Abstract:Density functional theory calculations with periodic boundary conditions were performed to clarify the interaction between lithium atoms and a graphene sheet. Three types of graphene sheetsdefect-free, containing carbon vacancies VCn (n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 10, 13, 16, and 24), and their hydrogen-terminated carbon vacancieswere examined in this study. We found that a lithium atom inserted into bare carbon vacancy VCn (n ≥ 3) is more stable than that in bulk lithium metal and that it is trapped by the vacancy. On the other hand, a lithium atom inserted into the hydrogen-terminated carbon vacancies is less stable than that in bulk metal. These results suggest that the electrochemical in-plane insertion of lithium ions into the bare carbon vacancies is possible, whereas the insertion into the hydrogen-terminated vacancies is unlikely because the precipitation of lithium metal is energetically more favorable.

Abstract:Based on the density functional theory (DFT) with allowance for spin polarization or the local spin density approximation (LSDA), we calculate the adsorption and diffusion properties of a lithium atom on a graphene ( ) monolayer with monovacancy ( ) as the anode material for an -ion battery. The DFT LSDA calculations are performed in relaxed 5 × 5 and 6 × 6 supercells and based on graphene with the monovacancy + lithium adatom complex . Based on the calculated values of the adsorption energy of the lithium atom , the energetically stable location of the lithium adatom is determined on a monolayer of supercells in and . The calculation results show that the adatom energetically prefers to be adsorbed in the pit position (H-site) rather than adsorbed from above (T-site) of the carbon atom in the monolayer. The DFT LSDA calculated electronic band structure and local total and partial magnetic moment of supercell atoms are consistent with the calculations performed by the generalized gradient approximation (GGA)-PBE functional for the H-, B-, and T-sites of graphene. Taking into account the experimentally obtained diffusion coefficients of lithium in two-layer graphene in the structural packing of an AB package and the temperature (263–333 K) dependence of Li diffusion in two-layer graphene, which is described by the Arrhenius law, the diffusion activation energy of is calculated at concentrations of = 0.06–0.51 in Li x C 12 graphene in the AB packaging.

Abstract:Interactions between defects in graphene and the lattice distortion and electronic charge localization induced by the defect interactions are studied by tight-binding (TB) calculations using the recently developed three-center TB potential model. The interaction between two 5–7 Stone–Wales defects gliding along the zig-zag (ZZ) direction of graphene, which has been observed by experiment, is studied at first to validate the TB calculations. Reconstructed divacancy defect pairs and di-adatom defect pairs separated along the glide ZZ and armchair (AC) directions in graphene, respectively, are then studied. We show that the characteristics (i.e., attractive or repulsive) and the strength of interactions between these defects are dependent on the type of defects and on the direction and distance of the defect separation on graphene. Although elastic interaction due to graphene lattice distortion induced by the defect has significant contribution to the total interaction energy, redistribution of electron charges caused by the defects also plays an important role in the defect–defect interaction.

Abstract:The lithiation and delithiation processes within graphene sheets is studied in‐situ by spherical and chromatic aberration‐corrected transmission electron microscopy. Ultrathin fcc lithium crystals are found to nucleate at single carbon vacancies during lithiation. However, during delithiation, oxygen atoms initially embedded inside the lithium crystals agglomerate at the edges of the crystals and explain the formation of amorphous lithium oxide patches. Using advanced in situ transmission electron microscopy, the lithiation and delithiation processes into graphene sheets are studied and significant differences are detected in the structural evolution of the system. Thin fcc lithium crystals with faceted shapes are formed between graphene sheets during lithiation, but are transformed into irregular patches during delithiation. It is found that defects such as vacancies in graphene and impurity atoms play the key role in these processes. Specifically, during intercalation the lithium crystals nucleate at vacancies in graphene, while upon delithiation the impurity oxygen atoms initially embedded at octahedral interstitial positions inside the lithium crystals agglomerate at the edges of the crystals, thus giving rise to the formation of amorphous lithium oxide patches, where lithium ions are trapped.

