Abstract:<span><b>Aim</b>: To assess the impact of practice patterns amongst global ophthalmologists during severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS Cov2) causing Corona virus disease (COVID-19) and understand the various modifications made to address emergency surgeries and practice needs.<b>Methods</b>: An online survey was sent to practicing ophthalmologists around the world through email, Whatsapp™ ListServ17.0™ (for pediatric ophthalmologists), WeChat™ (China) and ophthalmology associations (Indonesia, Philippines, Ireland). All queries were collected and categorized. Responses to the queries were given according to the recommendations by the Ophthalmology association. Practices ability to deal with the COVID were also classified according to country and type of access to PPE. Statistical analyses of the association between these data and queries, where appropriate were carried out.<b>Results</b>: One thousand nine hundred sixteen ophthalmologists were invited to participate in a survey between April 10<sup>th</sup> and April 30<sup>th</sup>, 2020 of which 1207 responded, which is a response rate of approximately 63%. The majority of respondents were from India, Indonesia, China, Singapore and the USA. Our study indicates a precipitous drop in surgical procedures with 46% (n = 538) ophthalmologists ceased to operate on their patients and almost 40% (n = 486) were doing less than 25% of their original number of surgeries. The intent to resume elective surgeries was a consideration in 41% (n = 495) after an evaluation of the situation and in consultation with professional bodies. More than 2/3 of the respondents (n = 703) made it a priority to use and mandate their patients to practice physical distancing, wearing masks, and hand dis-infection for protection to limit the spread of infection.<b>Conclusion</b>: This global survey provides a real-world assessment of diverse practices that were in various forms of "shut down mode" and circumstances with varying capabilities to deal with COVID. It is unprecedented that the collective wisdom for a curtailment of practice has had an enormous immediate and far reaching implications on the livelihoods of ophthalmologists, their staff, and their families. Nevertheless, ophthalmologists and their staff remain resilient and have adapted to these changes pragmatically.</span>

Abstract:The first quarter of 2020 gave light to a novel virus, Coronavirus 2019 (COVID‐19), causing a pandemic of unbridled proportions. The National Health Service in the United Kingdom issued guidance to ensure that capacity was increased in acute medical settings, to prepare for the surge of COVID‐19 cases. The Royal College of Ophthalmologists followed suit with guidance on the curtailment of all elective activity, aimed at protecting both patients and staff. Ophthalmology is one of the busiest outpatient specialities, and risk stratification of patients with appointments cancelled or on review lists was paramount to ensure there was no serious, permanent harm to sight. Our way of working, as we knew it, had to change in a short period of time. Local emergency eye care was changed from a walk in service, with the implementation of a strict triage protocol. Ophthalmologists, as well as Otorhinolaryngology colleagues, were identified as being at high risk of infection, due to the close proximity of clinical examination. The redesign of clinical areas to allow for social distancing, slit lamp barriers and personal protective equipment was all implemented. This time of relative pause has provided the opportunity to harness new ways of working, including the streamlining of services, reduction of backlog and the incorporation of telemedicine. Health preparedness is a new lexicon to Ophthalmology departments across the world, and it will now have to be stringently implemented in the ophthalmic setting.

Abstract:In 2022, UK guidance on the management and referral of primary angle closure (PAC) was published by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCO) and College of Optometrists (CoO) [1, 2]. There is a current paucity of data investigating community-based optometrists (CBO) knowledge of PAC and referral. This study aimed to investigate CBO's understanding of PAC risk factors, referral thresholds, and adoption of the guidelines. A prospective study was conducted at Moorfields Eye Hospital and was approved by the Research and Ethics Committee. UK registered CBO's working at least 2 days per week were recruited to complete an online survey that was open to responses between July and September 2023 that asked both structured and open-text questions.

