Abstract:The polycation gel polymer electrolyte (PGPE) is a promising electrolyte material for supercapacitors due to its high ionic conductivity and great flexibility. Herein, we report a novel flexible PGPE film, which is prepared by thermal copolymerization. The superiority of PGPE is attributed to the existence of charged groups in the polymer skeleton. Consequently, the crystallinity of the polymer is effectively reduced, and the migration of the lithium ion is evidently promoted. Moreover, the liquid retention capacity of the film is improved, which enhances its ionic conductivity as well. The reported PGPE exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 57.6 mS cm-1 at 25 °C and a potential window of 0-1.2 V. The symmetrical PGPE supercapacitor (AC/AC) shows 95.21% mass-specific capacitance retention after 5000 cycles at 2 A g-1 with a maximum energy density of 12.8 W h kg-1 and a maximum power density of 5.475 kW kg-1. This study confirms the exciting potential of PGPE for high performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:A novel high‐performance flexible gel polymer electrolyte (FGPE) for supercapacitors is prepared by a freeze‐drying method. In the presence of 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium chloride (BMIMCl) ionic liquid, Li2SO4 can easily be added into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aqueous solution over a large concentration range. The resultant FGPE demonstrates considerably high ionic conductivity (37 mS cm−1) and a high fracture strain at 100% elongation at the optimal weight ratio of PVA:BMIMCl:Li2SO4 = 1:3:2.2. The supercapacitor fabricated with the resultant FGPE and activated carbon electrodes shows an electrode‐specific capacitance of 136 F g−1 with a stable operating voltage of 1.5 V, a maximum energy density of 10.6 Wh kg−1, and a power density of 3400 W kg−1. Double supercapacitors in series can efficiently drive a light emitting diode (LED) bulb for over 5 min and the retention of the specific capacitance reaches 90% even after 3000 charge–discharge cycles. The ionic conductivity and charge–discharge behaviors of the resultant FGPE are not affected by bending up to 180°. The flexible supercapacitor device shows only a small capacitance loss of 18% after 1000 cycles of 135° bending.
A High Energy Density Flexible Solid-State Supercapacitor Based on Poly (arylene Ether Sulfone) Copolymers with Polyether Side Chains for Li+ Conducting Polymer Electrolytes

Abstract:To satisfy the market demand for excellent electrochemical performance, a flexible gel polymer electrolyte (GPEEO) based on poly(arylene ether sulfone) copolymers containing polyether side chains (PAES-EO) was prepared via an ion-exchange reaction with ammonium poly(aryl ether sulfone) (PAES-N) and PEG-SO3-K+ containing EO segments. Li2SO4 was used as the electrolyte salt for the supercapacitor to obtain a wider potential window (1.5 V) and the electrochemical performance of the supercapacitors based on polymer electrolytes with or without EO segments was evaluated and analysed. With the introduction of EO segments, the electrolyte uptake ratio of the electrolyte membrane increased to 53.29% and delivered a higher ionic conductivity of 8.26 x 10(-4) S cm(-1). The supercapacitor based on GPE-EO exhibits a high capacitance of 153.8 F g(-1) and an energy density of 11.67 W h kg(-1) at a current density of 0.1 A g(-1). Simultaneously, this supercapacitor based on GPE-EO possessed excellent flexibility even at a bending angle of 180 degrees and outstanding cycle stability with negligible specific capacitance loss after 5000 cycles. This improvement of performance of gel polymer electrolytes and supercapacitors demonstrates that introducing EO segments can increase the electrochemical performance of PEAS based energy storage devices.
A Self-Healing Gel Polymer Electrolyte, Based on a Macromolecule Cross-Linked Chitosan for Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:Gel polymer electrolytes with a satisfied ionic conductivity have attracted interest in flexible energy storage technologies, such as supercapacitors and rechargeable batteries. However, the poor mechanical strength inhibits its widespread application. One of the most significant ways to avoid the drawbacks of the gel polymer electrolytes without compromising their ion transportation capabilities is to create a self-healing structure with the cross-linking segment. Herein, a new kind of macromolecule chemical cross-linked network ionic gel polymer electrolyte (MCIGPE) with superior electrochemical characteristics, a high flexibility, and an excellent self-healing ability were designed, based on chitosan and dibenzaldehyde-terminated poly (ethylene glycol) (PEGDA) via dynamic imine bonds. The ionic conductivity of the MCIGPE-65 can achieve 2.75 × 10-2 S cm-1. A symmetric all-solid-state supercapacitor employing carbon cloth as current collectors, activated a carbon film as electrodes, and MCIGPE-65 as a gel polymer electrolyte exhibits a high specific capacitance of 51.1 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, and the energy density of 7.1 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 500.2 W kg-1. This research proves the enormous potential of incorporating, environmentally and economically, chitosan into gel polymer electrolytes for supercapacitors.

