Abstract:In this study, a newly developed high-strength cast Fe81Cr15V3C1 (wt%) steel with a high resistance against dry abrasion and chloride-induced pitting corrosion is presented. The alloy was synthesized through a special casting process that yielded high solidification rates. The resulting fine, multiphase microstructure is composed of martensite, retained austenite and a network of complex carbides. This led to a very high compressive strength (>3800 MPa) and tensile strength (>1200 MPa) in the as-cast state. Furthermore, a significantly higher abrasive wear resistance in comparison to the conventional X90CrMoV18 tool steel was determined for the novel alloy under very harsh wear conditions (SiC, α-Al2O3). Regarding the tooling application, corrosion tests were conducted in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Potentiodynamic polarization curves demonstrated a similar behavior during the long-term testing of Fe81Cr15V3C1 and the X90CrMoV18 reference tool steel, though both steels revealed a different nature of corrosion degradation. The novel steel is less susceptible to local degradation, especially pitting, due to the formation of several phases that led to the development of a less dangerous form of destruction: galvanic corrosion. In conclusion, this novel cast steel offers a cost- and resource-efficient alternative to conventionally wrought cold-work steels, which are usually required for high-performance tools under highly abrasive as well as corrosive conditions.

Abstract:In this work, the effect of N content on the corrosion resistance of high-nitrogen austenitic stainless steels for nonmagnetic drill collars in a harsh service environment was investigated by immersion tests in simulated service environment and XPS analysis. The number and morphology of corrosion pits on 0.63N, 0.79N and 0.83N steels were evaluated using the methods of probability and statistics. The composition of the passive films on 0.63N and 0.83N steels was analysed by XPS, and the mechanism of high N content improving corrosion resistance was discussed. The results show that increasing the N content not only reduced the number of pits but also greatly limited the growth of pit width and depth. In addition, it made pits more likely to appear as a relatively less harmful “shallow disk”. The XPS analysis results show that N increased the ratio of chromium oxides and iron oxides in the passive film and promoted the enrichment of CrN, which was beneficial to improving the stability and protection ability of the passive film. This work provides some experience and inspiration for the development of high-nitrogen austenitic stainless steel for nonmagnetic drill collars.

Abstract:Three HSS drills which were coated with TiN, TiAlN, TiCN coatings respectively were used to drill Austenitic stainless steel 1Cr18Ni9Ti, and the tool life and the wear mechanism of the coated drills were analyzed and compared. By comparison of the tool life, SEM of the coatings on the rake face of drills and variation of the elements of different spots on the rake face, the conclusions show that the TiCN coating is prior to TiAlN coating, and greatly prior to TiN coating in the cutting process of stainless steel with coolant, thus the TiCN coating would be more suitable for drilling of the stainless steel. The experimental results will be beneficial to the development and the selection of drills that are specialized for machining stainless steel, and to the enhancement of drilling effectiveness and efficience of stainless steel.

Abstract:High-nitrogen (N) austenitic stainless steel (Cr–Mn–N series) is commonly used for non-magnetic drill collars, which exhibits excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The effects of N content (0.63 to 0.86 wt.%) on the pitting corrosion behavior of the experimental non-magnetic drill collar steel were investigated using the electrochemical tests and immersion tests. Besides, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze the constitution of the passive film. The results show that with the enhancement of N content from 0.63 to 0.86 wt.%, the metastable pitting corrosion sensitivity of the tested materials in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution decreased and the pitting corrosion resistance increased. Meanwhile, the corrosion rate in 6 wt.% FeCl3 solution at 30 °C decreased from 10.40 to 4.93 mm/a. On the other hand, nitrogen was concentrated in the form of ammonia (NH4+ and NH3) on the outermost surface of the passive films. The contents of Cr2O3 and Fe2O3 raised in the passive films, together with the content of CrN, at metal/film interface increased as N content increased from 0.63 to 0.86 wt.%, which facilitated protective ability of the passive films, thus contributing to higher pitting corrosion resistance.

Abstract:Abstract Accurate measurement of cutting force is an important means to study metal cutting process. In this paper, the measurement of drilling force for stainless steel is studied by means of drilling experiments. It is found that the measured values of drilling force are dispersive under the same conditions. The uniformity of mechanical properties of workpiece materials has a great influence on the value of drilling force. In calculating cutting force by finite element method, it is necessary to ensure that the performance parameters of the input material are consistent with the actual performance parameters of the workpiece.
Corrosion Initiation and Propagation on Carburized Martensitic Stainless Steel Surfaces Studied via Advanced Scanning Probe Microscopy