Effect of COVID-19 related lockdown on ophthalmic practice and patient care in India: Results of a survey

Abstract:Purpose: In early 2020, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of the disease COVID-19, caused by a new variant of coronavirus 2019-nCoV as a global pandemic. The government of India ordered a nationwide lockdown for 21 days, limiting movement of people as a preventive measure. This survey was designed and conducted during the lockdown period to assess its effect on ophthalmic practice and patient care in India. Methods: An online survey was sent across to practicing Indian ophthalmologists across through various social media platforms. All valid responses were tabulated and analyzed. Results: A total of 1260 ophthalmologists responded to the survey. Most of the respondents (775/1260; 61.5%) were in private practice and 14.8% (187/1260) were affiliated to ophthalmic institutes. At the time of taking the survey, 72.5% of the respondents (913/1260) were not seeing any patients due to the lockdown. Of those who were still examining patients, 82.9% (287/347) were only seeing emergency cases, based on their own clinical judgement. The proportion of ophthalmologists in ophthalmic institutes, government and municipal hospitals (126/253;49.8%) who were still seeing patients was significantly higher ( P < 0.0001) than those in private practice (174/775;22.4%). Apart from emergencies such as trauma, retinal detachment, and endophthalmitis (81.8%), other surgeries that were still being performed included intravitreal injections (9.1%) and cataract surgeries (5.9%). Approximately, 77.5% (976/1260) of the respondents had begun telephonic/e-mail/video consultations or consultations over social media applications since the lockdown began. In addition, 59.1% (745/1260) felt that ophthalmologists were potentially at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19 compared to other specialties while examining patients. When asked about the resumption of practice upon easing off of the restrictions, 57.8% (728/1260) of the respondents said they were unsure of when to resume elective surgeries; furthermore, 62.8% (791/1260) were unsure about the preferred screening strategy or precautionary approach prior to resuming surgeries and were awaiting guidelines. Conclusion: Our survey shows that majority of ophthalmologists in India were not seeing patients during the COVID-19 lockdown, with near-total cessation of elective surgeries. Emergency services were still being attended to by 27.5% of ophthalmologists who responded. A large proportions of ophthalmologists had switched over to telephonic advice or other forms of telemedicine to assist patients. Most of the responding ophthalmologists were unclear about when and how to resume surgeries upon easing off of the COVID-19 related restrictions. Regulatory bodies should take note of this and issue appropriate guidelines regarding the same.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic loss of human life worldwide and presents a novel challenge to public health due to human-to-human transmission. People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported, ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Initially, the most common symptoms were fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, and sore throat. Recently, the disease has been known to involve different body parts, including eyes. The present paper will discuss the ocular manifestations seen in patients who tested positive for COVID-19. Since eye symptoms were the only presenting features in some of these patients, our aim is to highlight the importance of eye examination during this ongoing pandemic. Routine screening of patients by ophthalmologists during COVID-19 outbreaks may aid in patient care and management.

Abstract:Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and various types of ophthalmic manifestation of patients with COVID-19. Methods: This is a prospective observational study conducted on patients with SARS-Co-V-2 infection, at a dedicated tertiary COVID-19 hospital in South India from April 1 to July 31, 2020. At the time of their admission to the COVID hospital, demographic data such as name, age, sex was recorded. A thorough history regarding the onset, duration, progression, nature of symptoms and its associated factors, medication history, treatment history were elicited and documented. Ocular examination was performed under torchlight by an ophthalmologist posted for COVID duty. Further investigations including imaging were sought for, depending on clinical indications. Serial follow-up examinations of all patients were carried out every 72 hours or when patients complained of any ocular symptoms whichever earlier, until discharge. All relevant data were compiled and statistically analyzed. Results: A total of 2742 patients were examined. Of them, 1461 (53.28%) were males and 1281 (46.72%) were females. The mean age (±SD) was 39.46 ± 17.63 years. None of the patients in our study had any ocular symptoms or signs as the presenting complaint at the time of their admission. On subsequent follow-up, only 20 (0.72%) developed ocular manifestations, of which 19 (95%) had features suggestive of Bilateral viral conjunctivitis. However, 1 (5%) patient had orbital cellulitis secondary to pansinusitis. Conclusion: Ophthalmic manifestations in the clinical spectrum of COVID-19 infection are uncommon and unlikely to be the presenting clinical impression. However, it has broadened our view to a wider spectrum of COVID-19 presentations enhancing our clinical acumen for staunch detection of COVID-19 suspects in our daily practice, augmenting early diagnosis and management and also break the chain of transmission for the greater good of humanity.

