Abstract:Amorphous mesoporous manganese oxides (MnOx) with different microstructures were synthesized via a facile redox method between manganese acetate and potassium permanganate by modulating the addition sequence of the precursors and directly used for catalytic decomposition of ozone. The as-prepared catalysts were characterized by N-2 physisorption, SEM, TEM, XRD, Raman, H-2-TPR, O-2-TPD, TGA, and XPS. Amorphous mesoporous MnOx had more surface oxygen vacancies and larger specific surface area than calcined MnOx with high crystallinity and exhibited superior ozone decomposition activity at room temperature. Kinetic study and characterization results revealed that the lower oxidation state of Mn resulting from mixed Mn2+, Mn3+ and Mn4+ in amorphous mesoporous MnOx was more favorable for activating ozone towards high initial ozone conversion. Moreover, the catalytic stability of amorphous mesoporous MnOx strongly depended on the relative humidity, and the elevation of the oxidation state and the accumulation of surface adsorbed water molecules possibly led to the catalyst deactivation. These results may shed new light on the design of novel amorphous manganese-based catalysts for ozone decomposition.
Simultaneously Catalytic Decomposition of Formaldehyde and Ozone over Manganese Cerium Oxides at Room Temperature: Promotional Effect of Relative Humidity on the MnCeOx Solid Solution

Abstract:Manganese cerium oxides were synthesized by Pechini method and were used for investigating the performance of solid solution and the influence of water vapor presence on catalytic decomposition of formaldehyde and ozone at room temperature. Compared with the pristine manganese oxides and cerium dioxide, MnCeOx catalyst exhibited the best performance on HCHO oxidation and excellent ozone decomposition under dry air conditions although the CO2 yield is much lower than that of the solo cerium oxide. The as-prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, N-2 adsorption-desorption, H-2-TPR and O-2-TPD techniques. These characterization results revealed that the MnCeOx catalyst formed a solid solution of manganese and cerium, and exhibited relatively abundance oxygen vacancies and the most surface lattice oxygen species, enhancing remarkable adsorption and redox properties. MnCeOx catalyst has similar to 100% HCHO conversion into CO2 in the catalytic activity test while the relative humidity is higher than 50% in this work, which could be suitable for indoor air purification. In situ DRIFTS results demonstrated that this excellent performance of HCHO complete oxidation is attributed to the continuously replenished surface hydroxyl groups generated from the interaction of water vapor and ozone on the surface of MnCeOx catalyst. This composite oxide is a promising catalyst for removing formaldehyde and ozone in the indoor environment.
Highly Efficient Ozone Decomposition Against Harsh Environments over Long-Term Stable Amorphous MnOx Catalysts

Abstract:Ground-level ozone causes great harm both to ecosystems and human health and should be strictly controlled. Manganese oxide (MnOx) is severely limited by catalyst deactivation due to environmental variations such as humidity and temperature. Herein, amorphous MnOx, prepared via a simple and mild redox reaction showed complete elimination of 40 ppm ozone at a high weight hourly space velocity of 600,000 mL.g(-1) h(-1), under the mild environmental condition with the relative humidity of 50 % and 25 ?C. It also kept predominant activity and remarkable stability even at harsh environmental conditions of low temperature (0 ?C) or high humidity (90 %). The superior ozone decomposition performance of MnOx resulted from the abundant grain boundaries and manganese redox pairs, which promoted oxygen vacancies generation and electron transfer. The findings may shed new light on the design of highly efficient and stable MnO(x )catalysts and are expected to drive great advances for large-scale practical applications.

Abstract:Lichen-like porous manganese oxides (MnOx) with birnessite-type structure, which were assembled with curled nanosheets (less than 10 nm in thickness), were deposited in situ on the surface of activated carbon (AC) via facile reduction of permanganate by AC, and were tested for the decomposition of ozone, a common air pollutant. Despite the low Mn loading (typically 0.04%-0.14%), the as-synthesized MnOx/AC catalysts exhibited high catalytic activity and stability for ozone decomposition at room temperature and high relative humidity, which can be attributed to the enrichment of the Mn element on the catalyst surface and a well-organized porous surface morphology of MnOx.

