Abstract:Phosphogypsum (PG) as a low-cost calcium resource was used to prepare nano-CaCO3 in a three-phase system by reactions. Based on the population balance equation, nano-CaCO3 crystal nucleation and growth model in the gas (CO2)-liquid (NH3 H2O)-solid (CaSO4) three-phase system was established. The crystallization kinetic model of nano-CaCO3 in CO2-NH3.H2O-CaSO4 reactions system was experimental developed over an optimized temperature range of 20-40 degrees C and CO2 flow rate range of 138251 ml/min as rCacO(3) = K-n 32 pi M-2 gamma(3) /3R(3)rho T-2(3 )(C - C*)(0.8 )/[ln(C/C*)](3 )+pi rho/3MK(g)(3)K(n) (C-C*)(2)t(3), where nano-CaCO3 nucleation rate constant was k(n) = 6.24 x 10(19) exp (-15940/RT) and nano-CaCO3 growth rate constant was k(g) = 0.79 exp (-47650/RT) respectively. Research indicated that nucleation rates and growth rates both increased with the increasing of temperature and CO32- ion concentration. And crystal growth was dependent on temperature more than that of nucleation process because the activation energy of CaCO3 growth was bigger than that of CaCO3 nucleation. Decreasing the reaction temperature and CO2 flow rate was more beneficial for producing nano-size CaCO3 because of the lower CaCO3 growth rates. The deduced kinetic equation could briefly predict the average particle sizes of nano-CaCO3. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Optimization of Calcium Carbide Residue Utilization for Producing High‐quality Calcium Carbonate

Abstract:In light of the current situation where the utilization of calcium carbide slag yields low profits but holds significant potential for reducing carbon emissions, ammonium acetate was employed to leach calcium carbide slag. It also played a crucial role in regulating the products of indirect carbon dioxide carbonation when mixed with glycine and lye. Ammonium acetate's significance underscores its dual role in both the leaching and carbonation processes. This process yielded calcium carbonate with particle sizes smaller than 100 nm, with a purity of 98% and a single vaterite phase. The calcium carbide residue demonstrated an impressive CO2 uptake rate of 23.5%. Ammonium acetate exhibited an efficiency of 79.2% as a leaching agent. The ammonium acetate method demonstrated enhanced environmental friendliness and facilitated a more efficient carbon uptake rate of 23.5% compared to conventional indirect methods. Furthermore, the addition of lye, glycine, and ammonium acetate effectively extended the nucleation time of the calcium carbonate crystals and induced the formation of more vaterite intermediates with smaller particle sizes. The influence mechanism of compound additives on the carbonation reaction was revealed through kinetic analysis and molecular dynamics. This innovative approach offers a promising avenue for simultaneously treating solid waste and reducing CO2 emission. (c) 2023 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Effect of pH and temperatures on the fast precipitation vaterite particle size and polymorph stability without additives by steamed ammonia liquid waste

Abstract:This paper reports on the effect of pH and temperature on size and polymorph stability of calcium carbonate (vaterite) formed without use of additives by Steamed ammonia liquid waste. The effect of the reaction temperature (20–80 °C), the initial Steamed ammonia liquid waste pH (1.5–12.1) and the stirring speed (800 and 1200 rpm/min) on the preparation of CaCO3 with respect to the particle size and polymorph stability of final product were investigated. The obtained different CaCO3 size and polymorphs were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a Laser particle size analyzer (LPSA). The phase of vaterite transformed to calcite with increasing temperature 20 to 80 °C. The SEM and LPSA show that the CaCO3 particle size increased from nano to several micron with the increase of temperature. When the initial CaCl2 aqueous solution in low pH (1.5 and 2.6), nano-micro porous spherical vaterite can be obtained. When the initial CaCl2 aqueous solution in high pH (11.7 and 12.1), preparation of CaCO3 is mainly for the vaterite contains a small amount of calcite and the size particle increased. The possible mechanisms for the porous vaterite CaCO3 formation have also been discussed. Since requirements for the physical properties of CaCO3 particles are diverse for industrial and medical applications, it is important to understand CaCO3 crystallization behavior for tailored particle synthesis.

