Abstract:Carbon nanofibers yarns (CNY) have been prepared by carbonizing twisted electrospun PAN nanofibers, which can be used as the electrode of fiber-shaped all-solid-state supercapacitor after depositing conductive polymer of polypyrrole (PPy) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) on their surface to form a core-shell structure (CNY@PPy@rGO). The flexible and binder-free fiber supercapacitors with PVA/H3PO4 gel electrolyte have a high specific capacitance (92.57 F/g, 80.46 F/cm3, 836.87 mF/cm2, and 111.46 mF/cm of CM, CV, CA, and CL, respectively, at the scan rate of 2 mV/s) thanks to the core-shell structure and synergistic effects of three conponents. It also shows high cycling performance with 86% capacitance retention after 10000 cycles with excellent flexibility and stability at different bending angles.

Abstract:The close integration of an active layer with a current collector is of significance for the properties of supercapacitor electrodes. Herein, we propose a novel and feasible strategy where graphene hydrogels are implanted onto the carbon cloth on which polypyrrole is electrodeposited to obtain specially constructed electrodes. Particularly, the graphene oxide colloid drop-coated on the current collector undergoes a mild hydrothermal reduction to form a graphene hydrogel film implanted onto the carbon cloth. The integrated graphene/carbon cloth film with a porous graphene framework effectively contributes to the polypyrrole loading and endows the as-prepared electrode with enhanced electrochemical properties. The optimized electrode presents superb specific capacitances (522.3 F g–1 at 0.7 A g–1, 1462.5 mF cm–2 at 2 mA cm–2), with satisfactory rate capability, cycling lifetime, and bending performance. The corresponding device can achieve a desirable energy density (88.67 μWh cm–2, 15.8 Wh kg–1) and power density (14.65 mW cm–2, 2.64 kW kg–1). The design method reported in this paper could provide a new pathway toward constructing high-performing electrodes based on graphene materials.

Abstract:Uniform deposition of thin conducting polymer coatings on the surface of a porous structure is in demand for the fabrication of high performance electrodes for energy storage. A facile pulsed electrochemical method is developed in the present work for the preparation of porous reduced graphene oxide/polypyrrole (rGO/PPy) composite films. This method combines blade casting of graphene oxide (GO) gel and pulsed electrochemical technic which not only simplifies the precursor electrolyte but also preserves the porous structure of GO gel. The optimized rGO/PPy composite film exhibits a well-defined porous structure, leading to superior electrochemical performance with a high specific capacitance of 414 F g−1 at 0.2 mA cm−2. This optimized rGO/PPy electrode further demonstrates a large areal capacitance (419 mF cm−2) and excellent rate performance (180 mF cm−2 even at 40 mA cm−2 with 43% retention). Two-electrode aqueous supercapacitor based on the optimized rGO/PPy gel film electrodes exhibits excellent cycling stability with 95.7% capacitance retention after 10000 cycles. Moreover, the as-fabricated flexible supercapacitor based on the rGO/PPy film electrodes on carbon cloth substrate shows good flexibility with 100% capacitance retention after 100 bending cycles. The present work provides a feasible electrochemical route for the fabrication of rGO based composite film electrodes.

Abstract:Polypyrrole (PPy)/graphene composite aerogel with three-dimensional porous network structure is prepared by a facile one-step hydrothermal method using Alizarin Red S (ARS) as crosslinker, oxidant and dopant. Analysis of infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm the elimination of oxygen functional groups of graphene oxide, the successful polymerization of PPy and the efficient doping effect of ARS. The optimized aerogel electrode (PGA-10) provides outstanding specific capacitance of 461 F/g at a current density of 0.5A/g. The assembled symmetrical flexible solid supercapacitor constructed from two identical PGA-10 electrodes exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, 134 F/g (316.67 mF/cm2) within a wide potential window up to 1.8V, 60.3 W h kg−1 (142.5 μW h cm−2) at power density of 900.7 W kg−1 (900.7 μW cm−2), while maintaining good cycle stability (capacitance retention rate of 84.4% after 10,000 cycles) and excellent flexibility. This work demonstrates that the feature of high flexibility, light-weight and outstanding supercapacitive performances for PGA-10 composite aerogel can provide promising applications in wearable and portable electronics.