Abstract:M. Zhai and co-workers report on their preparation of a novel ionic liquid gelled PVA-Li2SO4 flexible gel polymer electrolyte (FGPE) in article number 1500267. The FGPE can be used as both an electrolyte and as a separator for supercapacitors when sandwiched between two carbon electrodes. The fabricated supercapacitor can withstand multi-mechanical bending cycles without suffering any decrease in its electrochemical properties. Potential applications of the system include its use in power sources of wearable electronics.

Abstract:In this paper, a conducting polyaniline hydrogel instead of traditional solid electrode materials is used as an electrode material to prepare high performance flexible solid-state supercapacitors. Conducting polymer hydrogels combine the properties of hydrogel with electrical conductivity, thus offering intrinsic porous conducting frameworks and promoting the transport of charges, ions, and molecules. According to our results, the capacitance of the polyaniline hydrogel electrode is quite remarkable (430 F g(-1)) in this prototype, flexible solid-state supercapacitor with a two-electrode configuration. Furthermore, this supercapacitor shows excellent rate capability, cyclic stability and bendable performance. Moreover, this supercapacitor can drive a glow armlet to work very well, which demonstrates that the device has great potential to work as a power source in real-life applications.

Abstract:Achieving high ionic conductivity, wide voltage window, and good mechanical strength in a single material remains a key challenge for polymer-based electrolytes for use in solid-state supercapacitors (SCs). Herein, we report cross-linked composite gel polymer electrolytes (CGPEs) based on multi-cross-linkable H-shaped poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide) (PEO-PPO) tetrablock copolymer precursors, SiO2 nanoparticles, and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, an ionic liquid (IL). Self-standing CGPE membranes with a high IL content were prepared using in situ cross-linking reactions between the silane groups present in the precursor and the SiO2 surface. The incorporation of an optimal amount of SiO2 increased the cross-linking density of the resulting CGPE while reducing polymer-chain ordering and, consequently, increasing both ionic conductivity and mechanical strength. As a result, the CGPE with 0.1 wt % SiO2 exhibited a high ionic conductivity (2.22 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 25 °C), good tensile strength (453 kPa), and high thermal stability up to 330 °C. Finally, an all-solid-state SC assembled with the prepared CGPE showed a high operating voltage (3 V), a large specific capacitance (103.9 F g-1 at 1 A g-1), and excellent durability (94% capacitance retention over 10,000 charge/discharge cycles), which highlights its strong potential as a solid-state electrolyte for SCs.

Abstract:A gel polymer PVA–KOH–K3[Fe(CN)6] is prepared by potassium hydroxide and potassium ferricyanide doped polyvinyl alcohol, and a solid-state supercapacitor is assembled using the gel polymer as electrolyte and separator, activated carbons as electrode. The gel polymer exhibits flexible, high ionic conductivity and wide potential properties. The electrochemical properties of the supercapacitor are investigated using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge/discharge, and impedance spectroscopy techniques. The electrode specific capacitance of the supercapacitor can be as high as 430.95 F g−1, and after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g−1 it still remains higher than 380 F g−1. The energy density and power density of the supercapacitor reach 57.94 Wh kg−1 and 59.84 kW kg−1, respectively. These novel flexible gel polymers are desirable for applications in supercapacitor devices.
Dual Cation Kgu/PAM Gel Polymer Electrolyte with High Ionic Conductivity and Mechanical Strength for Flexible All-Solid-State Supercapacitors

