Abstract:Bi2WO6/mpg–C3N4 composite catalyst was prepared by hydrothermal method and applied in the partial oxidation of HMF to DFF by photocatalytic approach. The 12% Bi2WO6/mpg–C3N4 composite exhibits the highest catalytic performance, with the HMF conversion of 59.3% and the DFF selectivity of 84.3% after 6 h. This may be primarily ascribed to the synergetic effect of Bi2WO6 and mpg–C3N4 on photogenerated charges separation through the charge transfer between the two semiconductors. Based on the reactive species trapping experiment, it is concluded that ·O2− plays a significant part to convert HMF into DFF and the electron–hole separation follows a Z‐scheme mechanism.
In-situ route for the graphitized carbon/TiO2 composite photocatalysts with enhanced removal efficiency to emerging phenolic pollutants

Abstract:TiO2 is the most photoactive material because of its superstrong photooxidizing ability, and TiO2 photocatalysis has been widely applied in sustainable water treatment and environmental remediation. However, poor sunlight or visible-light harvesting efficiency and fast recombination rate of the photogenerated charge carriers severely limit the practical applications of TiO2. To overcome these problems, the present work demonstrates a facile in-situ co-condensation method combined with hydrothermal treatment to prepare a series of graphitized carbon/TiO2 composite photocatalysts, and anatase TiO2 phase and pi-pi-conjugated polycyclic aromatic carbon structure are created simultaneously. As-prepared TiO2/C composites exhibit remarkably high visible-light photocatalytic activity in the degradation of aqueous emerging phenolic pollutants, acetaminophen (APAP) and methylparaben (MPB), and apparent rate constant of the TiO2/C composite with carbon doping level of 10.3% for APAP and MPB removal is 7.6 and 2.8 times higher than that of bare TiO2, and 6.2 and 2.6 times higher than that of Degussa P25 TiO2. Based on the results of photoelectrochemical experiments, indirect chemical probe measurements, and ESR spectroscopy, it is verified that doping TiO2 with graphitized carbon is responsible for this enhanced photocatalytic activity, which renders the improved visible-light harvesting ability, the accelerated separation of the photogenerated charge carriers, and enlarged BET surface areas. Through analyzing the intermediates yielded in the photodegradation process, the pathway of visible-light photocatalytic degradation of APAP and MPB over the TiO2/C composite is proposed. Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is a prospective technique for pollutant degradation, but less attention has been paid to the tunable modulation and effective utilization of reactive oxygen species in selective oxidation. Herein, we develop a photocatalytic Fenton-like system with Fe single-atom supported on carbon nitride that generates singlet oxygen (1O2) as dominant active species to selectively oxidize glucose to gluconic acid. The loading of atomic Fe onto carbon nitride can notably aggrandize the light absorption and boost the photon-generated carriers transfer efficiency. With PMS and simulated sunlight, the Fe single-atom catalyst afforded a glucose conversion of 36.3% with gluconic acid selectivity up to 91.6%, as is superior to the state-of-the-art catalytic systems. Control experiments and theoretical analysis reveal that the excellent catalytic performance of Fe single-atom supported on carbon nitride is resulted from the enhanced photocatalytic activity with better PMS activation ability.

Abstract:Abstract Photoelectrochemical reaction is emerging as a powerful approach for biomass conversion. However, it has been rarely explored for glucose conversion into value-added chemicals. Here we develop a photoelectrochemical approach for selective oxidation of glucose to high value-added glucaric acid by using single-atom Pt anchored on defective TiO 2 nanorod arrays as photoanode. The defective structure induced by the oxygen vacancies can modulate the charge carrier dynamics and band structure, simultaneously. With optimized oxygen vacancies, the defective TiO 2 photoanode shows greatly improved charge separation and significantly enhanced selectivity and yield of C 6 products. By decorating single-atom Pt on the defective TiO 2 photoanode, selective oxidation of glucose to glucaric acid can be achieved. In this work, defective TiO 2 with single-atom Pt achieves a photocurrent density of 1.91 mA cm −2 for glucose oxidation at 0.6 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, leading to an 84.3 % yield of glucaric acid under simulated sunlight irradiation.

Abstract:The photocatalytic valorization of glucose has attracted more and more attention for producing value-added chemicals. Herein, value-added chemicals like arabinose and formic acid were obtained by selective photocatalytic oxidation of glucose irradiated with visible light, which was realized using Bi 2 O 3 /TiO 2 composite as the photocatalyst and atmospheric O 2 as the oxidant in water. It was found that the photocatalytic performance of Bi 2 O 3 /TiO 2 composite in the glucose oxidation was obviously superior to that of pure Bi 2 O 3 and pure TiO 2 , the significantly enhanced photocatalytic efficiency was mainly attributed to the promotion of photogenerated charge separation and adsorption capacity towards glucose. The influences of mass ratio of Bi 2 O 3 to TiO 2 and initial concentration of glucose on the glucose oxidation were further investigated with many details. Additionally, recycling experiments showed that the Bi 2 O 3 /TiO 2 composite exhibited a favorable stability in the photocatalytic process, and the roles of various active species for glucose oxidation were also determined by the active species trapping experiments. This work could provide some valuable viewpoints for producing value-added chemicals from biomass by photocatalysis.

