibits great potential for supercapacitor application and organic pollutant elimination. The assembled biochar electrode delivers a specific capacitance of 378 F/g at 0.2 A/g with a good rate capability of 198 F/g at 10 A/g, and excellent cycling stability with 94.5% capacitance retention after 10,000 recycles. Moreover, BC-24 also exhibits superior catalytic activity for phenol degradation through peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation. The phenol (0.2 mM) can be effectively absorbed and then completely degraded within only 25 min over a wide pH range with low catalyst and PDS dosages. More importantly, TOC analysis indicates 81.7% of the phenol is mineralized within 60 min, confirming the effectiveness of the BC-24/PDS system. Quenching experiments and EPR measurements reveal that SO4·− and ·OH as well as 1O2 are involved in the phenol degradation, while the non-radical pathway plays the dominant role. This study provides valuable insights into the preparation of cost-effective carbon materials for supercapacitor application and organic contaminant remediation.

Abstract:Preparing sustainable and highly efficient biochars as electrodes remains a challenge for building green energy storage devices. In this study, efficient carbon electrodes for supercapacitors were prepared via a facile and sustainable single-step pyrolysis method using spruce bark as a biomass precursor. Herein, biochars activated by KOH and ZnCl2 are explored as templates to be applied to prepare electrodes for supercapacitors. The physical and chemical properties of biochars for application as supercapacitors electrodes were strongly affected by factors such as the nature of the activators and the meso/microporosity, which is a critical condition that affects the internal resistance and diffusive conditions for the charge accumulation process in a real supercapacitor. Results confirmed a lower internal resistance and higher phase angle for devices prepared with ZnCl2 in association with a higher mesoporosity degree and distribution of Zn residues into the matrix. The ZnCl2-activated biochar electrodes’ areal capacitance reached values of 342 mF cm−2 due to the interaction of electrical double-layer capacitance/pseudocapacitance mechanisms in a matrix that favors hydrophilic interactions and the permeation of electrolytes into the pores. The results obtained in this work strongly suggest that the spruce bark can be considered a high-efficiency precursor for biobased electrode preparation to be employed in SCs.

Abstract:New carbon-based materials have drawn tremendous attention in several technological applications. Here, the synthesis of graphene-containing biochar was prepared through carbonation and activation processes, using pre-oxidized magnolia flowers. In particular, the activation method was conducted in copper foil under high pressure, which led to the high biochar yield and excellent electrical conductivity of biochar for graphene-containing hybrid. Furthermore, heteroatoms (including nitrogen and oxygen) were successfully doped into the biochar. As a result, the hybrid demonstrated excellent electrical properties, at high nitrogen (1.02 %) and oxygen levels (14.80 %). The as-prepared biochar was used to produce an all solid state symmetric superconductor with a capacitance of 261.8 F g-1 at a specific current of 0.5 A g-1 , and energy density of 6.9 Wh kg-1 at powder density of 20 kW kg-1 .The enhanced electrochemical performance was attributed to the positive effect of synergy between highly conductive graphene-containing biochar and heteroatoms doping

Abstract:Konjac gel porous activated carbon (AC) has been prepared unprecedentedly using konjac as a natural carbon source via KOH for application in supercapacitors. The morphology and structure of the carbon materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). The unique porous structure and oxygen-enriched functional groups of the obtained material was beneficial for improving the capacitive performance; a high specific capacitance of 273.8 F g (1) with a current density of 1 Ag (1) and preferable stability over 5000 cycles (with a loss rate of only 3.7%) was exhibited in a 1 M KOH electrolyte solution. This work provides a new environmental-friendly, low cost, easy-to-use carbon source and also explores an economic and technologically novel strategy for carbon supercapacitors in applications relevant to environmental improvement. Abstract:Biochar derived from biomass has shown potential as electrode materials for supercapacitors, but controlling its pore structure is a challenge. Additionally, coking issues have limited the industrial application of heavy bio-oil, which could be used to prepare carbonous biochar as a substitute for biomass. Herein, to widen the utilization of bio-oil and to control the pore structure, this study introduces a novel approach to utilize heavy bio-oil and regulate pore structure by combining the hard template method and activation method, in which calcium citrate tetrahydrate (CCT), calcium acetate and calcium carbonate act as templates and K 2 CO 3 acts as activator. Through CCT-assisted template carbonization at 700 °C and K 2 CO 3 activation with a mass ratio of 1:2, a hierarchical porous biochar (CCT-700–1:2) with a specific surface area of 2213.09 m 2 g −1 was successfully synthesized. The CCT-700–1:2 electrode shows outstanding capacitive performance with a specific capacitance of 213.86 F g −1 at 0.5 A. The assembled solid-state symmetric supercapacitor displays impressive rate capability, maintaining the capacity retention ratio being 69.7 % at 20 A g −1 . Furthermore, it demonstrates exceptional cycle stability and the capacitance retention is around 98 % even after 60,000 cycles. The symmetric supercapacitors also show the high energy density being 16.36 W h kg −1 at 250 W kg −1 . This study presents a hopeful method for producing sustainable carbon materials by bio-oil used as energy storage devices, enhancing the potential utilizations of biomass derived products in the area of supercapacitors.

