Abstract:In changing times older art-museum values are coming under challenge and new emphasis is being placed on museum-audience relationships. The professional development of new communicative approaches in art museums can be seen as a form of action research. Older modernist models for communication based on the transmission of authoritative subject-based facts to a mass of passive receivers are being superseded by new approaches that acknowledge 'active audiences', constructivist and interpretist learning theories and the complexities of cultural politics. New roles for art museum professionals, the concept of differentiated audiences, the intervention of new voices and the exposition of new narratives offer possibilities for the reconceptualisation of art museums that are rooted in late 19th-century modernist culture.

Abstract:This article focuses on change processes taking place in one important Chinese museum, the Shaanxi History Museum in Xi'an. It is based on field research from 2002, conducted within the ‘Strengthening the Shaanxi History Museum’ project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Department of Cooperation and Development. Important change processes emerge from the analysis, such as sustained economic development; new trends of tourism (and cultural tourism in particular), with an increase in both domestic and international tourist flows. More interesting from an organizational point of view, a decisive recovery of professional curatorship values seems to have emerged in recent years, within a more general process of administrative reforms of individual organizations. Some of the contradictions characterizing these processes are also investigated.

Abstract:Traditional museum space design is generally limited to cost and engineering volume, and follows the conventional unified design process of large-scale space fixtures, isolating the design contents of space hard decoration and internal soft decoration and display, and even flood lighting intelligence, lacking unified overall consideration and response. The disjointed design in the early stage led to a large number of space contradictions in the exhibition placement and actual use and operation after the completion of the hard installation and delivery. The intervention of new media art changes the traditional exhibition form. At the same time, the traditional public space design process also begins to change because the exhibition activity of new media art forms has many requirements such as technology, process, material, sound and light, and even environmental psychological effect on the space form and scale. Based on case studies of different characteristics, this paper summarizes the systematic design methods of new media art's involvement in the hard installation of museum exhibition space from three dimensions of spatial layout, spatial form and spatial scope.

Abstract:This article deals with selected contemporary art projects that have involved the collaboration of heterogeneous actors in the framework of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, which started in 2000 in southern Niigata Prefecture. Originally initiated as a revitalization plan to tackle depopulation and obsolescence in this vast rural area, the triennal has been envisaged and implemented by the Tokyo-based commercial gallery Art Front Gallery (AFG) in cooperation with municipal and prefectural agencies. I will examine how the collaboration between local residents, non-local artist(s), and volunteers has evolved in three projects that were all carried out in mountain villages. The first project entitled “Ubusuna no Ie” was initiated by a Tokyo-based editor and his staff for the 2006 festival, involving the restoration of an abandoned house, which now serves as a space to exhibit pottery. As a result of the project, the village women have started a restaurant in the house, which has been an enormous success, attracting hundreds of visitors per day in August 2009. The second project implemented in 2006 involved the cooperation of a British artist group called Grizedale Arts with the locals in a secluded marginal village called Tōge in order to find ways to revitalize the village. The third ongoing artwork is concerned with promoting a brand of traditional Japanese paper (washi) by combining it with contemporary design and involves the cooperation between the vernacular washi production site and a Yokohama-based artist. Introducing a model to examine the development of kyōdō [literally: “working together”] by defining various stages of cooperation, the key issues I intend to explore are as follows: (1) What are the main factors that influence the implementation of the project, the intensity of cooperation, and its success? (2) What stages do we observe in the individual cases discussed here?