Abstract:Cost-effective and low-toxicity manganese oxides (MnOx) have been extensively used for environmental remediation. However, their unsatisfactory activity and intrinsically poor electronic conductivity hamper the application and leave considerable room for improvement. Utilizing defect engineering and morphology controlling, we herein designed MnO2−x rattle-type microspheres with plenty of oxygen-defective MnO2 nanoflakes vertically aligned on the surface (OD-MnO2−x-RM) as a novel peroxomonosulfate (PMS) activator for bisphenol A (BPA) removal. Benefiting from the proper presence of oxygen vacancies (OVs) and unique nanoarchitecture, the OD-MnO2−x-RM (40 min) outperformed all other benchmark catalysts [such as MnO2@MnCO3, MnO2-RM, OD-MnO2−x-RM (20, 60, and 80 min)]. The turnover frequency (TOF) of optimized OD-MnO2−x-RM catalyst reaches up to 83.3 min−1, making it one of the best-performing Mn-based catalysts ever reported for BPA removal via PMS activation. More interestingly, unlike other reports, 1O2, instead of OH and SO4−, was found to be the main reactive specie responsible for BPA oxidation. Various experimental and density functional theory (DFT) findings indicate that these surface oxygen-deficient sites with abundant localized electrons not only accelerate the interfacial electronic conduction and charge rearrangement but also favor chemisorption of PMS, however OVs in excess are superfluous and even counteractive for reaction kinetics. This structure arrangement simultaneously optimizes the active site exposure, changes the active species binding, transfer, and activation, which may pave a new path for rationally fabricating transition metal oxide-based catalysts for water treatment.

Abstract:In the present study, mesoporous manganese dioxide catalysts with large high specific surface area, pore volume and large pore size structure were synthesised using the nano-casting method with a mesoporous structure of silica SBA-15 as a hard template. Therefore, the physical and chemical properties of mesoporous MnO2 were characterised by XRD, FT-IR, Raman, UV–Vis, N2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, EDS, TEM, TG and XPS. In this study, the oxidative reactivity of MnO2 corresponding to methyl orange (MO) and oxalic acid (OA) was assessed. MnO2 was found to contain the most abundant oxygen vacancies and easily reducible surface adsorbed oxygen (Olatt), which facilitates the catalytic utilisation of ozone. As a result, the highest catalytic performance was achieved for methyl orange and oxalic acid, with degradation efficiencies of 98.37% and 92.96%. This present study deepens our understanding of manganese dioxide catalyzed ozone and provides a reference for improving process efficiency.

Abstract:MnO2 catalysts have been widely studied for catalytic gaseous ozone decomposition. However, their poor moisture resistance often leads to undesirable catalytic effects in the presence of high humidity. In this study, a novel catalyst with gamma-like MnO2 was synthesized using the selective dissolution method on LaMnO3 pemvskites. The as-prepared catalyst exhibited quite stable ozone conversion of similar to 90% within 12 h under 75% relative humidity (400-800 ppm of ozone, 30 degrees C, 150 000 mL.g(-1).h(-1) of WHSV). In contrast, traditional gamma-MnO2 catalyst showed deficient resistance to H2O and sensitivity to space velocity. Detailed characterizations showed that the larger number of oxygen vacancies induced by structure reconstruction of the gamma-like MnO2 and residual La3+ cations facilitated ozone decomposition in humid atmosphere. Finally, the reaction rate of ozone decomposition was proposed by a kinetic study, which further proved that the amount and hydrophilicity of oxygen vacancies are the determinants of the first-order reaction rate constant.
Ce–Fe–Mn Ternary Mixed-Oxide Catalysts for Catalytic Decomposition of Ozone at Ambient Temperatures

