Abstract:Understanding the elemental and structural evolution from green fibers to inorganic fibers is important for fabricating high-performance ceramic fibers via the polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) route. In a previous study, we found a novel polyborazine precursor, poly[2-propylamino-4,6-bis(methylamino)borazine-co-tri(methylamino)borazine] (PPMAB), which possesses a high ceramic yield and outstanding spinnability. Herein, we provide an insight into the evolution process from PPMAB to inorganic BN fibers. During the curing process, NH3 only reacted with the B–NHCH3 groups in PPMAB to form B–NH2 groups, which further reacted with B–NHCH3 to form B–NH–B bridges. Therefore, crosslinked networks were formed in the cured fibers and the gel content increased from 52.3 to 92.1 wt%. In the nitridation process, NH3 not only reacted with unreacted B–NHCH3 but also reacted with B–NHCH2CH2CH3 groups to form B–NH2 groups, which reacted with N–CH3 bridges in the adjacent PPMAB molecule to form –N(B3N3)3- networks. Simultaneously, CH3NH2 and CH3CH2CH2NH2 escaped from the fibers, and the carbon content of the fibers was reduced from 20.588 wt% to 0.115 wt%. By controlling the curing and nitridation processes, the curing degree can be enhanced, whereas the pore defects resulting from gas molecular escape can be effectively reduced. Thus, dense inorganic BN fibers with excellent dielectric properties (2.33 < ε < 2.5, tan δ < 3.4x10−3) and high tensile strength (1.6 GPa) were fabricated. The present study not only provides ideas for the design and synthesis of polyborazine precursors, but also for the fabrication of high-performance BN fibers.

Abstract:Given the superior thermal stability and microwave transparency features, continuous BN fibers have displayed great potential to fulfill the increasing demand for high-temperature structural and functional materials. The performance of BN ceramic fiber depends heavily upon its composition and microstructure. Herein, nearly stoichiometric BN fibers with high crystallinity were achieved through a facile boron trichloride assisted curing process. The fibers achieved a boron/nitrogen element ratio of 0.996:1 with increasing the degree of curing. After subsequent heat treatment, the fibers had uniform elemental distribution and h-BN crystal structure. Compared with pure NH3 curing, the BN fibers cured with BCl3 demonstrated higher crystallinity (92.35%) and consistent orientation (79.8%). The existing state changes of elements revealed BCl3 assisted curing process could evenly disperse B atoms into the precursor fibers to fill the vacancies caused by nitrogen enrichment. These insights improve our understanding of preceramic fibers treatment for exploiting high-performance BN ceramic fibers.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Abstract:Boron nitride (BN) ceramic fibers containing amounts of silicon nitride (Si3N4) were prepared using hybrid precursors of poly(tri(methylamino)borazine) (PBN) and polycarbosilane (PCS) via melt-spinning, curing, decarburization under NH3 to 1000 °C and pyrolysis up to 1600 °C under N2. The effect of Si3N4 contents on the microstructure of the BN/Si3N4 composite ceramics was investigated. Series of the BN/Si3N4 composite fibers containing various amounts of Si3N4 from 5 wt% to 25 wt% were fabricated. It was found that the crystallization of Si3N4 could be totally restrained when its content was below 25 wt% in the BN/Si3N4 composite ceramics at 1600 °C, and the amorphous BN/Si3N4 composite ceramic could be obtained with a certain ratio. The mean tensile strength and Young’s modulus of the composite fibers correlated positively with the Si3N4 mass content, while an obvious BN (shell)/Si3N4 (core) was formed only when the Si3N4 content reached 25 wt%.

Abstract:Hexagonal boron nitride ( h -BN) materials with excellent physicochemical stability and processibility have been considered as promising engineering materials. However, their practical applications are rather limited by the difficulty in constructing the well-bonded h -BN ceramic. Herein, we present a reaction welding strategy for facile preparation of well-bonded h -BN fibers (BNFs) network by using ethanolamine (ETA) containing alcoholic hydroxyl and primary amine groups as crosslinking agent. The formed >B-O-H 2 C-H 2 C-H 2 N|→B B-N-B< covalent bond between BNFs. Based on this synthetic strategy and a room-temperature molding process followed by a calcination step, a series of resilient BNFs ceramics with high processibility, typical diamagnetism, low dielectric constant (∼ 2.1) and loss, good resistance to temperature different, corrosion, oxidation and abrasion are produced. Besides, they also exhibit excellent strain and damage tolerance, the maximum compression strain and strength can reach up to 38% and ∼ 33 MPa, respectively. Significantly, the deliberately designed BNFs vessel can be successfully used for the alloying of high melting point metals, showing both structural/chemical robustness and good reusability. This ingenious design for well-bonded BNFs network not only is a good model for exploring the welding way for h -BN powders, but also opens up numerous opportunities for practical applications.

