Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted tremendous interest because of their rapid improvement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) from the initial PCE of 3.8% for the first prototype to the certified PCE of 25.2% in 2019. However, the inherent chemical instability of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite halides influenced by moisture, heat and ultraviolet light is still a critical issue for them to meet application-specific requirements owing to the weak-bonded organic components in the hybrid crystal structure. The use of all-inorganic perovskites CsPbI3-xBrx (x = 0, 1, 2, and 3) as light-harvesters by completely substituting organic species with inorganic Cs+ ions has been recently regarded as a promising solar conversion technology. Since the initial efficiency of 2.9% achieved in 2015, the highest PCE record for inorganic PSCs has risen to 18.4% through structure optimization, compositional engineering, interfacial engineering, solvent control and surface passivation, etc. This article is dedicated to providing an up-to-date review on the development of inorganic PSCs tailored by various inorganic perovskite materials with gradually changed optical properties and stability, as well as the film-making methods and interfacial engineering technologies. Their limited efficiencies in theory and recombination mechanisms are also predicted with a detailed balance model. Finally, we focused on the state-of-the-art strategies for enhancing the photovoltaic performance and identified new challenges and outlooks for future studies in this field.
Black Phosphorus Quantum Dots Induced High‐Quality Perovskite Film for Efficient and Thermally Stable Planar Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Crystallinity and trap‐state density of a perovskite film play a critical role in the performance of corresponding perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). Herein, liquid‐phase‐exfoliated black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) are incorporated into the perovskite precursor solution as additives to direct the formation of the perovskite film, i.e., methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3). It is found that the perovskite films made with BPQDs have higher crystallinity and less nonradiative detects compared with the pristine ones, leading to longer carrier lifetime and higher carrier collection efficiency. Time‐of‐flight secondary‐ion mass spectra and surface density calculation of BPQDs reveal that the improvement of the perovskite film quality may be related to the heterogeneous nucleation of the perovskite film at the BPQDs. PVSCs using MAPbI3 films made with BPQDs achieve a maximum power conversion efficiency of 20.0% and an encouraging thermal stability of T80 = 100 h at 100 °C. Both values are remarkably higher than the devices with pristine perovskite films. Therefore, this work demonstrates the potential of the 2D materials quantum dots‐assisted growth method for high‐performance PVSCs.

Abstract:Black phosphorus, famous as two-dimensional (2D) materials, shows such excellent properties for optoelectronic devices such as tunable direct band gap, extremely high hole mobility (300-1000 cm2/(V s)), and so forth. In this Letter, facile processed black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) were successfully applied to enhance hole extraction at the anode side of the typical p-i-n planar hybrid perovskite solar cells, which remarkably improved the performance of devices with photon conversion efficiency ramping up from 14.10 to 16.69%. Moreover, more detailed investigations by c-AFM, SKPM, SEM, hole-only devices, and photon physics measurements discover further the hole extraction effect and work mechanism of the BPQDs, such as nucleation assistance for the growth of large grain size perovskite crystals, fast hole extraction, more efficient hole transfer, and suppression of energy-loss recombination at the anode interface. This work definitely paves the way for discovering more and more 2D materials with high electronic properties to be used in photovoltaics and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are important candidates for next-generation thin-film photovoltaic technology due to their superior performance in energy harvesting. At present, their photoelectric conversion efficiencies (PCEs) are comparable to those of silicon-based solar cells. PSCs usually have a multi-layer structure. Therefore, they face the problem that the energy levels between adjacent layers often mismatch each other. Meanwhile, large numbers of defects are often introduced due to the solution preparation procedures. Furthermore, the perovskite is prone to degradation under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. These problems could degrade the efficiency and stability of PSCs. In order to solve these problems, quantum dots (QDs), a kind of low-dimensional semiconductor material, have been recently introduced into PSCs as charge transport materials, interfacial modification materials, dopants and luminescent down-shifting materials. By these strategies, the energy alignment and interfacial conditions are improved, the defects are efficiently passivated, and the instability of perovskite under UV irradiation is suppressed. So the device efficiency and stability are both improved. In this paper, we overview the recent progress of QDs' utilizations in PSCs.

