Abstract:The effects of TiO2 on crystallization, microstructure, thermal, and dielectric properties of MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 (MAS) glass-ceramics were investigated. The results showed that with the TiO2 content increasing, the glass transition temperature (Tg) increased gradually, while the onset of crystallization temperature (Tx) and crystallization peak temperature (Tp) increased firstly and then decreased. The main crystalline phase for all the samples was μ-cordierite. β-Quartz and α-cordierite precipitated as the minor crystalline phases with TiO2 content ≥ 2 mol%. A small amount of TiO2 could promote the sintering process and improve the dielectric properties of MAS glass-ceramics. However, an excess of TiO2 addition could worsen the sintering and dielectric properties. The addition of TiO2 was beneficial to decrease the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). The MAS glass-ceramics doped with 2 mol% TiO2 heated at 925 °C showed excellent properties: high density (2.64 g/cm3), low CTE value (3.34 × 10–6/°C), low dielectric constant (5.44), and dielectric loss (2.17 × 10–3) at 1 MHz, which was a promising material for LTCC applications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: how to optimize the crystallization, sintering properties, microstructure, and thermal and electrical properties of MgO - Al₂O₃ - SiO₂ (MAS) glass - ceramics by adding different amounts of TiO₂ to meet the requirements of low - temperature co - fired ceramic (LTCC) materials. Specifically, this research mainly focuses on the following points: 1. **Reducing the sintering temperature**: The sintering temperature of α - cristobalite - based glass - ceramics is relatively high (> 1350°C), which does not meet the requirements of LTCC materials (< 1000°C). Therefore, the research aims to reduce the sintering temperature by adding TiO₂. 2. **Improving electrical properties**: The influence of TiO₂ on the dielectric constant and dielectric loss of MAS glass - ceramics was studied, in order to obtain materials with low dielectric constant and low dielectric loss, so as to be suitable for high - frequency wireless communication and computer fields. 3. **Optimizing the coefficient of thermal expansion**: By adding TiO₂, the research hopes to reduce the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of MAS glass - ceramics, making it closer to the coefficient of thermal expansion of silicon (3.1 × 10⁻⁶/°C), so as to improve its application potential in multi - layer LTCC substrates. 4. **Increasing density and reducing porosity**: The influence of TiO₂ on the density and shrinkage rate of MAS glass - ceramics was studied, in order to obtain materials with high density and low porosity, thereby improving their mechanical strength and reliability. ### Main conclusions - Adding an appropriate amount of TiO₂ (2 mol%) can significantly improve the performance of MAS glass - ceramics: - The **glass transition temperature (Tg)** gradually increases, while the crystallization onset temperature (Tx) and the crystallization peak temperature (Tp) first increase and then decrease. - The main crystal phase is μ - cristobalite, and when the TiO₂ content is ≥ 2 mol%, β - quartz and α - cristobalite are precipitated as secondary crystal phases. - The **density** and **shrinkage rate** first increase and then decrease with the increase of TiO₂ content, reaching the maximum value at 2 mol% TiO₂. - The **dielectric constant** gradually decreases from 6.3 to 5.0, and the **dielectric loss** first decreases and then increases, reaching the minimum value of 2.17 × 10⁻³ at 2 mol% TiO₂. - The **coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE)** gradually decreases with the increase of TiO₂ content. When the TiO₂ content is 2 - 3 mol%, the CTE is approximately 3.3 × 10⁻⁶/°C, which is close to the CTE of silicon. In conclusion, MAS glass - ceramics with 2 mol% TiO₂ added and sintered at 925°C exhibit excellent properties: high density (2.64 g/cm³), low CTE (3.34 × 10⁻⁶/°C), low dielectric constant (5.44), and low dielectric loss (2.17 × 10⁻³), and it is a material with potential application in LTCC.
