Abstract:Periodically driven systems have displayed a variety of fascinating phenomena without analogies in static systems, which enrich the classification of quantum phases of matter and stimulate a wide range of research interests. Here, we employ discrete-time quantum walks to investigate a nontrivial topological effect unique to a two-dimensional periodically driven system: chiral edge states can exist at the interface of Floquet insulators whose Chern numbers vanish. Thanks to a resource-saving and flexible fiber-loop architecture, we realize inhomogeneous two-dimensional quantum walks up to 25 steps, over an effective 51 x 51 lattice with tunable local parameters. Spin-polarized chiral edge states are observed at the boundary of two distinct quantum walk domains. Our results contribute to establishing a well-controlled platform for exploring nontrivial topological phases.

Abstract:We demonstrate the coexistence of pseudospin- and valley-Hall-like edge states in a photonic crystal with C-3v symmetry, which is composed of three interlacing triangular sublattices with the same lattice constants. By tuning the geometry of the sublattices, three complete photonic band gaps with nontrivial topology can be created, one of which is due to the band inversion associated with the pseudospin degree of freedom at the Gamma point and the other two due to the gapping out of Dirac cones associated with the valley degree of freedom at the K, K' points. The system can support triband pseudospin- and valley-momentum locking edge states at properly designed domain-wall interfaces. Furthermore, to demonstrate the novel interplay of the two kinds of edge states in a single configuration, we design a four-channel system, where the unidirectional routing of electromagnetic waves against sharp bends between two routes can be selectively controlled by the pseudospin and valley degrees of freedom. Our work combines the pseudospin and valley degrees of freedom in a single configuration and may provide more flexibility in manipulating electromagnetic waves with promising potential for multiband and multifunctional applications.

Abstract:Topological edge states in a photonic integrated circuit based on the platform of silicon nitride are demonstrated with a two-dimensional coupled resonator optical waveguide array involving the synthetic magnetic field for photons at near-infrared wavelengths. Measurements indicate that the topological edge states can be observed at certain wavelengths, with light travelling around the boundary of the array. Abstract:Chiral edge states are a hallmark feature of two-dimensional topological materials. Such states must propagate along the edges of the bulk either clockwise or counterclockwise, and thus produce oppositely propagating edge states along the two parallel edges of a strip sample. However, recent theories have predicted a counterintuitive picture, where the two edge states at the two parallel strip edges can propagate in the same direction; these anomalous topological edge states are named as antichiral edge states. Here, we report the experimental observation of antichiral edge states in a gyromagnetic photonic crystal. The crystal consists of gyromagnetic cylinders in a honeycomb lattice, with the two triangular sublattices magnetically biased in opposite directions. With microwave measurement, unique properties of antichiral edge states have been observed directly, which include tilted dispersion, chiral-like robust propagation in samples with certain shapes, and 100% scattering into backward bulk states at certain terminations. These results extend and supplement the current understanding of chiral edge states.

Abstract:The control over light propagation and localization in photonic crystals offers wide applications from sensing and on-chip routing to lasing and quantum light-matter interfaces. While in electronic crystals magnetic fields can be used to induce a multitude of unique phenomena, the uncharged nature of photons necessitates alternative approaches to bring about similar control over photons at the nanoscale. Here, we experimentally realize pseudomagnetic fields in two-dimensional photonic crystals through engineered strain of the lattice. Analogous to strained graphene, this induces flat-band Landau levels at discrete energies. We study the spatial and spectral properties of these states in silicon photonic crystals at telecom wavelengths with far-field spectroscopy. Moreover, taking advantage of the photonic crystal's design freedom, we realize domains of opposite pseudomagnetic field and observe topological edge states at their interface. We reveal that the strain-induced states can achieve remarkably high quality factors despite being phase-matched to the radiation continuum. Together with the high density of states and high degeneracy associated with flat bands, this provides powerful prospects for enhancing light-matter interactions, and demonstrates a design principle to govern both on-chip and radiating light fields.