Abstract:Abstract Although organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs) have been investigated for more than two decades, the power conversion efficiencies of OPVs are much lower than those of inorganic or perovskite solar cells. One effective approach to improve the efficiency of OPVs is to introduce additives to enhance light harvesting as well as charge transportation in the devices. Here, black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) are introduced in OPVs as an additive. By adding 0.055 wt % BPQDs relative to the polymer donors in the OPVs, the device efficiencies can be dramatically improved for more than 10 %. The weight percentage is much lower than that of any other additive used in OPVs before, which is mainly due to the two‐dimentional structure as well as the strong broadband light absorption and scattering of the BPQDs. This work paves a way for using two‐dimentional quantum dots in OPVs as a cost‐effective approach to enhance device efficiencies.

Abstract:Owing to their prominent thermal stability, inorganic halide perovskites have been deemed as promising substitutes for organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites; however, their application is hindered by their mediocre efficiency. High exciton binding energies in inorganic perovskites have been considered to be one of the main obstacles, which lead to insufficient separation of bound excitons and low photocurrent output. Herein, we demonstrated an effective strategy to enhance the exciton dissociation efficiency in inorganic perovskites by incorporating layer-structure-tunable two-dimensional black phosphorous. Importantly, the energy-level configuration and work function alignment of multi-layer black phosphorous can be tuned by adjusting the number of layers, which induces built-in electric field formation and boosts interfacial charge carrier transfer. Furthermore, it is revealed that multi-layer black phosphorous can increase relative permittivity due to its efficient dielectric screening effect in a local dielectric environment, thus diminishing the exciton binding energy, enhancing the exciton dissociation efficiency and leading to a significant increase in the free carrier density of inorganic perovskites. The multi-layer black phosphorous-CsPbI3 heterostructure perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with the inorganic CuSCN hole-transport-layer (HTL) exhibit the current density of 19.3 mA cm(-2) and the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.17%, which is one of the highest efficiencies reported to date for PSCs with all-inorganic materials.
Defect Passivation and Electrical Conductivity Enhancement in Perovskite Solar Cells Using Functionalized Graphene Quantum Dots

Abstract:Organic-inorganic halide perovskites have been intensively investigated as potential photovoltaic materials due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties and their successful applications in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, a large number of defect states still exist in the PSCs so far and are detrimental to their power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) and stability. Here, an effective strategy of incorporating single-crystalline graphene quantum dots (GQDs) into the perovskite films is proposed to passivate the defect states. Intriguingly, the GQD-modified perovskite films exhibit purer phase structure, higher quality of morphology, and higher electrical conductivity when compared with the control perovskite films. All of the advantages caused by the incorporation of the GQDs lead to fast carrier separation and transport, long carrier lifetime, and low nonradiative recombination in the PSCs based on the GQD-modified perovskite films. As a result, this kind of PSC displays an increase in all photovoltaic parameters, and its PCE shows an enhancement of more than 20% when compared with the control PSC. Moreover, this novel PSC is demonstrated to have long-term stability and resistibility against heat and moisture. Our findings provide an insight into how to passivate the defect states and enhance the electrical conductivities in the perovskites and pave the way for their further exploration to achieve higher photovoltaic performances.