Abstract:Historically, high carbon steels have been used in mechanical applications because their high surface hardness contributes to excellent wear performance. However, in aggressive environments, current bearing steels exhibit insufficient corrosion resistance. Martensitic stainless steels are attractive for bearing applications due to their high corrosion resistance and ability to be surface hardened via carburizing heat treatments. Here three different carburizing heat treatments were applied to UNS S42670: a high-temperature temper (HTT), a low-temperature temper (LTT), and carbo-nitriding (CN). Magnetic force microscopy showed differences in magnetic domains between the matrix and carbides, while scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM) revealed a 90⁻200 mV Volta potential difference between the two phases. Corrosion progression was monitored on the nanoscale via SKPFM and in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM), revealing different corrosion modes among heat treatments that predicted bulk corrosion behavior in electrochemical testing. HTT outperforms LTT and CN in wear testing and thus is recommended for non-corrosive aerospace applications, whereas CN is recommended for corrosion-prone applications as it exhibits exceptional corrosion resistance. The results reported here support the use of scanning probe microscopy for predicting bulk corrosion behavior by measuring nanoscale surface differences in properties between carbides and the surrounding matrix.

Abstract:In the present research work, mechanical aspect of transient state in drilling operation is investigated by analyzing together the cutting forces and the chip formation. Particularly, a sudden peak occurring on cutting forces during transient state is observed and deeply studied. To do so, new experimental methodologies to analyze local cutting forces when drilling heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel are introduced. The chisel edge and the cutting edge of each studied drill are numerically discretized as series of elementary cutting edges. Therefore, local cutting force evolution is correlated with the local cutting geometry variation along the cutting edge. On one hand, results have shown that for high ductile materials, local cutting geometry affects deeply not only the chip shape but also the chip flow direction. This strongly disrupts the monotony of the cutting forces evolution in transient state and lead to a sudden peak occurrence on cutting forces. On the other hand, linear local cutting forces could be determined by numerical decomposition of the global cutting forces measured during the drill tip engagement.

Abstract:Objectives: This article investigates the corrosion behavior and mechanical-property changes of S135, G105, and V150 drill pipe materials in a high-temperature-resistant, potassium amino poly-sulfonate drilling fluid, which has good lubrication performance and contains CO2/H2S, by applying an 80% yield-limit-load simulation. The results show that the CO2-corrosion behavior of G105, S135, and V150 drill pipes are obvious under the simulated constant-load-stress-corrosion environments at the wellhead, well-middle, and bottomhole positions. Compared to uncorroded drill pipes, S135 and V150 drill pipes have increased strength and yield ratios, decreased fracture elongation, and increased sensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement under H2S action, and V150 has a greater risk of stress-hydrogen embrittlement. The strength and yield ratios of G105-material drill pipes decrease, while the fracture elongation increases; the intensity-change amplitude levels are ranked V150 > G105 > S135, and the fracture-elongation-change amplitude is ranked G105 > S135 > V150. The tensile-performance-change amplitude and the SSCC (Sulfide-Stress-Corrosion Cracking) sensitivity of G105 and V150 drill pipes were the highest at the bottomhole. S135 drill pipe materials were most affected by pitting and tensile action at the wellhead, and they had the with the largest SSCC sensitivity.

Abstract:One completely new geometry and two modified chip breaker geometries were designed to increase the stability and reliability of the stainless steel dry drilling process. Experiments were performed and the results of individual tools were compared with a conventional solid carbide twist drill Gühring Ratio with a diameter of 5 mm. A matrix of three feed rates (0,03–0,07 mm/rev) and three cutting speeds (20–30 m/min) was designed for the cutting conditions. Precipitation-hardenable stainless steel 17-4 PH was chosen as a workpiece. During the experiment, the values of thrust force, spindle torque, temperature of the tool, surface roughness, chips morphology and chips division were recorded and compared with the reference tool. The results showed that compared to the reference tool A, the tool C - a multipoint drill with grooves through the cutting edge achieve approximately 4 % lower values of thrust force and 10–15 % lower values of spindle torque. Tool D with a step drill geometry achieve approximately 17 % lower values of thrust force and 10–15 % lower values of spindle torque and there is no chip clogging in the flute with C and D geometries. This effect is confirmed by the fact the spindle torque basically does not increase with the increasing depth of drilling. Tool B – new designed geometry achieve approximately 15 % lower values of thrust force and similar spindle torque values as the reference drill A. Tool temperature is a very important factor when dry drilling. Compared to the reference drill A, it was possible to achieve the tool temperature reduction of 20 % with the new geometry B, as well as with the multipoint drill C reduction by 26 % and with the step drill D reduction approximately by 30 %. All the modified drills also achieved a reduction in the surface roughness of the drilled holes. By 17 %, 35 % and 48 % lower surface roughness Ra was achieved with drills B, C and D. Chip morphology was significantly different for the tested drills. Conventional twist drills A and B generated helical short chips. While C and D twist drills with divided cutting edges generated ribbon snarled chips. Thanks to the reduction of cutting forces and temperature, it is possible to stably operate the drilling process with a higher cutting speed and feed rate, which leads to an increase in the efficiency and reliability of the machining process.