Abstract:This article aims to describe the child-friendly management of Chiharu Shiota's exhibition space at MACAN museum. Museum collections are a medium of information for the audiences who see them. One of the museum's audience groups is children. The management of collections in an exhibition is an important factor in directing visitors, especially children, to get the right information when understanding and learning about museum collections. The management of museum collections involves visual media outside the collection objects. The visual media in question is labeling, which is a medium that contains a variety of information about complementary information from the collection of artifacts on display at the Museum. In the context of a child-friendly museum, labelling has a major role in guiding a child when viewing and understanding a collection object. The research was conducted using direct observation method to the field. Researchers observed and documented the visual medias that accompany the collection objects and how to place them in a MACAN museum showroom. The results of the research are expected to be an alternative framework for managing the collection of an exhibition in a museum in the context of a child-friendly museum. This is in line with the museum's function as an out-of-school educational facility for children

Abstract:Abstract Museums serve as repositories and exhibitors of cultural artifacts, playing a vital role in international cultural exchange. In the digital era, advancements in Artificial Intelligence and big data offer innovative modes of translation and mediation, enhancing the content and diversifying channels through which Chinese museum culture is presented globally. Museum culture display embodies a multimodal discourse, primarily reliant on imagery within its information system. This study explores the integration of new technologies to facilitate multimodal mediation in the translation and communication of Chinese museum culture. The investigation involves an in-depth analysis of human–computer interaction guidelines, precise service delivery based on machine learning, and relevant Artificial Intelligence corpora. The research demonstrates how Artificial Intelligence mediation can promote the multimodal translation and communication of diverse aspects of Chinese museum cultures. Specifically, it highlights three key approaches based on specific usage scenarios and objectives, including a chatbot designed for smaller indoor spaces such as museums, emphasizing on-site interactive experiences; new media and big data applications tailored for large outdoor cultural and educational venues, prioritizing tour experiences and visitor engagement; and online VR/AR experiential facilities serving remote visitors unable to physically visit cultural and educational sites. The integration of Artificial Intelligence aims to realize multilingual and multidimensional mediation, enriching the expression of Chinese museum culture by rendering abstract content visually, animating text, and augmenting images, allowing the audience to fully engage with China’s cultural heritage through auditory, visual, olfactory, and tactile sensory experiences. This research aims to offer valuable insights to museums and relevant government tourism management agencies, contributing to an improved translation and communication impact of Chinese museum culture.

Abstract:Abstract The aim of my presentation is to introduce a brief history of anthropological studies in Japan, particularly focusing on the associations, museums, research projects and textbooks. As for associations, I will describe about the Anthropological Society of Nippon (founded in 1884), the Japanese Society of Ethnology (founded in 1934) and its renamed association, the Japanese Society of Cultural Anthropology (since 2004). JASCA has approximately 2000 members. Regarding museums, I will pick up mainly National Museum of Ethnology (Minpaku, founded in 1974), as well as Little World Museum of Man (founded in 1983) and National Ainu Museum ( Upopoy , founded in 2020). With regard to research projects, special research projects and inter-university research projects of Minpaku and panels of JASCA conferences are major targets of analysis. Lastly, I can cite at least 50 textbooks for students and several encyclopedias on anthropology. I will also show the variety of anthropological publications and popular topics in the contemporary book market.

Abstract:Professional associations provide resources to support members' career development and facilitate ways for members to engage with and learn from one another. This article describes Medical Library Association (MLA) activities related to the revision of professional competencies and the restructuring of the organization's communities during the past twenty-five years. Grounded in MLA's Platform for Change, the MLA competency statement underwent two revisions with core themes remaining consistent. Major efforts went into rethinking the structure of MLA communities, and it became a strategic goal of the association. Numerous groups spent considerable time guiding the changes in MLA's community structure. Sections and special interest groups were transformed into caucuses. Domain hubs were established to facilitate project coordination across caucuses and create more leadership opportunities for MLA members, but their implementation did not meet expectations. Member engagement and leadership are ongoing challenges for MLA. The next twenty-five years will undoubtedly see additional revisions to the competencies and continued iterations of the community structure.