Abstract:Ce-modified Mn-Fe mixed-oxide catalysts were prepared by a citric acid sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman, N-2 adsorption-desorption, infrared spectra, H-2 temperature-programmed reduction and thermogravimetric analyses. Their catalytic properties were investigated in ozone (O-3) decomposition reaction. Results show that the small amount of rare earth metal Ce added during Mn-Fe (FM) mixed-oxide synthesis greatly improves the catalytic performance in O-3 decomposition. Among the prepared catalysts, the C-0.04(FM)(0.96) mixed-oxide catalyst exhibits the highest catalytic activity and stability. The O-3 conversion over C-0.04(FM)(0.96 )is 98% after 24 h reaction at 25 degrees C under dry condition, and that over FM decreases to 90% after 16 h reaction. At 0 degrees C, the O-3 conversion over Ca-0.04(FM)(0.96) is 95% after 7 h reaction under dry condition, and that over FM slows down to 70%. Under humid condition (RH = 65%), the O-3 conversion over C-0.04(FM)(0.96) is 63% after 6.5 h reaction at 25 degrees C, while that over FM decreases to 55%. When Ce is doped into Mn-Fe mixed oxides, the small amount of Ce enters the crystal lattice of MnO2, and partial Fe is separated to form Fe2O3. This changes cause lattice distortion and increase defects and enable the as-synthesized Ce-Fe-Mn ternary mixed-oxide catalysts to acquire additional oxygen vacancies and increase their specific surface area, thereby increasing the number of reaction sites and enhancing the catalytic performance of the catalysts for O-3 decomposition. Efficient Ozone Elimination over MnO2 Via Double Moisture-Resistance Protection of Active Carbon and CeO2

Abstract:The widespread ozone (O3) pollution is extremely hazardous to human health and ecosystems. Catalytic decomposition into O2 is the most promising method to eliminate ambient O3, while the fast deactivation of catalysts under humid conditions remains the primary challenge for their application. Herein, we elaborately developed a splendidly active and stable Mn-based catalyst with double hydrophobic protection of active carbon (AC) and CeO2 (CeMn@AC), which possessed abundant interfacial oxygen vacancies and excellent desorption of peroxide intermediates (O22-). Under extremely humid (RH = 90%) conditions and a high space velocity of 1200 L h-1 g-1, the optimized CeMn@AC achieved nearly 100% O3 conversion (140 h) at 5 ppm, showing unprecedented catalytic activity and moisture resistance toward O3 decomposition. In situ DRIFTS and theory calculations confirmed that the exceptional moisture resistance of CeMn@AC was ascribed to the double protection effect of AC and CeO2, which cooperatively prevented the competitive adsorption of H2O molecules and their accumulation on the active sites of MnO2. AC provided a hydrophobic reaction environment, and CeO2 further alleviated moisture deterioration of the MnO2 particles exposed on the catalyst surface via the moisture-resistant oxygen vacancies of MnO2-CeO2 crystal boundaries. This work offers a simple and efficient strategy for designing moisture-resistant materials and facilitates the practical application of the O3 decomposition catalysts in various environments.
Co-doped cryptomelane-type manganese oxide in situ grown on a nickel foam substrate for high humidity ozone decomposition

Abstract:Monolithic catalysts with excellent O3 catalytic decomposition performance were prepared by in situ loading of Co-doped KMn8O16 on the surface of nickel foam. The triple-layer structure with Co-doped KMn8O16/Ni6MnO8/Ni foam was grown spontaneously on the surface of nickel foam by tuning the molar ratio of KMnO4 to Co(NO3)2·6H2O precursors. Importantly, the formed Ni6MnO8 structure between KMn8O16 and nickel foam during in situ synthesis process effectively protected nickel foam from further etching, which significantly enhanced the reaction stability of catalyst. The optimum amount of Co doping in KMn8O16 was available when the molar ratio of Mn to Co species in the precursor solution was 2:1. And the Mn2Co1 catalyst had abundant oxygen vacancies and excellent hydrophobicity, thus creating outstanding O3 decomposition activity. The O3 conversion under dry conditions and relative humidity of 65%, 90% over a period of 5 hr was 100%, 94% and 80% with the space velocity of 28,000 hr-1, respectively. The in situ constructed Co-doped KMn8O16/Ni foam catalyst showed the advantages of low price and gradual applicability of the preparation process, which provided an opportunity for the design of monolithic catalyst for O3 catalytic decomposition.

