Abstract:This paper describes the development and validation of a new procedure for the determination of phthalates in marine invertebrates, based on biocompatible solid-phase microextraction (BioSPME) followed by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The importance of this application relies on the current use of marine organisms as bioindicators for microplastic contamination through the detection of phthalates in their tissues. Challenges originate from the availability and/or possible restriction on the use of the biological materials, the need for user- friendly procedures for simplifying and speeding up operations in the marine environments, and the ubiquitous presence of phthalates in the laboratory environments that may cause background contamination. BioSPME served as an effective solution to all these issues, owing to the extreme minimization of the sample manipulation. Sampling operations were limited to the direct transfer of small amounts of the biological materials (150 mg) inside glass vials capped with aluminium lids; extractions were carried out by ultrasonication in acetone followed by dilution in ultrapure water and BioSPME clean-up; Electrospray (ESI) LC-MS/MS was employed for the final analytical determinations on the purified extracts. Tests were carried out on samples belonging to three different phyla, namely Cnidaria, Porifera, and Mollusca obtained from Maldivian coral reef environments and used for a current microplastic contamination biomonitoring project. Overall, very good sensitivity and repeatability, with negligible back contamination of the blanks were observed. The limits of detections were between 0.2 and 2.1 ng/g and precision, calculated as relative standard deviation (RSD), was below 14% for all the tested phthalates.
Application of non-lethal bioSPME-LC-MS/MS for the detection of human pharmaceuticals in soft corals: A survey at the North Nilandhe atoll (Maldives)

Abstract:At present the information regarding the occurrence of human pharmaceuticals (PhaCs) in coral reefs and their potential impacts on the associated fauna is limited. To optimize the collection of data in these delicate environments, we employed a solid-phase microextraction (bioSPME) and liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) procedure that enabled in vivo determinations in soft corals. Specifically, we researched the antibiotics Ofloxacin Sulfamethoxazole and Clarithromycin, the anti-inflammatory Diclofenac Propyphenazone Ketoprofen and Amisulpride, the neuroactive compounds Gabapentin-lactam, the beta-blocker Metoprolol and the antiepileptic Carbamazepine. Reproducibility was between 2.1% and 9.9% and method detection limits LODs) were between 0.2 and 1.6 ng/g and LOQs between 0.8 and 5.4 mg/g. The method was then applied to establish a baseline for the occurrence of these compounds in the Maldivian archipelago. Colonies of Sarcophyton sp. and Sinularia sp. were sampled along an inner-outer reef transect. Five of the ten targeted PhaCs were identified, and 40% of the surveyed coral colonies showed the occurrence of at least one of the selected compounds. The highest concentrations were found inside the atoll rim. Oxoflacin (9.5 ± 3.9 ng/g) and Ketoprofen (4.5 ± 2.3 ng/g) were the compounds with the highest average concentrations. Outside the atoll rim, only one sample showed contamination levels above the detection limit. No significant differences were highlighted among the two surveyed soft coral species, both in terms of average concentrations and bioconcentration factors (BCFs).

Abstract:The characterisation of microplastics is still a challenge, particularly when the sample is a mixture with a complex background, such as an ink mark on paper. To address this challenge, we developed and compared two approaches, (i) Raman imaging, combined with logic-based and principal component analysis (PCA)-based algorithms, and (ii) matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation-mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). We found that, accordingly, (i) if the Raman signal of plastics is identifiable and not completely shielded by the background, Raman imaging can extract the plastic signals and visualise their distribution directly, with the help of a logic-based or PCA-based algorithm, via the "fingerprint" spectrum; (ii) when the Raman signal is shielded and masked by the background, MALDI-MS can effectively capture and identify the plastic polymer, via the "barcode" of the mass spectrum linked with the monomer. Overall, both Raman imaging and MALDI-MS have benefits and limitations for microplastic analysis; if accessible, the combined use of these two techniques is generally recommended, especially when assessing samples with strong background interference.

