Abstract:Manganese oxides (MnO2)-based catalysts are prominent candidates for ozone elimination, which always bear the accumulation of the intermediate oxygen species and water, resulting in unsatisfactory catalytic efficiency. To overcome this critical defect, we propose carbon nanotubes confined MnO2 catalysts (MnO2-in-CNT) for efficient and stable ozone decomposition over a wide relative humidity range (RH, 15–90%). Strikingly, the catalyst exhibits an efficient and sustainable ozone conversion (98%) over 100 h under a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 600,000 mL g−1 h−1 and RH of 15%, and durability under high RH (77% over 50 h, RH 70%), well beyond its unconfined analog and most reported works. This excellent catalytic performance can be attributed to the facilitated intermediate desorption on active sites and the confined structure alleviated the effect of water on inner MnO2. This discovery is expected to drive great progress in the applications of confined-structure catalysts for air purification.

Abstract:Abstract Major challenges encountered when developing manganese-based materials for ozone decomposition are related to the low stability and water inactivation. To solve these problems, a hierarchical structure consisted of graphene encapsulating α-MnO 2 nanofiber was developed. The optimized catalyst exhibited a stable ozone conversion efficiency of 80% and excellent stability over 100 h under a relative humidity (RH) of 20%. Even though the RH increased to 50%, the ozone conversion also reached 70%, well beyond the performance of α-MnO 2 nanofiber. Here, surface graphite carbon was activated by capturing the electron from inner unsaturated Mn atoms. The excellent stability originated from the moderate local work function, which compromised the reaction barriers in the adsorption of ozone molecule and the desorption of the intermediate oxygen species. The hydrophobic graphene shells hindered the chemisorption of water vapour, consequently enhanced its water resistance. This work offered insights for catalyst design and would promote the practical application of manganese-based catalysts in ozone decomposition.

Enhancing ozone catalytic decomposition through acid treatment of α-MnO2 for improved activity and humidity resistance

Abstract:Post-etching method using dilute acid solutions is an effective technology to modulate the surface compositions of metal-oxide catalysts. Here the α-MnO2 catalyst treated with 0.1 mol/L nitric acid exhibits higher ozone decomposition activity at high relative humidity than the counterpart treated with acetic acid. Besides the increases in surface area and lattice dislocation, the improved activity can be due to relatively higher Mn valence on the surface and newly-formed Brønsted acid sites adjacent to oxygen vacancies. The remnant nitro species deposited on the catalyst by nitric acid treatment is ideal hydrophobic groups at ambient conditions. The decomposition route is also proposed based on the DRIFTS and DFT calculations: ozone is facile to adsorb on the oxygen vacancy, and the protonic H of Brønsted acid sites bonds to the terminal oxygen of ozone to accelerate its cleavage to O2, reducing the reaction energy barrier of O2 desorption.

Abstract:Manganese oxides (MnO x ) with crystal structures are difficult to effectively remove ozone under high humidity owing to their low defect content and poor moisture resistance. Herein, Ni a -MnO x -A catalysts with different defect degrees were well fabricated by modulating the ratios of the precursors via a facile hydrothermal approach. Effects of molar ratios of precursors on physiochemical properties and ozone removal efficiencies of Ni a -MnO x -A were investigated systematically under high humidity conditions. Amorphous Ni 0.5 -MnO x -1.5 exhibited an ozone conversion of 100% for a continuous air flow containing 20 ppm ozone at a relative humidity (RH) of 60% (space velocity = 600 L·g −1 ·h −1 ). The incorporation of Ni 2+ ions weakened the crystallinity and facilitated oxygen vacancy defect formation, which are believed to be active sites for ozone decomposition. It was confirmed that the exceptional ozone decomposition capacity of Ni 0.5 -MnO x -1.5 was attributed to its abundant oxygen vacancy, larger specific surface area, and higher reducibility and oxygen mobility. Furthermore, sufficient oxygen vacancy effectively mitigated the negative effect of humidity.