Abstract:As an effective means of cultural communication and a medium for collaboration and exchange, archival exhibitions have proved a growing phenomenon unique to this industry. Instead of remaining a cultural event, the archival exhibition now serves to promote cross-cultural, cross-border and cross-industry collaboration. Exhibitions connect us to the past and the future, celebrate common values, share experiences, improve the national and urban image and showcase the magnificence of cultural diversity. Shanghai Municipal Archives has been making successful and meaningful attempts in this regard. Abstract:In Japan, CLIL instruction falls under a soft-CLIL approach, content serving as secondary to language instruction. Furthermore, assessment in classrooms in Japan is oftentimes limited to assessing the product summatively. In the paper, we argue for the value of focusing on content in CLIL activities and assessing the process with the goal to promote learning. The present small-scale study at a Japanese university explored how learners (<i>n </i>= 6) used multimodal mediational means to build their conceptual understanding of 'Earth breathing' in order to create a presentation on it for a general English course. The further goal was to explore how inferences made from assessing this process of learners co-constructing their understanding can benefit the formative assessment of the outcome of their collaboration. We analysed learners' face-to-face classroom interaction and forum posts using mediated action as the unit of analysis. The findings revealed that through building on multimodal mediational means, learners were able to build their conceptual understanding and use academic language <i>with</i> this understanding. Deeper insights into learner performance were obtained from assessing the process of their collaboration. We will discuss the implications of the findings for English as a foreign language (EFL) and CLIL classrooms in Japan and beyond.

Rhizomatic Encounters With Inter/Transmedia Art: A Pedagogy for Learning and Teaching Experiential Contemporary Art

Abstract:Teaching and learning through contemporary art has gained validity as a powerful and effective pedagogy in contemporary art education practice. In this article, we highlight characteristics of contemporary art and rhizomatic learning theory, and then we propose a pedagogical model that combines them for teaching and learning through experiential contemporary art. We also explain how to implement this model by showing examples of students’ rhizomatic encounters with inter/transmedia art created by Taiwanese artist teams. As the artworks offered present moments as sites of learning or places in process, students were triggered by the intersection of sounds and visuals and recalled their memories along with relevant themes; they then re/created personal meanings and/or new knowledge. Thus, the proposed pedagogy model with the implementation guidelines (autonomy, documentation, and group discussion of collective rhizomatic learning artifacts) is effective. Strategies and challenges for implementing this model in art education are recommended and discussed.

Abstract:In recent years, generating social impact through less conventional curatorial practices has become a primary target and a remit among contemporary and modern art museums in Europe. These particular curatorial practices have involved three characteristics: formulating a new narrative for collection display; involving artists, designers and architects in the creation of these curatorial narratives; and developing forms of institutional engagement with the public. Modern and contemporary art museums are increasingly rethinking the potential role of exhibitions and public programming initiatives to engage substantively with the audience, formulating curatorial research questions that hold an ethical drive. The paper examines and analyses how, in the past few years, ethics has had a strong influence on curatorial practices, leading to new forms of institutional engagement that have fostered social impact. Recently, museum ethics have been reconsidered in the light of more dynamic museum programming, which has ensured the opportunity for all—from artists to the public—to engage with the work of the museum. This paper analyses the influence of ethics on curatorial practice and the features characterising curatorial ethics as a form of institutional engagement shaping either curatorial practice, research questions or research methodologies. Specifically, it investigates Tate Liverpool's curatorial initiatives that have demonstrated how, through different forms of institutional engagement, the museum produces social impact while achieving a new ethical role.
Interweaving Multiple Contexts for Objects in Museum Exhibitions: a Contextual Approach

Abstract:This study explores how to recontextualise objects in exhibitions to provide a bridge between the objects and visitors in museums by revealing two important strategies, which include establishing specific (sub)themes and frameworks as well as organising objects in groups. First, exhibit themes (reflecting exhibit frameworks), gateway objects, and exhibit atmospheres can be strategically combined to recontextualise objects. Second, objects either associated with or beyond spatio-temporal proximity can be grouped together in exhibit context. Both strategies reconstruct the micro, macro, and/or specific dimension(s) of objects' contexts, weaving together visitors' personal and social contexts to enhance their engagement with the objects. This study is based on fieldwork from thirty-two Dutch museums, a series of semi-structured interviews, and direct observation. The paper argues that using objects' original context is an important source for increasing the creativity involved with curating museum exhibitions.