Abstract:Photonic topological insulators protected by the lattice spatial symmetry(e.g.,inversion and rotation symmetry)mainly support single type edge state,interpreted by either valley or pseudo-spin.Here,we demonstrate theo-retically,numerically,and experimentally that a type of judiciously designed two-dimensional Kekulé photonic crystal with time reversal symmetry can possess topological valley and pseudo-spin edge states in different fre-quency bands.Topologically robust transportation of both the valley and pseudo-spin edge states was confirmed by measuring the transmission of straight and z-shaped interface supported edge mode and comparing with bulk modes in the microwave frequency regime.In addition,we show that due to the distinct topological origins,valley and pseudo-spin edge states can be distinguished by examining their end-scattering into the free space.Our sys-tem provides an alternative way in manipulating electromagnetic waves with additional degree-of-freedom,which has potential applications for robust and high-capacity waveguiding and multi-mode dividing.

Abstract:A new class of phenomena stemming from topological states of quantum matter has recently found a variety of analogies in classical systems. Spin-locking and one-way propagation have been shown to drastically alter our view on scattering of electromagnetic waves, thus offering an unprecedented robustness to defects and disorder. Despite these successes, bringing these new ideas to practical grounds meets a number of serious limitations. In photonics, when it is crucial to implement topological photonic devices on a chip, two major challenges are associated with electromagnetic dissipation into heat and out-of-plane radiation into free space. Both these mechanisms may destroy the topological state and seriously affect the device performance. Here we experimentally demonstrate that the topological order for light can be implemented in all-dielectric on-chip prototype metasurfaces, which mitigate the effect of Ohmic losses by using exclusively dielectric materials, and reveal that coupling of the system to the radiative continuum does not affect the topological properties. Spin-Hall effect of light for spin-polarized topological edge states is revealed through near-field spectroscopy measurements.

Abstract:Valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states, whose topologically protected properties have great application potential in high-speed information processing and communication, have recently become important frontiers in topological photonics. However, valley photonic topological insulators mainly support single-type topological states through breaking lattice spatial symmetry. It remains difficult for different types of topological states to coexist in a specific photonic system. In this paper, we propose judiciously designed substrate-integrated topological photonic crystals (but without metal vias) with C3 symmetry that can support valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states in different waveguide channels. Via numerical simulations and measurements, we demonstrate the robust transmission of both valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states through sharp corners and we show high-efficiency coupling between classical guided waves and topological waves. More importantly, we achieve smooth transitions between chiral and trivial edge states, trivial edge states and valley kink states, as well as valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states by bridging different waveguide channels. Abstract:Abstract The quantum spin Hall effect lays the foundation for the topologically protected manipulation of waves, but is restricted to one-dimensional-lower boundaries of systems and hence limits the diversity and integration of topological photonic devices. Recently, the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence of band topology has been extended to higher-order cases that enable explorations of topological states with codimensions larger than one such as hinge and corner states. Here, we demonstrate a higher-order quantum spin Hall effect in a two-dimensional photonic crystal. Owing to the non-trivial higher-order topology and the pseudospin-pseudospin coupling, we observe a directional localization of photons at corners with opposite pseudospin polarizations through pseudospin-momentum-locked edge waves, resembling the quantum spin Hall effect in a higher-order manner. Our work inspires an unprecedented route to transport and trap spinful waves, supporting potential applications in topological photonic devices such as spinful topological lasers and chiral quantum emitters.

Abstract:This study reports a modified Haldane model that supports transitions between valley and Chern topological phases in photonic crystals. Berry curvatures of this system can be flexibly diffused, converged, or flipped by endowing different model parameters, thus exhibiting exotic topological interface/edge behaviors, such as topological bound states with ideally zero dispersion. Importantly, the coexistence of chiral and antichiral edge states preserved simultaneously by valley and Chern topological phases is achieved by splicing together two kinds of topological structures as an entirety. It further employs a honeycomb lattice comprising gyromagnetic and ceramic cylinders at microwave frequencies, where inversion and time-reversal symmetries can be flexibly manipulated. Topological interface transport is demonstrated, including two opposite signs of group velocities jointly protected by topologically distinct regimes. These results bridge the gap between valley and Chern topological physics and shed light on developing reconfigurable integrated device applications for classical (quantum) information processing and photonic computing. The coexistence of chiral and antichiral edge states is proposed for photonic crystals by a modified Haldane model. Abstract:We present an all-dielectric photonic crystal structure that supports two-dimensionally confined helical topological edge states. The topological properties of the system are controlled by the crystal parameters. An interface between two regions of differing band topologies gives rise to topological edge states confined in a dielectric slab that propagate around sharp corners without backscattering. Three dimensional finite-difference time-domain calculations show these edges to be confined in the out-of-plane direction by total internal reflection. Such nanoscale photonic crystal architectures could enable strong interactions between photonic edge states and quantum emitters.