Abstract:Abstract Plastic particulates in the environment pose an increasing concern for regulatory bodies due to their potential risk to higher organisms (including humans) as they enter the food chain. Nanoplastics (defined here as smaller than 1 μm) are particularly challenging to detect and analyze at environmentally relevant concentrations and in biological matrices. The tunicate Ciona Robusta is an effective bioindicator for microplastics and nanoplastic contamination in the marine environment, due to its capacity to filter substantial volumes of water and to accumulate particulates. In this proof-of-principle study that demonstrates a complete methodology, following controlled exposure using spiked samples of a model nanoplastic (100 nm diameter polystyrene spheres) the nanoparticles were separated from an enzymatically digested biological matrix, purified and concentrated for analysis. The described method yields an approximate value for nanoplastic concentration in the organism (with a limit of detection of 10 6 particles/organism, corresponding to 1 ng/g) and provides the chemical composition by Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, this method can be extended to other biological matrices and used to quantitatively monitor the accumulation of nanoplastics in the environment and food chain.

Abstract:Microplastic contamination is a growing marine environmental issue with possible consequences for seafood safety. Filter feeders are the target species for microplastic (MPs) pollution because they filter large quantities of seawater to feed. In the present study, an experimental contamination of Mytilus galloprovincialis was conducted using a mixture of the main types of MPs usually present in the seawater column (53% filaments, 30% fragments, 3% granules) in order to test the purification process as a potential method for removing these contaminants from bivalves intended for human consumption. A set of molecular biomarkers was also evaluated in order to detect any variations in the expression levels of some genes associated with biotransformation and detoxification, DNA repair, cellular response, and the immune system. Abstract:Chemical pollution is a threat to coral reefs. To preserve them, it is crucial to monitor novel contaminants and assess the related risks. The occurrence of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in coral reefs has been poorly investigated until now. Under this light, we tested the use of the marine sponge Cf. Hyrtios as bio-monitors and conducted a pilot study in the Faafu Atoll (Maldives). Analyses were carried out by in vivo solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and liquid chromatography (LC) electrospray ionization (ESI) tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). Twelve APIs were selected for method optimization. Limits of quantitation (LOQs) were in the 0.6 and 2.5 ng/g range, accuracy between 86.5 % and 104.7 %, and precision between 3.0 % and 14.9 %. All the sponges located in the inner reefs resulted contaminated with at least one API. Gabapentin and Carbamazepine displayed the highest detection rates, while Ketoprofen had the highest concentration (up to 15.7 ng/g).

Abstract:Microplastics (MP; 1 µm-5 mm) and microfibers (MF; thin, elongated particles with a high-length-to-width ratio) have become a major global environmental issue due to their ubiquity in the oceans and possess complex physicochemical properties that vary their mobility, bioavailability, and toxicity toward organisms and interactions with their surrounding pollutants. Nonetheless, a reliable methodology that would facilitate and automate the monitoring of MP is still lacking. Intending to select practical and standardized methods and considering the challenges in MPs detection, a new analysis protocol based on optical microscopy for the counting and morphological analysis of the particles has been developed. This method overcomes some issues related to the lack of practicality and standardization of the others currently applied, and does not involve sieving, washing, heating, or density separation and digestion processes. Our method is green and requires a minimum quantity of sediment, i.e., 1.5 g, and shortened timeframes. Future research efforts may need to develop and implement new analytical tools and combinations of technologies to complement respective detection limitations and yield reliable characterization of both MFs and MPs. We tested our protocol to study, for the first time, both marine and land sediment in the Vesuvian area of the Gulf of Naples (Italy).
Assessing Microplastics and Nanoparticles in the Surface Seawater of Venice Lagoon-Part I: Methodology of Research

