Abstract:A flexible integrated supercapacitor based on three dimensional reduced graphene oxide/graphene oxide/reduced graphene oxide (RGO-GO-RGO) foam has been fabricated via a laser direct writing strategy. The supercapacitor with outstanding mechanical properties shows a high capacitance performance which can be easily regulated by controlling the compressive state of the electrodes. This work provides a new platform for potential applications in the next-generation intelligent power supply of electronics.

Abstract:The increasing demand for portable and wearable electronics requires high reliability of devices for continuous miniaturization, and provides challenges for the dimensionally-confined bottom-up assembly methods which typically begin with materials such as graphene oxide (GO). However, GO based devices suffer from complicated synthesis procedures and lower device performance due to the presence of oxygen functionalities on the electrode materials, as well as the need to ensure a good interface between the electrode material and the electrolyte used. Here, a facile, two-step, top-down strategy was used to fabricate thin, all-in-one (PVA/H3PO4)/graphene/graphite paper-like electrodes. The assembled flexible, all-solid-state micro-supercapacitor devices exhibit excellent performance compared to previously reported values, such as a high volumetric capacitance of similar to 3.6F.cm(-3) even after 20000 cycles. Notably, the devices also showed excellent rate performance with extremely high specific capacitance retention of up to 94% as the current density increased from 0.5 to 5 A.cm(-3), indicating promise for high power applications. The paper-like electrodes were tailored to less than 0.5 mm width for further miniaturization and suffered from minimal capacitance attenuation. The excellent mechanical flexibility, capacity, and reliability indicate their promising application in energy storage devices. (C) The Author(s) 2018. Published by ECS.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are extensively used for electrode materials of supercapacitors under their unique characteristics like customizable pore size, plentiful active sites and tunable structure. However, the MOFs lack adequate electrical conductivity and satisfactory stability, when directly applied to supercapacitor electrode materials, limiting the further improvement of their electrochemical properties. Accordingly, three-dimensional porous aerogels (rOHNM-AGs) have been achieved by embedding open-hollow nickel-based metal–organic framework microspheres between graphene layers. Under the controllable and highly ordered metal nodes as well as organic linkers, the prepared rOHNM-AGs still reserve the preponderance of MOF materials with multifarious exceptional constituent and configurational benefits. Furthermore, the remarkable electrical conductivity from graphene leads to a significant increase in electron/ion transport rate. In addition, charge-transfer interaction between the acceptor of OH – ions and the donor of rOHNM-AGs has been exposed by the density functional theory calculations. Moreover, a pliable and high tensile rOHNM-AGs/PVA/KOH film electrode has been fabricated by the PVA/KOH gel-electrolyte, which is capable of curving at multifarious angles. For actual utilizations, the manufactured supercapacitor apparatus can run a multi-purpose display for over 15 mins. Therefore, this groundbreaking research furnishes a new inspiration for preparing composite electrodes based on MOFs and graphene for flexible asymmetric supercapacitors.