Abstract:We describe here a photocatalytic process for direct conversion of glucose to value-added chemicals (arabinose and erythrose) and H-2 in water under mild reaction conditions without additional acid or base. The total selectivity for the production of arabinose and erythrose on rutile TiO2-based photocatalyst reaches 91% at 65% conversion. More importantly, it has been demonstrated for the first time that the photodegradation of glucose initially involves C1-C2 bond cleavage (alpha-scission) to produce arabinose in the presence of water as solvent. To unravel the high selectivity on rutile TiO2, EPR and glucose reaction were carried out on rutile TiO2 in the presence of H2O2. It was found that the selectivity of the products is mainly dependent on the reactive oxygen species: the hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) may lead to low selectivity, while the peroxy species lead to a high selectivity. The advantages of the photocatalytic approach for conversion of biomass to value-added chemicals include (1) operation at low reaction temperature, (2) benign environmental effects due to using only water as both solvent and oxidant precursor, and (3) being wasteless due to high selectivity with H-2 as the by-product. Improving yields by switching central metal ions in porphyrazine-catalyzed oxidation of glucose into value-added organic acids with SnO2 in aqueous solution

Abstract:Photocatalysis has exhibited huge potential in selective conversion of glucose into value-added chemicals. Therefore, modulation of photocatalytic material for selective upgrading of glucose is significant. Here, we have investigated the insertion of different central metal ions, Fe, Co, Mn, and Zn, into porphyrazine loading with SnO 2 for access to more efficient transformation of glucose into value-added organic acids in aqueous solution at mild reaction conditions. The best selectivity for organic acids containing glucaric acid, gluconic acid, and formic acid of 85.9% at 41.2% glucose conversion was attained by using the SnO 2 /CoPz composite after reacting for 3 h. The effects of central metal ions on surficial potential and related possible factors have been studied. Experimental results showed that the introduction of metalloporphyrazine with different central metal ions on the surface of SnO 2 has a significant effect on the separation of photogenerated charges, changing the adsorption and desorption of glucose and products on the catalyst surface. The central metal ions of cobalt and iron contributed more to the positive effects toward enhancing conversion of glucose and yields of products, and manganese and zinc contributed more to the negative effects, resulting in the poor yield of products. The differences from the central metals may attribute to the surficial potential change of the composite and the coordination effects between the metal and oxygen atom. An appropriate surficial potential environment of the photocatalyst may achieve a better interactive relationship between the catalyst and reactant, while appropriate ability of producing active species matched with adsorption and desorption abilities would gain a better yield of products. These results have provided valued ideas for designing more efficient photocatalysts in selective oxidation of glucose utilizing clean solar energy in the future.

Abstract:Biomass photorefining to selectively produce value-added bioproducts is an emerging alternative biomass valorization approach to alleviate energy crisis and achieve carbon neutrality. Here, we demonstrate an efficient and selective glucose photo-oxidation to gluconic acid via a rationally designed dual-functional carbon nitride photocatalyst that not only allows H2O2 production via 2e– oxygen reduction reaction (2e-ORR) but also realizes in situ photo-Fenton-like reaction. As a result, the essential oxidative species (•O2 – and •OH) for glucose oxidation into gluconic acid are generated that achieves >60% glucose conversion and >60% of gluconic acid selectivity within 4 h. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate the superior performance of the photocatalyst for •O2 – and H2O2 generation. Further experimental results reveal that the moderate concentration of H2O2 produced by 2e-ORR reaction plays a vital role in regulatinge gluconic acid selectivity. This work demonstrates a good example to realize selective biomass photorefining through tandem reaction of ORR and in situ photo-Fenton-like process, which could have profound impact on artificial photoenzyme systems involving moderate H2O2 modulation.

Abstract:Photocatalysis has exhibited huge potential in many reactions, but the design of metal-free photocatalytic material for selective upgrading of biomass is rarely achieved. Here, we report that the metal-free photocatalyst consisted of nitrogen-deficient carbon nitride (BNCN) and chlorin e6 (Ce6) can efficiently and selectively oxidize glucose into gluconic acid and glucaric acid. Introducing nitrogen defects could significantly enhance the optical absorption and modulate the band structure. In addition, the combination of Ce6 with BNCN further improve the optical absorption property and promote effective separation of photon-generated carriers. As expected, the resultant Ce6@BNCN catalyst gave a total selectivity of gluconic acid, glucaric acid and arabinose as high as 70.9% at glucose conversion up to 62.3%, as is superior to previously reported photocatalytic systems. The mechanism for the enhancement of catalytic performance and the reaction pathway were revealed by experimental studies combined with DFT calculations.