Survey of Retina Specialists' Attitudes and Practice Patterns of Screening and Management of Candida Endophthalmitis

Abstract:Purpose: To understand retina specialists' attitudes and practice patterns for screening for and managing Candida endophthalmitis and any impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on these practice patterns. Methods: A survey was developed on Survey Monkey and distributed to ASRS regular members via email in April 2021. Results: The survey had 231 respondents, of whom 169 (73%) performed inpatient consultations. Ninety percent responded that they do not recommend routinely screening asymptomatic patients with candidemia. For unresponsive patients with candidemia that lack visible signs of endophthalmitis, 65% did not recommend routine screening.However, 85% reported their affiliated hospitals did not have a policy to defer such screening consultations; this proportion did not significantly change when asked if a policy was implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.For patients with a dilated examination without signs of endophthalmitis, 89% surveyed recommended continuing systemic antifungals and reconsult PRN, while the remainder recommended repeat examinations until off antifungals. For initial management of Candida endophthalmitis, 55% indicated systemic antifungals only; 43% indicated systemic antifungals with tap & inject, and 2% indicated systemic antifungals with vitrectomy and intravitreal antifungals. Conclusion: A discordance exists between the prevailing opinion among retina specialists against routine Candida endophthalmitis screening and hospital consultation policies, which were not significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In cases of diagnosed endogenous endophthalmitis, slightly more than half of surveyed retina specialists would not initiate additional treatment beyond systemic antifungals while just under half surveyed recommended initial tap and inject in addition to systemic antifungals.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on the National Health Service in United Kingdom. The UK Ocular Oncology Services evaluated the impact on the adult eye cancer care in the UK. All four adult Ocular Oncology centres participated in a multicentre retrospective review comparing uveal melanoma referral patterns and treatments in a 4-month period during the national lockdown and first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 with corresponding periods in previous 2 years. During the national lockdown, referral numbers and confirmed uveal melanoma cases reduced considerably, equalling to ~120 fewer diagnosed uveal melanoma cases compared to previous 2 years. Contrary to the recent trend, increased caseloads of enucleation and stereotactic radiosurgery (<i>p</i> > 0.05), in comparison to fewer proton beam therapy (<i>p</i> < 0.05), were performed. In the 4-month period following lockdown, there was a surge in clinical activities with more advanced diseases (<i>p</i> < 0.05) presenting to the services. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to mount pressure and reveal its hidden impact on the eye cancer care, it is imperative for the Ocular Oncology Services to plan recovery strategies and innovative ways of working.

Epidemiological features of ophthalmic emergencies during the COVID-19 lockdown: Impact of the health crisis in a tertiary care center

Abstract:Purpose: The goal of this study is to examine changing patterns of ophthalmic visits in an emergency eye care unit of a tertiary referral center in Paris, France, during the Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic compared to a control period. Materials and methods: This was a single-center, retrospective, observational, epidemiological study. We included all visits in the emergency eye care unit of the Quinze-Vingts National Ophthalmology Center, Paris, France, from March 17, 2020 to April 30, 2020, and a corresponding time period in 2016. We analyzed patients' demographic factors, chief complaints, referral patterns, examination findings, treatment provided, hospitalizations and surgical interventions. Results: During the 6weeks of lockdown, 3547 emergency visits were recorded. The control group contained 2108 patients from June 6-19, 2016. There was a decrease of approximately 50% in the number of average daily visitations. The frequency of serious diagnoses (including severe eye inflammation, serious infections, retinal vascular pathologies, surgical emergencies, and neuro-ophthalmology), increased overall during the period (P=0.03). The proportion of low severity pathologies decreased (P<0.001) between the two periods. In addition, an increased amount of ancillary testing was performed (P<0.001). Finally, the rate of hospitalizations was significantly lower during the lockdown period (P<0.001). Conclusion: A significant reduction in total ophthalmic presentations in the emergency eye care unit was observed during the lockdown period. However, the proportion of emergencies requiring specialized treatments (surgical, infectious, inflammatory and neuro-ophthalmological pathologies) increased.