Abstract:In the salt lake industry, large amounts of steamed ammonia liquid waste are discharged as byproducts. The conversion of the residues into high value-added vaterite-phase calcium carbonate products for industrial applications is highly desirable. In this research, the feasibility of preparing vaterite-phase CaCO3 in different CaCl2-CO2-MOH-H2O systems using steamed ammonia liquid waste was studied in the absence of additives. The effects of initial CaCl2 concentration, stirring speed and CO2 flow rate on the composition of the CaCO3 crystal phase were investigated. The contents of vaterite were researched by the use of steamed ammonia liquid waste as a calcium source and pure calcium chloride as a contrast. The influence of the concentration of CNH3·H2O/CCa2+ on the carbonation ratio and crystal phase composition was studied. The reaction conditions on the content, particle size and morphology of vaterite influence were discussed. It was observed that single vaterite-phase CaCO3 was favored in the CaCl2-CO2-NH4OH-H2O system. Additionally, the impurity ions in steamed ammonia liquid waste play a key role in the nucleation and crystallization of vaterite, which could affect the formation of single-phase vaterite. The obtained results provided a novel method for the preparation of single vaterite particles with the utilization of CO2 and offered a selective method for the extensive utilization of steamed ammonia liquid waste.

Abstract:Through the analysis of phase and Mg content variation of samples obtained from different reaction system, we propose that the crystallization of calcium carbonate was mainly the aggregation-mediated process in the ethanol-water mixed solution and the solution-mediated process only in aqueous solution. Solvation of CO32- had obvious influence on the deposition of calcium carbonate. According to XRD and IR of deposits, it was considered that mixed phases of Mg calcite and a transitional phase which bears analogy to dolomite structure were formed. That is to say, magnesium calcite obtained from the mixed solution of ethanol-water demonstrated the dolomitization tendency.

Abstract:Amine CO2 capture is an effective post-combustion carbon capture (PCC) technology, while CO2 mineral carbonation is a safe and stable method for CO2 storage. In this paper, these two methods were combined, and the CO2 absorption-mineralization performance of mixed amine solution coupled with CaO under different ratios of mixed amine solution, temperature, reaction time and CaO addition ratio were studied by using MEA/MDEA mixed amine solution as the CO2 absorbent and using CaO as the CO2 mineralizing raw material. The results show that CaO could effectively mineralize the CO2 absorbed in MEA/MDEA solution, realizing the regeneration of MEA/MDEA solution simultaneously under normal temperature and pressure. Meanwhile, the MEA/MDEA solution can still maintain a high CO2 conversion rate (77.4%) and CO2 cycle loading (1.03 mol/L) after five cycles of absorption-mineralization experiments. The FT-IR and XRD analyses reveal that the addition of CaO makes a large amount of Ca2+ and OH− into the MEA/MDEA solution, which could react with and protonated amine in the solution to form calcium carbonate precipitate and free amine respectively, thus realizing the mineralization of CO2 and the regeneration of MEA/MDEA solution. The main component of solid products obtained is calcium carbonate, and calcite is its main crystal form.