Abstract:We have successfully synthesized the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology-1 (HKUST-1) metal organic framework (MOF)-graphene oxide (GO) hybrids (noted as H-G) onto carbon nanotube film (CNTF) and further electrochemically deposited poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) to give a flexible conductive porous electrode (noted as PEDOT/H-G-CNTF), which shows excellent electrochemical performance due to the mesoporous structure of H-G in PEDOT/H-15G-CNTF hybrid. Electrochemical studies show that the PEDOT/H-15G-CNTF exhibits an exceptional areal capacitance of 128 mF cm(-2) at 10 mV s(-1) than that of PEDOT/HKUST-1-CNTF (81 mF cm(-2)) in a three-electrode system, indicating that the incorporation of GO into the hybrids effectively boosts the capacitive performance of PEDOT/HKUST-1-CNTF. To further explore the capacitive performance of PEDOT/H-15G-CNTF electrode, a symmetric flexible solid-state supercapacitor has also been assembled and tested. The assembled optimum flexible supercapacitor shows superior areal capacitance (37.8 mF cm(-2)) at the scan rate of 5 mV s(-1), and good charge/discharge capability using PVA/H3PO4 gel electrolyte. The volumetric energy density for this device is calculated to be 0.051 mWh cm(-3), with a volumetric power density is 2.1 mW cm(-3) at current density of 0.4 mA cm(-2). Rational Design of Hybrid Co3O4/graphene Films: Free-standing Flexible Electrodes for High Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Flexible electrodes with superior mechanical and electrochemical properties are essential for flexible and foldable supercapacitors (SCs) for subminiature and integrated energy storage devices. Herein, we developed a novel and scalable method to fabricate highly flexible free-standing Co3O4/graphene film (GF) as robust supercapacitor electrode, in which nanostructured Co3O4 arrays directly grow on highly flexible GF substrates. Originating from the high mass loading of the Co3O4 as well as the synergistic effects of electrochemical active Co3O4 and conductive GF, the fabricated Co3O4/GF electrodes deliver outstanding electrochemical properties without current collectors or binders. The Co3O4 phase in the Co3O4/GF delivers a high capacitance contribution of 652 F g(-1) after 3000 cycles at a current density of 2 A g(-1), four times higher than the pristine Co3O4. More importantly, a superior rate capability of 665 F g(-1) was achieved at a high current density of 20 A g(-1). Free-standing Reduced Graphene Oxide/MoO3-x Composite Film with High Performance for Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:For the fabrication of flexible supercapacitors, the biggest challenge is still the preparation of flexible electrodes with both high gravimetric and areal specific capacitances. Herein, we have successfully designed a novel rGO (reduced graphene oxide)/MoO3-x composite film electrodes for high-performance flexible supercapacitor. The as-prepared electrodes exhibit a galvanostatic capacitance of 1374 F.g(-1) and an area specific capacitance as high as 21300 mF.cm(-2) at 0.1 A.g(-1), which have been significantly larger compared with most recent reports. Meanwhile, the rGO/MoO3-x composite electrodes have remarkable flexibility and solid mechanical strength. This composite film could be easily folded into various shapes, and then could recover its original appearance without any crease. Excellent cycle stability has also been validated with nearly 100% capacitance retention even after 30,000 cycles. The electrochemical performance of rGO/MoO3-x composite films remain surprisingly stable even after continuous U-shape bending up to 10,000 times. Moreover, flexible all-solid-state symmetric supercapacitors were successfully fabricated with PVA (polyvinyl alcohol)-H2SO4 gel electrolyte. Our strategy provides a convenient and versatile method for designing new flexible electrode for energy storage devices and is promising for portable and wearable electronics.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors (FSCs) have attracted widespread attention of many researchers as a type of portable energy storage devices. However, there are still challenges in preparing renewable and inexpensive electrode materials. Herein, we prepared the porous carbon (PC) by the two-step process involving hydrothermal method and low-temperature heat treatment using corn cob lignin as the carbon source, and different types for PC were obtained by changing the temperature of low temperature heat treatment (100 °C–300 °C). The flexible electrode film was prepared by combining the obtained corn cob lignin-based PC with reduced graphene oxide (RGO), in addition, we investigated the effect of PC obtained by different low-temperature heat treatment (100 °C, 150 °C, 200 °C, 250 °C, and 300 °C) on the electrochemical properties of the composite electrode. The optimal low-temperature heat treatment temperature (250 °C) was determined and the PC250/RGO film electrodes displayed a high area specific capacitance of 636 mF/cm2 with a mass of 2.2 mg/cm2 (specific capacitance of 289 F/g) at 0.2 mA/cm2 and 82% of the capacitance was retained after 10,000 charge and discharge cycles at 5 mA/cm2, at the same time on the electrode film flexibility test, the influence of different bending angle on the electrochemical properties can be ignored. The assembled supercapacitor had the advantages of flexible, lightweight, low price, and environment friendly, which can achieve area specific capacitance of 324.5 mF/cm2 at 0.2 mA/cm2 and 91.8% capacitance retention after 1000 charging/discharging cycles. These good electrochemical properties illustrate the application prospects of composite electrode materials in wearable and portable electronic devices.

Abstract:Flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors based on graphene fibers are demonstrated in this study. Surface-deposited oxide nanoparticles are used as pseudo-capacitor electrodes to achieve high capacitance. This supercapacitor electrode has an areal capacitance of 42 mF cm(-2), which is comparable to the capacitance for fiber-based supercapacitors reported to date. During the bending and cycling of the fiber-based supercapacitor, the stability could be maintained without sacrificing the electrochemical performance, which provides a novel and simple way to develop flexible, lightweight and efficient graphene-based devices.