Abstract:Abstract Supercapacitors also known as electrochemical capacitors, that store energy via either Faradaic or non-Faradaic processes, have recently grown popularity mainly because they complement and can even replace, conventional energy storage systems in variety of applications. Supercapacitor performance can be improved significantly by developing new nanocomposite electrodes which utilizes both the energy storage processes simultaneously. Here we report, fabrication of the freestanding hybrid electrodes, by incorporating graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNT) in pyrrole monomer via its in-situ polymerization. At the scan rate of 5 mV s −1 , the specific capacitance of the polypyrrole-CNT-graphene (PCG) electrode film was 453 F g −1 with ultrahigh energy and power density of 62.96 W h kg −1 and 566.66 W kg −1 respectively, as shown in the Ragone plot. A nanofibrous membrane was electrospun and effectively used as a separator in the supercapacitor. Four supercapacitors were assembled in series to demonstrate the device performance by lighting a 2.2 V LED.

Abstract:A promising supercapacitor material based on graphene/polypyrrole (PPy) has been successfully synthesized via in situ oxidation polymerization of pyrrole monomers in aqueous graphene oxide (GO) solutions, followed by chemical reduction using ethylene glycol (EG). Unlike the commonly employed hydrazine reduction, the moderate EG reductant does not destruct the PPy conjugative structures, thus facilitating utilization of the electroactive conductive polymer. The morphologies and the structures of the as-prepared materials are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). And the electrochemical performance of the fabricated electrodes was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The EG-RGO/PPy electrode shows large specific capacitance, high rate performance, and good charge-discharge stability as well. The excellent electrochemical capability is mainly accounted for the sound composite construction that improves the effective utilization of electroactive PPy component, accelerates shuttling the charged carriers, and alleviates the swelling/shrinkage of polymer chains. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Abstract Polypyrrole complex nitrogen-doped porous carbon matrix (PPy/N-PCM) was synthesized by a simple two-step method. Firstly, graphene oxide was prepared by the modified Hummers method. Secondly, Polypyrrole was compounded on the graphene oxide substrate, and the carbon matrix with a high specific surface area was obtained through high-temperature carbonization and KOH activation, and polypyrrole was used as a nitrogen source for the final nitrogen-doped composite material. The structure characterization of the carbon matrix and the final composite material shows that the carbon matrix surface has obvious porous structure, and the polypyrrole nanospheres grow uniformly on the porous carbon matrix surface. The electrochemical evaluation show that the prepared PPy/N-PCM has excellent supercapacitor performance, and its specific capacitance can reach 237.5 F g −1 . When the current density reaches 10 A g −1 , it has good cycle stability (the capacitance retention after 1000 charge and discharge is 88.53% of the initial capacitance value, which is better than pure PPy-60.76% and PPy/rGO-C-71.84%). The excellent capacitance performance, good-looking micro-morphology and simple synthesis method of the PPy/N-PCM provide the possibility for its commercialization.

Abstract:Graphene/polypyrrole (PPy) composite film was prepared by simple electrodeposition of graphite oxide and pyrrole mixture under acid conditions. The morphology, composition, and electronic structure of the composites were characterized by using transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Based on the fast redox property of PPy and high conductivity of graphene, the prepared composite film could be constructed to a supercapacitor device directly. The electrochemical performances of the supercapacitor were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge–discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The composites showed better electrochemical performances than the individual components. A high specific capacitance of 335 F·g $^{-1}$ was obtained with the capacitance retention of 85% after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1 A·g$^{-1}$ by charge–discharge analysis between 0 and +1.0 V. The enhanced specific capacitance and cycling life implied a synergistic effect of graphene and PPy.