Abstract:The distillation waste stream from the ammonia-alkali process contains 90–120 g/L of calcium chloride. Using calcium chloride as raw material to mineralize carbon dioxide can achieve efficient utilization of calcium chloride waste and CO 2 emission reduction. This article is based on a two-step synthesis method, using ammonium carbonate and calcium chloride as raw materials to synthesize calcium carbonate. The changes in pH of the mineralized solution with time were investigated under factors such as temperature, ammonium carbonate concentration, feeding method, and retention time. The crystallization mechanism of carbonation process shows that the pH of solution will affect the degree of supersaturation of calcium carbonate, and high supersaturation is conducive to the precipitation of metastable aragonite and vaterite phases. The experimental results showed that when ammonium carbonate was passed into calcium chloride at a rate of 10 mL/min at different temperatures and different ammonium carbonate concentrations, the pH change of the mineralized solution could be divided into three stages: a rapid pH decrease stage (9.5–7), a pH stabilization stage (∼7) and a pH rebound stage (7–8.5). Increasing the temperature is conducive to the formation of submicron calcite type calcium carbonate, changing the concentration of ammonium carbonate, and the crystal phase and size of the product are almost unaffected. If calcium chloride is added to ammonium carbonate, under low calcium ion concentration conditions, calcium carbonate tends to form aragonite phase.

Abstract:A modified carbonation process for the synthesis of super-fine calcium carbonate particles from Ca(OH)2 slurry at room temperature using a CO2–air gas mixture was investigated. The adaptation of a radial-shaped sparger and the addition of chemicals such as ZnCl2 and EDTA accelerated the carbonation process, thus reducing the diameter of the precipitated calcium carbonate particles. Thermodynamic calculation results showed that the role of EDTA in the carbonation process was mainly through the complex interaction between EDTA and Ca2+.

Abstract:In response of the problems such as ammonia escape, high regenerated energy, low absorbed rate in the late stage which exists in the research of carbon capture by ammonia now, this paper presents a kind of reinforced crystallization technologies based on the way of antisolvent crystallization. Reinforcing the aqueous ammonia of low carbonized degree crystallization can make the average absorbed rate maintain at a high level and regeneration by desorbing crystal product can save the regeneration energy, what’ s more, the ammonia of low concentration can be chosen as absorbent which can solve the ammonia escape problem at some extent. The bubbling reactor is adopt to do the fundamental research, the effect of different experimental condition on the constituent of carbonized ammonia and the effect of different carbonized ammonia constituents on the crystallization process are analyzed. The experimental conditions of absorption temperature of 20℃, flow rate of 2 L/min, CO2 volume fraction of 28% and aqueous ammonia mass concentration of 10% benefit the crystallization process.

Abstract:The calcined kaolin in Shanxi was used as raw material to synthesize nano-scale NaX molecular sieve in one ton-reaction vessel by direct hydrothermal method without template,seed,directed agents or any additives.The effects of alkalinity,temperature and reaction time on crystallization behavior of NaX nano-molecular sieve were explored in the pilot phase by XRD experiment.The process and products in the pilot-scale were characterized by TEM and IR.The results indicated that the suitable mole composition of one ton-reaction vessel was n(Na2O)/n(SiO2)= 1.5 and the best crystallizing time was 4 h,at 100 ℃.The products were nano-NaX molecular sieve with uniform size distribution in nano-scale and complete crystal form,also match the standard X.
Influence of Calcium on Struvite Crystallization

Abstract:Struvite recovery has drawn great interest in recent years because of the phosphorus recovery potential. This technique does not currently have many applications because of the variation in product purity. Foreign ions in the wastewater are one of the major factors that interfere in the crystallization process and reduce the purity of the product. For example, a high calcium concentration can affect the quality of the recovered struvite, and even hinder the marketization of this technique. This paper investigates the effect of calcium concentration on struvite crystallization. The product purity was calculated using nitrogen in the precipitate as a reference element. The particle size and surface morphology were characterized using laser diffraction and SEM-EDS analysis. XRD was used to investigate the structure of the precipitate. The results confirm that calcium negatively impacts the crystallization of struvite by competing for the pool of magnesium ions in solution or by adsorption to the surface of the struvite precipitate. However, it was also found that a high ammonia concentration can be used to reduce this effect, which is worthwhile investigating for the development of this technique.