Abstract:The rapid development of intelligent electronic products and wearable devices has stimulated the research upsurge on flexible supercapacitors. However, achieving supercapacitors with both high flexibility and high energy density remains a huge challenge. Herein, we develop a novel strategy to fabricate flexible asymmetric supercapacitor comprised of carbonized paper fiber/graphene/tannic acid (CGTA), manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) and polypyrrole (PPy) based film electrode. The electrode synthesized via electrochemical deposition avoided the necessity to use non-conductive binders and offered excellent electrochemical performance. The resultant MnO 2 @CGTA and film electrode exhibit high areal specific capacitance of 0.97 F cm −2 and 0.99 F cm −2 at a current density of 1 mA cm −2 , respectively. The structural integrity provided by MnO 2 @CGTA and film electrode facilitated excellent electrochemical stability with capacitance retention of 89.93 % and 91.06 % after 5000 charge/discharge cycles, respectively. Furthermore, the flexible asymmetric supercapacitor (MnO 2 @CGTA//) is assembled and it demonstrates high specific capacitance of about 1.383 F cm −2 at 1 mA cm −2 , excellent energy density of 192.08 μWh cm −2 at a power density of 0.5 mW cm −2 , and good cycle stability of 90.12 % capacitance retention after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. Even after 500 bending/unbending cycles, still about 86.43 % of its initial capacitance is retained.

Abstract:A highly flexible solid-state supercapacitor was fabricated through a simple flame synthesis method and electrochemical deposition process based on a carbon nanoparticles/MnO(2) nanorods hybrid structure using polyvinyl alcohol/H(3)PO(4) electrolyte. Carbon fabric is used as a current collector and electrode (mechanical support), leading to a simplified, highly flexible, and lightweight architecture. The device exhibited good electrochemical performance with an energy density of 4.8 Wh/kg at a power density of 14 kW/kg, and a demonstration of a practical device is also presented, highlighting the path for its enormous potential in energy management.

In-situ Chemical Reduction Produced Graphene Paper for Flexible Supercapacitors with Impressive Capacitive Performance

Abstract:For practical applications of graphene-based materials in flexible supercapacitors, a technological breakthrough is currently required to fabricate high-performance graphene paper by a facile method. Herein, highly conductive (similar to 6900 S m(-1)) graphene paper with loose multilayered structure is produced by a high-efficiency in-situ chemical reduction process, which assembles graphite oxide suspensions into film and simultaneously conducts chemical reduction. Graphene papers with different parameters (including different types and doses of reductants, different thicknesses and areas of films) are successfully fabricated through this in-situ chemical reduction method. Meanwhile, the influences of the graphene papers with different parameters upon the supercapacitor performance are systematically investigated. Flexible supercapacitor based on the graphene paper exhibits high areal capacitance (152.4 mF cm(-2) at current density of 2.0 mA cm(-2) in aqueous electrolyte), and excellent rate performance (88.7% retention at 8.0 mA cm(-2)). Furthermore, bracelet-shaped all-solid supercapacitor with fascinating cycling stability (96.6% retention after 10 000 cycles) and electrochemical stability (an almost negligible capacity loss under different bending states and 99.6% retention after 4000 bending cycles) is established by employing the graphene paper electrode material and polymer electrolyte. Abstract:The research of high-performance flexible supercapacitors is urgent due to the rapid development of wearable and portable electronics. The key challenge is the preparation of flexible electrodes with high areal capacitance since electrodes are the most important part of supercapacitors. Compared to those conventional electrodes loading with typical flexible substrates such as textile, PET, paper et al, free-standing electrodes have many advantages such as more efficient capacity contribution, solidly embedded active materials and thinner thickness. Herein, we have successfully fabricated a novel sandwich-like structure free-standing MoO_3-rGO (reduced graphene oxide) composite film electrode for flexible supercapacitors using simple vacuum filtration method followed by HI reduction process. The obtained MoO_3-rGO composite film electrode shows excellent electrochemical performance, whose areal specific capacitance reaches 8972 mF·cm^−2 (1.5 mA·cm^−2). Here, MoO_3 provides pseudocapacitance and rGO provides double-layer capacitance. After cycling for 2000 cycles, the capacity retention is 86.7%, showing good cycle stability. Besides, the as-prepared composite film has good flexibility and will not break easily during following bending, rolling, folding or twisting steps. This study has been approved to be an important step for the high-performance electrode design for free-standing flexible supercapacitors.
Highly Flexible Reduced Graphene Oxide@polypyrrole–polyethylene Glycol Foam for Supercapacitors

Abstract:A flexible and free-standing 3D reduced graphene oxide@polypyrrole-polyethylene glycol (RGO@PPy-PEG) foam was developed for wearable supercapacitors. The device was fabricated sequentially, beginning with the electrodeposition of PPy in the presence of a PEG-borate on a sacrificial Ni foam template, followed by a subsequent GO wrapping and chemical reduction process. The 3D RGO@PPy-PEG foam electrode showed excellent electrochemical properties with a large specific capacitance of 415 F g(-1)and excellent long-term stability (96% capacitance retention after 8000 charge-discharge cycles) in a three electrode configuration. An assembled (two-electrode configuration) symmetric supercapacitor using RGO@PPy-PEG electrodes exhibited a remarkable specific capacitance of 1019 mF cm(-2)at 2 mV s(-1)and 95% capacitance retention over 4000 cycles. The device exhibits extraordinary mechanical flexibility and showed negligable capacitance loss during or after 1000 bending cycles, highlighting its great potential in wearable energy devices.