Lithium-ion batteries employing graphite as the anode material are now widely used in powering electronic gadgets like, mobile phones, laptops, electronic watches and calculators and also to provide required power to run engine of electric vehicles. However, storage capacity, open circuit voltage, energy density and battery life are the major considerations on which researchers are trying different alternatives to achieve better performance of the battery. In this research, Beryllium-doped and defective graphenes have been investigated by employing the ab initio DFT method. It has been found that graphene with a defect and Be–doped graphene with defects can serve as an efficient materials for anode in Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Lithium adsorption on high-surface-area porous carbon (PC) nanomaterials provides superior electrochemical energy storage performance dominated by capacitive behavior. In this study, we demonstrate the influence of structural defects in the graphene lattice on the bonding character of adsorbed lithium. Thermally evaporated lithium was deposited in vacuum on the surface of as-grown graphene-like PC and PC annealed at 400 °C. Changes in the electronic states of carbon were studied experimentally using surface-sensitive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. NEXAFS data in combination with density functional theory calculations revealed the dative interactions between lithium sp2 hybridized states and carbon π*-type orbitals. Corrugated defective layers of graphene provide lithium with new bonding configurations, shorter distances, and stronger orbital overlapping, resulting in significant charge transfer between carbon and lithium. PC annealing heals defects, and as a result, the amount of lithium on the surface decreases. This conclusion was supported by electrochemical studies of as-grown and annealed PC in lithium-ion batteries. The former nanomaterial showed higher capacity values at all applied current densities. The results demonstrate that the lithium storage in carbon-based electrodes can be improved by introducing defects into the graphene layers.

Adsorption and Mobility of Lithium on Pristine and Stone-Thrower-Wales Defective Silicenes

Abstract:To explore and rationalize the enhancement of the capacity of lithium-ion batteries, ab initio density functional theory was employed to investigate the adsorption and diffusion properties of a lithium atom on and through pristine and Stone-Thrower-Wales (STW)-defective silicenes. The theoretical calculations indicate that an enhancement of binding energy for a lithium atom on defective silicenes is found and the adsorption on pristine and defective silicenes is stronger than those on their graphene counterpart. The lithium mobility on pristine and defective silicenes is comparable to those on their graphene analogue, but the lithium atom migrates more easily and fast through the pores in silicene nanosheets than through the pores in corresponding graphene nanosheets. In most cases, van der Waals (vdW) interactions contribute 0.78-0.99 eV to the binding energies. They can cause either an increase or a decrease in diffusion barrier dependent on the competition of their contributions to the energies between the transition state and initial structures. The vdW interactions are dominant for adsorption, but some time their effects on diffusion barrier are only marginal due to that their contributions may cancel each other out.

Abstract:Carbon-coated silicon materials are considered as promising anode materials in high-capacity lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Theoretically, using graphene as the anode material in the LIB would afford high electrical conductivity, mechanical stability of Si, and suppression of the unstable solid–electrolyte interface. However, its usage is hindered by its electrochemical characteristic, which is not electrochemically active when combined with lithium. Therefore, research on graphene as the anode and coated material in LIBs has been conducted using defect engineering to enhance the storage capacity of graphene. Although the electrochemical characteristics of various defects in graphene have been studied experimentally and theoretically, graphene-based composite anode materials such as graphene–silicon composite electrodes have rarely been studied from the electrochemical and mechanical perspectives. In this study, lithium adsorptions are conducted on various defected graphene and graphene–silicon composites using density functional theory calculation. The formation energies of Li on the various defected graphene are assessed, and the mechanical strengths of the graphene–silicon composites are analyzed. Our calculations validate that the defects in graphene enhance the electrochemical adsorptions and interfacial mechanical strengths of the graphene and graphene–silicon composites. During lithiation, the defects mediate greater interfacial adhesion of the silicon–graphene composite. Hence, we elucidate that defected graphene increases the electro-chemo mechanical stabilities of silicon composites in high-capacity LIBs.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent progresses and remaining technical challenges in Li-S battery, we employ defective graphene as a prototype cathode framework to illustrate how battery performance is influenced by the mesoporous carbon materials. We show that the immobilization of S unavoidably sacrifices its ability to further interact with Li, which leads to an enhanced cycle life but a decreased capacity. Based on our calculated results, we suggest a suitable S binding-energy range of ∼4–5 eV to balance the battery stability and capability under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions. Our results may promote the understanding and architecture design of Li-S battery.

Abstract:In the present study we investigate the irradiation-defects hybridized graphene scaffold as one potential building material for the anode of Li-ion batteries. Designating the Wigner V22 defect as a representative, we illustrate the interplay of Li atoms with the irradiation-defects in graphene scaffolds. We examine the adsorption energetics and diffusion kinetics of Li in the vicinity of a Wigner V22 defect using density functional theory calculations. The equilibrium Li adsorption sites at the defect are identified and shown to be energetically preferable to the adsorption sites on pristine (bilayer) graphene. Meanwhile the minimum energy paths and corresponding energy barriers for Li migration at the defect are determined and computed. We find that while the defect is shown to exhibit certain trapping effects on Li motions on the graphene surface, it appears to facilitate the interlayer Li diffusion and enhance the charge capacity within its vicinity because of the reduced interlayer spacing and characteristic symmetry associated with the defect. Our results provide critical assessment for the application of irradiated graphene scaffolds in Li-ion batteries.