In Situ, Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon Derived from Mixed Biomass as Ultra-High-Performance Supercapacitor

Abstract:How to address the destruction of the porous structure caused by elemental doping in biochar derived from biomass is still challenging. In this work, the in-situ nitrogen-doped porous carbons (ABPCs) were synthesized for supercapacitor electrode applications through pre-carbonization and activation processes using nitrogen-rich pigskin and broccoli. Detailed characterization of ABPCs revealed that the best simple ABPC-4 exhibited a super high specific surface area (3030.2-3147.0 m2 g-1) and plentiful nitrogen (1.35-2.38 wt%) and oxygen content (10.08-15.35 wt%), which provided more active sites and improved the conductivity and electrochemical activity of the material. Remarkably, ABPC-4 showed an outstanding specific capacitance of 473.03 F g-1 at 1 A g-1. After 10,000 cycles, its capacitance retention decreased by only 4.92% at a current density of 10 A g-1 in 6 M KOH. The assembled symmetric supercapacitor ABPC-4//ABPC-4 achieved a power density of 161.85 W kg-1 at the maximum energy density of 17.51 Wh kg-1 and maintained an energy density of 6.71 Wh kg-1 when the power density increased to 3221.13 W kg-1. This study provides a mixed doping approach to achieve multi-element doping, offering a promising way to apply supercapacitors using mixed biomass.

Abstract:Biomass-derived porous carbon materials are widely used as electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their low cost, wide availability, rich pore structures, and good stability. Different biomass-derived porous carbon materials have variations in compositions and structures, resulting in different electrochemical performances. Here, four types of biomass-derived porous carbon materials, namely corn stalk-derived porous carbon (CC), bamboo-derived porous carbon, peanut shell-derived porous carbon and rice straw-derived porous carbon, were prepared using raw materials such as corn stalk powders, bamboo powders, peanut shell powders and rice straw powders, respectively. The preparation process was carried out through high-temperature carbonization and activation methods. The prepared carbon electrode samples were characterized by XRD, Raman, SEM and BET, and the three-electrode performances and the assembled symmetric supercapacitors were also investigated by a series of electrochemical testing techniques. The results indicate that among the four biomass-derived porous carbon materials, CC exhibits the best electrochemical performances, and the specific capacitance is 103 F g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 . The assembled symmetric supercapacitors demonstrate a specific capacitance of 99 F g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 , a specific mass power density of 25 W kg −1 and a specific mass-energy density of 3.44 Wh kg −1 . After 20,000 cycles, the capacitance retention rate remains at 104%, which shows an increase. Therefore, the electrode samples prepared from corn stalk-derived porous carbon exhibit high specific energy, high specific power and long cycle life and have promising prospects for development in supercapacitors.

Abstract:Using Euryale ferox shells as biomass raw material, porous carbon samples were prepared by conventional hydrothermal carbonization and microwave-assisted hydrothermal carbonization followed by KOH activation. Effects of hydrothermal heating method and reaction time on the formation of porous carbon structure were systematically studied. It is found that compared with conventional hydrothermal carbonization, microwave-assisted hydrothermal carbonization can rapidly promote the hydrolysis of biomass and form hydrochar with certain pore structure. This is conducive to improving the activation efficiency and preparing porous carbon with rich pore structure. At the same time, microwave-assisted hydrothermal carbonization can improve the content of oxygen-containing functional groups of porous carbon in a short time. In a three-electrode system, PC-M10m (405 F g−1) has a higher specific capacitance than PC-H6h (388 F g−1) at a current density of 0.5 A g−1. PC-M10m charges and discharges 20,000 times at 10 A g−1 current density, and the capacitance retention rate is 100%. This work provides useful results for developing suitable hydrothermal carbonization process for efficient conversion of biomass into high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Recently, there has been a growing concern for environmental protection. Herein, an economical, sustainable, and green method for synthesizing activated carbon from waste using Sapindus peels and oyster shell powder is reported. Oyster shell powder decomposes into CO 2 at high temperatures and can be used as a physical activator. In this study, we discuss the difference between physical, chemical, and hybrid activation. Through proper treatment, the original specific surface area of 12.8 m 2 g −1 for Sapindus peel biochar was increased to 1175–1537 m 2 g −1 . In addition, activated carbons rich in 4 nm mesopores can be obtained by simple physical activation with oyster shell powder. In applications, the prepared electrodes showed a high specific capacitance of 258.1 F g −1 at 5 mV s −1 . The assembled supercapacitor also exhibited excellent electrochemical performance with a capacitance retention of 81.9 % after 5000 test cycles and a coulombic efficiency close to 100 % during the test.

