Abstract:An analysis of transport phenomena in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is presented, with a focus on the modelling and assessment of non-isothermal and non-isobaric effects that have been neglected in previous studies. A model is formulated for a complete fuel cell taking into account diffusion through the porous electrodes of the humidified fuel (H-2, CO2 and H2O(v)) and oxidant gases (O-2, N-2) and H2O(v)); the convective and electro-osmotic transport of liquid water in the electrodes and the membrane; and heat generation and transfer in the fuel cell. The thermodynamic equilibrium potential is calculated using the Nernst equation, and reaction kinetics is determined using the Butler-Volmer equation. Non-uniform distribution of gas pressure in the porous gas-diffusing electrodes and micro-hydrodynamics in very small pores (Knudsen diffusion) are also taken into account.The model is solved numerically to analyze fuel cell performance and water transport over a range of operating current densities. Non-uniform temperature and pressure distributions are found to have a large impact on the predicted liquid water and vapour fluxes in the anode and cathode diffusion layers. In particular, the results indicate that water management requirements (i.e., humidification or water removal) to prevent potential membrane dehydration or electrode flooding are much more conservative than predicted assuming isothermal conditions. Finally, it is found that, in the range of permeabilities of the porous electrodes used in PEMFCs (10(-16)-10(-17) m(2)), Knudsen diffusion has to be taken into account in modelling gas transport. Abstract:Several carbon blacks and graphite were investigated as candidates for diffusion layer preparation in polymer electrolyte fuel cell electrodes (PEFC). Single cell electrochemical characterizations under different working cell conditions were carried out on the electrodes by varying the kind of carbon in the diffusion layer. An improvement in cell performance was found by using Shawinigan Acetylene Black (SAB) as carbon, resulting in a measured power density of about 360 mW cm−2 in H2/air operation at 70°C and 1/1 bar. Pore size distribution and scanning electron microscopy analyses were carried out to help the understanding of the different behaviour of the investigated carbon diffusion layers.

Abstract:The effect on PEFC performance of a gas diffusion layer (GDL) with a hydrophilic layer (HL) between the microporous layer (MPL) and the carbon paper (CP) was investigated at high and low humidity at normal operating temperatures and at subfreezing temperatures. Scanning electron microscopic examination and micro-Raman spectroscopic examination were carried out on the three-layer structure (MPL, HL and CP). In addition, high magnification SEM images of the samples showed that the HL had smaller pores than the MPL of the HL-GDL. Thus, we consider that the capillary pressure in the pores of the HL was higher than that in the MPL of the HL-GDL, which suggests that the HL can absorb more water. The performances of cells using the GDL with or without a HL were compared. The cell using a GDL with a HL showed a higher performance than a cell with a conventional GDL in the high current density region at both high and low humidity. At high humidity, the HL can absorb generated water, improving water removal from the catalyst layer (CL) to the GDL, and inhibiting the stoppage of gas diffusion by condensed water in the CL. At low humidity, the HL enhanced the water retention in the MEA, inhibiting the decrease of proton conductivity of the electrolyte by dehydration. A cell using a GDL with a HL also showed superior performance during cold startup from -10°C, due to water removal by the HL, inhibiting the blockage of gas diffusion by condensed or frozen water in the CL. These results indicate that an HL placed between the MPL and the carbon paper of the GDL can improve the PEFC performance over a wide range of operating conditions, including high and low humidity at normal temperatures and cold startup from subfreezing temperatures.

Abstract:<p>This study aimed to improve the cold start characteristics of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) by applying patterned wettability to its microporous layer (MPL) and gas diffusion layer (GDL). An internal cell of the fuel cell stack, which was under adiabatic conditions on both sides, was targeted for cold start in this study. The adiabatic cell was simulated by adding side‐mounted heaters to a normal experimental cell to adjust the cell temperature. Experimental measurements were performed for three different combinations of GDLs and MPLs: conventional MPL (C‐MPL) and conventional GDL (C‐GDL), hybrid MPL (H‐MPL) and C‐GDL, and dual H‐MPL and hybrid GDL (H‐GDL). It is shown that the cold start performance improves in the order of C‐MPL and C‐GDL, H‐MPL and C‐GDL, and dual H‐MPL and H‐GDL. Thus, the dual H‐MPL and H‐GDL is considered to be promising for liquid exclusion and quick water movement in a membrane electrode assembly.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, influences of asymmetric GDEs on PEMFC performance with different thickness carbon papers and different PTFE loading were studied. Experimental results indicated that increase anode carbon paper thickness and decrease that of cathode will increase fuel cell performances, furthermore, enhance anode GDE hydrophobicity and reduce that of cathode will benefit in anode water content and cathode flooding preventing, which will in turn enhance fuel cell performances. In this study, fuel cell with asymetric anode GDE with 60% PTFE and cathode with 20% PTFE shows 5% power higher than symmetric 40% PTFE GDEs and 9.16% higher than commercial SIGRACET®GDEs. The fuel cell provides 643.2 mW·cm-2 maximum power density with self-humidifying condition at 50°C.