Abstract:Formic acid, as an excellent hydrogen-storage material, has recently become increasingly important. Previous conversion of biomass into formic acid suffers from problems of strict operation conditions such as the use of a high concentration of H2O2 oxidant and alkali at higher temperatures or the precious metal catalysts. Here, a straightforward photocatalytic method to selectively convert glucose into formate is first reported. Using a nano TiO2 catalyst, we show that glucose can be efficiently converted into formic acid with a high yield of 35% at ambient condition with 0.03 M NaOH concentration, and the proposed method also worked on xylose for formate production. The conversion of glucose into formic acid is mainly attributed to the accelerated formation of active oxidative radicals (O-2(center dot-),(OH)-O-center dot) in the presence of hydroxyl ions, and also, hydroxyl ions adjust the charge of the TiO2 surface and control the adsorption of glucose and the desorption of formic acid. These results open up a new approach toward economical utilization of sustainable biomass and clean solar energy for formic acid production.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidizing of glucose into gluconic acid (GLUC) provides an attractive and feasible pathway for the high value-added utilization of glucose, in which Pd-based catalysts deliver outstanding catalytic performance. However, the surface poisoning of Pd caused by the strong adsorption of GLUC becomes the bottleneck for their further applications. Herein, oxygen-vacancy-riched ceria supported Pd catalyst (Pd/CeO2) is employed, which effectively alleviates the catalyst deactivation, and realizes high catalytic activity and stability with 100 % GLUC selectivity for glucose oxidation at room temperature. Kinetic analysis confirms the strong anti-poisoning ability of Pd/CeO2. The superior catalytic performance is attributed to the modulation of the electronic structure of Pd nanoparticles by the strong metal-support interaction between Pd and CeO2. The valence band photoemission spectra reveal that the downshift of the d-band center of Pd leads to the weak adsorption of GLUC on Pd/CeO2. Meanwhile, kinetic isotope effect experiments indicate that the OHads generated from H2O dissociation on the CeO2 surface affords another path for glucose oxidation, thus improves the catalytic activity.

Abstract:Being an important biomass, glucose can be converted into a range of high-value-added products by oxidation of aldehyde and hydroxyl groups or C-C bond cleavage. In contrast with conventional approaches (e.g., microbial fermentation, and thermocatalysis), conversion of glucose by photocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, and electrocatalysis is conducted under mild conditions free of any strong oxidants, which are highly valuable for economical and environmental benefits. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the various catalytic systems (e.g., catalysts, conversion, yields, and mechanisms) for photocatalytic, photoelectrocatalytic, and electrocatalytic conversion of glucose. Emphasis is put on the correlation of the catalytic performance with the catalyst structures. The underlying mechanisms of glucose oxidation by the catalysts were elaborated. The integrated systems coupling glucose conversion with hydrogen production were comparatively evaluated, affording information for further development of novel catalytic systems. Finally, challenges, and future perspectives on glucose conversion by photocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, and electrocatalysis are proposed.

Abstract:The electrooxidation of the alcohol and aldehyde molecules instead of water coupled with H 2 production has been proven to be effective for producing high-value fine chemicals under alkaline conditions. It is also noteworthy that under acidic conditions, the stability of non-noble metal water oxidation catalysts remains a great challenge due to the lattice oxygen mechanism. Hence, we coupled the biomass-derived glucose oxidation for high-value D-glucaric acid (GRA) with ultra-durable hydrogen in acid solution over a Yb-MnO 2 catalyst. The Mn 3+ regulated by Yb atoms doped in MnO 2 can effectively optimize the adsorption and desorption processes of the alcohol and aldehyde group and improve the intrinsic activity but cannot for H 2 O. The catalyst exhibited extremely high activity and stability after 50 h for glucose oxidation, inhibiting the lattice oxygen process and MnO 4− formation, while the activity was quickly lost within 0.5 h for water oxidation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrated that glucose oxidation reaction proceeds preferentially due to the oxidation of aldehyde group with lower adsorption-free energy (−0.4 eV) than water (Δ G > 0 eV), avoiding the lattice oxygen mechanism. This work suggests that biomass-derived glucose oxidation not only provides a cost-effective approach for high-value chemicals, but also shows an extremely potential as an alternative to acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for ultradurable H 2 production.
Coproduction of hydrogen and lactic acid from glucose photocatalysis on band-engineered Zn1-xCdxS homojunction