Abstract:The catalytic efficiency of manganese-based catalysts in practical ozone decomposition applications is limited by challenging desorption of intermediate oxygen species and competitive adsorption of H2O molecules in humid environments. In this work, MnCO3/Mn3O4 composites with heterogeneous structures were synthesized through a facile one-step strategy. The obtained MnCO3/Mn3O4-1/2 catalyst exhibited high content of oxygen vacancies, fast electron mobility rate and obvious advantages in catalytic ozone decomposition performance at a space velocity of 600Lg−1 h−1 and 95% RH. In-situ DRIFT spectra indicated that the rate-determining steps for ozone decomposition of MnCO3 and Mn3O4 are the reaction of atomic oxygen with ozone to form O22- and desorption of O22-, respectively. MnCO3/Mn3O4 heterogeneous catalyst undergoes reconfiguration under ozone atmosphere, inducing discontinuous MnOx coatings on the MnCO3 surface, which form a potential difference with Mn3O4. MnCO3/Mn3O4 heterogeneous structure modulates the electronic state of active site, and the synergistic effect of MnCO3 and Mn3O4 improves catalytic performance.

Abstract:Cryptomelane-type MnO2 catalysts own excellent ozone (O3) decomposition performance. However, it is urgent to improve their long-term stability at ambient temperature, especially under the presence of water. In the present study, a modification strategy was proposed by N-doping and the successive Pd introduction. The N-doping of MnO2 by NH4Cl (NH4–MnO2) can increase its activity for O3 decomposition. And almost 100% O3 decomposition was achieved within 24 h under water-free atmosphere at ambient temperature (25 °C). Successive Pd addition further promoted the water-resistance of NH4–MnO2 catalyst under high humidity (RH > 90%). In combination with detailed characterizations, it indicated that the enhancements on stability and water-resistance were attributed to synergistic effect among acid sites, oxygen defects and Pd clusters. Finally, the decomposition mechanism of gaseous O3 was proposed based on three decisive active sites above.

A Novel Γ-Like MnO2 Catalyst for Ozone Decomposition in High Humidity Conditions.

Abstract:MnO2 catalysts have been widely studied for catalytic gaseous ozone decomposition. However, their poor moisture resistance often leads to undesirable catalytic effects in the presence of high humidity. In this study, a novel catalyst with gamma-like MnO2 was synthesized using the selective dissolution method on LaMnO3 pemvskites. The as-prepared catalyst exhibited quite stable ozone conversion of similar to 90% within 12 h under 75% relative humidity (400-800 ppm of ozone, 30 degrees C, 150 000 mL.g(-1).h(-1) of WHSV). In contrast, traditional gamma-MnO2 catalyst showed deficient resistance to H2O and sensitivity to space velocity. Detailed characterizations showed that the larger number of oxygen vacancies induced by structure reconstruction of the gamma-like MnO2 and residual La3+ cations facilitated ozone decomposition in humid atmosphere. Finally, the reaction rate of ozone decomposition was proposed by a kinetic study, which further proved that the amount and hydrophilicity of oxygen vacancies are the determinants of the first-order reaction rate constant.

Abstract:Ground-level ozone pollution poses significant risks to both ecosystems and human health, necessitating the implementation of effective control strategies. This investigtion concentrated on a monolithic ozone degradation catalyst composed of powdered α-MnO2 , throughly examining its catalytic performance, moisture resistance, and stability. The monolithic catalyst demonstrated optimal catalytic activity, achieving an ozone conversion rate of 99% following calcination at 400°C for a duration of three hours. Comprehensive characterization of the catalyst's properties at pH levels of 1, 4, and 7 revealed that residual acid ions negatively impacted catalytic activity. Notably, the catalyst at pH 7 exhibited more oxygen vacancies, which correlated with the reduction of sulfate ion residues and the increased availability of more active sites during the washing process. Under conditons of pH 7 and a space velocity of 900,000 h-1, the α-MnO2 catalyst achieved conversion rates of 100% and 95% for 18 ppm ozone within three hours under 90% relative humidity and dry conditions, respectively. Furthermore, the monolithic catalyst demonstrated remarkable moisture resistance, performing effectively in continuous alternating humidity cycle tests and maintaining high humidity. It sustained 90% ozone decomposition efficiency after three hours of testing in high humidity conditions. Additionally, the α-MnO2 monolithic catalyst showed excellent stability, with an ozone conversion rate exceeding 99% throughout a 50-hour testindg period. These results highlight the significant potential of the α-MnO2 monolithic catalyst for applications in ozone removal.