Stainless steels are used in components and equipment in the chemical and petrochemical industries (e.g., valves, plates, columns, capacitors and desalination units). Generally, the steels used in these applications have physical, mechanical and chemical properties that give them corrosion resistance. However, contaminants existing in the processed fluids are the main factor causing the increase in corrosion rate, leading to significant financial losses, which requires the development of innovative technologies to protect the metal from the action of aggressive environment. The paper presents two innovative surface protection techniques used to improve the corrosion resistance of stainless steels. Thus, Matrix-Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation (MAPLE) and Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) techniques are used to obtain deposition of hybrid nanostructures of binary oxides and porphyrins on W1.4034 martensitic stainless steel, according to EN 10083-3.

Abstract:In this paper, the influence of corrosive conditions on the mechanical performance of Flow Drill Screw (FDS) joints is investigated in greater detail. Different combinations of light metals such as aluminium or magnesium alloys and high strength/stainless steel served as the test material. The joint strength of FDS joints, under quasi-static and cyclic loading, was measured before and after six weeks’ of corrosion climate change testing. Furthermore metallographic sections of the samples were compared in order to evaluate the stage of surface, galvanic and crevice corrosion. To classify the effect of progressing corrosion on the mechanical properties of FDS joints, the following factors are taken into account: corrosion resistance of the materials, joining parameters and the geometry of the joint. For all material combinations there is an apparent change in both the fatigue strength and the failure behaviour after corrosion testing.

Abstract:This paper represents a new lubricant method which is able to one-stroke drill deep holes with a length-to-diameter of 8, on the AISI SUS 304 stainless steel. By adding graphene nanosheet into typical soluble emulsion and then mixing with water, a nano fluid can be made. The results revealed that using nanofluid can provide a reduction of 4.4-fold of the drilling torque, and thus expand the tool life as many as 20 times, compared with using typical emulsion lubricant. The proper set of cutting parameters was found by using Taguchi L9 experiments as 550 rpm spindle speed and 0.05 mm/rev. The results can be expanded to apply in other deep drilling of hard-to-cut material, using inexpensive devices and avoiding peck-drilling. The proposed lubricant can also be promissing for other machining operations.
Machining performance evaluation and tool wear analysis of dry cutting austenitic stainless steel with variable-length restricted contact tools

Abstract:Austenitic stainless steel during machining still faces several challenges in terms of poor machinability and severe tool wear. In this work, different rake surface restricted contact tools with an inconstant tool-chip contact length are designed and fabricated. An in-depth investigation is then performed to comprehend the influence of the variable-length restricted contact tools on the machining performance and tool wear during dry cutting of AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel. The results indicate that considerable improvements in tribological properties and tool life are achieved with the developed tools. The cutting force, cutting temperature, chip curl radius, and chip thickness decrease compared to traditional restricted contact tools. A dramatic reduction in flank wear of up to 44.18% is obtained in variable-length restricted contact tools compared with traditional restricted contact tools. Variable-length restricted contact structures also reduce the adhesion rate and abrasion damage of tool wear processes. The insights in this study exhibit an efficient method of dry machining stainless steel and may provide a basis for designing cutting tools for green machining of difficult-to-cut materials.

Abstract:In this work, the corrosion behavior of tempered AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel (MSS) was studied by in-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) in 0.1 M NaCl and correlated with the microstructure. Thermocalc simulation, dilatometry, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were performed to investigate phase transformation which showed the formation of M3C, M7C3, and M23C6 type of carbides and also retained austenite. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and AFM characterization revealed undissolved carbides and tempering carbides in the martensitic matrix. Volta potential mapping measured by scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM) indicated higher electrochemical (practical) nobility of the carbides with respect to the martensitic matrix whereas regions adjacent to carbides showed lower nobilities due to chromium depletion. Open circuit potential and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization measurements showed metastable corrosion activities associated with a weak passive behavior and a risk for localized corrosion along certain carbide boundaries. In-situ AFM measurements revealed selective dissolution of certain carbide interphases and martensitic inter-lath regions indicating higher propensity to localized corrosion.