Abstract:Facile one‐step electrochemical polymerization of a novel graphitic oxide/polypyrrole/2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulfonic acid composite on carbon fabric was developed for supercapacitor applications. In the aqueous electrolyte, the operating voltage reached 2.2 V, resulting in high‐energy density, power efficiency, and long cyclic capacity. Summary Facile one‐step electrochemical synthesis of a novel graphitic oxide/polypyrrole/2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulfonic acid composite on carbon fabric were described for development of an efficient positive electrode for supercapacitor applications. The 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulfonate monomers behave as dopant in 3D polypyrrole network formed by synergetic coupling with graphitic oxide. Their free acrylic groups interact with each other to form polymer‐hydrogel‐layer on the external surface that facilitate transport of aqueous electrolyte ions inside of the electrode. The most efficient electrode material was synthesized by tuning dopant concentration at 0.01 M. The full‐cell assembled using the composite electrode and graphite counter electrode works at 2.2 V in 3 M NaCl solution that equals to the highest values achieved yet for aqueous supercapacitors. This cell has a capacitance as high as 698.8 F g−1 at 5 mV s−1 and preserves its initial value even after 10 000 continuous CV cycles at 1000 mV s−1. It also exhibits a high‐energy density of 446.1 W h kg−1 at a power density of 366.7 W kg−1, and it is still 65.2 W h kg−1 at 18.3 kW kg−1. The asymmetric capacitor with 1 × 1 cm2 area successfully lit a red light‐emitting diode.

Abstract:Redox-active graphene/polypyrrole composite aerogel with well-defined 3D porous structure are prepared by one-step hydrothermal method using p-benzoquinone (BQ) and humic acid (HA) as redox-active agent and dopant. The synergistic effect of BQ and HA enables the successful ordered polymerization of pyrrole, the reduction of graphene oxide and the effective doping effect of the composite aerogel. The constructed well-defined 3D porous structure decorated by redox-active assembly of BQ and HA is able to boost the fast ion diffusion rate and faradaic reaction at the surface of the composite aerogel electrode. The prepared GBAP-2 (mass ratio of HA:BQ ≈ 1.6) aerogel exhibits superior specific capacitance of 528 F/g at 1A/g and good rate capability. The assembled hybrid device demonstrated maximum energy of 67.75 Wh kg −1 at 900 W kg −1 and good cyclic and flexible stability, suggesting a good candidate for use in flexible electronics.

Abstract:Improving the morphological structure of active materials is a reliable strategy for the fabrication of high-performance supercapacitor electrodes. In this study, we introduce a feasible approach to constructing the graphene/polypyrrole (PPy) composite film implanted onto the current collector through a two-step electrochemical deposition method utilizing MnO2 as an intermediary template. The reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hydrogel film is first hydrothermally grown on a carbon cloth (CC) substrate to obtain a porous rGO@CC electrode on which MnO2 is electrodeposited. Then the as-prepared rGO/MnO2@CC electrode is subjected to the electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole, with MnO2 acting as an oxidizing template to facilitate the oxidative polymerization of pyrrole, ultimately yielding an rGO/PPy composite film on CC. The PPy synthesized via this methodology exhibits a distinctive interconnected structure, resulting in superior electrochemical performance compared with the electrode with PPy directly electrodeposited on rGO@CC. The optimized electrode achieves an impressive specific capacitance of 583.6 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 and retains 83% of its capacitance at 20 A g-1, with a capacitance loss of only 9.5% after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. The corresponding all-solid-state supercapacitor could provide a high energy density of 22.5 Wh kg-1 and a power density of 4.6 kW kg-1, with a capacitance retention of 82.7% after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. Furthermore, the device also demonstrates good flexibility performance upon bending at 90 and 180°. This work presents an innovative method for the preparation of carbon material/conducting polymer electrodes with specific structural characteristics and superior performance.