Abstract:In this article we doped Black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQD) in the light absorption layer of the hybrid perovskite solar cells (HPSCs), which enhanced the photon conversion efficiency (PCE) of the solar cell from about 11.8% to 12.4% and open voltage from 0.9V to 0.95V. After we do more detailed investigations by SEM and Photoluminescence (PL), we find that this enhancement is caused by BPQD introducing the growth of larger size grain of perovskite crystals and broaden band gap of Perovskite with BPQD and better carrier transport property of perovskite with BPQDs.
In Situ Formation of Iodide Precursor for Perovskite Quantum Dots with Application in Efficient Solar Cells

Abstract:Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) become a kind of competitive material for fabricating high-performance solar cells due to their solution processability and outstanding optoelectronic properties. However, the current synthesis method of PQDs is mostly based on the binary-precursor method, which results in a large deviation of the I/Pb input ratio in the reaction system from the stoichiometric ratio of PQDs. Herein, a ternary-precursor method with an iodide source self-filling ability is reported for the synthesis of the CsPbI3 PQDs with high optoelectronic properties. Systematically experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations are conducted to fundamentally understand the effects of the I/Pb input molar ratio on the crystallographic and optoelectronic properties of PQDs. The results reveal that increasing the I/Pb input molar ratio can obtain ideal cubic structure PQDs with iodine-rich surfaces, which can significantly reduce the surface defects of PQDs and realize high orientation of PQD solids, facilitating charge carrier transport in the PQD solids with diminished nonradiative recombination. Consequently, the PQD solar cells exhibit an impressive efficiency of 15.16%, which is largely improved compared with that of 12.83% for the control solar cell. This work provides a feasible strategy for synthesizing high-quality PQDs for high-performance optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:As the third generation of new thin-film solar cells, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted much attention for their excellent photovoltaic performance. Today, PSCs have reported the highest photovoltaic conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.5%, which is an encouraging value, very close to the highest PCE of the most widely used silicon-based solar cells. However, scholars have found that PSCs have problems of being easily decomposed under ultraviolet (UV) light, poor stability, energy level mismatch and severe hysteresis, which greatly limit their industrialization. As unique materials, quantum dots (QDs) have many excellent properties and have been widely used in PSCs to address the issues mentioned above. In this article, we describe the application of various QDs as additives in different layers of PSCs, as luminescent down-shifting materials, and directly as electron transport layers (ETL), light-absorbing layers and hole transport layers (HTL). The addition of QDs optimizes the energy level arrangement within the device, expands the range of light utilization, passivates defects on the surface of the perovskite film and promotes electron and hole transport, resulting in significant improvements in both PCE and stability. We summarize in detail the role of QDs in PSCs, analyze the perspective and associated issues of QDs in PSCs, and finally offer our insights into the future direction of development.

Abstract:CsPbIxBry-based all-inorganic perovskite materials are a potential candidate for stable semitransparent and tandem structured photovoltaic devices. However, poor film (morphological and crystalline) quality and interfacial recombination lead consequently to a decline in the photoelectric conversion performance of the applied solar cells. In this work, we incorporated PbS quantum dots (QDs) at the interface of electron transporting layer (ETL) SnO2 and perovskite to modulate the crystallization of CsPbIBr2 and the interfacial charge dynamics in carbon-based solar cells. The as-casted PbS QDs behave as seeds for lattice-matching the epitaxial growth of pinhole-free CsPbIBr2 films. The modified films with reduced defect density exhibit facilitated carrier transfer and suppressed charge recombination at the ETL/perovskite interface, contributing to an enhanced device efficiency from 7.00 to 9.09% and increased reproducibility and ambient stability. This strategic method of QD-assisted lattice-matched epitaxial growth is promising to prepare high-quality perovskite films for efficient perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:An effective combination of smart materials plays an important role in charge transfer and separation for high photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) and stable solar cells. Black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) have been revealed as a direct band gap semiconductor with ultrahigh conductivity, which have been explored in the present work as an additive component to a precursor solution of SnO2 nanoparticles that can effectively improve the performance of SnO2 electron transport layer (ETL)-based perovskite solar cells. Such a device can yield a high PCE of 21% with the SnO2/BPQDs mixed ETL, which is higher than those of perovskite solar cells based on SnO2 single layer (18.2%), BPQDs/SnO2 bilayer (19.5%), and SnO2/BPQDs bilayer (20.5%) samples. The mixed samples still possess good stability of more than 90% efficiency after 1000 h under AM 1.5G lamp irradiation and negligible hysteresis. It is found that the strong interaction of BPQDs with SnO2 can not only modify the defects inherent to the SnO2 layer but also inhibit the oxidation of BPQDs. This work provides a promising functional material for SnO2 ETL-based perovskite solar cells and proves that the BPQD-based modification strategy is useful for designing other solar cells with high performance.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite solar cells have attracted great interest due to their high efficiency and simple fabrication process. However, the high efficiency heavily relies on expensive organic hole-transporting materials (OHTMs) such as 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-MeOTAD), it is preferable to replace these expensive OHTMs by inorganic and low cost materials. Here, we report colloidal PbS quantum dots synthesized by a facile method and used as the inorganic hole-transporting material in a hybrid perovskite solar cell. By controlling the crystalline morphology of the perovskite capping layer, the recombination process is significantly retarded. Furthermore, a pure inorganic solar cell prepared by a two-step process demonstrated a nearly 8% power conversion efficiency due to efficient charge separation by a cascade of junctions and retarding charge recombination by a void-free capping layer. The stability of the inorganic solar cell was also tested with a little decay observed within ca. 100 h.

