Ultra-Low Voltage Bipolar Hydrogen Production from Biomass-Derived Aldehydes and Water in Membrane-Less Electrolyzers

Abstract:Water electrolysis using renewable energy inputs is being actively pursued as a green route for hydrogen production. However, it is limited by the high energy consumption due to the sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and safety issues associated with H 2 and O 2 mixing. Here, we replaced OER with an electrocatalytic oxidative dehydrogenation (EOD) of aldehydes for bipolar H 2 production and achieved industrial-level current densities at cell voltages much lower than during water electrolysis. Experimental and computational studies suggest a reasonable barrier for C-H dissociation on Cu surfaces, mainly through a diol intermediate, with a potential-dependent competition with the solution-phase Cannizzaro reaction. The kinetics of EOD reaction was further enhanced by a porous CuAg catalyst prepared from a galvanic replacement method. Through Ag incorporation and its modification of the Cu surface, the geometric current density and electrocatalyst durability were significantly improved. Finally, we engineered a bipolar H 2 production system in membrane-electrode assembly-based flow cells to facilitate mass transport, achieving a maximum current density of 248 and 390 mA cm −2 at cell voltages of 0.4 V and 0.6 V, respectively. The faradaic efficiency of H 2 from both cathode and anode reactions both attained ~100%. Taking advantage of the bipolar H 2 production without the issues associated with H 2 /O 2 mixing, an inexpensive, easy-to-manufacture dialysis porous membrane was demonstrated to substitute the costly anion exchange membrane, achieving an energy-efficient and cost-effective process in a simple reactor for H 2 production. The estimated H 2 price of $2.51/kg from an initial technoeconomic assessment is competitive with US DoE's "Green H 2 " targets.

Abstract:Monopolar membrane-assisted electrolyzers enable water electrolysis using acid-alkali asymmetric electrolytes. However, understanding how such an electrolyzer works remains a significant challenge. By assessing the concentration-polarization state in membranes, measuring the ion concentration change in electrolytes, and determining the corresponding transmembrane resistance, we reveal that this electrolyzer can prevent the negative effect of the water dissociation process. The electrolyzer functions by the chemical potential gradient between the asymmetric electrolytes. Briefly, the delta in pH between asymmetric electrolytes significantly modifies the reversible hydrogen electrode potential at both electrolyte compartments and electrodes, and therefore decreases the required external potential. Notably, the unavoidable ion diffusion slightly reduces this positive effect. The electrolyzer performance depends on the membrane property, working temperature, electrolyte compositions as well as electrocatalysts. When adopted with state-of-the-art electrocatalysts, this electrolyzer achieves an industrially relevant current density of 200 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of only 1.39 V, outperforming most conventional water electrolyzers, and to the best of our knowledge also those fed by asymmetric electrolytes. Overall, this work highlights the promise of coupling chemical potential energy and electrical energy for hydrogen production, which provides a new strategy to lower the potential for driving water splitting.

Abstract:Water electrolysis powered by renewable sources such as wind or solar produces clean hydrogen gas, which is used for many industrial processes and will be essential in a future clean energy economy. Commercialized membrane electrolyzers use acidic proton exchange membranes (PEMs), which offer high performance but require the use of expensive precious-metal catalysts such as IrO 2 and Pt that are nominally stable under the locally acidic conditions. Anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers in principle offer the performance of PEM electrolyzers with the ability to use earth-abundant catalysts and inexpensive bipolar plate materials. I will present our fundamental work in understanding the chemical and electrochemical processes in earth-abundant water-oxidation catalysts, including the use of integrated reference-electrode device architectures and cross-sectional materials analysis, as well as progress in building high-performance AEM electrolyzers. Baseline systems operate at 1 A·cm -2 in pure water feed at < 2 V at a moderate temperature of ~70 °C using either IrO 2 or Co 3 O 4 anode catalyst layers, Versogen TP-85 alkaline ionomers, and stainless-steel porous transport layers. These devices, however, degrade rapidly compared to PEM electrolyzers. The voltage profile corresponding to degradation has initial fast (~10 mV/h) and steady-state slow components (~1 mV/h), which we link to chemical and structural changes in the ionomer catalyst reactive zone. We further discover that dynamic Fe-based OER catalysts – that have world record performance in traditional liquid alkaline electrolyzer systems – perform poorly with enhanced degradation rates in alkaline membrane electrolysis, illustrating fundamentally different chemical design principles for OER catalysts. Lastly, I will discuss these processes in electrolyzer devices and in model systems, as well as present promising new chemical strategies we have developed to mitigate degradation and enhance performance using novel ionomers and electrode catalyst compositions and architectures.

