Balancing Yin & Yang:Chinese Values Orientations and Their Structures

Abstract:China,a country with long-standing culture, has been experiencing major social changes since the 1980s. Knowing the values orientation of its people is of critical importance. In order to explore the specific traits of Chinese values systems, two studies were conducted following the indigenous approach. At first,the original value items, collected by open questionnaire, sorted into general items by multiple individuals. After the pretest, the preliminary Chinese Value Instrument (CVI) was constructed, which has 79 items. We collected data from 2089 people,and results revealed 11 dimensions of Chinese people: Morale standards, Social harmony, Achievement & power, Mental development, Deploitation & risk, Stability, Familism, Happiness, Renqing & guanxi, Self-direction, Zhongyong, which could be further classified into two categories: "Yin (阴)" and "Yang (阳)". This research also found that the guiding values of Chinese people are Familism, Morale standards,Mental development,and that the differences in values between male and female are not significant.