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) both represent significant concerns in environmental sciences. This paper aims to develop a convenient and efficient methodology for the detection and measurement of MPs and nanoparticles from surface seawater and to apply it to the water samples collected from the UNESCO site of Venice and its lagoon, more precisely in the Venice-Lido Port Inlet, Grand Canal under Rialto Bridge, and Saint Marc basin. In this study, MPs were analyzed through optical microscopy for their relative abundance and characterized based on their color, shape, and size classes, while the concentration and the mean of nanoparticles were estimated via the Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis technique. Bulk seawater sampling, combined with filtration through a cascade of stainless-steel sieves and subsequent digestion, facilitates the detection of MPs of relatively small sizes (size classes distribution: >1 mm, 1000-250 μm, 250-125 μm, 125-90 μm, and 90-32 μm), similar to the size of MPs ingested by marine invertebrates and fishes. A protocol for minimizing interference from non-plastic nanoparticles through evaporation, digestion, and filtration processes was proposed to enrich the sample for NPs. The findings contribute to the understanding of the extent and characteristics of MPs and nanoparticle pollution in the Venice Lagoon seawater, highlighting the potential environmental risks associated with these pollutants and the need for coordinated approaches to mitigate them. Abstract:This paper examines the distribution and chemical properties of beached plastic pellets along the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts of Southern Italy. Three locations have been sampled: Agnone Bagni (SR) and Paradiso (ME) on the Ionian coast of Sicily, Baia del Tono in Milazzo (ME) on the Sicilian Tyrrhenian coast, and Pizzo Calabro (VV) in Calabria on the Tyrrhenian coast. Variations in shape, size, compactness, color, and other physical features, correlated with residence times and transport, has been highlighted. Raman spectroscopy, used in a portable configuration, enabled rapid identification of polymer types, demonstrating its utility for on-site plastic pollutant monitoring. Polyethylene and polypropylene were the predominant polymers. Principal component analysis of the spectra determined the optimal chemometric classification of pellets by composition, avoiding interference or distortion. In conclusion, the study provided preliminary insights into pellet abundance, composition, weathering extent, and distribution across these shorelines, underscoring the importance of regular beach monitoring.

Bioindicator species of plastic toxicity in tropical environments

Abstract:In French Polynesia, pearl farming represents the second economic resource of the country. The distinctive black pearls produced there are globally recognized and appreciated. However, pearl farms extensively use submerged plastic materials. Through gas chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry detection (GC/MSMS) analysis, we were able to identify various POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) and additives released after 24 h of leaching into seawater from these "pearl plastics" composed of PE (Polyethylene) and PP (Polypropylene). Subsequently, we tested different concentrations of this plastic leachate on five tropical species commonly raised in the pearl and aquaculture sector in Polynesia: Pinctada margaritifera, Saccostrea cucullata, Holothuria whitmaei, Litopenaeus stylirostris, and Tripneustes gratilla. Monitoring the embryo-larval development of these organisms allowed us to establish a correlation between the decrease in the percentage of normal larvae and the plastic concentration. Through the use of regression models, the EC50 (Effective Concentration) of the plastic leachate for each species was determined, and demonstrated to range from 6.6 to 71.5 g/L, depending on the species. The most sensitive species was the black teatfish Holothuria whitmaei, a tropical sea cucumber used for the first time for ecotoxicological tests. The sensitivity of this species, its large distribution in tropical areas, and the various advantages presented by its cultivation make it an interesting bio-indicator species for monitoring plastic pollution in tropical lagoons.
Microplastic in wild populations of the omnivorous crab Carcinus aestuarii: A review and a regional-scale test of extraction methods, including microfibres

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) has become ubiquitous in the marine environment. Its threat to marine organisms has been demonstrated under laboratory conditions, yet studies on wild populations still face methodological difficulties. We reviewed the methods used to separate MP from soft animal tissues and highlighted a lack of standardised methodologies, particularly critical for synthetic microfibres. We further compared enzymatic and a potassium hydroxide (KOH)-based alkaline digestion protocols on wild crabs (Carcinus aestuarii) collected from three coastal lagoons in the north Adriatic Sea and on laboratory-prepared synthetic polyester (PES) of different colour and polypropylene (PP). We compared the cost-effectiveness of the two methods, together with the potential for adverse quantitative or qualitative effects on MP that could alter the capability of the polymers to be recognised via microscopic or spectroscopic techniques. Only 5.5% of the 180 examined crabs contained MP in their gastrointestinal tracts, with a notably high quantitative variability between individuals (from 1 to 117 particles per individual). All MP found was exclusively microfibres, mainly PES, with a mean length (±SE) of 0.5 ± 0.03 mm. The two digestion methods provided comparable estimates on wild crabs and did not cause any visible physical or chemical alterations on laboratory-prepared microfibres treated for up to 4 days. KOH solution was faster and cheaper compared to the enzymatic extraction, involving fewer procedural steps and therefore reducing the risk of airborne contamination. With digestion times longer than 4 days, KOH caused morphological alterations of some of the PES microfibres, which did not occur with the enzymatic digestion. This suggests that KOH is effective for the digestion of small marine invertebrates or biological samples for which shorter digestion time is required, while enzymatic extraction should be considered as alternative for larger organisms or sample sizes requiring longer digestion times.
Screening and Quantification of Micro(Nano)Plastics and Plastic Additives in the Seawater of Mar Menor Lagoon