Abstract:Supercapacitors have become one of the most popular energy-storage devices for high power density and fast charging/discharging capability. Polyaniline is a class of conductive polymer materials with ultra-high specific capacitance, and the excellent mechanical properties will play a key role in the research of flexible supercapacitors. The synergistic effect between polyaniline and graphene is often used to overcome their respective inherent shortcomings, thus the high-performance polyaniline-graphene based nanocomposite electrode materials can be prepared. The development of graphene-polyaniline nanocomposites as electrode materials for supercapacitors depends on their excellent microstructure design. However, it is still difficult to seek a balance between graphene performance and functionalization to improve the weak interfacial interaction between graphene and polyaniline. In this manuscript, the latest preparation methods, research progress and research results of graphene-polyaniline nanocomposites on supercapacitors are reviewed, and the optimization of electrode structures and performances is discussed. Finally, the prospect of graphene-polyaniline composites is expected.

Abstract:A polypyrrole-reduced graphite oxide core-shell composite was facilely fabricated through electrostatic interactions and pi-pi accumulation. This novel composite shows remarkable performance as an electrode material for supercapacitors, with a high specific capacitance of 557 Fg(-1) at a current density of 0.5 Ag-1, and retains a high value after 1000 charge-discharge processes. The maximum energy density of the fabricated supercapacitor based on the mass of active electrodes is calculated to be 49.5 W h kg(-1) and 33.3 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 0.22 kW kg(-1) and 6.06 kW kg(-1), the improved capacitance might be mainly ascribed to higher conductivity and more crumpled surface of the composite.

Abstract:Reduced-graphene oxide/polypyrrole nanofiber (RGO/PPy-Nf) nanocomposite has been prepared as the electrode material of the supercapacitor. This nanocomposite was prepared via a facile two-step process, including exfoliation and reduction of graphene oxide by microwave irradiation (MRGO) and in situ polymerization pyrrole onto it. The morphological, structural, and porosity characterizations of this nanocomposite were shown the proper formation of RGO/PPy-Nf composite with a mesoporous structure. The high specific capacitance of 277 F g−1 was obtained for the RGO/PPy-Nf nanocomposite at a constant current density of 1 A g−1 in a 1 M H2SO4 solution electrolyte. This nanocomposite revealed the highest energy density of 38.5 Wh kg−1 with a corresponding power density of 500 W kg−1, and the capacitive retention of 95% after 1000 cycles. In evaluating the samples by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the values of capacitor response time revealed that the dominant mechanism in pristine PPy and MRGO is faradaic reactions and electrical double-layer capacitance (EDLC), respectively, and both mechanisms play a role in the RGO/PPy-Nf nanocomposite. Also, the relaxation time investigation revealed this nanocomposite exhibit an ideal capacitive behavior at very low frequency.

Abstract:Graphene derivatives have great potential in the field of energy storage, because of their high specific surface area, great electrical conductivity, and stable electrochemical properties. For the graphene-based electrodes with a three-dimensional (3D) porous structure, the interlayer stacking of the graphene sheets largely limits their capacitive performance, and thus hinders their wide applications. In this work, we successfully developed a lightweight, freestanding and 3D porous reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) composite aerogel by incorporating the conducting polymer PEDOT:PSS into interconnected rGO networks through a facile, low-cost and all-water-processable two-step synthesis route. PEDOT:PSS covering on the rGO sheets was found to not only prevent the stacking of rGO sheets, but also greatly improve the ion accessibility and mechanical stability of this highly porous spongy meshwork. Due to the synergistic effect of rGO and PEDOT:PSS, the aerogel electrodes delivered a high gravimetric specific capacitance (471 F g−1 at 0.2 A g−1), an excellent rate capability, and a remarkable capacitance retention (98.71% over 20,000 cycles at 20 A g−1). Furthermore, the aerogel-based symmetric supercapacitor exhibited a wide potential window (0–1.4 V) and an excellent energy storage performance. A high energy density of 48.18 Wh kg−1 with the power density of 1.4 kW kg−1 at 0.5 A g−1, or an energy density of 32.67 Wh kg−1 corresponding to the great power density of 14,000 W kg−1 at 5 A g−1 was achieved. These results demonstrate the great potential of the rGO/PEDOT:PSS aerogel as an excellent electrode material for energy storage applications.