Abstract:In this investigation, a parametric study was performed using the transient cold-start model presented in our previous paper, in which the ice melting process and additional constitutive relations were newly included for transient cold-start simulations of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) from a sub-zero temperature (-20°C) to a normal operating temperature (80°C). The focus is placed on exploring the transient cold-start behavior of a PEFC for different porous properties of the catalyst layer (CL) and gas diffusion layer (GDL). This work elucidates the detailed effects of these properties on key cold-start phenomena such as ice freezing/melting and membrane hydration/dehydration processes. In particular, the simulation results highlight that designing a cathode CL with a high ionomer fraction helps to retard the rate of ice growth whereas a high ionomer fraction in the anode CL is not effective to mitigate the anode dry-out and membrane dehydration issues during PEFC cold-start.

Abstract:A three-dimensional, single-phase, isothermal numerical model of polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) is employed to investigate effects of lateral electron transport in gas diffusion layer (GDL) for the first time. An additional electron transport equation is solved in the catalyst and gas diffusion layers, and in the current collector. It is found that the lateral electronic resistance plays a critical role in determining the current distribution and cell performance. With reduced GDL thickness, the effect of the lateral electronic resistance becomes even stronger, because the cross-sectional area of GDL for lateral electron transport is smaller. Inclusion of GDL electron transport enables the thickness of GDL and widths of the gas channel and current collecting land to be optimized for better current distribution and cell performance. In addition, the present model enables: (1) direct incorporation of contact resistances emerging from GDL/catalyzed membrane and GDL/land interfaces in the solution process, (2) natural implementation of the total current as the more useful boundary condition than the cell voltage, and (3) stack modeling with cells connected in series and hence having the identical total current.

Abstract:The influence of the different properties of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) on the operation of a liquid-cooled, proton-exchange polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEMFC) has been studied in this work. Three-dimensional numerical simulations (CFD) have been conducted to compare several commercial GDLs with different properties, analyzing their influence on the cell performance. Specifically, four GDLs (AvCarb P-75, SIGRACET 34BC, SIGRACET 34BA and Toray TGP-H-090) have been studied, two of them including a microporous layer (MPL). The effect of the MPL has been inspected by contrast of the results obtained with the same GDL, with or without MPL. Potentiostatic boundary conditions have been applied, varying the electric potential between 1.05 and 0.35 V to obtain a representative i−V curve with enough resolution. Detailed postprocessing tasks were carried out to gain a deeper understanding on the phenomena occurring within the cell for each GDL. It can be concluded from this work that a high electrical conductivity and a high permeability lead to a better fuel cell performance. On the other hand, although the presence of MPL provides lower permeability leading to a worse overall performance, it has been shown that the lack of it may result in membrane dehydration and cell degradation issues.

Abstract:The design of a gas diffusion layer (GDL) is an effective way to manage water transport, thus improving the performance of air-cooled fuel cells. In the present study, three group designs of GDL with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)—uniformly doped, in-planed sandwich doped and through-plane gradient doped—are proposed, and their effects on the performance of air-cooled fuel cells are explored by numerical simulation. The distribution of key physical quantities in the cathode catalyst layer (CCL), current density and the uniformity of current density distribution in the CCL were analyzed in detail. The results show that properly reducing the amount of PTFE in GDL is beneficial to promoting the water retaining capacity of air-cooled fuel cells, and then improving the performance of fuel cells. The performance of the in-plane sandwich GDL design cannot exceed the design with 10% PTFE uniformly doped, and this design will aggravate the uneven distribution of current density in CCL. Compared with the design of GDL with 40% PTFE uniformly doped, the current density can be improved by 22% when operating at 0.6 V by gradient increasing the PTFE content in GDL from the GDL/MPL interface to the gas channel. Furthermore, this design can maintain as good a current density uniformity as uniformly doping schemes.

GDL is commonly used on three possible types of carbon fiber-con backing: carbon fabric, non-woven material, carbon paper. All three types have different properties, such as gas permeability, mechanical strength, electrical resistance, hydrophilicity and price. Paper is much cheaper than non-woven material, and replacing even one electrode could make a fuel cell cheaper. But replacement makes sense only if the same efficiency is maintained. In this work, two types of GDL as an anode in PEMFC were compared. As a result of the comparison, current-voltage and power characteristics were obtained.