Abstract:Boron nitride (BN) interfacial layer with controlled thickness and structure was prepared on the surface of near stoichiometric ratio SiC fiber preforms by a chemical vapor deposition process, and the SiC/SiC composites were obtained by polymer precursor infiltration and pyrolysis process. The microstructure of the BN interfacial layer and SiC/SiC composites was tested by scanning electron microscopy, and the mechanical behavior of SiC/SiC composites was characterized by a mechanical properties test. Results showed that BN interfacial layer was evenly distributed in the fiber preforms with excellent thickness consistency. As the thickness of the BN interfacial layer increased, the deflection path of the crack increased gradually, resulting in the flexural strength first increasing and then decreasing. The mechanical behavior mentioned above was mainly attributed to the dual effects of load transfer and crack propagation of the BN interfacial layer; that was, the crack propagation of ceramic matrix under external load lengthened the path of load transfer and formed a large number of fibers bridging and pulling out successively, which contributed to the energy dissipation mechanism.

Abstract:Boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS) is an attractive nanomaterial to improve polymeric materials in hydrogels due to their high mechanical properties, robust interfacial properties with polymer, and non-toxicity. However, the mismatching deformation capacity between BNNS and hydrogels results in damage to the BNNS-hydrogels interface and deteriorates the tensile properties of BNNS reinforced hydrogels. By adopting nanotechnology, the brittle nature of BNNSs can be modified. A novel penta-BNNS exhibits pentagonal rings, presenting ductile behavior under tensile deformation. The tensile test is performed by molecular dynamics simulations. The simulation results show that the ultimate failure strain of the penta-BNNS is significantly increased, which is attributed to the structure transition of the pentagonal rings in the penta-BNNS under tensile deformation. Due to the structure transition, the deformation capacity of the penta-BNNS is significantly improved with respect to the hexa -BNNS. This study links the structure to ductile behavior, which helps to devise advanced two-dimensional nanomaterials for improving hydrogels.

Abstract:We constructed a series of novel 3D-BC2N structures that can be obtained by compressing well-mixed carbon nanotube and boron nitride nanotube arrays. Sequential theoretical calculations indicated a variety of electronic and mechanical properties, such as superhardness, tunable band gap, and ductility, for these novel 3D-BC2N polymorphs. In specific, 3D (6,6)-II, 3D (4,4)-II, 3D (8,8), 3D (6,6)-I and 3D (8,0) are energetically more favorable than previously proposed diamond-like beta-BC2N; the hardness of 3D (6,6)-II can reach a remarkably high value of 72 GPa; 3D (6,0) and 3D (8,0) are direct gap superhard phases; and 3D (10,0) has a semimetallic nature.

Abstract:One of the arduous challenges in nanotechnology is to mass-fabricate useful and desired nanostructures and devices using cost-effective processes. Here we report the first creation of B6Nx/BN coaxial nanowires and branched nanofeather nanojunctions with radial heterostructures using simple nitriding processing of pure boron nanostructured precursors at 1200 degrees C. The produced nanostructures consist of a core nanowire with rhombohedral structure and stoichiometry of B6Nx, a metastable high pressure phase, and a hexagonal BN sheath. We suggest that the BN shell layers formed first act as the high-pressure nanocell to provide the foundation for the formation of the B6Nx core in the nitriding process. This simple process might enable the studies of high-pressure-induced phase transformation and reaction in a nanosystem at ambient pressure, and be extended to bulk fabrication of a wealth of nano-heterostructures and nanocomposites in a B-C-N-O system.

Abstract:Based on a biomimetic design, Si3N4/BN composites with laminated structures have been prepared and investigated through composition control and structure design. To further improve the mechanical properties of the composites, Si3N4 matrix layers were reinforced by SiC whiskers and BN separating layers were modified by adding Si3N4 or Al2O3. The results showed that the addition of SiC whiskers in the Si3N4 matrix layers could greatly improve the apparent fracture toughness (reaching 28.1 MPa(.)m(1/2)), at the same time keeping the higher bending strength (reaching 651.5 MPa) of the composites. Additions of 50 wt% Al2O3 or 10 wt% Si3N4 to BN interfacial layers had a beneficial effect on the strength and toughness of the laminated Si3N4/BN composites. Through observation of microstructure by SEM, multilevel toughening mechanisms contributing to high toughness of the laminated Si3N4/BN composites were present as the first-level toughening mechanisms from BN interfacial layers as crack deflection, bifurcation, and pull-out of matrix sheets, and the secondary toughening mechanism from whiskers in matrix layers.