Abstract:Purpose: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, private practice, inpatient consult services, and academic residency programs in ophthalmology saw a decrease in patient encounters. This study elucidates how community hospital ophthalmology consult (OC) services were affected during the pandemic. We aim to determine whether there was a change in resident OC volume in a community-based ophthalmology program consult service during the COVID-19 pandemic. Secondary objectives included analyzing the change in the types of diagnoses and the number of patients seen for diabetic retinopathy over the same time. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted reviewing the electronic health record (EHR) charts from OCs for the period 2017-2021. Records were categorized by referral source and the nature of OCs (trauma, acute, or chronic); OCs were further grouped by year and weak of referral. An intermonth analysis of weekly OC counts in each category was performed for the average number of consults in February-April 2017-2019 and for February-April 2020. A one-tailed t-test was performed. All t-tests assumed equal variances. Results: Weekly OCs in 2020 revealed no statistically significant differences in overall cases or in acute or chronic cases when the volume before the COVID-19 pandemic was compared to the volume after the onset of the pandemic. However, a statistically significant increase in the average weekly trauma cases was noted when 2020 (an average of 2.7 cases per week) was compared to the weekly average for the same weeks of years 2017- 2019 (0.4; P = 0.016). This statistically significant increase in trauma in 2020 disappeared when comparing weeks 11-17 in 2020 (2.2 cases per week) and the average of 2017-2019 (1.1). Conclusion: This report outlines no significant change in OCs before and after the onset of the pandemic compared to three previous years. There was, however, an increase in trauma consults during the pandemic and an increase in the number (though not the proportion) of diabetic retinopathy (DR+) patients seen by residents. This report uniquely describes no significant changes in the resident volume of patients seen during the COVID-19 global pandemic.
Evaluating Ocular Healthcare Accessibility and the Severity of Emergencies during Times of Crisis

Abstract:Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted healthcare systems worldwide, including the delivery of ophthalmic emergency services. This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the clinical presentation of emergencies and the accessibility of healthcare in ophthalmology. Methods: The study employed a single-center, consecutive case series design with historical controls to examine electronic health records over a 21-day period during the COVID-19 pandemic and a matched period from the preceding year. Records were analyzed for demographic variables, diagnosis, length of stay, travel distance, and referral status. The urgency of cases was evaluated by three independent graders using the BaSe SCOrE (BAsic SEverity Score for Common OculaR Emergencies). Results: A total of 1229 patients were included in the study, with 786 patients in the 2019 cohort and 443 patients in the 2020 cohort. During the pandemic period, there was a significant decrease in the number of patients and the duration of their visits (p < 0.0001, p < 0.0001, respectively). There was an increase in walk-in patients (p = 0.03), who took significantly longer journeys to be treated as compared to referred patients (p < 0.01). At the same time, the severity of emergencies increased (p = 0.02). The 2019 logistic regression model found that age (p = 0.003), referral status (p < 0.001), distance (p = 0.009), and first presentation (p = 0.02) were significant predictors of the severity, while gender was not (p = 0.78). The 2020 model found that only age (p < 0.001) and referral status (p < 0.001) were significant predictors of severity. Conclusions: The observed decline in patient volume, increased severity of emergencies, and shifts in predictive variables within the logistic regression models are indicative of significant barriers to healthcare access. Therefore, enhancing health literacy and ensuring low-threshold access to emergency services are crucial, especially during crises.

Abstract:Background: The article aims to study the demographics and clinical characteristics of ocular trauma patients presenting to the Eye Casualty Clinic between COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 era in Ampang Hospital, Malaysia. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, data of patients presented with ocular trauma injury to the Ampang Hospital during the COVID-19 era from 18 March 2020 to 17 September 2020 were retrieved and compared with the similar period of the previous non-COVID-19 era year. Results: Among the total number of 453 patients, 76.82% (n = 348) were predominantly males. The commonest age group was between 21 years old-40 years old (49.45%, n = 224), and the commonest location of ocular trauma injury occurred at the workplace (38.19%, n = 173); welding was the commonest work-related injury (13.83% in 2019; 12.50% in 2020). Injury-to-treatment time was significantly longer during the COVID-19 era, where patients who sought treatment within a day of injury were 27.27% (n = 69) in 2019 and 18.50% (n = 37) in 2020 (P = 0.030). During the COVID-19 pandemic, patients with vision worse than 6/60 on presentation were higher at 8% compared with 3.56% before the COVID-19 pandemic (OR = 2.35; 95% CI: 1.01, 5.48; P = 0.047). Similarly, patients with a vision worse than 6/60 post-treatment during the COVID-19 period were significantly higher at 7.00% compared with 1.58% before the COVID-19 pandemic (OR = 4.72; 95% CI: 1.53, 14.62; P = 0.007). Conclusion: The majority of ocular trauma cases in this study population were male adults between 21 years old and 40 years old, and welding was the commonest work-related injury. COVID-19 era has a higher percentage of patients presented with severe visual impairment, longer injury-to-treatment time and poorer post-treatment visual outcomes.