Abstract:In this work a suspect-screening approach was employed to assess the polymers and plastic additives of micro(nano)plastics (NPL/MPLs) of size ranges from the nm range to 20 μm present in seawater from the top 5 cm of the Mar Menor lagoon during two sampling campaigns (summer and winter), as well of other potentially adsorbed compounds onto the plastic particles surfaces and suspended material. The identification of NPL/MPLs has been based on characteristic Kendrick Mass Defect analysis for each polymer type in mass spectra. The applied methodology allowed to identify NPLs/MPLs of polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), polyisoprene (PI), polybutadiene (PBD), polypropylene (PP), polyamides (PA), polyvinylchloride (PVC), n-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAm), and polydimethylsiloxanes. In addition, PS, PE, PI, PBD, PP, PA, and PVC were confirmed with standards, and the equivalent concentrations were quantified. The results of this study showed that most frequently found compounds were PP, PE, PA and PNIPAm, while the compound found at higher concentrations was by far PP reaching the 9,303 ± 366 ng/mL in one of the samples. A total number of 135 chemical compounds were tentatively identified, 74 of them plastic additives and compounds used in the polymers manufacture or coming from the polymer’s decomposition. In relation to plastic additives, the more frequently tentatively identified compounds were plasticizers such as phthalates group; stabilizers such as antioxidants (e.g., distearyl 3,3′-thiodipropionate, 2,5-di-tert-butylhydroquinone), and UV filters as benzotriazoles. Several flame retardants of the group of phosphates were as well detected. The other compounds tentatively identified in the samples were pharmaceuticals, pesticides, food additives, flavors and natural products that were attached onto the plastic particles and particulate matter from surrounding waters. In regards to the seasonal variation, during the summer a major number of compounds were tentatively detected, while de concentrations of polymers were slightly higher in winter. The spatial distribution showed higher contamination in the southern part of the coastal lagoon.

Abstract:Abstract Sampling, separation, detection, and characterization of microplastics (MPs) dispersed in natural water bodies and ecosystems is a challenging and critical issue for a better understanding of the hazards for the environment posed by such nearly ubiquitous and still largely unknown form of pollution. There is still the need for exhaustive, reliable, accurate, reasonably fast, and cost-efficient analytical protocols allowing the quantification not only of MPs but also of nanoplastics (NPs) and of the harmful molecular pollutants that may result from degrading plastics. Here a set of newly developed analytical protocols, integrated with specialized techniques such as pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), for the accurate and selective determination of the polymers most commonly found as MPs polluting marine and freshwater sediments are presented. In addition, the results of an investigation on the low molecular weight volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released upon photo-oxidative degradation of microplastics highlight the important role of photoinduced fragmentation at a molecular level both as a potential source of hazardous chemicals and as accelerators of the overall degradation of floating or stranded plastic debris.