Abstract:Continuous SiC fibers with excellent mechanical properties and high‐temperature resistance possess immense potential as reinforcements for aeroengines. In this work, we prepared functionalized boron nitride nanosheet (F‐BNNS) composite SiC (F‐BNNS/SiC) fibers by polymer‐derived method. Due to the existence of F‐BNNS, the F‐BNNS/SiC fibers demonstrate an improved tensile strength up to 2300 MPa, representing a 25% increase compared to the original SiC fibers. Furthermore, owing to the chemical bonds established between the F‐BNNS and the SiCxOy network, the decomposition of the SiCxOy amorphous phase and the crystallization of SiC at high temperatures is effectively suppressed. The F‐BNNS/SiC fibers exhibit improved high‐temperature resistance, maintaining a tensile strength of 720 MPa up to 1500°C, while the SiC fibers completely degraded under the same conditions. The successful preparation of BNNS/SiC fibers may offer new insights into the performance enhancement of advanced ceramic fibers.

Abstract:Silicon nitride ceramics are regarded as a promising material for high-temperature structural applications due to their remarkable characteristics, including high strength, hardness, thermal conductivity, low dielectric properties, and resistance to creep at elevated temperatures. However, their susceptibility to catastrophic fracture at high temperatures remains a concern. Herein, Si3N4/BN fibrous monolithic ceramics have been successfully prepared by employing wet-spinning and hot-pressing techniques. We delved into the design and optimization of the spinning slurry and examined how the Si3N4/BN fiber diameter affects the ceramics' microstructure and mechanical properties. The spinning slurry exhibited exceptional stability and spinnability. Decreasing the fiber diameter contributed to material densification and improved mechanical properties. Notably, when the fiber diameter is 0.9 mm, the fabricated Si3N4/BN fibrous monolithic ceramics demonstrate a carbon content of 0.82%, a three-point bending strength of 357 ± 24 MPa, and a fracture toughness of 8.8 ± 0.36 MPa·m1/2. This investigation offers valuable insights into producing high-performance Si3N4/BN composite ceramics utilizing hot-pressing technology.

Abstract:Abstract A thin BN interphase is applied on BNNTs surface to tailor the interfacial bonding between BNNTs and SiC matrix in hierarchical SiC f /SiC composites. The thickness of BN interphase ranging from 10 to 70 nm can be optimized by chemical vapor deposition after BNNTs are in situ grown on SiC fiber surface. Without BN interphase, the fracture toughness of hierarchical SiC f /SiC composites can be impaired by 13.6% due to strong interfacial bonding. As long as BN interphase with 30–45 nm thickness is applied, the interfacial bonding can be optimized and fracture toughness of hierarchical composites can be improved by 27.3%. It implies that tailoring BNNTs/matrix interface by depositing a layer of BN interphase is in favor of activating energy dissipation mechanisms at nanoscale induced by BNNTs.

Abstract:The interphase in continuous SiC fiber reinforced SiC ceramic matrix composites (SiCf/SiC) generally plays a key role for load-transfer, interfacial debonding and fibers protection, consequently tailoring the mechanical properties, thermodynamic stability, corrosion resistance of composites. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), which possesses a graphite-like layered structure and better oxidation resistance compared with pyrolytic carbon (PyC), is now considered as one of the best candidates as interphase in SiCf/SiC composites. In this paper, the influences of different preparation methods on the microstructure, crystal structure, and thickness of boron nitride (BN) interphase are summarized. And the research progress of CVI (or CVD) preparation of BN and BN-based multiple-layers interphases are emphasized. The effects of different preparation methods on the mechanical and thermal properties of SiCf/SiC composites and the solutions to improve the crystal ordering of BN are summarized. Moreover, the future development regarding optimization in the preparation method and microstructure tailoring of BN interphase are discussed.

Abstract:The boron nitride reinforced fused silica (BN/SiO2) ceramics are excellent high-temperature wave-transparent candidates, but encumbered by the unsatisfactory reliability and economy until now. Herein, promising BN whisker reinforced SiO2 (BNW/SiO2) ceramics are fabricated via hot-pressing, aiming to provide fundamental insight into their microstructural evolution, mechanical and dielectric properties. The densification behaviour and microstructural evolution are characterized by step-testing the sintering temperature and the BNW content, determining that SiO2 matrix undergoes crystal nucleus breeding (≤1300 °C), followed by nucleation and growth (>1300 °C), and BNW presents a uniform and stable structure (≤1350 °C) and skin-core structure (1450 °C), respectively. The underlying strengthening and toughening mechanisms are elucidated through constructing a multilevel porosity dependence of mechanical behaviour associated with the BNW content. Compared with 5 wt. % BNW/SiO2 ceramic sintered at 1350 °C (S5-1350), the lightweight 20 wt. % BNW/SiO2 ceramic sintered at 1300 °C (S20-1300) exhibits 619.1% higher machinability parameter while maintaining the mechanical properties. Moreover, the lightweight S20-1300 possesses a low dielectric constant (ε) of 3.77, loss tangent (tan δ) of 1.25 × 10-3 and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of 1.34 × 10-6 K-1. The insights obtained from this study would help to advance the application of BN/SiO2 ceramics in high-temperature radome.