Abstract:The widespread ozone (O3) pollution is extremely hazardous to human health and ecosystems. Catalytic decomposition into O2 is the most promising method to eliminate ambient O3, while the fast deactivation of catalysts under humid conditions remains the primary challenge for their application. Herein, we elaborately developed a splendidly active and stable Mn-based catalyst with double hydrophobic protection of active carbon (AC) and CeO2 (CeMn@AC), which possessed abundant interfacial oxygen vacancies and excellent desorption of peroxide intermediates (O22-). Under extremely humid (RH = 90%) conditions and a high space velocity of 1200 L h-1 g-1, the optimized CeMn@AC achieved nearly 100% O3 conversion (140 h) at 5 ppm, showing unprecedented catalytic activity and moisture resistance toward O3 decomposition. In situ DRIFTS and theory calculations confirmed that the exceptional moisture resistance of CeMn@AC was ascribed to the double protection effect of AC and CeO2, which cooperatively prevented the competitive adsorption of H2O molecules and their accumulation on the active sites of MnO2. AC provided a hydrophobic reaction environment, and CeO2 further alleviated moisture deterioration of the MnO2 particles exposed on the catalyst surface via the moisture-resistant oxygen vacancies of MnO2-CeO2 crystal boundaries. This work offers a simple and efficient strategy for designing moisture-resistant materials and facilitates the practical application of the O3 decomposition catalysts in various environments.
Surface Oxygen Vacancy Induced Α-Mno2 Nanofiber for Highly Efficient Ozone Elimination

Abstract:alpha-MnO2 nanofiber with high concentration of surface oxygen vacancy was obtained via vacuum deoxidation method. The activity of alpha-MnO2 strongly depends on the concentration and extent of oxygen vacancy, which can be adjusted by tuning the temperature and time of vacuum deoxidation. The formation of oxygen vacancy enhanced the ratio of Mn3+/Mn4+, which changed the charge distribution on the alpha-MnO2 nanofiber, resulting in a significant improvement of the adsorption of ozone on the surface of the catalyst. In the dry gas flow, the ozone removal rate at 20 h has increased from 32.6% to 95%. In the wet gas flow, the ozone removal rate was also enhanced thanks to more active sites offered by alpha-MnO2. What's more, we found that the deactivation caused by water vapor was temporary and the activity would recover once the humidity has decreased. Finally, DFT calculation revealed that surface oxygen vacancy was the adsorption and reaction site for ozone decomposition and a new mechanism of ozone decomposition in the presence of H2O also was proposed. Nitric Acid-Treated Birnessite-Type MnO2: an Efficient and Hydrophobic Material for Humid Ozone Decomposition

Abstract:MnO2 catalysts are important for low-temperature removal of air pollutants. Sometimes the unavoidable moisture is not conductive to the desired reactions, therefore, water-resistant materials are desirable. However, the reported methods are not easily fulfilled for practical applications and the underlying mechanism for the improved hydrophobicity has not been clarified. In this study, highly water-resistant birnessite-type MnO2 was designed for humid ozone (O-3) decomposition, which is important for alleviating global O-3 pollution. The sample treated by nitric acid (H-MnO2) exhibited stable O-3 conversion of similar to 50% within 24 h under 50% of relative humidity (115 ppm of O-3, 600 L.g(-1).h(-1) of space velocity, 25 degrees C). However, the pristine MnO2 was quickly deactivated with O-3 conversion dropping to similar to 10% within 30 min. Detailed characterizations show that higher amount of acid sites and oxygen vacancies together with their improved water-resistant properties facilitates adsorption and subsequent decomposition of humid O-3 over the H-MnO2. DFT calculations demonstrate that compared with the pristine MnO2, oxygen vacancies were more easily formed over the H-MnO2, and the surface of the H-MnO2 was more hydrophobic and more attractive to O-3 adsorption. Exceptional Ozone Decomposition over -MnO2/AC under an Entire Humidity Environment