Abstract:Large-area monolayer graphene by chemical vapor deposition as electrode in electronic devices always suffers from shortages of low conductivity and high contact resistance. In this work, we demonstrate a composite electrode by depositing a continuous and homogeneous ultrathin 7-nm Au film on monolayer graphene with low average sheet resistance of 24.6 Omega/square and high transmittance of 74.6% at 520 nm. The excellent properties of the composite electrode are attributed to the suppressed Au Volmer-Weber growth mode of the ultrathin Au film by the organized hexagonal carbon lattices of graphene. Rigid supercapacitor based on the composite electrode exhibits a capacitance of 81.5 mu F/cm(2) at the scan rate of 0.1 V/s, which is 17 times higher than the device based on monolayer graphene. Flexible supercapacitor based on the composite electrode can be bending at curvature radius of 2 mm and with slight performance decrease over 1800 bending cycles.

Abstract:Fiber-based supercapacitors (FSCs) are new members of the energy storage family. They present excellent flexibility and have promising applications in lightweight, flexible, and wearable devices. One of the existing challenges of FSCs is enhancing their energy density while retaining the flexibility. We developed a facile and cost-effective method to fabricate a highly capacitive positive electrode based on hierarchical ferric-cobalt-nickel ternary oxide nanowire arrays/graphene fibers and a negative electrode based on polyaniline-derived carbon nanorods/graphene fibers. The elegant microstructures and excellent electrochemical performances of both electrodes enabled us to construct a highperformance flexible asymmetric graphene fiber-based supercapacitor device with an operating voltage of 1.4 V, a specific capacitance up to 61.58 mF·cm–2, and an energy density reaching 16.76 μW·h·cm–2. Moreover, the optimal device presents an outstanding cycling stability with 87.5% initial capacitance retention after 8,000 cycles, and an excellent flexibility with a capacitance retention of 90.9% after 4,000 cycles of repetitive bending.

Abstract:Flexible energy storage units are highly desired to meet the ever-increasing demands for flexible electronics. In this paper, highly flexible solid-state supercapacitors are fabricated using MnO2-decorated nanocarbon electrodes and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide-poly(vinylidene fluoride)hexafluoropropylene ([EMIM][NTf2]-PVdF(HFP)) gel electrolytes. The flexible electrodes are prepared by electrodepositing MnO2 onto the carbon nanotube/carbon nanoonion (CNT/CNO) films. CNT/CNO films have a large surface area for MnO2 deposition and work as mechanical supports with high flexibility and light weight. CNOs act as spacers to separate CNTs, introducing mesopores inside the CNT/CNO films for preventing pore blocking during MnO2 deposition. The supercapacitor exhibits enhanced electrochemical performance with an energy density of 16.4 W h(-1) kg(-1) at a power density of 33.3 kW kg(-1) by using the [EMIM][NTf2]-PVdF(HFP) gel electrolyte. Moreover, the supercapacitors can exhibit high electrochemical performance under large mechanical stress, making the devices suitable for flexible electronics.

Abstract:Micro-supercapacitors have attracted considerable attention due to their feasibility as power supplies for future integration into autonomous and portable devices. However, the conventional lab-on-chip fabrication method requires multiple patterning and metallization procedures, while the rigid substrate restricts versatility in applications such as flexible and wearable electronics. Here, we report the low cost, facile and scalable fabrication process of an all solid state flexible micro-supercapacitor on commercially available photo paper for the first time. Three dimensional interconnected coral-like polyaniline-manganese oxide composite material is electrochemically deposited on the interdigital finger electrodes. Electrochemical measurements reveal that the high aspect ratio finger electrode pattern and small gap interdigital finger electrode design is crucial to ensure superior performance. The optimized device shows an ultra high areal energy density of 6.3 mu W h cm(-2) at a power density of 35 mu W cm(-2) (94.73 mF cm(-2) at 0.1 mA cm(-2)), while it maintains 4.8 mu W h cm(-2) at a power density of 3500 mu W cm(-2) (71.43 mF cm(-2) at 10.0 mA cm(-2)). Meanwhile, it also has good flexibility. Such a flexible micro-supercapacitor is promising for future applications in lightweight, wearable or foldable electronics.