We aimed to evaluate the provision of obstetrics and gynaecology services in the UK during the acute phase of the COVID‐19 pandemic.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Design</h3><p>Interview‐based national survey.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Setting</h3><p>Women's healthcare units in the National Health Service.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Population</h3><p>Junior doctors in obstetrics and gynaecology.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>Participants were interviewed by members of the UK Audit and Research in Obstetrics and Gynaecology trainees' collaborative between 28 March and 7 April 2020. We used a quantitative analysis for closed‐ended questions and a thematic framework analysis for open comments.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>We received responses from 148/155 units (95%), most of the participants were in years 3–7 of training (121/148, 82%). Most completed specific training drills for managing obstetric and gynaecological emergencies in women with COVID‐19 (89/148, 60.1%) and two‐person donning and doffing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (96/148, 64.9%). The majority of surveyed units implemented COVID‐19‐specific protocols (130/148, 87.8%), offered adequate PPE (135/148, 91.2%) and operated dedicated COVID‐19 emergency theatres (105/148, 70.8%). Most units reduced face‐to‐face antenatal clinics (117/148, 79.1%) and suspended elective gynaecology services (131/148, 88.5%). The 2‐week referral pathway for oncological gynaecology was not affected in half of the units (76/148, 51.4%), but half reported a planned reduction in oncology surgery (82/148, 55.4%).</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusion</h3><p>The provision of obstetrics and gynaecology services in the UK during the acute phase of the COVID‐19 pandemic seems to be in line with current guidelines, but strategic planning is needed to restore routine gynaecology services and ensure safe access to maternity care in the long term.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Tweetable abstract</h3><p>Provision of obstetrics and gynaecology services during the acute phase of COVID‐19 is in line with current guidelines, strategic planning is needed to restore routine services and ensure safe access to care in the long term.</p></section>

Ophthalmology-focused publications and findings on COVID-19: A systematic review

Abstract:Purpose: To summarize COVID-19 research endeavors by ophthalmologists/researchers in terms of publication numbers, journals and author countries, and to detail key findings. Methods: The LitCovid database was systematically reviewed for ophthalmology-focused COVID-19 articles. The quality of the evidence was assessed for articles investigating conjunctivitis in COVID-19 patients. Results: There were 21,364 articles in LitCovid on June 12, 2020, of which 215 (1%) were ophthalmology-focused. Of articles on COVID-19 transmission, 3.3% were ophthalmology-focused. Ophthalmology-focused articles were published in 68 journals and originated from 25 countries. The top five countries publishing ophthalmology-focused articles (China, India, United States of America, Italy, and United Kingdom) produced 145/215 (67%) articles. A total of 16 case reports/series from eight countries reported that conjunctivitis can be the initial or the only symptom of COVID-19 infection. Conjunctivitis may occur in the middle phase of COVID-19 illness. A total of 10 hospital-based cross-sectional studies reported that between 0% and 31.6% of COVID-19 patients have conjunctivitis or other ocular conditions, with a pooled prevalence of 5.5% reported in a meta-analysis. Viral RNA was detected in conjunctival swabs of patients with and without ocular manifestations, after resolution of conjunctivitis, after nasopharyngeal swabs turned negative and in retina of deceased COVID-19 patients. Conclusion: Within 3 months of declaring the COVID-19 pandemic, 215 ophthalmology-focused articles were published in PubMed, concentrating on disease manifestations and transmission. The reported presence of conjunctivitis or other ocular conditions in COVID-19 patients is varied. Clinicians should be alert for ocular involvement in COVID-19 infections and possible ocular transmission even in patients without ocular symptoms.