Abstract:The growth regularity of gypsum(CaSO4·2H2O) crystal under condition of wet flue gas desulphurization(WFGD) and the affecting factors upon crystallization of CaSO4·2H2O have been studied.The study shows that the induced time of CaSO4·2H2O crystallization is gradually shortened as the reaction temperature raises.The metallic impurities,such as ions of Fe,Mg,and Al,affect the state of CaSo4·2H2O crystal,decreasing the dewaterability of CaSO4·2H2O,the sequence of inhibiting ability to crystallization by similar mole concentration of metallic impurities is as follows:Al3+>Fe3+>Mg2+;the influence of Mg2+ upon the inducel time is basically negligble.
Studies on the crystallization of nano calcium carbonate in the reaction system Ca(OH)2-H2O-CO2

Abstract:The synthesis of nanoparticles of calcium carbonate in the reaction system Ca(OH)2-H2O-CO2 was measured in situ by using conductivity gauge and pH meter, with the lime suspension mass fraction of 2% to approximately 10% and temperature of 12 to approximately 30 °C. At the temperature of 16 to approximately 25 °C, the carbonation rate is controlled by the absorption of CO2 at the initial period and finally it turns to be controlled by dissolution of Ca(OH)2. At the temperature of 12 °C, different from that of the higher temperature, the carbonation rate is controlled by dissolution of Ca(OH)2 during the first declining and regressing stage of conductivity curve. The particle size of the product is increased with the increase of the temperature and mass fraction of the Ca(OH)2 suspension, and the nanoparticles of CaCO3 is produced at the temperature of 12 to approximately 25 °C and with the lime suspension mass fraction of 2% to approximately 8%. A certain relationship between the first surge of conductivity curve and the particle size of the product was found, the bigger the first surge, the smaller the particle size.

Abstract:The effects of ultrasonic and Baumé degree of Ca(OH)2 suspension on the size of nano-CaCO3 prepared by carbonization were studied. The results indicated that ultrasonic could improve the dispersibility of powder, reduce the aggregation and decrease the particle size of nanometer calcium carbonate. The fine particles synthesized at 40 kHz were smaller but rougher than that obtained at 20 kHz. The frequency hardly influenced the morphology of nanometer calcium carbonate. Moreover, the lower Baumé degree of Ca(OH)2 suspension was adopted, the smaller the size of nano-CaCO3 were obtained. And in the process of carbonation, we were using SEM and XRD to study the nucleation and growth mechanism, it indicated that amorphous calcium carbonate particles acted as nuclei in the initial stage oriented absorption calcium hydroxide to form wirelike substances. In the end, these botryoidal shape crystals were disaggregated into calcium carbonate with the particle diameters of 30nm.
Impacts of Two Alkanolamines on Crystallization and Morphology of Calcium Hydroxide

Abstract:As one of the main hydration products, Ca(OH)(2) has important effects on mechanical properties and durability of hardened cementitious materials. In this study, Ca(OH)(2) precipitates were synthesized by continuous feeding of CaCl2 and NaOH solutions into a bulk solution containing triethanolamine (TEA) or diethanolamine (DEA). Analytical techniques including electric conductivity measurement, TOC, ICP - OES, XRD, FTIR and SEM were employed to investigate the impacts of the alkanolamines on the precipitation process and morphology of the synthetic Ca(OH)(2). Results show that TEA strongly hinders the nucleation and growth of Ca(OH)(2) precipitate due to the complexation effect with Ca2+ ions in solution. The chemical incorporation of TEA into the lattice structure greatly disrupts lattice structure of the obtained Ca(OH)(2) precipitates and alters the morphology from typical hexagonal prism of pure portlandite to vertically stacked or randomly agglomerated Ca(OH)(2) lamellae crystals with much smaller size. In contrast, DEA exhibits little effect on the precipitation process and morphology of portlandite.
Influence of Organic Matter on Calcium Carbonate Scaling During Evaporation Crystallization Treatment Process of High Salinity Organic Wastewater