Abstract:<p>Revealing the cavitation erosion initiation and propagation in super ferritic stainless steels is important both scientifically and commercially. The initial microstructure of a Cr30Mo2 steel was observed through electron backscatter diffraction. Specimens were cavitation erosion tested for 2–12 hours. The specimen surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and optical profilometry. Cavitation erosion damage initiated at persistent slip bands and pits in grains with low Taylor factors. Material removal propagated along {100} planes and could continue across grain boundaries lower than ∼30°. Grain boundaries with higher misorientation angles tend to retard cavitation erosion propagation. Finally, a mechanism was proposed for cavitation erosion in super ferritic stainless steel.</p>

Abstract:Ferritic stainless steels (FSS), which are potentially ferromagnetic, play a vital role in electromagnetic applications, including solenoid valves, owing to their ferromagnetic properties. This study delves into the microstructure's impact on the localized pitting corrosion behaviour of cold-drawn (CD) low-carbon medium-chromium ferritic/ferromagnetic EN1.4106. Employing potentiostatic-based corrosion analysis, mechanical assessments, and microstructural evaluations on 44 designated specimens subjected to varied annealing conditions, we unveil a nuanced correlation between corrosion resistance and microstructure. Lower reduction rate of 15% versus 45%, extended-enough annealing conditions, and meticulous microstructural control with average grain size of around 45–46 μm, particularly in minimizing dislocation density alongside the local misorientaion of 15° up to at most 35°, significantly enhance corrosion resistance. Overall, this FSS grade demonstrates commendable non-hardenable characteristics with moderate resistance to pitting corrosion in the two of the most corrosive (acidic and chlorinated) environments. The grade notably passivates in sulfuric acid electrolyte solution (SAES) but undergoes active anodic dissolution in sodium chloride electrolyte solution (SCES), ultimately forming a sort of passive-like oxide layer.

Abstract:This study explores the microstructure and corrosion resistance of dissimilar gas tungsten arc (GTA) welds between super duplex stainless steel (sDSS 2507) and nitronic steel (N50) using ER2594 and ER70S-2 filler metals. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was utilized for microstructural, compositional, and corroded surface analysis, including rust layer examination. Corrosion resistance was assessed through cyclic potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and continuous immersion in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Results indicate that ER2594 demonstrates superior resistance to pitting, which is attributed to a substantial difference in pitting resistance equivalent number. Pitting initiation on the N50/sDSS 2507 base metal side with ER70S2 filler suggests galvanic coupling-induced general corrosion. Weight-loss measurements indicate hindered oxygen diffusion during continuous immersion, controlled by the electrochemical activity of the inner rust layer. Electrochemical tests demonstrate an oxygen-dependent cathodic reduction process, while complete immersion corrosion produces primary corrosion products such as β-FeO(OH), Fe 3 O 4 , Fe 2 O 3 , and γ-FeO(OH). The corrosion model reveals an oxygen-absorbing mechanism with non-protective rust layers and O 2 diffusion control, emphasizing Cl − , O 2 , and rust layer interactions. This study highlights complex interactions between alloy composition, microstructure, and corrosion resistance to enhance performance, offering significant insights for tubing-couple assembly design in deep-water environments.

Abstract:Abstract Drilling into the solid material is one of the basic technological operations, which creates a cylindrical hole in an appropriate time with required quality. Drilling operation demands a favourable removal of chips from the cutting area because a creation of an undesirable shape of chips can impart a lower quality of the drilled hole corresponding with the generation of excess heat due to the intense contact of the chip with drill. The solution for a proper machining is a suitable modification of the drill geometry i.e., point and clearance angles as presented in current study. The tested drills are made of M35 high-speed steel characterized by a very thin core at the point of the drill. An interesting feature of the drills is the use of cutting speed higher than 30 m min −1 , with the feed of 0.2 mm per revolution. The surface roughness (Ra and Rz lower than 1 μm and 6 μm respectively), cylindricity (0.045 mm), roundness (0.025 mm), perpendicularity of the hole axis (0.025 mm), diameters and position of the individual holes were achieved for a drill with point angle 138.32°and clearance angle 6.92 respectively. The increase of the drill point angle by 6° resulted in the decrease in the feed force of more than 150 N. In addition, an increase of the clearance angle by 1° resulted with a decrease in the feed force of 70 N. The results of the experiment showed that with the correct geometry of the tool the effective machining without using internal cooling can be realised.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The corrosion behavior of 3Cr steel and HP-13Cr stainless steel (SS) under high temperature and CO2 or H2S pressure environments was investigated by immersion tests and multiple characterizations of corrosion films, and analyzed by combining the Pourbaix diagram and kinetic calculations. At 180 °C/3.8 MPa CO2, both 3Cr steel and HP-13Cr SS exhibited double-layered corrosion films, comprising a crystalline FeCO3 outer layer and an inner Cr2O3 and Cr(OH)3 layer. Furthermore, at 180 °C/3.8 MPa H2S, the corrosion films of both steels consist of an outer crystalline pyrrhotite and pyrite layer and an inner Cr2O3 and Cr(OH)3 layer. The corrosion resistance of 3Cr in H2S is inferior to that of HP-13Cr SS due to the influence of stress corrosion cracking but is close to that of HP-13Cr SS in CO2. Therefore, 3Cr steel could be considered a cost-effective alternative to HP-13Cr SS in CO2 environments.