Abstract:Plastic marine debris (PMD) affects spatial scales of life from microbes to whales. However, understanding interactions between plastic and microbes in the "Plastisphere"—the thin layer of life on the surface of PMD—has been technology‐limited. Research into microbe–microbe and microbe–substrate interactions requires knowledge of community phylogenetic composition but also tools to visualize spatial distributions of intact microbial biofilm communities. We developed a CLASI‐FISH (combinatorial labelling and spectral imaging – fluorescence in situ hybridization) method using confocal microscopy to study Plastisphere communities. We created a probe set consisting of three existing phylogenetic probes (targeting all Bacteria, Alpha‐, and Gammaproteobacteria) and four newly designed probes (targeting Bacteroidetes, Vibrionaceae, Rhodobacteraceae and Alteromonadaceae) labelled with a total of seven fluorophores and validated this probe set using pure cultures. Our nested probe set strategy increases confidence in taxonomic identification because targets are confirmed with two or more probes, reducing false positives. We simultaneously identified and visualized these taxa and their spatial distribution within the microbial biofilms on polyethylene samples in colonization time series experiments in coastal environments from three different biogeographical regions. Comparing the relative abundance of 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing data with cell‐count abundance data retrieved from the microscope images of the same samples showed a good agreement in bacterial composition. Microbial communities were heterogeneous, with direct spatial relationships between bacteria, cyanobacteria and eukaryotes such as diatoms but also micro‐metazoa. Our research provides a valuable resource to investigate biofilm development, succession and associations between specific microscopic taxa at micrometre scales.

Abstract:As an emerging marine pollutant, microplastics represent a focal point in global monitoring and management efforts. With seawater accounts for 97 % of the total global water resources, scientific assessments of microplastics in seawater are crucial for pollution control and management of marine environments. This study focuses on investigating microplastics in near-shore seawater and proposes a rapid and accurate detection method using a constructed confocal Raman spectroscopy detection system. By optimizing the pretreatment process of seawater microplastic samples, the efficient removal of organic matter interference in microplastic detection is achieved. Employing fluorescent labeling addresses the issues of prolonged detection time and high false positive rates associated with traditional methods, enabling rapid differentiation between microplastics and other substances and significantly enhancing detection efficiency and accuracy. Additionally, the use of differential Raman spectroscopy effectively mitigates fluorescence signal interference, thus improving the signal-to-noise ratio of the spectra. By employing dual-wavelength laser excitation at 784 nm/785 nm, microplastics such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) ranging in size from 60 to 500 μm are successfully detected in seawater. The results demonstrate that the proposed pretreatment method for seawater microplastics and novel detection techniques enable rapid screening and comprehensive non-destructive detection of microplastics in seawater, thereby facilitating the characterization of marine microplastics and providing scientific support for enhancing the management of microplastic pollution and ecological risk control.

Abstract:The presence in seawater of low-molecular-weight polyethylene (PE) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), synthetic polymers with high chemical resistance, has been demonstrated in this study for the first time by developing a novel methodology for their recovery and quantification from surface seawater. These synthetic polymer debris (SPD) with very low molecular weights and sizes in the nano- and micro-metre range have escaped conventional analytical methods. SPD have been easily recovered from water samples (2 L) through filtration with a nitrocellulose membrane filter with a pore size of 0.45 μm. Dissolving the filter in acetone allowed the isolation of the particulates by centrifugation followed by drying. The isolated SPD were analysed by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H NMR), identifying PE and PDMS. These polymers are thus persisting on seawater because of their low density and the ponderal concentrations were quantified in mg/m 3 . This method was used in an actual case study in which 120 surface seawater samples were collected during two sampling campaigns in the Mediterranean Sea (from the Gulf of Salerno to the Gulf of Policastro in South Italy). The developed analytical protocol allowed for achieving unprecedented simplicity, rapidity and sensitivity. The 1 H and 13 C NMR structural analysis of the PE debris indicates the presence of oxidised polymer chains with very low molecular weights. Additionally, the origin of those low molecular weight polymers was investigated by analysing influents and effluents from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Salerno as a hot spot for the release of SPD: the analysis indicates the presence of low molecular weight polymers compatible with wax PE, widely used for coating applications, food industry, cosmetics and detergents. Moreover, the origin of PDMS debris found in surface seawater can be ascribed to silicone-based antifoamers and emulsifiers.