Abstract:Gas diffusion layers (GDLs) play a crucial role in heat transfer and water management of cathode catalyst layers in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). Thermal and water gradients can accelerate electrocatalyst degradation and therefore the selection of GDLs can have a major influence on PEFC durability. Currently, the role of GDLs in electrocatalyst degradation is poorly studied. In this study, electrocatalyst accelerated stress test studies are performed on membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) prepared using three most commonly used GDLs. The effect of GDLs on electrocatalyst degradation is evaluated in both nitrogen (non-reactive) and air (reactive) gas environments at 100% relative humidity. In situ electrochemical characterization and extensive physical characterization is performed to understand the subtle differences in electrocatalyst degradation and correlated to the use of different GDLs. Overall, no difference is observed in the electrocatalyst degradation due to GDLs based on polarization curves at the end of life. But interestingly, MEA with a cracked microporous layer (MPL) in the GDL exhibited a higher electrocatalyst loading loss, which resulted in a lower and more heterogeneous increase in the average electrocatalyst nanoparticle size.

Abstract:The low-temperature start problem of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is a factor limiting their large-scale application. To improve the low-temperature start performance of a PEMFC, a novel microporous layer (MPL) and a gas diffusion layer (GDL) with planar wettability distribution, in which the hydrophilic and hydrophobic lines were arranged alternately in the in-plane direction, were investigated in this study. The influence of the dual planar-distributed wettability of the MPL and GDL on the normal temperature and low-temperature start performance of the PEMFC was investigated. Before performing the major experiment, the effect of the assembly pressure of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which has a significant effect on the PEMFC performance, was examined and determined to use in the experiment. The experimental results show that the dual hybrid MPL and GDL can further prolong the operation time of the PEMFC at different below-freezing temperatures owing to efficient water management and thus significantly improve the low-temperature start performance of the PEMFC.

Abstract:Carbon corrosion in a catalyst layer (CL) deteriorates the performance and durability of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), which are closely related to water management within these cells. This study investigates the characteristics of water behavior of two gas diffusion layers (GDLs) and compares their influence on degrees of degradation in the CL. First, the properties of the GDLs, including their thickness, pore size distribution, gas permeability, electrical resistance, contact angle, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) content, are evaluated. The dynamic behavior of liquid water is observed using a visualization cell and synchrotron X-ray imaging. Second, a modified accelerated stress test (AST), which includes a water generation reaction within the catalyst support protocol of the US Department of Energy (DOE), is performed. For assessing the degradation, we utilize polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, scanning electron microscopy, and field emission transmission electron microscopy. The results reveal that, even though GDL B contains a higher hydrophobic content than GDL A, it exhibits lower water discharge, indicating a reduced performance at high relative humidity (RH) levels. This is attributed to a low capillary pressure gradient, which is influenced not only by PTFE but also by the overall pore structure (i.e., porosity and pore size). Consequently, a high capillary pressure gradient can enhance water discharge and thereby mitigate carbon corrosion and Pt agglomeration in the CL. In addition, the application of the modified AST induces carbon corrosion with fewer cycles than that achieved using the DOE carbon support protocol.

Abstract:In the present work, a numerical model for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has been employed to investigate the effects of porosity and contact angle distributions of the porous layer on the performance of PEMFC. The three-dimensional, two-phase, and non-isothermal flow solver considers heat transfer, electrochemical reaction, and liquid water saturation. Various cases with different cathode gas diffusion layer (GDL) porosities are performed. The results showed that a better performance is achieved when the GDL porosity is increased because of the reduced mass transport resistance of oxygen. The effects of the porosity distributions on the PEMFC performance were examined by comparing the predictions from the cases with non-uniform porosity and uniform porosity in the cathode GDL. It was shown that the current density of the cases with non-uniform porosity is higher than that of the uniform porosity case when the operation voltage is low. This is due to the fact that non-uniform porosity distributions in the cathode GDL enhance the reactant transport. When the operation voltage is high, the current densities of the cases with non-uniform porosity and uniform porosity are almost the same. Moreover, the influence of contact angle distributions in cathode GDL was explored. Various cases with gradient-decreasing, gradient-increasing, and uniform constant contact angles from GDL/channel interface to GDL/catalyst layer interface were studied. It was found that the case with gradient-increasing contact angle has a better performance due to the larger capillary pressure difference to remove more water. The poor performance of the case with gradient-decreasing contact angle is related to the phenomenon of flooding in the catalyst layer.