Abstract:Ozone (O3) pollution is highly detrimental to human health and the ecosystem due to it being ubiquitous in ambient air and industrial processes. Catalytic decomposition is the most efficient technology for O3 elimination, while the moisture-induced low stability represents the major challenge for its practical applications. Here, activated carbon (AC) supported delta-MnO2 (Mn/AC-A) was facilely synthesized via mild redox in an oxidizing atmosphere to obtain exceptional O3 decomposition capacity. The optimal 5Mn/AC-A achieved nearly 100% of O3 decomposition at a high space velocity (1200 L g-1 h-1) and remained extremely stable under entire humidity conditions. The functionalized AC provided well designed protection sites to inhibit the accumulation of water on delta-MnO2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the abundant oxygen vacancies and a low desorption energy of intermediate peroxide (O22-) can significantly boost O3 decomposition activity. Moreover, a kilo-scale 5Mn/AC-A with low cost (similar to 1.5 $/kg) was used for the O3 decomposition in practical applications, which could quickly decompose O3 pollution to a safety level below 100 mu g m-3. This work offers a simple strategy for the development of moisture-resistant and inexpensive catalysts and greatly promotes the practical application of ambient O3 elimination.

Abstract:This study effectively addresses the rapid deactivation of manganese-based catalysts in humid environments during ozone decomposition by introducing iron-doped manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve (Fe-OMS-2) catalysts supported on activated carbon (AC). By optimizing the doping ratio of Fe-OMS-2, the Fe-OMS-2 0.5 /AC catalyst achieves nearly 100% ozone decomposition efficiency across a wide range of relative humidity levels (0 to 60%), even at elevated air flow rates of 800 L·g −1 ·h −1 , outperforming standalone AC, Fe-OMS-2, or a simple mixture of OMS-2 and AC. The Fe-OMS-2 0.5 /AC catalyst features a porous surface and a mesoporous structure, providing a substantial specific surface area that facilitates the uniform distribution of the Fe-OMS-2 active phase on the AC surface. The incorporation of Fe 3+ ions enhances electron transfer between valence state transitions of Mn, thereby improving the catalyst's efficiency in ozone decomposition. Additionally, the AC component protects catalytic sites and enhances the catalyst's humidity resistance. In conclusion, this research presents a novel strategy for developing highly efficient and cost-effective ozone decomposition catalysts that enhance dehumidification, significantly contributing to industrial ozone treatment technologies and advancing environmental protection.

Abstract:Manganese oxides with varied Mn valance states but identical morphologies were synthesized via a facile thermal treatment of γ-MnOOH. Also, their catalytic performance on ozone decomposition was investigated following the order of Mn3O4 < Mn2O3 < MnO2 < MnO2-H-200. In combination with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), H2-temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), O2-temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization, it was deduced that the superior O3 decomposition capacity for MnO2-H-200 was strongly associated with abundant oxygen vacancies on its surface. Among Mn3O4, Mn2O3, and MnO2, the difference in O3 decomposition efficiency was dependent on the divergent nature of oxygen vacancy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that Mn3O4 and MnO2 possessed lower formation energy of oxygen vacancy, while MnO2 had the minimum desorption energy of peroxide species (O2*). It was deduced that the promotion of the O3 decomposition capability was attributed to the easier O2* desorption. Insights into the deactivation mechanism for MnO2-H-200 further validated the assumptions. As the reaction proceeded, adsorbed oxygen species accumulated on the catalyst surface, and a portion of them were transformed to lattice oxygen. Surface Lattice Oxygen Activation by Nitrogen-Doped Manganese Dioxide as an Effective and Longevous Catalyst for Indoor HCHO Decomposition

Abstract:Oxygen vacancy plays an important role in catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO), but the inherent drawback of its thermodynamic instability causes the deactivation of catalysts. Hence, improving the thermodynamic stability of oxygen vacancy is a crux during HCHO oxidation. Here, a novel and simple nitrogen doping of MnO2/C catalyst is designed for HCHO oxidation at room temperature. The surface lattice oxygen of MnO2 will be activated by nitrogen-doping, which acts as active sites for HCHO oxidation and solves the thermodynamic instability issue of oxygen vacancy. Furthermore, carbon is doped with nitrogen to promote electron transfer and accelerate the HCHO oxidation process. Therefore, the catalytic activity and stability of the catalyst can be significantly promoted, which can completely remove ∼1 ppm HCHO in the tank within 3 h, and remains highly active after 5 cycles at room temperature (RH = 55%). In addition, the excellent removal performance over the prepared catalyst is also attributed to abundant surface oxygen species, amorphous crystallinity, and low reduction temperature. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectrometry (DRIFTS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the reaction mechanism of HCHO. This strategy provides crucial enlightenment for designing novel Mn-based catalysts for application in the HCHO oxidation field.