Abstract:Photocatalytic transformation of biomass into value-added chemicals coupled with co-production of hydrogen provides an explicit route to trap sunlight into the chemical bonds. Here, we demonstrate a rational design of Zn1-xCdxS solid solution homojunction photocatalyst with a pseudo-periodic cubic zinc blende (ZB) and hexagonal wurtzite (WZ) structure for efficient glucose conversion to simultaneously produce hydrogen and lactic acid. The optimized Zn0.6Cd0.4S catalyst consists of a twinning superlattice, has a tuned bandgap, and displays excellent efficiency with respect to hydrogen generation (690 ± 27.6 μmol·h-1·gcat. -1), glucose conversion (~90%), and lactic acid selectivity (~87%) without any co-catalyst under visible light irradiation. The periodic WZ/ZB phase in twinning superlattice facilitates better charge separation, while superoxide radical (⋅O2 -) and photogenerated holes drive the glucose transformation and water oxidation reactions, respectively. This work demonstrates that rational photocatalyst design could realize an efficient and concomitant production of hydrogen and value-added chemicals from glucose photocatalysis.

Highly-efficient Photocatalytic H2O2 Evolution Using Hydrothermal Carbons with Donor-Acceptor Furan Couples

Abstract:Nature-inspired photosynthesis of H2O2 using sustainable catalytic materials is promising to generate high-value chemicals and solar fuels from renewable energy sources. However, existing H2O2 evolution systems still face limitations of low efficiency, high cost, and the need for sacrificial agents or organic electron donors. Herein, we report novel furan-resin-structured hydrothermal carbons (HTCs) as photocatalytic H2O2 generation catalysts by one-step hydrothermal carbonization of saccharides or biomass. The catalysts have high production efficiency (480.7 μmol gcat−1 h−1) for photocatalytic H2O2 evolution without any sacrificial agent or O2 aeration. This is one of the pioneer studies of HTCs constructed by low-bandgap furan resin comprising conjugated quinoid and aromatic furan units. The underlying mechanism is based on the π-stacked donor-acceptor (D-A) furan couples that significantly enhance the charge transfer efficiency of photogenerated electrons. The reported low-cost and easy-to-manufacture HTC photocatalysts with remarkable activity show great potential in artificial photosynthesis applications.
Synergistic Redox Dual‐Site Strategy to Boost Photosynthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide

Abstract:The 3,4,9,10‐Perylenetetracarboxylic acid diimide serves as the active site of the oxidation side, facilitating the water oxidation half‐reaction and accelerating the proton supply. Pt single atoms are photogenerated electron‐rich sites, where the activation transformation of oxygen molecules occurs. The two components on the graphitic carbon nitride substrate realize the efficient generation of hydrogen peroxide. Graphitized carbon nitride (C3N4)‐based photocatalysts provide a prospective approach for producing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in artificial photosynthesis. However, their activity is constrained by the sluggish water oxidation reaction (WOR) process, which hampers the supply of protons and electrons necessary for the oxygen reduction reaction. Here, this work demonstrates a synergistic redox dual‐site strategy via co‐modified with 3,4,9,10‐perylenetetracarboxylic acid diimide (PDI) and Pt single atoms in C3N4 support, which achieves an exceptional H2O2 yield of 802 μmol g−1 h−1 and a selectivity of 91.8% without sacrificial agents. Mechanistic studies reveal that Pt single atoms act as photogenerated electron‐rich sites to effectively activate O2 to form superoxide radicals, and PDI promotes WOR driving force to provide abundant protons. The optimized reduction and oxidation half‐reactions improve the proton‐coupled electron transfer process, thereby enhancing the selective photosynthesis of H2O2. This work underscores the importance of finely controlling half‐reactions in photocatalytic processes to promote efficient and synergistic overall reactions.

Abstract:Artificial photosynthesis is a highly-promising strategy to convert solar energy into hydrogen energy for the relief of the global energy crisis. Water oxidation is the bottleneck for its kinetic and energetic complexity in the further enhancement of the overall efficiency of the artificial photosystem. Developing efficient and cost-effective photocatalysts for water oxidation is a growing desire, and semiconductor photocatalysts have recently attracted more attention due to their stability and simplicity. This article reviews the recent advancement of semiconductor photocatalysts with a focus on the relationship between material optimization and water oxidation efficiency. A brief introduction to artificial photosynthesis and water oxidation is given first, followed by an explanation of the basic rules and mechanisms of semiconductor particulate photocatalysts for water oxidation as theoretical references for discussions of componential, surface structure, and crystal structure modification. O-2-evolving photocatalysts in Z-scheme systems are also introduced to demonstrate practical applications of water oxidation photocatalysts in artificial photosystems. The final part proposes some challenges based on the dynamics and energetics of photoholes which are fundamental to the enhancement of water oxidation efficiency, as well as on the simulation of natural water oxidation that will be a trend in future research.