Abstract:Catalytic graphitization opens a route to prepare graphitic carbon under fairly mild conditions. Biomass has been identified as a potentially attractive precursor for graphitic carbon materials. In this work, corn starch was used as carbon source to prepare hollow graphitic carbon microspheres by pyrolysis after mixing impregnation with nitrate salts, and the surface of these carbon microspheres is covered with controllable pores structure. Under optimal synthesis conditions, the prepared carbon microspheres show a uniform pore size distribution and high degree of graphitization. When tested as electrode materials for supercapacitor with organic electrolyte, the electrode exhibited a superior specific capacitance of 144.8 F g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 , as well as large power density and a capacitance retention rate of 93.5% after 1,000 cycles in galvanostatic charge/discharge test at 1.0 A g −1 . The synthesis extends use of the renewable nature resources and sheds light on developing new routes to design graphitic carbon microspheres.

Potassium gluconate-assisted synthesis of biomass derived porous carbon for high-performance supercapacitor

Abstract:Porous carbon has attracted enormous attentions as electrode materials for supercapacitor due to its sufficient porosity and large specific surface area. In this paper, we reported a convenient approach for the preparation of activated porous carbon (APC) by one-step activation method using bacterial cellulose as carbon source and potassium gluconate as activator. The obtained porous carbon possesses a unique porous framework with suitable specific surface area and rich oxygen content. Benefiting from the unique structure, the obtained electrode shows a high specific capacitance of 437 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 and excellent electrochemical stability. More interestingly, the constructed APC-700//APC-700 symmetrical supercapacitor exhibits a high energy density of 23.5 Wh kg −1 and good cycling stability in 1 M Na 2 SO 4 aqueous electrolyte. Therefore, the work provides a new and facile method to prepare porous carbon-based electrode materials from biomass for supercapacitor.

Abstract:Supercapacitor is a kind of energy storage device between secondary battery and physical capacitor, which has the advantages of fast charging and discharging speed, high power density and excellent cycle stability. Compared with combustion batteries, the energy density of supercapacitors is low and needs to be further improved. The electrochemical performance of supercapacitors mainly depends on the electrode materials. Porous carbon (PCs) materials are currently one of the most widely used supercapacitor electrode materials due to their high specific surface area, good chemical stability and low cost. The best morphology of the sample was obtained when the temperature was 800 °C and the alkali carbon ratio was 1:1. Specimen PC800-1 has the largest specific surface area of 1894.97 m 2 g −1 . In the three-electrode test system, the specific capacitance of sample PC800-1 is as high as 217.5 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , and the multiplicity performance is 46.1% at 20 F g −1 . In the two-electrode test system, the sample has a specific capacitance of 115 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , an energy density of 13.33 Wh kg −1 , and a power density of 499.88 W kg −1 . This green and efficient synthesis of sodium lignosulfonate-based is a promising alternative strategy for the production of carbon-based supercapacitors.