Abstract:Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) have attracted much attention due to their excellent flexibility, good interface contact, and high safety in solid-state supercapacitors (SSCs). However, in practical applications, GPEs still face low ionic conductivity and poor mechanical strength. This study delineates a novel dual-cationic Kgu/PAM GPE, the ion diffusion coefficients in which are 1.51 x 10-8 cm2 s- 1 (K+) and 4.77 x 10-9 cm2 s-1 (Na+), respectively. Radial distribution function and in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy have confirmed that the migration mechanism of dual-cations in Kgu/PAM is through the long-range hydration channels, which is depended on the continuous formation of binding water facilitated by movement of Kgu and PAM chain segments. When assembled dual-cationic Kgu/PAM GPE to a flexible solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor, it delivers a high ionic conductivity (86.9 mS cm- 1 ), an excellent energy rate density (86.1 Wh kg- 1 ) and outstanding power density (476 W kg-1 ). In addition, dual-cationic Kgu/PAM GPE exhibits an excellent strain threshold of 910 % and remarkable mechanical strength of 35 KPa, good flexibility and flame retardant, highlighting the potential for its practical application in various fields. Collectively, these findings herald a novel paradigm in the development of secure and efficacious flexible wearables.

Abstract:Gel polymer electrolytes are an indispensable part of flexible supercapacitors, since their various characteristics determine the device performance. Here, a composite gel electrolyte (FLPS) mainly consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sodium alginate (SA), K3Fe(CN)(6)/K4Fe(CN)(6), and LiCl is rationally designed, in which PVA and SA form a robust three-dimensional network, the redox pair of K3Fe(CN)(6)/K4Fe(CN)(6) serves as a cross-linking agent with SA and even donates the oxidation-reduction reaction from the Fe3+/Fe2+ couple with additional capacitance for the device, and LiCl functions as an ion carrier and a water-retaining salt to improve the long-term stability of FLPS. Thus, the FLPS-based supercapacitor exhibits superior electrochemical characteristics, displaying impressive pseudocapacitance across all current densities and excellent cycling stability (similar to 99.07% of capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles). Moreover, the FLPS-based supercapacitor demonstrates great low-temperature working ability and pressure responsiveness, suggesting its freeze-resistance, flexibility, and pressure sensing potential. This work provides a promising strategy for preparing tough gel polymer electrolytes with both ion transfer and charge storage ability.

Abstract:A conducting polymer-based hydrogel (PPy/CPH) with a polypyrrole-polyvinyl alcohol interpenetrating network was prepared by utilization of a chemical crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol-H2SO4 hydrogel (CPH) film as flexible substrate followed by vapor-phase polymerization of pyrrole. Then an all-solid-state polymer supercapacitor (ASSPS) was fabricated by sandwiching the CPH film between two pieces of the PPy/CPH film. The ASSPS is mechanically robust and flexible with a tensile strength of 20.83 MPa and a break elongation of 377% which is superior to other flexible conducting polymer hydrogel-based supercapacitors owing to the strong hydrogen bonding interactions among the layers and the high mechanical properties of the PPy/CPH. It exhibits maximum volumetric specific capacitance of 13.06 F/cm3 and energy density of 1160.9 µWh/cm3. The specific capacitance maintains 97.9% and 86.3% of its initial value after 1000 folding cycles and 1000 charge-discharge cycles, respectively. The remarkable the electrochemical and mechanical performance indicates this novel ASSPS device is promising for flexible electronics.
Construction Of Polymer Electrolyte Based On Soybean Protein Isolate And Hydroxyethyl Cellulose For A Flexible Solid-State Supercapacitor

Abstract:Supercapacitors are a very active research topic. However, liquid electrolytes present several drawbacks on security and packaging. Herein, a gel polymer electrolyte was prepared based on crosslinked renewable and environmentally friendly soybean protein isolate (SPI) and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) with 1.0 mol L-1 Li2SO4. Highly hydrophilic SPI and HEC guaranteed a high ionic conductivity of 8.40 x 10(-3) S cm(-1). The fabricated solid-state supercapacitor with prepared gel polymer electrolyte exhibited a good electrochemical performance, that is, a high single electrode gravimetric capacitance of 91.79 F g(-1) and an energy density of 7.17 W h kg(-1) at a current density of 5.0 A g(-1). The fabricated supercapacitor exhibited a flexible performance under bending condition superior to liquid supercapacitor and similar electrochemical performance at various bending angles. In addition, it was proved by an almost 100% cycling retention and a coulombic efficiency over 5000 charge-discharge cycles. For comparison, supercapacitors assembled with commercial aqueous PP/PE separator, pure SPI membrane, and crosslinked SPI membrane were also characterized. The obtained gel polymer electrolyte based on crosslinked SPI and HEC may be useful for the design of advanced polymer electrolytes for energy devices.