Abstract:The aim of this work was to prepare poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) electrodes from an electrolyte containing graphene oxide and sodium dodecyl sulfate or poly(4-styrenesulfonate) solutions. The synthesis was also carried out without the presence of graphene oxide. Two different electrode supports were used, glassy carbon and a thin layer of graphene oxide pre-deposited on glassy carbon. All poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) layers were synthesised by applying 1.0 V vs. saturated calomel electrode for 300 s. After synthesis, the electrode with graphene oxide support was additionally polarised at − 1.4 V vs. saturated calomel electrode in 0.1 mol dm −3 potassium chloride solution for 600 s to obtain reduced graphene oxide. In this way, electrodes with reduced graphene oxide were prepared. The prepared electrodes were used to assemble symmetric supercapacitors, which were tested by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The stability of the supercapacitors was determined by charging/discharging at constant current during 1000 cycles, maintaining the capacitance between 72% and 95%. The highest specific capacitance and energy values were 74.67 F g− 1 and 5.60 W h kg− 1 , respectively. The presence of graphene oxide in the synthesis solution or as support decreased the synthesis rate and resulted in a more compact layer with a lower specific capacitance value. However, the successful reduction of graphene oxide significantly improved the capacitive properties, making this electrode suitable for high-energy applications.

One-Step Fabrication of Integrated Graphene/Polypyrrole/Carbon Cloth Films for Supercapacitor Electrodes

Abstract:The facile and cost-effective preparation of supercapacitor electrodes is significant for the application of this kind of electrochemical energy-storing module. In this work, we designed a feasible strategy to fabricate a binary active material onto a current collector in one step. A colloidal mixture of graphene oxide and pyrrole layered on a carbon cloth could undergo a redox reaction through a mild hydrothermal process to yield a reduced graphene oxide/polypyrrole hydrogel film anchored onto the carbon cloth. The integrated electrode with the porous graphene/polypyrrole active material could be directly utilized as a freestanding working electrode for electrochemical measurements and the assembly of supercapacitor devices. The as-prepared electrode could achieve a high capacitance of 1221 mF cm-2 at 1 mA cm-2 (531 F g-1) with satisfactory cycling stability. The constructed symmetric supercapacitor with two optimal electrodes could provide an energy density of 70.4 μWh cm-2 (15.3 Wh kg-1). This work offers a feasible pathway toward the integration of graphene/conducting polymer composites as electrochemical electrodes.

Abstract:A facile method to prepare uniform polypyrrole (PPy) nanospheres is developed by using 3-chloroperbenzoic acid as oxidant, structure-induced reagent and dopant for polymerization of pyrrole without introducing extra acid, template and surfactant. The as-synthesized PPy nanospheres with an average diameter of 100-200 nm and conductivity about 10(-2) S cm(-1) are characterized by SEM, FTIR, UV-vis spectroscopy, XRD and elemental analysis in an effort to determine the identity of the nanospheres and the mechanism relevant to their formation and stabilization. Influences of experimental conditions on the morphology of the PPy nanospheres have been investigated. Via the high temperature pyrolyzation at 900 degrees C, the nitrogen-doped carbon nanospheres have been obtained from the PPy nanospheres precursors, which have a high conductivity of 10-100 S cm(-1), showing a good potential as the electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors due to their excellent electrochemical performance. Electrospray-Deposition of Graphene Electrodes: A Simple Technique to Build High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Here we report an electrostatic spray deposition method to prepare three-dimensional porous graphene electrodes for supercapacitor applications. The symmetric supercapacitor exhibits excellent specific capacitance (366 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) in 6 M KOH) and long cycle life (108% capacitance retention up to 40 000 cycles). Moreover, the energy densities of the organic and aqueous electrolyte based supercapacitors reach 22.9 and 8.1 Wh kg(-1) when the power densities are 119.2 and 15.4 kW kg(-1), respectively. Compared with the previously reported graphene based supercapacitors, the improved properties could be attributed to the excellent three-dimensional open porous electrode structure, which is favorable for the ion diffusion and electron transport. In addition, this method provides a simple electrode-fabrication route without the involvement of conducting additives and binders. It may find vast applications in thin and miniaturized energy storage scenarios.