Abstract:Topology manifesting in many branches of physics deepens our understanding on state of matters. Topological photonics has recently become a rapidly growing field since artificial photonic structures can be well designed and constructed to support topological states, especially a promising large-scale implementation of these states using photonic chips. Meanwhile, due to the inapplicability of Hall conductance to photons, it is still an elusive problem to directly measure the integer topological invariants and topological phase transitions for photons. Here, we present a direct observation of topological winding numbers by using bulk-state photon dynamics on a chip. Furthermore, we for the first time experimentally observe the topological phase transition points via single-photon dynamics. The integrated topological structures, direct measurement in the single-photon regime and strong robustness against disorder add the key elements into the toolbox of `quantum topological photonics' and may enable topologically protected quantum information processing in large scale.

Abstract:A photonic crystal can realize an analogue of a valley Hall insulator, promising more flexibility than in condensed-matter systems to explore these exotic topological states. Recently discovered1,2 valley photonic crystals (VPCs) mimic many of the unusual properties of two-dimensional (2D) gapped valleytronic materials3,4,5,6,7,8,9. Of the utmost interest to optical communications is their ability to support topologically protected chiral edge (kink) states3,4,5,6,7,8,9 at the internal domain wall between two VPCs with opposite valley-Chern indices. Here we experimentally demonstrate valley-polarized kink states with polarization multiplexing in VPCs, designed from a spin-compatible four-band model. When the valley pseudospin is conserved, we show that the kink states exhibit nearly perfect out-coupling efficiency into directional beams, through the intersection between the internal domain wall and the external edge separating the VPCs from ambient space. The out-coupling behaviour remains topologically protected even when we break the spin-like polarization degree of freedom (DOF), by introducing an effective spin–orbit coupling in one of the VPC domains. This also constitutes the first realization of spin–valley locking for topological valley transport.

Abstract:Topological insulators host topology-linked boundary states, whose spin and charge degrees of freedom could be exploited to design topological devices with enhanced functionality. We experimentally observe that dissipationless chiral edge states in a spin-orbit coupled anomalous Floquet topological phase exhibit topological spin texture on boundaries, realized via a two-dimensional quantum walk. Our experiment shows that, for a walker traveling around a closed loop along the boundary in real space, its spin evolves and winds through a great circle on the Bloch sphere, which implies that edge-spin texture has nontrivial winding. This topological spin winding is protected by a chiral-like symmetry emerging for the low-energy Hamiltonian. Our experiment confirms that two-dimensional anomalous Floquet topological systems exhibit topological spin texture on the boundary, which could inspire novel topology-based spintronic phenomena and devices.

Abstract:Topological protection in photonics offers new prospects for confining and guiding light waves. Up to now, most reported works on topological photonics have focused on the realization of topological phases originally found in condensed matter systems. However, photonic systems can possess a distinguishing topology that differs from their quantum electronic counterparts due to the vectorial nature of light. Here, dual-polarization topological photonic states are theoretically predicted and experimentally demonstrated at optical frequencies on the all-dielectric silicon-on-insulator platform. The topological band gaps opening at K/K ' valleys for both TE- and TM-polarizations in the properly designed breathing Kagome photonic crystal slabs are demonstrated, leading to dual-polarization topological edge states below the light cone. The topological edge states are directly observed by imagining the near fields with scattering scanning near-field microscopy. In addition, the significant improvement of the quality factor of topological states via engineering the transition near the boundary along with the robustness of edge states is presented. The proposed dual-polarization topological states and the improvement of quality factor via boundary profile engineering paves the way toward novel applications of topological photonics for realizing integrated polarization-dependent applications such as polarization multiplexing photonic devices and on-chip chiral quantum optics. Topological photonics offers new prospects for confining and guiding light waves. For the first time, dual-polarization topological edge states are experimentally demonstrated on the silicon-on-insulator platform at optical frequencies. The topological edge states are directly observed by imaging the near fields with scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy.image