Abstract:In the face of the contradiction between the shortage of fossil raw materials, global warming and growing energy demand, it is of great practical significance to apply biomass, which is widely available in nature, environmentally friendly and renewable, to energy storage. Based on the coupling mechanism of pore-regulation and N -doping, this study implements pre-carbonization through microphase separation engineering in the chitosan (CS) and aniline (AN) co-hydrothermal. Using hydrochar as the precursor, porous carbon with good electrochemical properties has been prepared by a multi-step process consisting of KOH activation, pyrolysis, pickling and water washing. The CS/AN co-doped porous carbons (1830.08–2576.53 m 2 /g) show an enhancement of 8.48%–52.73 % in specific surface area compared to the CS porous carbon (1687.02 m 2 /g). The hierarchical network structure of the micro-mesoporous interconnects enables fast ion transport and the ultra-micropores further increase the specific capacitance of the electrodes. Theoretical calculation shows that N doping can effectively activate the chemically inert carbon structure and enhance the adsorption capacity of electrolyte ions, thus increasing the specific capacitance. Using 6 M KOH as the electrolyte, C S-AN60-220-800 exhibits a specific capacitance of 368.6 F/g (1.0 A/g) in the three-electrode system. In the two-electrode system, the supercapacitor device constructed with C S-AN60-220-800 demonstrates a capacitance retention of 95.32 % (after 10,000 cycles) along with an energy density of 14.16 Wh/kg (with a power density of 125 W/kg), which is at a high level among similar biomass symmetric supercapacitors. Abstract:Oxygen-rich hierarchical porous carbons (PCs) were successfully prepared through the co-carbonization of mesophase pitch (MP) and biomass sawdust (BS), following KOH activation. The PCs possessed a high specific surface area and a considerable amount of oxygen functional groups on the surface due to BS containing hierarchical porous structures and an abundant of heteroatoms. Moreover, the PCs exhibited high graphitization degree due to MP with a great deal of polynuclear aromatic structural units for easily forming the graphitized structures. The results showed that the PC-5/5 obtained from the co-carbonization of MP and BS with weight ratio of 5/5 had a high oxygen functional groups (1.43 mmol/g C-OH, 0.65 mmol/g RO-C=O, 0.66 mmol/g O-C=O from Boehm titration results) and its surface area reached to 2361 m2/g. As an electrode material for supercapacitor, the prepared electrode from PC-5/5 exhibited a favorable specific capacitance of 324 F/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g in 6 mol/L KOH electrolyte. The electrode also demonstrated excellent rate ability with a retention rate of 75% when the current density increases from 0.5 to 5 A/g, and remained 95% of the capacitance at 5 A/g after 500 cycles. Therefore, the PCs obtained by co-carbonization of MP and BS have high potential as electrode materials. This route not only enhanced the benefit from biomass wastes, but also reduced the cost of producing electrode materials for supercapacitor.

Abstract:The preparation of activated carbon by complex and expensive nitrogen doping and activation process has been studied extensively. N-doped activated biochar or carbon material prepared from renewable and low-cost biomass has arisen more and more attention due to the hierarchical porous structure and abundant nitrogenous functional groups in the application of supercapacitors. Herein, a method for preparation of in-situ nitrogen doped activated carbon derived from bean pulp (BPC) by one-step carbonization and CO2 activation at 1073 K was proposed. The morphological structure, specific surface area (SSA), pore size and nitrogen-containing functional group compounds could be controlled by the adjustment of CO2 concentration. The maximum SSA could be up to 558.2 m(2) g(-1) for BPC. The N content increased from 5.0% to 10.0% with the increase of CO2 concentration from 0 to 50 vol%. In addition, pyridine, pyrrole, graphite, and nitrous oxide were detected and analyzed, in which pyridine and pyrrole nitrogen enhance the pseudocapacitance. A maximum specific capacitance of BPC-50 reached 106 F g(-1) at 0.25 A g(-1). The capacitance retention maintained 93% at 10 A g(-1) after 20,000 cycles in the symmetrical supercapacitor with a 6 M KOH electrolyte. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:With the implementation of carbon neutrality, more and more researchers are devoted to the development of biomass-based porous carbon materials using agricultural and forestry wastes for energy storage applications. However, biomass-derived carbon materials are still suffering from structural instability and difficult to regulate the pore structure, so it is very essential to study the regulation of pore structure in activation process of biochar. Therefore, this work developed an approach to modulate the pore structure of biomass porous carbon. The pyrolyzed biochar was primary activated by ZnCl 2 to form the intermediate FC, and the FC was secondary activated by the impregnation method with the addition of trace KOH to form the graded porous carbon FCK- x . The prepared porous carbon exhibited a large specific surface area (2845 m 2 g −1 ) and a large pore volume (1.43 cm 3 g −1 ), which is very favorable for efficient ion transport in the three-electrode system, FCK-0.6 exhibited a specific capacitance of 321.7 F/g at 1A/g and the assembled supercapacitor exhibited high capacitance retention (95.17%) and charge retention (85%). This work provides a feasible way to modulate biomass pore structure.