Abstract:A new gel polymer electrolyte based on 1-methyl-1-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide ([PMpyr][NTf2]) entrapped in poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP) is prepared and optimized for flexible solid state supercapacitor applications. The structural, thermal, electrical and electrochemical properties of the ionic liquid gel polymer electrolyte membranes are studied by different characterization techniques. The transparent gel polymer electrolyte membranes exhibit high amorphicity and excellent thermal stability. The 20PVdF-HFP:80[PMpyr][NTf2] gel polymer electrolyte membrane possesses a high ionic conductivity (1.596 x 10(-3) S cm(-1)) and wide electrochemical stability window (4.7 V) at room temperature. It is used as the electrolyte material for the fabrication of flexible electric double layer supercapacitors (EDLCs) with multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-added and unadded activated carbon (AC) electrodes. The performances of flexible EDLCs are evaluated using cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements. The EDLC with MWCNT-added AC electrodes exhibits apparently higher specific capacitance of electrode (156.64 F g(-1)), specific energy (30.69 Wh kg(-1)) and specific power (4.13 kW kg(-1)) than that with AC electrodes. The cyclic stability of the former is still in a good condition at the 2000th charge-discharge cycle and much better than the latter. The present comparative study indicates that the 20PVdF-HFP:80[PMpyr][NTf2] gel polymer electrolyte is a good candidate for the development of flexible solid-state supercapacitors. Highly Flexible and Stable Solid-State Supercapacitors based on a Homogeneous Thin Ion Gel Polymer Electrolyte Using a PDMS Stamp.

Abstract:To achieve both high structural integrity and excellent ion transport, designing ion gel polymer electrolytes (IGPEs) composed of an ionic conducting phase and a mechanical supporting polymer matrix is one of the promising material strategies for the development of next-generation all-solid-state energy storage systems. Herein, we prepared an IGPE thin film, in which an ion-diffusing phase containing ionic liquids and lithium salts was bicontinuously intertwined with a cross-linked epoxy phase, using a silicon elastomer-based stamping method, thus producing a homogeneous IGPE-based thin film with a low surface roughness (RRMS = 0.5 nm). Following the optimization of the IGPE thin film in terms of the concentrations of ionic constituents, the film thickness, and various process parameters, the IGPE itself showed a high ion conductivity of 0.23 mS/cm with a low activation energy for lithium ion transport, as well as the high capacitance of approximately 10 μF/cm2 based on the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) configuration. Furthermore, an all-solid-state supercapacitor containing two IGPE-coating activated carbon electrodes produced using our poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) stamping method exhibited high energy and power densities (44 Wh/kg at 875W/kg and 28 kW/kg at 3 Wh/kg). It was also found that this supercapacitor showed a dramatic reduction (more than 50%) of the current-resistance (IR) drop, which is an indicator of low interface resistance, while maintaining the initial electrochemical performance even after severe mechanical deformation such as bending or rolling. Therefore, all these results support that our developed PDMS stamping method enables the rendering of a high-performance ion gel polymer thin-film-based electrolyte with acceptable stability and mechanical flexibility for all-solid-state wearable energy storage devices.

Abstract:The development of high-performance polymer electrolytes will be a crucial research target for flexible solid-state supercapacitors (FSSCs). In this study, a flexible gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) was fabricated to enhance flexible solid-state supercapacitor (FSSC) performance and electrochemical stability. 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfony)imide was used as ionic liquid (IL), poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) as a host polymer with Li1.5Al0.33Sc0.17Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LASGP) serving as ceramic filler to fabricate the GPE films. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) image confirmed that a homogeneous uniform phase with a smooth surface was formed as the ionic liquid was added into the host polymer solution. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show that the PVDF-HFP blend has a semi-crystalline structure while its amorphous nature extended with the increasing amount of IL and LASGP ceramic fillers. The GPE film was used as the electrolyte and separator, due to its high ionic conductivity ( 7.8 × 10 - 2 S cm−1) and excellent thermal stability up to 346 ℃. The FSSC cell with LASGP ceramic filler exhibits a high specific capacitance (115.45 F g−1) with a specific energy density of 27.10 Wh kg−1 at 1 mA. These results indicate that a GPE film with an activated carbon electrode could be a candidate for FSSC applications.