Abstract:Ground-level ozone pollution poses significant risks to both ecosystems and human health, necessitating the implementation of effective control strategies. This investigtion concentrated on a monolithic ozone degradation catalyst composed of powdered α-MnO2 , throughly examining its catalytic performance, moisture resistance, and stability. The monolithic catalyst demonstrated optimal catalytic activity, achieving an ozone conversion rate of 99% following calcination at 400°C for a duration of three hours. Comprehensive characterization of the catalyst's properties at pH levels of 1, 4, and 7 revealed that residual acid ions negatively impacted catalytic activity. Notably, the catalyst at pH 7 exhibited more oxygen vacancies, which correlated with the reduction of sulfate ion residues and the increased availability of more active sites during the washing process. Under conditons of pH 7 and a space velocity of 900,000 h-1, the α-MnO2 catalyst achieved conversion rates of 100% and 95% for 18 ppm ozone within three hours under 90% relative humidity and dry conditions, respectively. Furthermore, the monolithic catalyst demonstrated remarkable moisture resistance, performing effectively in continuous alternating humidity cycle tests and maintaining high humidity. It sustained 90% ozone decomposition efficiency after three hours of testing in high humidity conditions. Additionally, the α-MnO2 monolithic catalyst showed excellent stability, with an ozone conversion rate exceeding 99% throughout a 50-hour testindg period. These results highlight the significant potential of the α-MnO2 monolithic catalyst for applications in ozone removal.

Interface Reconfiguration of MnCO3/Mn3O4 Heterostructure Enhances the Ozone Decomposition in the Entire Humidity Range

Abstract:The catalytic efficiency of manganese-based catalysts in practical ozone decomposition applications is limited by challenging desorption of intermediate oxygen species and competitive adsorption of H2O molecules in humid environments. In this work, MnCO3/Mn3O4 composites with heterogeneous structures were synthesized through a facile one-step strategy. The obtained MnCO3/Mn3O4-1/2 catalyst exhibited high content of oxygen vacancies, fast electron mobility rate and obvious advantages in catalytic ozone decomposition performance at a space velocity of 600Lg−1 h−1 and 95% RH. In-situ DRIFT spectra indicated that the rate-determining steps for ozone decomposition of MnCO3 and Mn3O4 are the reaction of atomic oxygen with ozone to form O22- and desorption of O22-, respectively. MnCO3/Mn3O4 heterogeneous catalyst undergoes reconfiguration under ozone atmosphere, inducing discontinuous MnOx coatings on the MnCO3 surface, which form a potential difference with Mn3O4. MnCO3/Mn3O4 heterogeneous structure modulates the electronic state of active site, and the synergistic effect of MnCO3 and Mn3O4 improves catalytic performance.
Manganese-doped Cobalt Tetroxide for Formaldehyde Oxidation

Abstract:Cobalt-based oxides are appealing but less-well investigated catalytic materials for formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidation. We herein report a careful study of carbon-supported Co(3_x)Mn(x)O4 catalyst, with special focuses on the incorporation of Mn ions into Co3O4 lattice and its effect on the catalytic activity for HCHO oxidation. The Co3_xMnxO4/C catalysts were fabricated using a co-precipitation method followed by annealing treatment. A combination of phase structure/chemical structure analyses and control experiments confirmed the substitu-tional doping of Mn ions in Co3O4 lattice, which resulted in increment of oxygen vacancy concentration. Benefiting from Mn-doping and the dispersion effect of carbon, the Co2.7Mn0.3O4/C catalyst prepared under optimal conditions exhibited an impressively high activity for HCHO oxidation, fairly good stability and excellent moisture tolerance. For instance, it enabled a 100% HCHO conversion at 90 C with a ten-fold higher mass -specific activity compared to Co3O4/C. A possible mechanism describing the HCHO oxidation over Co3_xMnxO4/C catalyst was proposed based on the in situ diffused reflectance infrared spectroscopy results.