Abstract:Using photovoltaic (PV) energy to produce hydrogen through water electrolysis is an environmentally friendly approach that results in no contamination, making hydrogen a completely clean energy source. Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is an excellent method of hydrogen production due to its long service life, low cost, and high reliability. However, the fast fluctuations of photovoltaic power cannot integrate well with alkaline water electrolyzers. As a solution to the issues caused by the fluctuating power, a hydrogen production system comprising a photovoltaic array, a battery, and an alkaline electrolyzer, along with an electrical control strategy and energy management strategy is proposed. The energy management strategy takes into account the predicted PV power for the upcoming hour and determines the power flow accordingly. By analyzing the characteristics of PV panels and alkaline water electrolyzers and imposing the proposed strategy, this system offers an effective means of producing hydrogen while minimizing energy consumption and reducing damage to the electrolyzer. The proposed strategy has been validated under various scenarios through simulations. In addition, the system's robustness was demonstrated by its ability to perform well despite inaccuracies in the predicted PV power.

Abstract:Green hydrogen production by water electrolysis is an inevitable solution for global sustainability. However, for making hydrogen energy as next-generation fuel, enough pure water and associated cost is required, which is another critical issue that must be resolved. An attempt has been made to produce hydrogen gas from low-grade and wastewater using alkaline water splitting. The electrodes, electrolyte, voltage, and impurity level have significantly affected hydrogen generation. Turbidity and total dissolved solids have been found to be important factors whose removal can enhance hydrogen production from wastewater. A high-strength sulfonated polyvinylidene fluoride (HSPVDF) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane was used to produce high-quality advanced treated water. Tertiary UF membrane treatment has contributed substantially to residual impurity removal and improved hydrogen generation. The study suggests that wastewater and advanced treated watercan effectively utilize green hydrogen generation with impurity removal. Based on this finding, the potential applicability for achieving energy independence in municipal wastewater treatment plants was examined. Replacing water with wastewater can be a new dimension of the hydrogen economy.

Abstract:To reduce the energy consumption of the electrolytic hydrogen generation process, we propose a novel approach to generate hydrogen with acidic/alkaline amphoteric water electrolysis, wherein hydrogen is produced inside an acidic solution and oxygen evolved under alkaline condition, and a membrane is employed in the middle of the electrolyzer to restrain neutralization. The electrode polarization is greatly reduced due to the specific arrangement of the acidic/alkaline amphoteric electrolyzer. The rate of hydrogen production achieves over four times higher than that of the alkaline aqueous solution at 2.2 V, and the energy consumption is reduced approximately 30% under the current density of 200 m A/cm 2. The investigation of transmembrane potential drop indicates water splitting on the membrane surfaces, which compensates for acid or alkaline loss on-site and maintains the concentration approximately constant during electrolysis process. The acidic/alkaline amphoteric water electrolysis is promising as an energy saving, clean and sustainable hydrogen production technology.

Abstract:Hydrogen is a zero-carbon footprint energy source with high energy density that could be the basis of future energy systems. Membrane-based water electrolysis is one means by which to produce high-purity and sustainable hydrogen. It is important that the scientific community focus on developing electrolytic hydrogen systems which match available energy sources. In this review, various types of water splitting technologies, and membrane selection for electrolyzers, are discussed. We highlight the basic principles, recent studies, and achievements in membrane-based electrolysis for hydrogen production. Previously, the NafionTM membrane was the gold standard for PEM electrolyzers, but today, cheaper and more effective membranes are favored. In this paper, CuCl–HCl electrolysis and its operating parameters are summarized. Additionally, a summary is presented of hydrogen production by water splitting, including a discussion of the advantages, disadvantages, and efficiencies of the relevant technologies. Nonetheless, the development of cost-effective and efficient hydrogen production technologies requires a significant amount of study, especially in terms of optimizing the operation parameters affecting the hydrogen output. Therefore, herein we address the challenges, prospects, and future trends in this field of research, and make critical suggestions regarding the implementation of comprehensive membrane-based electrolytic systems.