A Low-Cost PAN-b-PEG-b-PAN/TEABF4 Gel Electrolyte for Flexible All-Solid-state Supercapacitors

Abstract:In this study, we present our findings on a soft gel-polymer electrolyte (GPE) utilizing a tri block copolymer, poly (polyacrylonitrile-block-polyethylene-block-polyacrylonitrile) block-polyethylene- block-polyacrylonitrile) (PAN-b-PEG-b-PAN), combined with the plasticizer N , N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and the ionic liquid tetrafluoroborate ammonium (TEABF4). 4 ). We engineered a flexible all-solid-state electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) cell to exploit this GPE. The conductivity of the gel copolymer electrolyte was optimized by fine-tuning the mass ratio of the components. Thermal stability tests showed stable GPE film dimensions even at 120 degrees C with a fiber separator. The optimized EDLC cell demonstrated a broad 2.7 V potential window, high specific capacitance (142.15 F g-1 ), and energy density (518.14 J g-1 ) at a discharge rate of 0.01 A g-1 . Cycling studies revealed a modest 9 % capacitance loss after 3000 charge-discharge cycles, maintaining a stable open-circuit voltage (70 % from 2.7 V to 1.9 V) after 25 h self-discharge process. These results highlight the potential of the GPE in all-solid-state supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:Hydrogels with high ionic conductivity consisting of a cross-linked polymer network swollen in water are very promising to be used as an electrolyte for all-solid-state supercapacitors. However, there are rather few flexible supercapacitors using ionic conducting hydrogel electrolytes reported to date. In this work, highly flexible and ionic conducting polyacrylamide hydrogels were synthesized through a simple approach. On using the ionic hydrogels as the electrolyte, the resulting supercapacitors not only exhibited a high specific capacitance but also showed a long self-discharge time (over 10 hours to the half of original open-circuit voltage) and a low leakage current. These newly-developed all-solid-state supercapacitors can be bent, knot, and kneaded for 5000 cycles without performance decay, suggesting excellent flexibility and mechanical stability. These all-solid-state supercapacitors can also be easily tailored into strip-like supercapacitors without a short circuit, which provides an efficient approach to fabricate wearable energy storage devices.

Cross-Linking of Polymer and Ionic Liquid As High-Performance Gel Electrolyte for Flexible Solid-State Supercapacitors

Abstract:It is highly desirable to develop flexible solid-state electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) with non-liquid electrolyte. However, it is still a great challenge to prepare gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) possessing high ionic conductivity and good mechanical property. In this work, a simple and novel method to improve the conductivity and mechanical properties of GPE film for their applications as electrolyte and separator in EDLC is presented. The GPE film is prepared by cross-linking ionic liquid (IL) with poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) and benzophenone (Bp) followed by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Then, a non-woven cellulose separator (FPC) is used to absorb the GPE. By tuning the mass ratio (n) between IL and PEO, the flexible EDLC cooperated with low-cost active carbon and the electrolyte film with n = 10 has a high capacitance of 70.84 F.g(-1), a wide and stable electrochemical window of 3.5 V, an energy density of 30.13 Wh.kg(-1) and a power density of 874.8 W.kg(-1) at a current density of 1 A.g(-1), which can drive a 3.0 V light-emitting diode (LED). Importantly, the excellent performance of the flexible and low-cost EDLC can be maintained at a bending angle up to 180, indicating the ultra-flexibility. It is expected that the IL-PEO-FPC electrolyte film is a promising candidate of GPE for flexible devices and energy storage systems. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Thermostable gel polymer electrolyte based on succinonitrile and ionic liquid for high-performance solid-state supercapacitors

Abstract:A flexible, free-standing, thermostable gel polymer electrolyte based on plastic crystalline succinonitrile (SN) and ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMImBF4) entrapped in copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP) is prepared and optimized for application in solvent-free solid-state supercapacitors. The synthesized gel polymer electrolyte exhibits a high ionic conductivity over a wide temperature range (from ∼5 × 10−4 S cm−1 at −30 °C up to ∼1.5 × 10−2 S cm−1 at 80 °C) with good electrochemical stability window (−2.9 to 2.5 V). Thermal studies confirm that the SN containing gel polymer electrolyte remains stable in the same gel phase over a wide temperature range from −30 to 90 °C. The electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) have been fabricated using activated carbon as active materials and new gel polymer electrolytes. Electrochemical performance of the EDLCs is assessed through cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge cycling and impedance spectroscopy. The EDLC cells with the proper SN-containing gel polymer electrolyte has been found to give high specific capacitance 176 F g−1 at 0.18 A g−1 and 138 F g−1 at 8 A g−1. These solid-state EDLC cells show good cycling stability and the capability to retain ∼80% of the initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles.