Abstract:This study effectively addresses the rapid deactivation of manganese-based catalysts in humid environments during ozone decomposition by introducing iron-doped manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve (Fe-OMS-2) catalysts supported on activated carbon (AC). By optimizing the doping ratio of Fe-OMS-2, the Fe-OMS-2 0.5 /AC catalyst achieves nearly 100% ozone decomposition efficiency across a wide range of relative humidity levels (0 to 60%), even at elevated air flow rates of 800 L·g −1 ·h −1 , outperforming standalone AC, Fe-OMS-2, or a simple mixture of OMS-2 and AC. The Fe-OMS-2 0.5 /AC catalyst features a porous surface and a mesoporous structure, providing a substantial specific surface area that facilitates the uniform distribution of the Fe-OMS-2 active phase on the AC surface. The incorporation of Fe 3+ ions enhances electron transfer between valence state transitions of Mn, thereby improving the catalyst's efficiency in ozone decomposition. Additionally, the AC component protects catalytic sites and enhances the catalyst's humidity resistance. In conclusion, this research presents a novel strategy for developing highly efficient and cost-effective ozone decomposition catalysts that enhance dehumidification, significantly contributing to industrial ozone treatment technologies and advancing environmental protection.

Abstract:ε-MnO2 catalysts with Mn vacancies and appropriate Li+ were designed with the help of density functional theory calculations (DFT) and prepared by a novel selective dissolution strategy. Their physiochemical properties were characterized and catalytic activity for ozone decomposition evaluated. DFT calculations showed that Mn vacancies and appropriate amounts of Li+ in ε-MnO2 facilitated the formation of oxygen vacancies, decreased adsorption ability for H2O and O2, and maintained high adsorption ability for O3 on these oxygen vacancies. Characterization results showed that preparing ε-MnO2 by selective dissolution of Mn-Li precursors with 0.5 M HCl produced more Mn vacancies, and, thus, weaker crystallinity, larger specific surface area, superior reducibility, better oxygen storage capacity, and higher oxygen vacancies. This catalyst exhibited excellent activity and stability for ozone decomposition. Furthermore, a possible mechanism for ozone decomposition by the synergy of Li+, Mn vacancies, and oxygen vacancies in ε-MnO2 was proposed.

Highly efficient removal of ozone by amorphous manganese oxides synthesized with a simple hydrothermal method

Abstract:Amorphous manganese oxides (MnOx) were synthesized by facile hydrothermal reactions between potassium permanganate and manganese acetate. Synthesis parameters, including hydrothermal time and temperature and molar ratio of precursors, significantly affected the ozone removal performance and structure property of MnOx. Amorphous MnOx-1.5, which was prepared at the Mn2+/Mn7+ molar ratio of 1.5 under hydrothermal conditions of 120°C and 2 hr, showed the highest ozone removal rate of 93% after 480 min at the room temperature, RH (relative humidity) = 80% and WHSV (weight hourly space velocity) = 600 L/(g·hr). The morphology, composition and structure of catalysts were investigated with X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Raman spectra, N2 physisorption, field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), O2 temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS). It was confirmed that high catalytic activity of amorphous MnOx for ozone removal was mainly ascribed to its abundant oxygen vacancies, high oxygen mobility and large specific surface area.

Abstract:Ozone (O3) pollution is highly detrimental to human health and the ecosystem due to it being ubiquitous in ambient air and industrial processes. Catalytic decomposition is the most efficient technology for O3 elimination, while the moisture-induced low stability represents the major challenge for its practical applications. Here, activated carbon (AC) supported delta-MnO2 (Mn/AC-A) was facilely synthesized via mild redox in an oxidizing atmosphere to obtain exceptional O3 decomposition capacity. The optimal 5Mn/AC-A achieved nearly 100% of O3 decomposition at a high space velocity (1200 L g-1 h-1) and remained extremely stable under entire humidity conditions. The functionalized AC provided well designed protection sites to inhibit the accumulation of water on delta-MnO2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the abundant oxygen vacancies and a low desorption energy of intermediate peroxide (O22-) can significantly boost O3 decomposition activity. Moreover, a kilo-scale 5Mn/AC-A with low cost (similar to 1.5 $/kg) was used for the O3 decomposition in practical applications, which could quickly decompose O3 pollution to a safety level below 100 mu g m-3. This work offers a simple strategy for the development of moisture-resistant and inexpensive catalysts and greatly promotes the practical application of ambient O3 elimination.