Abstract:A key part of evaporation treatment of high salinity organic wastewater is to control evaporative scaling, but the effect of organic matter on calcium carbonate scaling is not clear.This paper selects three typical organic compounds, i.e.,bovine serum albumin, sodium alginate, and humic acid, and simulates calcium carbonate scaling procedure to explore the effect of organic matter on calcium carbonate scaling during evaporation crystallization treatment process of high salinity organic wastewater.The results are as follows: in terms of scaling rate, bovine serum albumin almost has no effect on the scaling rate of calcium carbonate, while sodium alginate and humic acid both have inhibitory effects on calcium carbonate scaling; the effect of different concentrations of organic matter and reaction time on scaling is quite different; all three typical organic compounds can change the crystal form and morphology of calcium carbonate; bovine serum albumin has a greater effect on morphology and structure under high concentration conditions, while sodium alginate has a relatively unstable effect on calcium carbonate crystal form, and the morphology of calcium carbonate can be greatly influenced by humic acid, but its crystal form can only be changed after a long time of reaction.By analyzing the effect of different types of organics, we can optimize the process parameters accordingly to slow down the scaling phenomenon in the evaporation crystallization process.
Influence of Natural and Synthetic Additives on Calcium Carbonate Precipitation and Crystal Morphology

Abstract:Abstract The pH-stat technique has been used to study the influence of several natural and synthetic additives containing carboxyl, phenolic, and sulfonic groups on the precipitation of calcium carbonate from supersaturated solutions (Ca=HCO 3 = 5.50 mM, NaCl=0.10 M, pH 8.50, 35°C). The additives investigated were natural i.e., green tea extract, GTE; sodium lignosulfonate, SLS and synthetic i.e., poly(acrylic acid), P-AA; poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propane sulfonic acid), P-SA. It has been found that addition of low concentrations of additive has three fold effects: a) it delays the precipitation of calcium carbonate, b) it inhibits the rate of precipitation, and c) it influences the calcium carbonate polymorph. Based on the results obtained under the test conditions, the ranking in terms of decreasing effectiveness is: P-AA ≫ GTE>SLS ∼ P-SA. The results also indicate that the delay in precipitation increases with increasing additive concentration. SEM and X-ray diffraction studies of calcium carbonate precipitated in the presence of additives reveal that whereas P-AA and P-SA favor the formation of vaterite, GTE and SLS influence the formation of calcite. By contrast, the predominant polymorph formed in the absence of additive is vaterite. Kinetic analysis suggests Langmuir-type adsorption of added additive ions on the active growth sites of CaCO 3 crystals.

Investigation of the mechanism of CaCO3 crystallization controlled by polymer lattices P(St-co-MAA)

Abstract:In this paper, polymer latices P(St-co-MAA) were used to control the crystallization of CaCO3, and the influence of the lattices on the crystallization, habit and morphology was studied by combination of XRD, FTIR and SEM. The mechanism of the morphology transformation of CaCO3 from calcite to vaterite with the increase of polar group content in latex was investigated. The concentrating effect of calcium ions on the latex surface inhibited the transformation from vaterite to calcite.
Experimental Investigation of Pore Structure During High Sodium Coal Ash Sintering with and Without Calcium Oxide Additive Through XCT Technology

Abstract:This article investigates the evolution of morphology and pore structure during sintering at 1200 degrees C for a high sodium coal ash, with and without using a calcium oxide additive. The effect of different proportions of calcium oxide additive was studied. The ratios of height and area of samples were calculated, and representative sintering time points of morphological changes were captured. Meanwhile, frequencies of diameter, pore numbers, and porosities were obtained by processing images. The maximum ratio of height and area reached at 15 min, 4 min, and 10 min for the sintering process of coal ash sample without additive, with 5% and 10% CaO, proving that CaO accelerates the sintering process. In comparison, the maximum porosities were 52.4%, 39.5%, and 47.0% for sintering samples after 10 min, 6 min, and 40 min. Besides, X-ray diffraction analysis of the minerals of the condensed white matter was conducted.