Abstract:In this study, the cold-start process of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell has been numerically investigated under various ambient temperatures and operating currents, ranging from subzero to 283 K. The water desorbed from the electrolyte, when the cell temperature is below the freezing point, is assumed to exist in a state of either supercooled water or ice. The evolution of cell voltage, temperature, membrane water content, and the averaged volume fraction of supercooled water or ice in the catalyst layer and gas diffusion layer are presented. The results indicate that the cold-start process may fail due to ice blocking of the cathode catalyst layer when the desorbed water is in the form of ice and the ambient temperature is sufficiently low. However, when the desorbed water is in a supercooled state, it can diffuse from the cathode catalyst layer to the cathode gas diffusion layer, avoiding water clogging and enabling a successful cold-start process. During the cold-start process, as the ice undergoes a melting process, the membrane water content inside the membrane would increase rapidly, and a larger operation current with anode gas humidification is helpful to the cold-start process.

Abstract:Electrochemical studies on low catalyst loading gas diffusion electrodes for polymer electrolyte fuel cells are reported. The best performance is obtained with an electrode formed from 20 wt% Pt/C, 0.4 mg Pt cm−2 and 1.1 mg Nafion® cm−2 in the catalyst layer and 15% PTFE in a diffusion layer of 50 µm thickness, for both the cathode and the anode. However, it is also observed that the platinum requirement can be diminished to values close to 0.2 mg Pt cm−2 in the cathode and 0.1 mg pt cm−2 in the anode, without appreciably affecting the good characteristics of the fuel cell response. The experimental fuel cell data were analysed using theoretical models of the electrode structure and of the fuel cell system. It is seen that most of the electrode systems present limiting currents and some also show linear diffusion components arising from diffusion limitations in the gas channels and/or in the thin film of electrolyte covering the catalyst particles.

Abstract:Performance of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell with a Pd cathode catalyst was systemically investigated in this study. The Pd catalyst was directly formed on a gas diffusion layer by using electrodeposition (Pd/GDL). The electrodeposition formed aggregates of Pd nanoparticles on a gas diffusion layer with the preferred orientation of Pd(111) and Pd(200). In addition, the Pd aggregates mainly formed on the top surface of the gas diffusion layer. The membrane electrode assembly was fabricated with Pd/GDL as the cathode. The performance of the membrane electrode assembly was investigated by varying hot pressing parameters and back pressures, and the operating condition for the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell was optimized. Notably, introducing back pressure increased operating current density at 0.6 V by up to 45%. Durability of the membrane electrode assembly was also examined. Negligible deterioration of surface morphology of the Pd catalyst was observed even after accelerated stress testing, except for a slight increase in particle size. Abstract:Higher power density is a key technological goal for the deployment of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) in vehicles. Water production is proportional to current density and at high current densities water flooding in catalyst layers can result in significant mass transport limitations. A novel perfluoropolymers material, TeflonTM AF, is introduced as a hydrophobic agent to fabricate microporous layers (MPLs). The MPL ink with varying proportions of TeflonTM AF and Vulcan XC-72 carbon black is prepared and used to coat MPLs into the gas diffusion layers. X-ray computed tomography and mercury intrusion porosimetry are used to characterize the physical properties of the penetrated GDM. The performance of cells with the homemade MPLs are compared with commercial GDM cells under dry and wet operating conditions using varying backpressures. The results at high relative humidity and high backpressure show that the cells with homemade MPLs have less flooding than that with commercial GDM. Oxygen transport resistance measurements using the limiting current method show that the penetration of the MPL into the substrate has an undesirable effect of increasing oxygen transport resistance. The results are of benefit to understanding the water management and gas transport mechanism of MPL for fuel cells operating at both dry and wet conditions.

Abstract:The catalyst fabrication method, cell assembly, and operating conditions in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells impact the catalyst penetration into the gas diffusion layer (GDL), alter its porous structure, and, consequently, the overall cell performance. This study investigates the effect of the catalyst layer (CL) penetration thickness, catalyst loading amount, and cell compression during assembly on species and current distributions, and overall cell performance. GDLs with large penetration thickness show a substantial resistance to reactant and proton transport, particularly at high current densities resulting in a drop in the cell performance. Higher catalyst loading results in greater penetration, negating the benefit of enhanced kinetics. An attempt is made to investigate the interplay between the effect of reactant and proton transport limitations on their distributions and cell performance. The combined effect of catalyst penetration and cell compression during the assembly has a crucial impact on cell performance with the starvation of reactants at high-density regions. The study highlights the necessity of optimizing the penetration thickness, catalyst loading, and cell assembly to achieve maximum cell performance.