Abstract:Black phosphorous quantum dots (BPQDs) possess ambipolar charge transport, high mobility, and a tunable direct bandgap. Here, liquid-exfoliated BPQDs are used as interlayers to modify both the electron transport layer and hole transport layer in organic solar cells (OSCs). The incorporation of BPQDs is beneficial to the formation of a cascade band structure and electron/hole transfer and extraction. The power conversion efficiency of the BPQDs-incorporated OSC based on PTB7-Th:FOIC blend is enhanced from 11.8% to 13.1%. In addition, power conversion efficiency enhancement is also achieved for other nonfullerene and fullerene-based devices, demonstrating the universality of this interlayer methodology.
Perovskite bridging PbS quantum dot/polymer interface enables efficient solar cells

Abstract:Conjugated polymers have been explored as promising hole-transporting layer (HTL) in lead sulfide (PbS) quantum dot (QD) solar cells. The fine regulation of the inorganic/organic interface is pivotal to realize high device performance. In this work, we propose using CsPbI3 QDs as the interfacial layer between PbS QD active layer and organic polymer HTL. The relative soft perovskite can mediate the interface and form favorable energy level alignment, improving charge extraction and reducing interfacial charge recombination. As a result, the photovoltaic performance can be efficiently improved from 10.50% to 12.32%. This work may provide new guidelines to the device structural design of QD optoelectronics by integrating different solution-processed semiconductors.

However, PSCs suffer from energy level mismatch, a large number of defects in perovskite films, and easy decomposition under ultraviolet (UV) light, which greatly limit the industrial application of PSCs. Currently, quantum dot (QD) materials are widely used in PSCs due to their properties, such as quantum size effect and multi-exciton effect. In this review, we detail the application of QDs as an interfacial layer to PSCs to optimize the energy level alignment between two adjacent layers, facilitate charge and hole transport, and also effectively assist in the crystallization of perovskite films and passivate defects on the film surface.

Abstract:Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have captured a host of researchers' attention due to their unique properties, which have been introduced to lots of optoelectronics areas, such as light-emitting diodes, lasers, photodetectors, and solar cells. Herein, the authors aim at reviewing the achievements of PQDs applied to solar cells in recent years. The engineering concerning surface ligands, additives, and hybrid composition for PQDSCs is outlined first, followed by analyzing the reasons of undesired performance of PQDSCs. Subsequently, a novel overview that PQDs are utilized to improve the photovoltaic performance of various kinds of solar cells, is provided. Finally, this review is summarized and some challenges and perspectives concerning PQDs are also discussed.