First-Principles Study on Migration and Coalescence of Point Defects in Monolayer Graphene

Abstract:Graphene is a promising material due to its outstanding properties. Point defects can be created artificially and tailor/improve the relative properties of pristine graphene. Defective graphene is potential material for electronic devices and sensors. Under irradiation or heat treatment, defects may diffuse and aggregate together. Here we perform density functional theory (DFT) to illustrate the migration and coalescence processes of the point defects. We find that the presence of single-vacancy (SV) defect stimulates the migration of another SV defect to bring them together and form the adjacent single vacancy defects. The adjacent single vacancy defects can combine into a divacancy defect, and we study the path. We also study the structural rearrangement of divacancy defect and conclude the relative stability of different types of divacancy defects. In addition, we find that divacancy defect [V-2 (5-8-5) defect] is ready to be healed by a neighboring adatom defect. In comparison, divacancy defect [V-2 (555-777) defect] cannot be healed by an adatom defect directly. Our results provide the mechanism of migration and coalescence processes of point defects in graphene, which is useful for nanoengineering of graphene with defect.

Abstract:In molecular dynamics simulation (MD), the choice of potential function is a crucial element for accurately simulating the kinetic properties of lithium ion intercalation, storage, and diffusion in graphite systems. This work employed a combination of non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) and density-functional theory (DFT) for simulation and analysis. The findings indicate that the AIREBO potential function precisely describes the motion of ordered lithium ion between graphite layers, consisting with the models proposed by Rüdorff and Hofmann (R-H) and Daumas and Hérold (D-H). Conversely, for the folded structure within the graphite layer, the Tersoff potential function provides a more suitable description, consisting with the localized-domains model. Further analysis reveals that with increasing Li-ion concentration, the voltage, Young's modulus, and ultimate tensile strength of the LixC6 system all exhibit a decreasing trend. Notably, the diffusion coefficient of lithium ion within the graphite layer vary widely, spanning from 10-6cm2/s to 10-16cm2/s. In summary, this work is anticipated to provide further insights into the mechanism of lithium ion intercalation and diffusion kinetics in graphite electrodes. It also serves as a valuable theoretical framework for guiding the design and optimization of high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:We study the intervalley scattering in defected graphene by low-temperature transport measurements. The scattering rate is strongly suppressed when defects are charged. This finding highlights "screening" of the short-range part of a potential by the long-range part. Experiments on calcium-adsorbed graphene confirm the role of a long-range Coulomb potential. This effect is applicable to other multivalley systems, provided that the charge state of a defect can be electrically tuned. Our result provides a means to electrically control valley relaxation and has important implications in valley dynamics in valleytronic materials.

Abstract:Here, we report a facile method to generate a high density of atomic-scale defects in graphene on metal foil and show how these defects affect the electronic structures of graphene layers. Our scanning tunneling microscope measurements, complemented by first-principles calculations, reveal that the atomic-scale defects result in both the intervalley and intravalley scattering of graphene. The Fermi velocity is reduced in the vicinity area of the defect due to the enhanced scattering.

Abstract:Graphene has attracted widespread attention for development of high-performance lithium-ion battery anode materials. In this paper, the lithium storage mechanisms of multilayer graphene, few-layer graphene, and reduced graphene oxide electrodes are investigated, and the influences of layers and defects in the microstructure are analyzed. The evolution of microstructure deformation of different graphene electrodes, combined with the diffusivity and distribution of lithium, is systemically investigated by in-situ Raman spectroscopy during lithiation and delithiation. The results show that graphene electrodes with different structures exhibit different mechanical behaviors and thus different lithium storage capacities. Mechanical analysis indicates that although the surfaces and defects are active, interlayer lithium insertion contributes the most lithium storage capacity. As the number of graphene layers increases and/or defects decrease, more interlayer spaces would be provided. Thus, the lithium storage capacity of multilayer graphene is significantly higher than those of few-layer graphene and reduced graphene oxide. An in-depth understanding of the effect of the microstructure on the lithium storage behavior of graphene electrodes will provide an experimental basis for development of high-performance graphene electrodes.

