Abstract:Carbon nanofibers yarns (CNY) have been prepared by carbonizing twisted electrospun PAN nanofibers, which can be used as the electrode of fiber-shaped all-solid-state supercapacitor after depositing conductive polymer of polypyrrole (PPy) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) on their surface to form a core-shell structure (CNY@PPy@rGO). The flexible and binder-free fiber supercapacitors with PVA/H3PO4 gel electrolyte have a high specific capacitance (92.57 F/g, 80.46 F/cm3, 836.87 mF/cm2, and 111.46 mF/cm of CM, CV, CA, and CL, respectively, at the scan rate of 2 mV/s) thanks to the core-shell structure and synergistic effects of three conponents. It also shows high cycling performance with 86% capacitance retention after 10000 cycles with excellent flexibility and stability at different bending angles.

Abstract:Nanocellulose has become one of the most attractive matrix materials for flexible supercapacitors, owing to the high surface area, good mechanical properties and environmental friendliness. Herein, we developed electrode materials with high capacitance and mechanical flexibility through the in-situ synthesis of polypyrrole (PPy) in TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibril (TOCN)/sulfonated carbon nanotubes (SCNT) composite hydrogels. The TOCN/SCNT/PPy composite hydrogels were thus obtained via a bifunctional Fe3+ in-situ oxidation, showing high specific capacitance of 5299 mF/cm2 at a current density of 1 mA/cm2. Furthermore, the assembled symmetric TOCN-40SCNT-PPy solid-state supercapacitor exhibited outstanding capacitance of 375 mF/cm2 and electrochemical stability with 163.2 % capacitance retention at a current density of 1 mA/cm2 for 2500 cycles. These nanocellulose/carbon nanotube/polypyrrole hydrogels are thus promising in the fields of flexible solid-state supercapacitor with superior electrochemical performance.

Abstract:A lightweight, flexible, and highly efficient energy management strategy is a requisite for future flexible electronics. Herein, hollow polypyrrole/cellulose hybrid hydrogels featured with biphase porous structures, are firstly designed by in-situ implanting a hollow and continuous polypyrrole conducting network into porous cellulose hydrogels. Such hollow hybrid hydrogels show good mechanical strength and flexibility, enabling its ability to bear severe mechanical deformation without structural damage. Within the hybrid hydrogel, cellulose hydrogel acts as an interior electrolyte reservoir to host movable ions, biphase porous structure offers path for electrolyte ions, and hollow polypyrrole network is responsible for the electrochemical performance. As a result, a symmetrical supercapacitor assembled with the hollow hybrid hydrogels delivers optimized capacitive properties with a high specific capacitance, a good rate capability, and an enhanced cycling stability. Moreover, no evident loss in capacitance of the device is observed even bended at 180°. This work provides a design of flexible, low-cost, environmental-friendly and high-performance electrode materials for energy conversion and storage systems.