Abstract:In this study, high loadings of boron nitride (BN) nanoplatelets were added to silica fiber-reinforced phenolic composites to study the multifunctional impact of BN loading and manufacturing processing on the subsequent mechanical, thermal, and thermomechanical properties. A series of high-quality laminates were made with various loadings of BN using compression-molded out-of-autoclave processing. Three-point bend and short beam shear testing determined the relationship between BN loading and mechanical performance. The fracture properties were analyzed using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The thermal conductivity performance was increased up to a 93% improvement, indicating the thermal management multifunctionality of the modified composites without changing the crosslinking ability or glass transition temperature significantly. The modified performance of hybrid silica/phenolic/BN composites is demonstrated through micromechanical multiscale modeling, where BN loading and particle stress concentrations impact the modulus and strength of the composite.

Abstract:In this study, silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics added with and without boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) were fabricated by hot-pressing method. The influence of sintering temperature and BNNTs content on the microstructures and mechanical properties of Si3N4 ceramics were investigated. It was found that both flexural strength and fracture toughness of Si3N4 were improved when sintering temperature increases. Moreover, α-Si3N4 phase could transform into β-Si3N4 phase completely when sintering temperature rises to 1800°C and above. BNNTs can enhance the fracture toughness of Si3N4 dramatically, which increases from 7.2MPam1/2 (no BNNTs) to 10.4MPam1/2 (0.8wt% BNNTs). However, excessive addition of BNNTs would reduce the fracture toughness of Si3N4. Meanwhile, the flexural strength and relative density of Si3N4 decreased slightly when BNNTs were added. The related toughening mechanism was also discussed.

Abstract:The development of low loading fraction nanoscale reinforcements that can be used to improve the dielectric and thermal properties of a polymer remains a challenge by the reason of the insurmountable difficulties with exfoliation and dispersion of polymer nanocomposites. Here, we combined noodle‐like boron nitride nanoribbons (BNNRs) with epoxy resin (EP) by a facile in situ synthesis. The hydroxyl and amino on the BNNRs surface can not only improve dispersibility but also conduct the formation of EP with BNNRs by the in situ ring‐opening reaction. The thermal behavior, dielectric properties, and thermal conductivity of BNNRs/EP nanocomposites with different BNNRs contents were investigated. At an extremely low BNNRs loading fraction of 1 wt%, the thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite increased 48%, which is attributed to the long continuous heat conduction path formed by the strong integration of BNNRs and EP. In addition, the electrical breakdown strength increased from 95.58 to 159.17 kV·mm−1 as the BNNRs content increased, while the nanocomposites maintained acceptable dielectric properties. The results indicate the potential for BNNRs as a new class of nanofiller for dielectric polymers.

Addressing amorphization and transgranular fracture of B 4 C through Si doping and TiB 2 microparticle reinforcing

Abstract:Over the last two decades, many studies have contributed to improving our understanding of the brittle failure mechanisms of boron carbide and provided a road map for inhibiting the underlying mechanisms and improving the mechanical response of boron carbide. This paper provides a review of the design and processing approaches utilized to address the amorphization and transgranular fracture of boron carbide, which are mainly based on what we have found through 9 years of work in the field of boron carbides as armor ceramics.

Abstract:We report on post-synthesis carbon doping of individual boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) via in situ electron-beam irradiation inside an energy-filtering 300 keV high-resolution transmission electron microscope. The substitution of C for B and N atoms in the honeycomb lattice was demonstrated through electron energy loss spectroscopy, spatially resolved energy-filtered elemental mapping, and in situ electrical measurements. Substitutional C doping transformed BNNTs from electrical insulators to conductors. In comparison with the existing post-synthesis doping methods for nanoscale materials (e.g., ion implantation and diffusion), the discovered electron-beam-induced doping is a well-controlled, little-damaging, room-temperature, and simple strategy that is expected to demonstrate great promise for post-synthesis doping of diverse nanomaterials in the future.