Abstract:In the context of the "New Liberal Arts," the talent cultivation model for Japanese language programs in higher education faces both new challenges and opportunities. The "New Liberal Arts" promotes core principles such as interdisciplinary integration, innovation and practice orientation, and the cultivation of comprehensive qualities, driving profound transformations in the education sector. As a language discipline, Japanese studies must innovate upon traditional foundations to meet the contemporary demand for multifaceted and application-oriented talent. This paper analyzes the current state of Japanese language talent cultivation, reveals existing issues, and proposes corresponding optimization strategies. The research finds that curriculum design needs to enhance interdisciplinary content integration, teaching methods should focus on interaction and practical application, faculty development requires urgent improvement, and practical training and internships must be reinforced. Additionally, the enhancement of students' comprehensive abilities should be woven throughout the entire educational process. By exploring these aspects, this study aims to provide references for the reform of Japanese language education in higher education, supporting the development of high-quality Japanese professionals with an international perspective, innovative capability, and practical skills.
Translating multimodal texts in space: A case study of St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art

Abstract:Multimodality has received considerable critical attention in Translation Studies over the past decades. However, how translations interact with or within three-dimensional material space is still under-researched. This article proposes to use the study of geosemiotics (Scollon & Scollon, 2003) as the theoretical framework within which to explore this new territory. The case study was carried out at the St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art in Glasgow. The multimodal analysis divides museum space into four ranks: the museum surroundings, the museum building, the museum exhibition and the museum objects. The findings reveal that the translated exhibition texts interact with the four ranks of spaces to consistently minimize the narratives of Christian heritage in Glasgow and manifest a multi-religious and multi-ethnic Scottish identity. This study demonstrates how the (non-)provision of translations has the potential to influence the construction of in-place meaning in the multimodal museum space.

Abstract:Wu Changshuo’s “Yu-Gu-Wei-Tu与古為徒” Chinese Plaque, on the wall in the area of Oriental arts collection in Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston, have been thought Okakura Tenshin, who was the head of Chinese and Japanese arts collection of the museum, had asked Wu Changshuo to make it. However, in fact, Nagao Uzan (he was a Okakura’s friend and Sinologist who lived in Shanghai,) asked Wu Changshuo as his neighbor to write, and put it in a Black Lacquer. Then, he sent it to Okakura in Boston. Since Nagao was asked to be an advisory staff at MFA by Okakura at that time, he sent the plaque as an inaugural gift, I think. Okaura’s contributions at MFA have been highly regarded, but nobody have mentioned there was cooperation by a scholar named Nagao, who had a relationship with Wu Changshuo and inherited the orthodox of Sinology. The purpose of this report is analyzing his works and finding out the signification of the cultural exchange between Japan, China, and the US, which have achieved success in modern times. Abstract:Traditional science and technology museums are facing challenges in the rapid advancements in science and technology. These challenges include limited exhibition formats, outdated methods of conveying information, and inefficient resource management. However, with the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, there is an opportunity to overcome these challenges. Artificial intelligence technology, specifically in the field of natural language processing, has made significant progress in improving multilingual understanding and generative models. This advancement can greatly enhance the learning experience for diverse audiences. In addition, the development of computer vision technology focuses on scene understanding, video analysis, and visual inference. These advancements can provide a more immersive and engaging exhibition experience at science and technology museums. This paper aims to explore how traditional science and technology museums can integrate and redesign artificial intelligence technology to better meet the needs of their audiences. By doing so, it can improve the effectiveness of science and technology communication and enable museums to adapt more flexibly to the rapidly changing science and technology landscape. The findings of this study can provide strategic considerations and guidance for the future development of science and technology museums.