Abstract:The increasing availability of renewable energy sources, especially solar power, coupled with the desire to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, has led to an increased interest in using renewables to satisfy global energy demand. Hydrogen is an attractive alternative to fossil fuels due to its potential for emissions reductions and advantages in storage and transportation. Direct solar-to-hydrogen generation would enable the conversion of renewable energy and water into a storable fuel, thereby drastically reducing carbon emissions. However, current hydrogen production from commercial PEM electrolysis systems requires acidic environment which necessitates the use of expensive platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts and corrosion resistant cell stack components. Thus, a stable, robust, and inexpensive anion exchange membrane and PGM-free catalysts are needed to make alkaline solar water splitting commercially viable as a replacement for the expensive PEM system. We have developed a fully PGM-free electrolyzer using anion exchange membrane (AEM) in an alkaline environment that operates at 80 °C. Using carbon supported NiMo as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst and NiFe as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst, in combination with commercially available AEM from Versogen, we were able to achieve a stable performance of 1.504 V at 100 mA/cm 2 , compared with baseline PGM cell at 1.508 V, in alkaline environment. At 2 A/cm 2 , the fully PGM-free cell demonstrated 200 mV higher potential compared to the PGM baseline cell at 2.009 V. Furthermore, we were able to run more than 200-hour at constant current density 2 A/cm 2 , with 85 mV performance loss. Further developments in catalyst performance and membrane stability, as well as integration with photovoltaics to enable hydrogen production from water, are underway. Abstract:The process of producing hydrogen by water electrolysis is becoming more and more popular as people look for clean and renewable energy sources. The alkaline electrolyzers show promising features, however, there is a room for improvement in the efficiency and energy usage. The research explores optimizing PV-assisted alkaline electrolysis setup to enhance the performance and reduce its energy input. The factors such as solar irradiation, electrolyzer design, catalysts, and operational parameters impacts the energy efficiency and hydrogen production rates. The strategies include coupling PV arrays and electrolyzers with DC/DC converters with MPPT to maximize power output. Thus, the underlying goal of the review is to present the strategies that can be applied to improve the process by considering the several operational conditions of the electrolyzer, which influence the gas quality and the energy efficiency. Further, the strategies to overcome the existing issues like variables over time, the effects of fluctuations in current, and the partial load operation of the electrical energy from the renewable sources are discussed. The advancements in the alkaline electrolyzer technology and their economic assessment and the energy efficiency of the for the hydrogen production are also addressed. As a conclusive remarks, the challenges and future perspectives of the PV-assisted alkaline water electrolyzer technology has been emphasized.

Abstract:Water electrolysis using renewable energy is considered as a promising technique for sustainable and green hydrogen production. Conventional water electrolysis has two components - hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) occurring at the cathode and anode respectively. However, electrolysis of water suffers from high overpotential due to the slow kinetics of OER. To overcome this hybrid water electrolysis has been developed by replacing conventional anode oxidation producing oxygen with oxidation of cost-effective materials producing value-added chemicals. This review summarizes recent advances in organic oxidative reactions such as alcohols, urea, hydrazine, and biomass at the anode instead of OER. Furthermore, the review also highlights the use of membrane-free hybrid water electrolysis as a method to overcome the cost and complexity associated with conventional membrane-based electrolyzer thereby improving overall efficiency. This approach holds promise for scalable and cost-effective large-scale hydrogen production along with value-added products. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives are discussed for further development in membrane-free hybrid water electrolysis.

Abstract:Water electrolysis to obtain hydrogen in combination with intermittent renewable energy resources is an emerging sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Among the available electrolyzer technologies, anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) has been paid much attention because of its advantageous behavior compared to other more traditional approaches such as solid oxide electrolyzer cells, and alkaline or proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers. Recently, very promising results have been obtained in the AEMWE technology. This review paper is focused on recent advances in membrane electrode assembly components, paying particular attention to the preparation methods for catalyst coated on gas diffusion layers, which has not been previously reported in the literature for this type of electrolyzers. The most successful methodologies utilized for the preparation of catalysts, including co-precipitation, electrodeposition, sol–gel, hydrothermal, chemical vapor deposition, atomic layer deposition, ion beam sputtering, and magnetron sputtering deposition techniques, have been detailed. Besides a description of these procedures, in this review, we also present a critical appraisal of the efficiency of the water electrolysis carried out with cells fitted with electrodes prepared with these procedures. Based on this analysis, a critical comparison of cell performance is carried out, and future prospects and expected developments of the AEMWE are discussed.