Abstract:In this study, the treated carbon clothes with polypyrrole (PPy) nanowires (TCC@PPyW) were fabricated by template‐free electrochemical deposition of pyrrole in the presence of sodium citrate dihydrate and sodium perchlorate. The morphologies and electrochemical performances of the samples were studied by scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge–discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The morphologies of PPy nanostructure were controlled by regulating interfacial pH, deposition time and concentration of sodium perchlorate. The PPy nanorods were generated with the aid of water oxidation when the pH of pyrrole solution was 7.9, and the PPy nanowires could be obtained by increasing the deposition time or the concentration of sodium perchlorate. The resulted PPy nanowires were about 100 nm in diameter and up to 600 nm in length. The TCC@PPyW electrodes provided rich contact area for electrolyte, which facilitated the rapid delivery of electric charge. As a result, the TCC@PPyW electrode exhibited a high areal specific capacitance of 841.2 mF/cm2 at 0.4 mA/cm2 and a high energy density of 420.6 μWh/cm2 at a power density of 0.2 mW/cm2. An all‐solid‐state flexible symmetric supercapacitor without any binder, incorporated with TCC@PPyW as electrodes and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)‐LiCl gel as gel electrolyte was also reported. Abstract:Electrode materials play a crucial role in determining the comprehensive performance of the constructed flexible supercapacitors. Herein, a simple synthesis method was reported to fabricate soft polypyrrole (PPy) hydrogels with in situ-doped sulfonated graphene quantum dots (sGQD). The sulfonic acid groups rimming the graphene quantum dots (GQD) can protonate the nitrogen groups of PPy and form electrostatic interactions, leading to PPy chains cross-linking to form a three-dimensional network which can be gelated into a hydrogel. It is found that sGQD can form transport channels to facilitate fast solvated ion diffusion during charge and discharge process that can contribute to the performance improvement. Since both electrochemical activity and excellent conductivity are reserved, the as-prepared PPy/sGQD-160 hydrogel electrode exhibits an extremely higher specific capacitance (641 F g−1 at current density of 0.2 A g−1) and superior cycle stability compared with PPy hydrogel. In addition, the electrochemical performance of PPy/sGQD hydrogels is gradually improved with the increment of sGQD, which can be ascribed to the high conductivity of sGQD dopant. These results indicate that the obtained PPy/sGQD hydrogels can be considered as a promising electrode material for flexible high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Smart and flexible supercapacitors are of ever increasing importance for energy-storage devices. Herein, a simple and effective strategy to make a supercapacitor in a "flexible" and "electrochromic" way was based on the direct and convenient immobilization of a polyaniline (PANI) hydrogel onto a porous carbon nanotube (CNT) film. The resultant symmetric all-solid-state supercapacitor showed a favorable specific capacitance of 315 F g(-1) and a relatively high cycling stability (92% capacitance retention after 1500 cycles). The bending test indicated that the obtained supercapacitor was flexible and its performance was only decreased by less than 7.0% after 150 bending cycles with a bending angle of 180 degrees. Furthermore, the supercapacitor displayed a rapid and reversible chromatic transition between different working stages, and its level of stored energy could be quickly determined by the naked eye in a predictable and noticeable manner. This work may open a simple and convenient avenue for the fabrication of smart, flexible and all-solid-state supercapacitors.

Abstract:Conducting polymer hydrogels with high conductivity, excellent electroactivity, and good mechanical strength are desirable for the design of high-performance energy storage devices. However, they suffer from the issue of low porosity, which hinders electrolyte diffusion and leads to poor rate performance. In this work, we developed a one-step, in situ chemical polymerization approach to fabricate a porous pure polypyrrole hydrogel (PPH) with a desirable nanostructure via an ice-templating strategy. This simple synthetic approach offers the PPH tunable porosity, ultrahigh conductivity, and good mechanical strength. Owing to these notable advantages, functioning as a supercapacitor electrode, PPH displays a high specific capacitance of 265 F g–1 (1961 mF cm–2) at 1.35 A g–1 (10 mA cm–2) and maintains 85% capacitance retention even up to 67.6 A g–1 (500 mA cm–2). We also found that PPH without an ice-templated nanostructure possesses poor rate capability due to slow and blocked electrolyte diffusion because of the less-porous nanostructure. This facile, ice-templated strategy to structurally design a porous nanostructure for high-rate performance opens up the possibility for advanced energy storage applications.

Abstract:The growing demands of flexible and wearable electronic devices boost the rapid development of flexible supercapacitors (FSCs). Conductive hydrogels are considered to be one type of promising electrode materials for FSCs due to their good processability and electrochemical properties. However, the poor mechanical properties of conductive hydrogels hinder their practical applications. Building robust cross-linked network structures is a feasible way to enhance their mechanical properties. Herein, the double-network polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-polypyrrole (PPy) conductive hydrogels are synthesized by the freeze-thaw and in-situ polymerization method. The double-network structure not only enhances mechanical properties of the hydrogels, but also promotes their electrolyte ion transport. The maximum elongation at break of the optimized PVA-PPy hydrogels can reach 156.4%, and the specific capacitance is 1718.7 mF cm-2 at 0.5 mA cm-2. Furthermore, the energy densities of the symmetrical PVA-PPy FSCs are 46.7 and 13.3 & mu;Wh cm-2 at power densities of 200.0 and 2000.0 & mu;W cm-2. Such excellent electrochemical performances and mechanical properties make the synthesized PVA-PPy hydrogels a promising candidate for FSCs.

Abstract:Hydrogels with high ionic conductivity consisting of a cross-linked polymer network swollen in water are very promising to be used as an electrolyte for all-solid-state supercapacitors. However, there are rather few flexible supercapacitors using ionic conducting hydrogel electrolytes reported to date. In this work, highly flexible and ionic conducting polyacrylamide hydrogels were synthesized through a simple approach. On using the ionic hydrogels as the electrolyte, the resulting supercapacitors not only exhibited a high specific capacitance but also showed a long self-discharge time (over 10 hours to the half of original open-circuit voltage) and a low leakage current. These newly-developed all-solid-state supercapacitors can be bent, knot, and kneaded for 5000 cycles without performance decay, suggesting excellent flexibility and mechanical stability. These all-solid-state supercapacitors can also be easily tailored into strip-like supercapacitors without a short circuit, which provides an efficient approach to fabricate wearable energy storage devices.