Surgical Care in Specialist Ophthalmology Departments: Structure and Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract:Background: Specialist ophthalmology departments contribute to the surgical care of German patients. Outpatient and inpatient surgeries were restricted during the COVID-19 pandemic and led to a sharp decline in the number of cases in ophthalmological care. The aim of this analysis was to improve the understanding of the logistic structures of medical facilities as well as the effects of the pandemic. Material and method: Based on reported process data, a sample of the specialist ophthalmological departments were examined based on operation and procedure codes (OPS) and data submitted between 01.01.2017 and 31.05.2021 according to the benchmarking programmes of the Professional Association of German Anaesthetists (BDA), the Professional Association of German Surgeons (BDC), and the Association for Operating Theatre Management (VOPM). Results: Eighteen ophthalmology departments from Germany were analysed. After the decline in the number of cases (by temporarily up to 48%) during the first wave of the pandemic, the case numbers of all interventions assessed as nonurgent continued to be reduced. While intravitreal injections hardly decreased during the first wave (- 16%), significant drops in the coverage of cataract surgery (- 79%), vitrectomies (- 35%), glaucoma surgery (- 59%), strabismus surgery (- 95%), and eyelid surgery (- 52%) were found. One exception was intravitreal injection, which stabilised at a lower level early on during the pandemic. Overall, the number of cases during the later phases of the pandemic were significantly reduced below the level of previous years, despite the maintenance of emergency care. The underuse was variable for different interventions. Conclusion: In addition to self-reported figures, the analysed process data demonstrates the effect that various factors had on elective as well as urgent operations within hospital care during the pandemic. Despite partial stabilisation of some services, a relevant supply gap for outpatient and inpatient interventions was identified, with corresponding effects on the eye health of the population, while compensation or performance enhancement have not taken place to date. Facing the growing preload and the demographic development, future structures must therefore allow for an increase in the performance of specialist ophthalmological departments.

Abstract:The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory coronavirus-2, was first reported in December 2019. The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, 2020 and as of April 17, 2020, 210 countries are affected with >2,000,000 infected and 140,000 deaths. The estimated case fatality rate is around 6.7%. We need to step up our infection control measures immediately or else it may be too late to contain or control the spread of COVID-19. In case of local outbreaks, the risk of infection to healthcare workers and patients is high. Ophthalmic practice carries some unique risks and therefore high vigilance and special precautions are needed. We share our protocols and experiences in the prevention of infection in the current COVID-19 outbreak and the previous severe acute respiratory syndrome epidemic in Hong Kong. We also endeavor to answer the key frequently asked questions in areas of the coronaviruses, COVID-19, disease transmission, personal protection, mask selection, and special measures in ophthalmic practices. COVID-19 is highly infectious and could be life-threatening. Using our protocol and measures, we have achieved zero infection in our ophthalmic practices in Hong Kong and China. Preventing spread of COVID-19 is possible and achievable.

Abstract:Background To assess rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) surgery trends and training among young ophthalmologists (YOs, vitreoretinal fellows or attendings/consultants with ≤10 years of independent practice) and the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic. Methods An anonymous online survey was completed by 117 YOs in the Asia‐Pacific regarding their RRD surgery experiences in 2021–2022. Abstract:The novel coronavirus pneumonia COVID-19 is caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which is highly contagious, has a long incubation period, and can be detected in patients' tears and conjunctival secretions. In this study, we describe our experience regarding the necessary protective measures that need to be taken during ophthalmic examination and treatment. The authors reviewed the clinical work arrangements during the epidemic situation at the Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University in China and analyzed the prevention and control measures that were applied during the laser corneal refractive surgery process. The comprehensive protection protocol, which was established throughout the entire process, included both horizontal (medical staff-patient, medical staff-medical staff, and patient-patient) and vertical (preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative transmission assessment) approach and was mainly focused on strengthening the protection against potential aerosol transmission that may occur during intraocular pressure measurements and laser ablation. The described and proposed protocol, along with the further guidelines followed by the medical personnel, proved to be efficacious and contributed significantly to the control of the COVID-19 outbreak and the protection of both the patients and the medical staff.