Abstract:Hydrogen storage is a promising technology for storage of renewable energy resources. Despite its high energy density potential, the development of hydrogen storage has been impeded, mainly due to its significant cost. Although its cost is governed mainly by electrical energy expense, especially for hydrogen produced with alkaline water electrolysis, it is also driven by the value of the cell tension. The most common means of electrolyzer improvement is the use of an electrocatalyst, which reduces the energy required for electrochemical reaction to take place. Another efficient means of electrolyzer improvement is to use the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-assisted design that allows the comprehension of the phenomena occurring in the electrolyzer and also the improvement in the electrolyzer’s efficiency. The designed two-phase hydrodynamics model of this study has been compared with the experimental results of velocity profiles measured using Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) method. The simulated results were in good agreement with the experimental data in the literature. Under the good fit with experimental values, it is efficient to introduce a new physical bubble transfer phenomenon description called “bubble diffusion”.

Abstract:Green hydrogen production, i.e., produced on a CO2-neutral basis through the electrolysis of water employing renewable electricity, has attracted increasing attention. The electricity required is generated from Renewable Energy Sources (RES), for example, wind energy, hydropower, or solar energy. Since neither the process of production nor the end products of H2 and O2 are harmful to the environment, green hydrogen is climate neutral. Developing electrolysis technology is, therefore, a research topic to follow. Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) Water Electrolysis (WE) is an innovative technology that couples the advantages of the more mature technologies of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) and conventional alkaline electrolysis, with the potential to eliminate the drawbacks of both. AEMWE technology is in an evolutionary stage and involves more investigation on several research topics, such as membrane and catalyst development and stability, as well as alternative feeding solutions that do not compromise the availability of fresh water. These topics are addressed in this paper, mentioning the state-of-the-art materials, new promising ones, and providing future research directions to improve AEMWE towards a most mature technology.

Abstract:Energy transition has arisen its attention towards hydrogen technology. Green hydrogen can be produced from renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic (PV) through water electrolysis. However, its efficiency needs to be improved due to the intermittent nature of the remote microgrids. This study focuses on the design of SEPIC DC/DC converter and alkaline water electrolytic cells configuration on a 175 Wp polycrystalline silicon PV module. A homemade alkaline water electrolyzer of 3 M KOH was used and modeled numerically on Simulink MATLAB software. The converter and electrolytic cells configuration were designed for 1000, 800, 600 and 400 W/m2 solar irradiances. The results indicate that the required inductor decreased from 2.2 mH to 1.1 mH while the required capacitor increased from 10 mF to 27 mF as the solar irradiance increased. In a dynamic condition, the converter efficiency reached a maximum of 94.35%. Further, hydrogen production achieves 4.81 to 5.93 kg-H2/year as the installed electrolytic cell’s capacity increased from 70.2 to 174.9 W. Abstract:Water and energy are the two most essential assets for a sustainable global human society. However, the high carbon footprint and global warming effects caused by non-renewable sources have made energy transition a key element to ensure sustainable development. Currently, hydrogen produced from water supplied by renewable energy is considered an ideal and sustainable energy carrier for the future. Herein, we investigate experimentally and theoretically using MatLab modeling the production of hydrogen via PV supplied alkaline electrolysis of water coupled to 40 kHz ultrasonic bath. Nickel plates and nickel foam were used as electrode’s material immerged in 25% of KOH electrolyte while a 12V solar panel was used as a green source of power supply. The experimental and the modeling results related to the ultrasounds effect on hydrogen production efficiency showed a high agreement. The integration of ultrasound showed a reduction in electrode coverage by bubbles of approximately 54.8%, which was equivalent to 9.32% of the reduction in cell voltage according to the experiments.