Abstract:Graphene with single vacancy (SV) defect is investigated as the electrode substrate for Li-S battery and its reactions towards lithium polysulfide (LiPS) molecules are investigated by DFT calculations. It is found that the presence of SV defect changes the local electronic structure of graphene and enhances the adsorption energy to Li2Sx (x = 1,2,4,8) molecule, especially for the insoluble final discharge product. When Li2S molecule approaches SV defected graphene, the S atom in Li2S directly connects to the C atom having unpaired electron in graphene. This unique S-C binding behavior is very seldom reported previously. Compared with other LiPSs, the adsorption height of Li2S on SV defected graphene is the lowest due to this strong S-C binding. At the same time, the interaction between SV defected graphene and Li2S2 molecule is also enhanced compared with pristine graphene due to the presence of unpaired electron, although the adsorption energy and adsorption height is smaller than that in the case of Li2S. Based on electronic structure analysis, covalent character bond is found between S and C atom because that the frontier orbitals of Li2S molecule and SV defected graphene have close energy and the symmetry also adapts. However, interaction between Li2S2 and SV defected graphene material is through a Li-C bond with ionic character, in which Li2S2 molecule act as an electron donor. The Li-C bond is also found when Li2S molecule is adsorbed on the pristine graphene. This work provides new insights to LiPS adsorption on carbon materials and gives inspiration to research on cathode of Li-S battery. Since it can work as the effective nucleation sites to enhance the affinity to Li2S, carbon materials with SV defect might be a good cathode substrate for Li-S battery to make Li2S particles deposit uniformly. Further theoretical and experimental research on the following growth of Li2S particle around the SV defect is still ongoing.

Self Healing of Defected Graphene

Abstract:For electronics applications, defects in graphene are usually undesirable because of their ability to scatter charge carriers, thereby reduce the carrier mobility. It would be extremely useful if the damage can be repaired. In this work, we employ Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electrical measurements to study defects in graphene introduced by argon plasma bombardment. We have found that majority of these defects can be cured by a simple thermal annealing process. The self-healing is attributed to recombination of mobile carbon adatoms with vacancies. With increasing level of plasma induced damage, the self-healing becomes less effective.
Lithium Diffusion in Silicon Encapsulated with Graphene

Abstract:The model of a graphene (Gr) sheet putting on a silicon (Si) substrate is used to simulate the structures of Si microparticles wrapped up in a graphene cage, which may be the anode of lithium-ion batteries (LIBS) to improve the high-volume expansion of Si anode materials. The common low-energy defective graphene (d-Gr) structures of DV5-8-5, DV555-777 and SV are studied and compared with perfect graphene (p-Gr). First-principles calculations are performed to confirm the stable structures before and after Li penetrating through the Gr sheet or graphene/Si-substrate (Gr/Si) slab. The climbing image nudged elastic band (CI-NEB) method is performed to evaluate the diffusion barrier and seek the saddle point. The calculation results reveal that the d-Gr greatly reduces the energy barriers for Li diffusion in Gr or Gr/Si. The energy stability, structural configuration, bond length between the atoms and layer distances of these structures are also discussed in detail.

Abstract:Here we report a facile method to generate a high density of point defects in graphene on metal foil and show how the point defects affect the electronic structures of graphene layers. Our scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements, complemented by first principle calculations, reveal that the point defects result in both the intervalley and intravalley scattering of graphene. The Fermi velocity is reduced in the vicinity area of the defect due to the enhanced scattering. Additionally, our analysis further points out that periodic point defects can tailor the electronic properties of graphene by introducing a significant bandgap, which opens an avenue towards all-graphene electronics.

Abstract:Improving electrochemical activity of graphene is crucial for its various applications, which requires delicate control over its geometric and electronic structures. We demonstrate that precise control of the density of vacancy defects, introduced by Ar(+) irradiation, can improve and finely tune the heterogeneous electron transfer (HET) rate of graphene. For reliable comparisons, we made patterns with different defect densities on a same single layer graphene sheet, which allows us to correlate defect density (via Raman spectroscopy) with HET rate (via scanning electrochemical microscopy) of graphene quantitatively, under exactly the same experimental conditions. By balancing the defect induced increase of density of states (DOS) and decrease of conductivity, the optimal HET rate is attained at a moderate defect density, which is in a critical state; that is, the whole graphene sheet becomes electronically activated and, meanwhile, maintains structural integrity. The improved electrochemical activity can be understood by a high DOS near the Fermi level of defective graphene, as revealed by ab initio simulation, which enlarges the overlap between the electronic states of graphene and the redox couple. The results are valuable to promote the performance of graphene-based electrochemical devices. Furthermore, our findings may serve as a guide to tailor the structure and properties of graphene and other ultrathin two-dimensional materials through defect density engineering.