Abstract:Elastic conducting hydrogel is a promising candidate for the construction of high-performance electronic devices because of the unique mechanical and electrical features of conducting hydrogel with three-dimensional network. But conducting polymers are considered to be inherently rigid due to the conjugated chains in the macromolecular structures, leading to poor processability. Making conducting polymer hydrogels elastic by a rational and facile design is paramount for the construction of remarkable electronic device. Here, elastic polypyrrole (PPy) hydrogels reinforced by TEMPO-oxidized cellulose are obtained in the presence of methyl orange and FeCl3 during the static polymerization and self-assembly process. The as-prepared hydrogels exhibit one-dimensional nanotubes-based porous networks with electric conductivity, high elasticity and mechanical stability. With this special design, the symmetric quasi-solid-state supercapacitor fabricated by PPy hydrogels reinforced by TEMPO-oxidized cellulose electrodes deliver good electrochemical performance and can be connected in series as an electronic circuit to light up a LED bulb. All of the characteristics of the resulting PPy hydrogels reinforced by TEMPO-oxidized cellulose open an avenue for potential energy storage applications.

Abstract:High-performance, flexible reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-polypyrrole (PPy)/nanoporous gold (NPG) electrodes are prepared by a facile electrochemical interfacial polymerization method using NPG as the substrate. Owing to the synergistic effect of three-dimensional (3D) porous architecture and superior electrical conductivity, the prepared electrode not only exhibits a good areal capacitance (232 mF/cm2), but also shows high volumetric capacitance (555.6 F/cm3). Hence, an all-solid-state supercapacitor assembled with rGO-PPy/NPG electrodes exhibits a high energy density of 238.8 mW h/cm3. Besides, this flexible supercapacitor also shows excellent cycling stability with retention of 91% with respect to the initial capacitance after 2000 galvanostatic charge–discharge cycles. This work offers a novel avenue for designing flexible supercapacitor.

Abstract:An all-in-one flexible and all-solid-state matrix conductive hydrogel electrode with high capacitance has been effectively generated in this work. Using multi-dimensional materials collaborative construction, one-dimensional (1D) polypyrrole (PPy) nanofibers and two-dimensional (2D) reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanolayers are incorporated into a three-dimensional (3D) polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix. The cross network of PVA effectively prevents PPy aggregation and inhibits the collapse of the PPy skeleton, while is uniformly distributed and immobilized the RGO layer within the three-dimensional matrix of physically cross-linked PVA. This further enhances the overall material's mechanical properties and the conductivity. The confined growth PPy provides certain capacitive properties to the material. The hydrogen bonding and synergistic effect between each component make the PVA/RGO/PPy-0.5 hydrogel electrode to have an excellent area specific capacitance of 483.3 mF/cm 2 at 1 mA/cm 2 , along with outstanding flexibility and 91.2 % high cycle stability after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. By employing a layer-gelation strategy, an all-in-one flexible and all-solid-state supercapacitor set has a high energy density of 44.6 μWh/cm 2 and high cycling stability of 94.8 % after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles. Moreover, there is no significant capacitance loss when supercapacitor bent at various angles, demonstrating the great potential of the feasible flexible supercapacitors with high capacitance and deformability made possible through multi-dimensional materials collaborative construction.

Fabrication of a flexible porous polypyrrole film with a 3D micro-nanostructure and its electrochemical properties

Abstract:Flexible energy storage systems have become attractive alternatives for applications in wearable energy storage and sensor devices. This study reports a simple electro-polymerization method for the fabrication of PPy films coated on PPy nanotubes (PPy NTs), which are binding-free, self-standing, and could be used as a flexible electrode for supercapacitors. With optimized kinetics for ion transportation, the mass specific capacitance of the flexible porous PPy films can be elevated to 1.36 F cm −2 at a charging/discharging rate of 2 mA cm −2 (0.45 A g −1 ). The mass specific capacitance of the flexible porous PPy films reaches 6.5 times as large as that of compact PPy films at a scan rate of 20 mV s −1 . Furthermore, due to the large free space for volume change, the capacitance fading of the flexible porous PPy films is less than 3% after 10 000 cycles. This novel design provides an efficient method to synthesize high-performance, flexible and low-cost materials used in supercapacitors.