Abstract:An intercomparison exercise on "microplastics in sediment" was carried out by five laboratories using samples collected in the Bay of Marseille in September 2021. The results from different extraction and identification methods varied depending on the type and size classes of MPs, and was better than 80 % for the size class >300 μm and for the fragments. The variability in recovery rates can be attributed to the choice of reagents and extraction protocols. Recovery rates per laboratory were between 47 % and 113 % and the use of ZnCl2 and NaI increased recovery rates by an average of 70 %. The lowest recovery rates (47 and 53 %) were attributed to the reference methods (FTIR and LDIR), conversely the highest (80 and 87 %) were attributed to identification by Nile Red. The average ranged between 23 and 53 items /50 g d.w. with decreases offshore and at greater depth.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have recently emerged as a new major and ubiquitous environmental pollutant with still undefined, yet potentially high risks for human health and ecosystems. This has prompted growing public concern along with an increasing number of scientific studies. In particular, recent research has highlighted the need for a standardized methodology to monitor microplastics in different media, particularly in water. This study reports on the use of a new particle counter for the quantitative detection of MPs in water samples based on real-time analysis of fluorescence emissions. The instrument was calibrated using two types of plastic particles, i.e., polyvinyl chloride and high-density polyethylene, selected as examples of high- and low-density plastics, respectively. Specific solvents were used to match the different plastic densities. Measurements were also carried out on particles obtained from wastewater samples collected at the inlet and outlet of specific units of a municipal wastewater treatment plant after sieving, filtering, digestion with hydrogen peroxide to remove degradable organic matter and resuspension in the solvents employed during the calibration step. A Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis performed on the same wastewater samples confirmed the presence of MPs, and, in particular, of polyethylene, in some of the samples in which the highest concentrations were measured applying the proposed method. Therefore, the novel particle counter described in this paper could represent a promising method to quantitatively measure MP concentrations in water samples.

Study of metal and organic contaminants transported by microplastics in the Lebanese coastal environment using ICP MS, GC-MS, and LC-MS

Abstract:An untargeted study of multiclass contaminants associated with microplastics (MPs) in the East Mediterranean was carried out. Samples were collected in 2020-2021 from the shoreline at 14 different locations, along the Lebanese coast. Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) FTIR spectroscopy showed the predominant presence of polyethylene and polypropylene among plastic debris. The non-polar and polar organic compounds sorbed on the MPs were identified and quantified by GC - TOF MS and LC - electrospray MS/MS, respectively. Deconvolution of accurate GC-MS scan data allowed the identification of >130 organic pollutants, 64 of which could be confirmed by matching with the authentic standards, among which a number of previously unreported in targeted GC-MS(MS) methods. In addition to highly toxic, legacy chlorinated pollutants, high levels (average values from 0.8 to 4.0 μg g-1) of some musks, UV filters and UV absorbers were detected. Untargeted LC-MS demonstrated the persistence of several pesticides (i.e., chlorpyrifos) and pharmaceuticals, such as phenacetin and minoxidil, which were quantified. In addition, a study of metals associated with microplastics using ICP-MS confirmed the high potential of microplastics to act as a vector of, among others, toxic metals, such as Cd, Pb, Bi or Hg.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have been suspected as contaminants in various foodstuffs, including salts, all over the world. Regarding the different sizes and polymer types, the mass concentrations of actual plastic particles in salt are not very clear. The purpose of this study is to develop a scalable method for qualitative and quantitative analysis of MPs and NPs by using Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography Quadrupole-Time of Flight mass spectrometry (Py-GC/QTOFMS) to detect their mass concentrations in salt samples. The targeted and suspected lists of polymers in salts were compiled based on the combined results of the high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) full scanning with auxiliary MS dataset and the laser direct infrared (LDIR) chemical imaging analysis. The seven targeted MPs with polymer standards, i.e., polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polycarbonate (PC), were first subjected to a full MS scanning mode of the Py-GC/QTOFMS analysis. Subsequently, the parental masses of their pyrolysis compounds were used as the seeds to generate the related daughter masses. This process established both retention time and mass-pairs matching for the target MS/MS mode for enabling the identification and quantification of the particles. The suspected MPs with a matching degree >0.65 in the LDIR list were explored either by the full scan MS. Only PVC was identified, and PET was suspected. The Py-GC/QTOFMS result is complementary and comparable to the LDIR detection with the matching degree >0.85. We identified that PVC and PET (suspected) can be measured in both commercial and bulk sea salts, and their concentrations in sea salts are much higher than in rock salts, implying heavy contamination of the seawater.