Abstract:High electrochemical surface area (ECSA) is the precondition for high performance of flexible supercapacitors, but remains a considerable obstacle. Because of the lower fluidity of hydrogel polymer electrolyte (HPE, generally utilized to fabricate flexible supercapacitors) than aqueous electrolyte (AE, used in traditional supercapacitors), it is difficult to infill a porous electrode with HPE completely, leading to a low ECSA between electrode materials and HPE. In this work, the structures of the polyaniline nanowires are designed to increase the ECSA. In comparison with nanowire network structure, the patulous structure of the polyaniline nanowire arrays is beneficial to increase the ECSA. The polyaniline nanowire arrays show a specific capacitance of 373.6 F g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) with the HPE, which is comparable to that with the AE at 0.1 A g(-1) (376.6 F g(-1)). Flexible supercapacitors based on the polyaniline nanowire arrays exhibit similar performances under flat, folded, and twisted conditions, demonstrating their high potential application in flexible electrochemical energy storage devices.

Abstract:The close integration of an active layer with a current collector is of significance for the properties of supercapacitor electrodes. Herein, we propose a novel and feasible strategy where graphene hydrogels are implanted onto the carbon cloth on which polypyrrole is electrodeposited to obtain specially constructed electrodes. Particularly, the graphene oxide colloid drop-coated on the current collector undergoes a mild hydrothermal reduction to form a graphene hydrogel film implanted onto the carbon cloth. The integrated graphene/carbon cloth film with a porous graphene framework effectively contributes to the polypyrrole loading and endows the as-prepared electrode with enhanced electrochemical properties. The optimized electrode presents superb specific capacitances (522.3 F g–1 at 0.7 A g–1, 1462.5 mF cm–2 at 2 mA cm–2), with satisfactory rate capability, cycling lifetime, and bending performance. The corresponding device can achieve a desirable energy density (88.67 μWh cm–2, 15.8 Wh kg–1) and power density (14.65 mW cm–2, 2.64 kW kg–1). The design method reported in this paper could provide a new pathway toward constructing high-performing electrodes based on graphene materials.

Abstract:Integration of conductive polymers with flexible substrate to construct an electronically conductive and mechanically flexible electrode is of great significance for a flexible energy storage device. This work reports a facile method to prepare coral-like poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanotube arrays on textile carbon fibers (TCs) for high-rate supercapacitor application. The ZnO nanowires grown on TCs serve as a sacrificial template. Electrochemical polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene followed by template removal of ZnO nanowires yields a hybrid composed of PEDOT nanotubes vertically grown on TC (). The strong interfacial interactions between nanotubes and substrate afford the hybrid with superior mechanical flexibility and high conductivity (790 S m–1). More importantly, the tubular structure enables ∼88% PEDOT to be involved in the reversible redox reaction, delivering a specific capacitance 184 F g–1 in 1.0 M H2SO4 electrolyte with 88% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles. A solid-state supercapacitor with PVA-H2SO4 as gel electrode exhibits a high-rate capability with a relaxation time constant (τ0 = 0.96 s) very close to that in aqueous H2SO4 electrolyte (τ0 = 0.87 s). Abstract:Herein, a conducting copolymer hydrogel of poly(aniline-co-pyrrole)/polyvinyl alcohol (PACP/PVA) was prepared by in-situ polymerization of aniline and pyrrole in aqueous solution of phytic acid and PVA. This PACP/PVA hydrogel can be used directly as self-standing electrode for supercapacitors. The hydrogel electrode delivers high electrochemical capacitance (633.5 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1, 1267 mF cm−2 at 1 mA cm−2) and excellent cycling stability (86.4% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles). In particular, the remarkable flexibility of the PACP/PVA hydrogel electrode is demonstrated by 81.7% of initial capacitance retention after repeated bending 500 cycles. Based on PACP/PVA hydrogel electrode and a typical PVA/H2SO4 hydrogel electrolyte, an all-hydrogel-state supercapacitor was assembled. The supercapacitor demonstrates high areal capacitance of 317 mF cm−2 at 1 mA cm−2 and energy density of 44 µWh cm−2 (22 Wh kg−1) at 250 µW cm−2 (125 W kg−1). This work provides a new direction for fabricating self-standing flexible hydrogel electrode materials for smart and wearable devices.
